Emily yawns and wishes she’d taken that second cup of coffee for the road this morning when she’d left the office. As the elevator dings, she steps out onto the carpeted hallway. If he slept through his alarm while the rest of us are out working this case, I’m going to kill him, she thinks as she stifles another yawn.
She checks her phone and surprise, there’s no new texts, voicemails, or emails from Hotch. She selects his contact and hits dial, bringing the phone to her ear as she scans the identical doors for his apartment number.
You’ve reached SSA Aaron Hotchner— Emily groans out loud and snaps her phone shut, cutting off his voicemail, her irritation starting to border on anger. This wasn’t like Hotch, ignoring his phone. Sure they’d all been exhausted last night, but to the point he sleeps this late into the morning and doesn’t bother to answer his phone? No, something wasn’t right. She could feel it in her gut.
She should’ve gone home with him when he offered, but she knew how they operated when a case was over and they settled in for the night. One glass of wine would lead to another and, well, very little sleep would be had for either of them. She’d been so physically, mentally, and emotionally drained after Canada…just the thought of it now felt like a weight dragging down her shoulders. No, she’d needed to be alone; to shower and wash off the sick and twisted vestiges of the horrors she and the team had discovered on that pig farm.
After turning Hotch down, she’d smiled at him and winked and told him they could go and get a late breakfast once they’d had the opportunity to catch up on sleep. Now, a part of her was glad they’d caught a case. He probably would’ve slept through breakfast, anyway, she thought irritably. Ok, she wasn’t actually glad they’d caught a case. This one was a doozy and they needed every pair of eyes they could get if they were going to keep the doctor and his son safe; and they were running out of time. She hated cases that involved kids, no matter how old. They didn’t deserve the trauma that would result from having their own or their loved ones' lives threatened.
Finally, Hotch’s apartment comes into view. She tucks her phone into her jacket pocket and rapps her knuckles against the door.
“Hotch, it’s Emily,” she calls and knocks again. She pauses, straining her ears for the sound of shuffling footsteps. Her brow furrows when there is only continued silence.
“Hotch?” she repeats, this time there’s a question in the way she says his name. She knocks again, harder. Rolling her eyes, she digs her phone back out of her pocket and redials his number. A phone rings on the other side of the door, but there is no sound that suggests someone was moving toward it.
Emily’s stomach turns as dread begins to pool in her belly. The hair on the back of her neck stands on end as a sinking feeling takes hold. Her hand drifts to her gun instinctively; her thumb hooking over the rotating hood and releasing her sidearm. As she removes the weapon, she uses her other hand to reach for the doorknob. Before she even attempts to turn it, she knows it will open.
Hotch never leaves his door unlocked.
She pushes the door open and readies her weapon, quickly moving side to side as she sweeps the room for an immediate threat. Hotch’s keys, phone, and bag are on the coffee table and sofa as if he’d just arrived home but she didn’t see him in her initial glances over the open concept apartment. As she continues her sweep, her ears pick up on the sound of soft wheezing.
That same sinking feeling grows as she crosses through the living room and it’s then she sees the bullet hole in the wall and the glass shattered on the floor. She pushes through the feeling of dread, effectively burying it knowing she needs to be alert and prepared for whatever lay beyond the sofa. Hoping for an incapacitated unsub, but knowing better, her world still shatters as she takes in the sight of her friend, supervisor, and lover unconscious and bloody on the linoleum tiled floor.
She drops to her knees and feels for his pulse with two fingers. It’s faint, but there. “Hotch,” she calls his name and holsters her gun, determining the assailant is no longer present.
His dark lashes flutter. “That’s it,” she says encouragingly, “Open your eyes, Aaron. It’s me. It’s Emily.”
“Emily,” he whispers weakly.
She pulls out her phone again and dials 911. Placing it on speaker, she sets the phone down next to Hotch and begins unbuttoning his shirt to further assess the damage.
The operator answers and Emily cuts them off. “This is Agent Emily Prentiss with the FBI.” She grimaces as she haphazardly untucks the rest of his shirt and pushes the fabric out of her way. “I am at The Langham apartment complex, apartment 121. I’m here with SSA Aaron Hotchner. He’s suffered multiple stab wounds. I need paramedics and a crime scene unit sent here immediately.”
Her eyes rapidly scan the woulds, trying to assess which is the worst. God, there is so much blood. Shrugging out of her blazer, she balls the fabric in her fists and applies pressure to the two wounds that appear deepest, those to his abdomen and chest.
