bees. when I was a kid, someone told me to not move around bees so that they wouldn't bother you. outside during recess, I froze still cause a couple of bees landed on my shoulders/neck. the bell rang for us to go inside and I had to make a mad dash for the doors despite the fear I'd get stung. hindsight and common sense now tell me bees are generally harmless and wasps are the enemy, but I'm traumatized now and treat them the same

honestly I watch so many movies with my friends nowadays and a lot of them are really bad lmao. I think a recent movie we watched was The Killer and I didn't like it, but it's rated highly for who-knows-why. like it's not even a comedic mess-up, the assassin was just bad at his job and it's not entertaining

three things you love about yourself:

I'm a relatively positive person, or more like I don't have that much hate in my soul. will try to be the best supportive friend you've ever had. and I've got a lot of creative outlets to use!

a place you hope to visit in the future and why:

Japan! I wanna see so many gamer things there. plus the tourist-y landmarks/activities. life-sized gundam is also on the list, if that's still around. and the food! (that I've been seeing because I follow this one guy on YouTube)

the first name that came to mind was Dwayne Johnson for whatever reason, but he's doesn't actually get on my nerves that much

things you're excited about in the near future:

(slowly and surely) getting back to writing!! reviewing some of these games that I've been playing recently, because I've got Opinions on some of them. and getting used to this fancy new limited edition 8BitDo controller that I got. if this was a week ago, I could've said watching my friend finish the main story of Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, but that's already happened

as a gamer and basketball fan, those are wildly toxic fanbases. gamers are so mean to the devs (sometimes rightfully so, other times not so much) and to other players. like literal death threats sometimes, it's insane. and then fans of basketball would literally boo their own players at times, like what.

list three things you find beautiful about life:

Space science (thanks Kurzgesagt)! Other people's works (art, writing, games, or otherwise)! Family, friends, and pets!

any dreams for the future:

finishing and publishing any of my works so that people can (hopefully) enjoy the experience I made for them

how are you feeling today?

another day of writing, gaming, etc. but it's grey and gloomy outside and it's sucking like half of my energy away, especially because I need to walk the dog later. and the NBA Trade Deadline is at 3pm so I might be spending more time than usual paying attention to player movement/trades between teams, especially because my team is Not Good and I'm expecting them to make moves this deadline.

Happy late thanksgiving if you celebrate it. So I lied about foolish being the next story, but I do promise a foolish gamers one will be out I just don't know when. This is last week story so another one is coming this week. Anyway I was feeling for a heartbreak type a feeling this week. So I came up with this. The song is called •Slowly by Olivia Dean• (the song was a hard choice for me to pick sorry). This story is less than 900 words. So until next week bye!!

The first time Karl asked me out was the most important day of my life. Karl was mine and I was his. We would stay up, I would watch his stream, hear his first song come out, and saw the evolution of him from being a small creator to what his is today. But recently I felt like that spark we had has dimmed and is going out each day. Now that he is going to places for his platforms and meeting fans. He loved it and after those days he would call me to tell me about it. I would smile about every little things. Slowly we both didn't act like lovers like we did in the beginning.

Tonight Karl is coming home from Twitchcon and happened to be on date night. So that's how I will break it off. The minutes passed but it only felt like hours to me. The seconds were worse. Slowly the door open as gave me a hug with a smile. For i to just smile kissing his cheek. "You ready to go? I know it's late but maybe we can just walk around the park and act like kids again. Maybe give you lesson on the skateboard again?" All I did was nod. My feeling's shift. If I was sure to break-up with him. Maybe it would be different he would stay home more or I can tagged along. Something in me knew that wasn't going to happen. He is still gonna explore the world and new attractions around the world. While I stayed and waited for him to come home. He called my name snapping me out of a trance. He waited for me by the door, "You ready?"

We parked at a lot where there was a park alongside a skatepark. He held his skateboard while holding my hand. Since the ride I never spoke a word. My guess that karl was gonna question it once we started to walk. For now, I'm gonna make this moment last. So that what I did we played around the park. The laughter could be heard by the cars in the lot. With the smile of ours was enough to fill the warmth around us.

