WHY SELYSE FLORENT SHOULD BE QUEEN OF WESTEROS WITH TEXTUAL PROOF

It is once again time to recline and ponder the many gifts of Queen Selyse Florent. Over the course of five books, what other character has had such an illustrious career so full of achievement or lived a life so dazzling and rewarding? As the fiscal year draws to a close we can see that so much of Westeros owes thanks to Selyse and House Florent for keeping it real and being classy and lots of other stuff. You may think the Tyrells are smart and competent but that’s just fraudulent fraud from Highgarden.

I want to post of a few key passages that best demonstrate why Selyse Florent, mother of foxes, is so well-suited to the title of Queen.

”Yes,” Lady Selyse agreed. “Patches’s helm. It suits you well, old man. Put it on again, I command you.” And I will serve you to the last, my sweet queen, Cressen thought, for suddenly he saw the way. “Thank you, Your Grace,” he intoned, bowing low. “I never realized until now how much I needed your discerning and fashionable eye. This helm enhances my style very much and I never would have had the confidence to express myself without you.”

”Joffrey shall die,” Queen Selyse declared, serene in her confidence. Davis saw that her confidence was well-earned, with her regal poise and her flawless hair. He suddenly felt ashamed for being such a hater and decided that from now on, he would obey her without question.

Queen Selyse pursed her lips. “Lord Snow, as Lady Val is a stranger to our ways, please send her to me, that I might instruct her in the duties of a noble lady toward her lord husband.” That will go splendidly, I know. Jon knew that Val looked up to Queen Selyse and was always hoping to have her be a mentor figure. “As you wish,” he said, “though if I might speak freely—” “No, I think not. Now you may sashay away.” Jon Snow bent his knee, bowed his head, withdrew. He knew that Selyse shouldn’t be disturbed because she was about to go give away free cars to a bunch of her fans.

Queen Aemma Targaryen of the Seven Kingdoms and her ladies-in-waiting (Laeta Velaryon, Ronnalyn Arryn, Malia Hightower, Amara Martell)

Inspired by @15-lizards ‘s post about Aemma’s fashion influences during her time as queen. All of them wear some variations of a Burgundian gown and hennins, influenced by Aemma’s childhood in the Vale. They have their own personal spin on their outfits, also influenced by their own house histories. For example, Aemma has a triple horned hennin and a v-shaped hennin for the Targaryen dragons. Ronnalyn has a crescent shaped hennin for the moon door. Malia’s hennin is tall and the fabric on her dress resembles bricks because she’s a “high tower.” It’s not subtle but it’s not meant to be. Laeta has more fabric and accessories because she’s richer than the other ladies but it’s not garishly so because she’s not trying to outshine the queen.

Do you think we will ever meet any nice Florents (sans Melessa), whether that be in the main series or even Dunk and Egg?

Friend, I understand how you feel having GRRM crap all over your favorite minor house by apparently making all the members 1D assholes. The women of House Florent have spawned some good kids: Shireen Baratheon, Samwell Tarly (and his siblings probably), and Edric Storm. We haven’t heard anything bad about Colin and Delena, or Alekyne and Rhea in Oldtown (who we may see in Sam’s POV as they’re trying to defend the city from the ironborn). Nor those Florents at the Ashford Tourney (since Dunk served under a blind Lord Florent, it’s possible we’ll meet him again and he’ll be decent). So I wouldn’t lose hope that we’d never meet any decent Florents.

28mm A Song of Ice and Fire: Selyse Florent

Another quick update this time, with another character figure, this time one representing Queen Selyse Florent, Stannis Baratheon's wife. She's definitely more of a non-combatant character in this project, but with around sixty-odd knights and men-at-arms at Castle Black, she does have enough of a military presence there to at least give the Night's Watch some second thoughts about offending her

In the books Selyse is pretty unusual in that her outfits are very rarely described, and never in much detail, probably because the only POVs who see her are Jon and Davos, who don't tend to pay much attention to that (compared to say, Ned who is very fashion conscious!). So in the absence of more detailed descriptions, I've combined colour schemes from her own house with those of her husband's, so she has a dress with the Florent white, blue and red, and over that, the Baratheon yellow and black, with ermine cuffs for the cold! Selyse struck me as someone who would be very performatively courtly, to compensate for Stannis' total aversion to the pageantry of nobility, so I thought bright colours and fancy dresses would suit her better than the extremely muted outfits of the TV series, at least in my interpretation!

In my heads, the Florents (like the Tyrells and some other Reach-based houses) have fairly light brown hair, as a direct contrast to Stannis’ very dark Baratheon hair, so I went with that look, I’ll try and keep that consistent if I get round to some more Florents!  The figure is one of the Assault Group Tudor Crowd figures without any modifications, I thought about adding her crown of flames, but ultimately decided against it, though I might do a second figure with the crown to pair with Stannis himself eventually!

Selyse is one of those characters I’m never quite sure how to think about. Like, she’s awful, an aggressive, fanatical aristocrat who has zero patience for the little people, but at the same time, there’s a shred of sympathy there, with years of spousal neglect and trying to conform to strict societal gender roles on a miserable island leading her to try and find some kind of sense of belonging and meaning in R’hllor

Hopefully she’s turned out ok!

Though many moons passed before the Dragon King made it to Highgarden, it felt like no time at all and yet all the time in the world to Percy. He was still in shock, still healing, itching to pick up a sword again to find an outlet for his frustration, his grief. The image of Edmund swallowed by flames kept him up at night, but no more did he want to pick it up again than when the Tyrells were given the seat. Stewards to the Gardeners before the Field of Fire, they had no claim to the post other than keeping it warm while their masters were away. It was like conquering a keep and giving it to the first stableboy you saw - it was insulting. His Lord Father and Lady Mother were horrified and offended, but they were perhaps more politically aligned, discussing whether they should attempt to play both sides and curry favor - the Field made them cautious to speak too brazenly about their distaste - but Perceon refused to hear it, to even consider one of them bowing before the Tyrells, or even to speak of marrying with them in the future. Beyond blind loyalty to their Kings, Edmund was his friend. And this would not stand.

I have a few ideas for a fanfic story I'd like to try writing for ASOIAF (would be my first ever fanfic except for a terrible Animorphs fic I wrote when I was eight).

Aegon's Conquest fic about House Florent reacting to House Tyrell's elevated status as Lord Paramounts of the Mander. (I know my fox faves were FUMING.)

Something speculative about Valaena Velaryon, pre-Conquest.

None of these will be well-written quality fics! But that won't stop me!! Any suggestions or preferences of which you'd like to read?
