Baseball has been our national past time for the past 120 years. Some folks believe that time has passed. I disagree for many reasons. Major league baseball plays more games in more cities than any other professional sport in America. Want to know if you live in a major American city? Ask one question. Does your city have a major league franchise? I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. We've got the NBA. We've got the NFL. We've got the NHL. We don't have major league baseball although we do have a minor league team. Our city is growing and if baseball expands, we've got a good chance to become a major city.

One of the reasons we love baseball is because the diamond produces a truth every night. Which team is better. Every team is filled with astonishing talent. Every player looks great in a uniform. They've all dominated throughout their careers, always looking for maximimum competition which they finally confront when they reach the majors.

Which team is the better team on any given night. We want to know the truth. The truth is delivered on the diamond. The truth is conveyed on the scoreboard.

No matter what we believe, we are only as good as our record. The pursuit of truth stretches from April through November and is only determined after the last inning of the last game. Until that time all belief is hope, no matter how good we look in our uniforms.

By the last inning of the last game, every team has experienced some degree of truth. They were good or bad, thrilling or disappointing but in the end they were not good enough. They go into the off season. They wheel and deal in the hotstove league and by the next April, they begin once again to search for the diamond truth.

In that search, they/we must be resilient. We must learn from our losses. We must resist the temptation to sulk or we will slump as a result. We need short memories because the next version of truth is warming up in the bullpen or waiting in the on deck circle. We can never lose our hope.

In teir first season as a major league team, the New York Mets set a record for the most losses by a major league team.In their second season, after the very first pitch a fan held up a banner that said "wait till next year."

I love that.

There's always a next year as long as we're alive, as long as we don't give up hope. We learn this when we embrace the truth of the diamond.