Next was to the skate park. Karl did some of his trick as I took in everything to the leaves that fall to the cement up to the moon marking it is was only 11 pm. Karl kept skating as my face fell to my shoes. I didn't know I was in a trance till I tear appeared from my eye to the cement. Blinking quickly, pulling my phone out of my pocket to notice my eyes red. Karl glanced at me to see my eyes covered. Running over I tried to hide my face but he saw the tears from my cheek. "What's wrong y/n?" No words were to escape my lips just cries when he asked that single question. All he did was hold me telling me it was gonna be okay. But it wasn't. "It's not gonna be okay Karl." I was frustrated but not at him. "Karl nothing gonna be okay. I love you Karl so much-," he interrupted putting his hands on my cheeks wiping of my tears. "I love you y/n," I just shake my head standing up. "Karl we aren't a couple.," that's what caught his attention, "We don't act like a couple. We don't show it to each other even to our friends. Karl we act like friends. Best friends at most." My eyes looked at Karl's taking his hand off my cheeks to stroke his. Facing down, "As much as it hurts me to say, we don't love each other like how we did in the beginning" I held his hand waiting for a response from him but he never spoke. All he did was holding my hand. I knew deep down he didn't want this to be his reality. He thought it was a joke and the cameras will come out. And I will say , you just got pranked baby! As the seconds turned to minutes, he knew that it wasn't a joke and it was his reality. "How long have you noticed it?" Was his first question. Taking in a breathe, "2 months ago. I didn't realize it till how we acted towards each other and when you left for a trips. I was so used to it. But I didn't wanna believe it till others started to point it out."  My voice cracked as he said on the board of his. Slowly it dimmed on Karl that what I was saying is true. That it came to a habit. He didn't want to admit it. He loves me. I love him. But the spark isn't as bright as where we both started it as the beginning.

The lovers that went into that park walked out as a two broken hearts.

i think my first exposure to AI art might've been this video where somebody was testing out this new, weird thing where they automatically generate a song using AI, and i couldnt help but feel that it was an indictment of the modern music scene that a goddamn computer could effortlessly and accurately replicate the generic swill that passes for popular music nowadays. didnt have a vocalist synthesized yet but those have been becoming a thing too, or so i hear.

i saw a little article about how the newer generations of gamers are turning more and more to retro games. as somebody technically belonging to the "newer generations" this felt self evident, as frankly most of the gaming i do nowadays is almost invariably in an emulator. i think that to a certain extent, most of the best mainstream games that are going to be made already have been, at least for the forseeable future of major developers with games made scientifically perfect for milking you for the most money possible rather than as an art form. im sure it's all gonna collapse in on itself eventually, from what i hear some of the older folks who lived through more than i have we've been here before. hell, pretty much anybody who cares even a bit about gaming history knows first and foremost about the gaming crash of the early 80s, mostly spurred on by the temporal equivalent of modern cheap asset flip garbage that floods most stores these days. it's hard not to feel like we're about to see a massive crash yet again, with the ones inheriting the earth being the little fellas, and of course nintendo. which, makes sense, their earliest history is of weathering shit just like this, of course they'd know when to spot enshittification and stay clear of it. i'm in no way saying that nintendo is exempt of being a shitty corporation, but i will say that from a business standpoint they're one of the only ones i know of that actually seem to understand the idea of sustainability on a broad scale. hell of a lot better than the likes of activision, thats for damn sure. but back to what i was actually trying to get at before i adhd tangent'd, i think it makes a lot of sense that when the majority of the shit being put on the market is corporatist, design by comittee, prefab trash with aggressive monetization and a consistent attitude of fixing any problems in patches, it makes a hell of a lot of sense that we'd go back to our roots. NES mario is the same as its ever been, has been for over 30 years, and will be in another 30. you dont gotta worry about them patching it to make it actually function as advertised, or patching it from being something you enjoyed into something you hate, or having fomo marketing based microtransaction bullshit. the most that's gonna change is that every now and again, nintendo will make the only version they give not have flashing lights for epileptic folks, or patch out mike tyson because he sucks and replace him with a white guy, and the white guy's less hard but thats ok because it's still pretty hard, and either way it's a good game, fun, and you can still find the original on rom sites and also probably ebay if you dont have a vpn but do have a disposable income, so dont worry about it. getting sidetracked again, ANYWAYS-

what i wanted to get at is that i wonder if we're gonna see a similar resurgence in other old kinds of media just like, in general, for the mainstream. like why watch the 22nd reboot of ghost busters when the originals are right there. king crimson's still good, why dont you listen to them instead of bemoaning how your new favs are problematic, even though i dont think fripp can reclaim the fag slur (im gay, i can it's fine). i've recently been watching fist of the north star and original dragon ball, ilike the m. there are books. lots of those, actually,. you can read em! if you have the attention span. i honestly think we might be seeing more and more of this, now that im looking out for it. like i see just like, random people mention how much they like prog rock or 1930s dracula. relatively normals talk about how they like lemon demon these days. those stupid aestheticized classic anime accounts on twitter get sososo many likes. can you tell im sleep deprived writing this? i can, and im writing thjis. im writing this SO HARD. send poast.

I'm playing Final Fantasy 7, a videogame I already played years and years ago when I was youthful, except they remade it to so now all the characters look like horny Epcot instead of being made out of legos. (I felt an immense nostalgia for the legos a while back when I saw the toy versions of them, but). I didn't plan to play it but then the reviews of the second installment were curious enough that...

It's a curious experience because I liked FF7 at the time, but I don't feel strongly about it and I only strongly remember a couple bits. Or I feel like the fortunes of Japanese games really crashed after that and only recently have risen back up with things like Elden Ring or those last couple Zeldas or Yakuza catching on locally or whatever else. When I played FF7, Japan had all the "cool games" and I kind of think we're back there now, now that the Americans are making, you know, some real garbage. Like, we ran a whole lap!

Japanese games really like to have lonely gamers get to imagine what it's like to have friends...? FF7 or the Persona games, that's sort of the whole thing. (Yakuza 0 is a tragedy for grown ups though because it posits, "What if you had to beat up your friends by hitting square button over and over, and occasionally hitting pause so you can eat convenience store sushi to refill your health bar?" A hard question). So I'm playing and it's like... "Oh yeah, that's my buddy Tifa. I wonder how she's been." (She's been cold; she refuses to wear pants, even though she lives underneath a metal plate or something). I saw someone at a funeral the other day I hadn't seen for 20 years, and it was like "Oh. Time" not in the same way, but not in an entirely dissimilar way. It's weird to experience the passage of time as a consequence of swinging Cloud Strife's dumb sword at sewer rats.

I just go to the part where your character dresses up like a woman to seduce a Sex Man, which I have to say... I remember playing very differently when Sex Man was made out of legos and he was horny for other legos. The new version was in high definition-- just a different deal! I had a dumb-old-man thought of like, "Can you make new games that are like this" but then I remembered one of the last games I played was Baldur's Gate 3 and my character had mostly-consensual intercourse with some kind of sexually aggressive bipedal tadpole in that game inbetween her trying to convert you to tadpole Mormonism or whatever. Or Alan Wake 2 was about Finland. So the answer is yes, and ... like, games are just weird. They're just all weird and shit. Consult a 4 hour Tim Rogers video to learn more.

The weirdest thing is just they play the Final Fantasy 7 music in the Final Fantasy 7 videogame, which I should have seen coming probably, if I were "on top of my shit" but ... I haven't sat around listening to the Final Fantasy 7 music since I played Final Fantasy 7, and that music is so ... immediately a channel back to that experience. You've probably heard, you know, the Jurassic Park theme song since you saw Jurassic Park, but imagine if you hadn't heard it since you were a little kid and then it just started playing for hours at a time while your Epcot self put on a dress to infiltrate a gangbang... It would feel a way, is my point! I don't know what you'd call that feeling, but it feels like something, I suppose.

TLDR I googled whether anyone recut the scenes of Cloud Strife putting on a dress and makeup to James's Laid, and I couldn't find that anyone had done it yet, somehow. That's how I know the kids aren't okay.

This time we’ll be looking at a subtitled VHS version of The Wizard, which was known as Sweet Road in Japan.

While the movie is often considered a 100-minute Nintendo commercial among gamers like us, it feels a little different when looking at it from the outside in. It’s touted more as a fun road adventure/coming-of-age movie in Japanese, hence the “Sweet Road” title. Even if you can’t read any of the Japanese text, you can see this change in focus from the art on the back of the box. It’s described as a “lighthearted and touching American road movie” and the tagline at the top says:

Heroes don’t cry. We headed to California in pursuit of the rest of our dream.

The presentation and title give it a strong “we’re going for a Stand by Me” vibe, which we’ve previously seen is a big deal in Japan.

The movie title changed for its Japanese release, but the new title appears before the actual movie begins. Then, when the original title pops up in English, nothing is displayed in its place. It’s probably assumed that the audience understands that the title was changed for Japanese audiences. The back of the Japanese box randomly includes the original “The Wizard” logo too, so that connection probably helps explain the situation too.

On a different note, an 80s song plays during this intro scene. It’s left untranslated and unsubtitled though. It’s pretty normal to see songs untranslated in English-to-Japanese movie translations unless the lyrics hold some meaningful connection to the story or to what’s happening on screen at the same time. Basically, if a song is used as a decoration for setting the mood, it’s pretty normal to see it untranslated.

Also, from personal experience, Japanese companies are weird about lyrics and their songs having separate licenses, which means that even if you have permission to use a song in a video, you don’t necessarily have permission to translate the song. Those rights have to be negotiated separately. This is why anime songs don’t always get translated right away. I don’t think that’s what’s going on here, though – I feel like it’s just the standard “it’s only audio decoration” approach. __________________

I gotta get up for a few, I will be reading this though it looks like a wildly fascinating look into how American culture gets translated elsewhere, since it's just such a basic film plot anyhow.

Kinda interested in seeing more of how Himiko is in this game, she was talking way more like an entertainer than somebody convinced they are a mage here. Like a professional trying to be inspiring?

Eurovision Rehearsal quick takes

I’m not linking the tiktoks because I openly resent the fact that Eurovision wants me to use tiktok, but clearly I don’t care THAT much, or I wouldn’t watch them. I’m not gonna be one of those people pretending seeing Eurovision rehearsals or whatever is a right, and I HAVE to use tiktok by force. lol. I’m more self-aware than that, thanks.

ANYWAY, here’s my off the cuff takes on each of the performers who went today. YOutube clips should be up May 3rd, and also be BETTER, so any in-depth thoughts I share will be then.

These are in running order:

Norway: Can she hit anything BUT the whistle note? It is all over the place here, and considering MGP is out of its fucking mind and lets competitors use autotune--though Alessandra claims she didn’t--I wonder if we’re gonna see shaky vocals on the night. it’ll qualify anyway, the tiktoks girlies are all over this one, and televoters don’t always punish bad vocals. (YOU SHOULD START.)

Malta: Love the sparkle sweater and the use of the LED screens. Also, he can actually sing the song he represented he could sing. Very dynamic, i’m not sure I think it can save them, but it maybe DESERVES to?

Serbia: I cannot wait to see what the fuck the casual viewers make of this. Bringing the NF staging, strange discordant gamer chaos that I am strangely unopposed to? I think?

Latvia: It was nice knowing you. They can sing it, but they brought a staging that is not going to stand out in this semi and it’s just too tough.

Portugal: GIRL NO. When you said you were bringing “A luxurious and glamorous cabaret:” I assumed like, a prop. Maybe some glitter. Just a thought. Even the couch is gone.It’s 5 of you on a bare stage with lights in the back. I have so many concerns now.  She can still KILL the vocals, but the staging is not it, friends. Best dress she’s had so far though.

Ireland: OBSESSED with how much I hate this guy’s jumpsuit. There’s stairs! BOY PORTUGAL WOULDN’T STAIRS BE NICE? There’s pyrotechnics! The staging actually looks good, and he can sing while moving about the stage, I bet the odds board is ALL OVER THE PLACE rn.

Croatia: This is going to be so much fucking fun to see live, and unless they REALLY fuck it up I am going to pay human American dollars to vote for it because this MUST be in the final.

Switzerland: I am so disappointed at how they burned this kid with this song. He can SING. He can sing WELL. He can RUN ACROSS THE STAGE WHILE HITTING A STRONG NOTE, meanwhile käärijä and mae are out of breath singing and walking across stage, my god. I do not think any of that can save this, and I don’t even WANT it to be saved, I fucking hate the song and think it is in EXTREMELY poor taste for Switzerland, but GOD, Remo deserved better.

Moldova: Oh Moldova is QUALIFYING. That was great, he can move and sing with ease, his flutist is incredible, my only negative is a miss the deer antlers and don’t care for the new headgear on the gals. But I am feeling SO much more confident about a Moldova Q, we love it.

Sweden: Finally got to see the solution to the panini press problem! It looks a little rinky dink in a wide shot, but I think with the close in camera it’ll look very similar to Melfest at home. It sounded a bit like she was rushing the vocals! I’m so used to Loreen sounding perfect all the time that it was pretty jarring, and the odds changes reflect that, but when one takes the average of her performances, i’m not actually concerned.