Aaron moans and she apologizes. “I know it hurts, just hold on. Help is coming.”
“Paramedics are seven minutes out,” dispatch states over the receiver.
She wants so desperately to hold his face in her hands, to be comforting him instead of causing more pain, but she needs to get the bleeding under control until help arrives.
Hotch’s lashes flutter again and his head lolls to the side where she is kneeling. “Foyet,” he breathes.
Emily’s eyes widen. “The Reaper is here, in DC?”
“I don’t—” his breath rattles as he wheezes. “He was waiting for me.”
“Did he say anything?” She asks as she adjusts her grip on the jacket she’s using to staunch the bleeding, of which is already seeping through the fabric. She curses under her breath, though the sound of sirens can finally be heard in the distance.
“Emily, if I don’t ma—”
“Don’t,” she interrupts, her voice catching. “Don’t even think about finishing that sentence, Aaron. You’re going to be fine.”
The sirens are deafening now and she knows they’re pulling up outside. She smiles and releases a short laugh. “They’re here,” she says. “Hold on, Hotch. Just a little longer.”
He blinks slowly, trying to focus on her. “He told me I should’ve,” his eyes close momentarily and then open, “that I should’ve made a deal.”
Her brow pinches, but she doesn’t have time to push further as the paramedics come crashing through the door.
“Over here!” she calls.
Immediately they try to take over. “Ma’am, it’s ok,” the female medic says. “You can take your hands off of him.”
It takes a moment for her voice to register, but Emily does as she is told. She releases the pressure she’d been holding to his injuries, and rolls back on to her heels into a standing position to give them space.
“Heart rate is elevated, pressure is dropping.” The medic evaluates. “Start an IV and hang pressors.”
Emily watches them work, her pulse pounding in her ears. While one pushes the IV into his arm, the other fastens a brace around his neck before moving on to snip away what’s left of his shirt and begin packing the knife wounds with gauze. It’s like the world is moving in slow motion. She doesn’t even register when her phone rings until the medic brings her attention to it. She blinks hard and apologizes. She bends down and scoops it into her hand, smearing blood across the screen as she flips it open. She curses as Spencer’s name flashes under the smudge. She turns her wrist to glance at her watch. It’s been forty five minutes and she told Reid that she’d be back in under thirty.
She wastes no time explaining the situation. Reid reports understanding. Before she hangs up she says, “Reid, it’s bad.” For the first time since finding him, tears choke her voice. “I’ll call Penelope at the hospital, but do not tell the others. You all need to focus on the case.”
Emily hastily hangs up and moves to follow the paramedics as they maneuver the gurney through the apartment.
They stop though as Hotch asks them to wait, his voice imperceptible. His hand falls limply off the gurney and Emily steps in, taking it into hers.
“What did he leave?” he asks, though his voice is muddled by the oxygen mask that’s been placed over his mouth and nose. “What did he take?”
“I-I don’t,” she stammers in response. The Reaper’s profile flashes through her mind’s eyes. The glasses, the wedding ring, he always takes and he always gives. “I don’t know, Hotch.”
She nods to the medics, signaling them to keep moving. Emily doesn’t drop his hand. As long as she can feel the warmth of his skin on hers, she knows he’s alive. That he’s still here.
Crime techs and police units are pulling up to the building as they load Hotch into the back of the ambulance. Emily watches on from her seat, anxiety clawing at her insides as she does her best to stay out of the paramedics’ way as they continue to work on stabilizing Hotch.
The blaring sirens echo in her head, rattling around and bouncing off of her skull. It’s not a sound she’s unfamiliar with, but today it’s drone seems more of a death march than a rally cry. The cavalry isn’t coming to save the day, but rather fleeing from death’s grip.
The ambulance comes to a grating stop and the medics waste no time flinging open the doors and pushing Hotch out. Emily follows quickly and as doctors and nurses swarm the gurney, arms reach out to halt her movement.
Emily cranes her neck around the woman that’s stopped her, pushing against her as she tries to follow the team of doctors that have disappeared behind two swinging double doors.
“No, I have to follow him. I’m an FBI agent,” she states, attempting to leverage some form of authority over the situation.
“Ma’am, he’s being rushed to surgery. I need to make sure you’re alright. Where are you injured?”
Emily’s face screws up, her lips turning and brow furrowing. “Injured? I’m not—” It’s then she catches a glimpse of her reflection in the lobby window. Her face is smeared with Hotch’s blood. Like pieces of a puzzle falling into place, her eyes drop to her hands, which are covered front and back with blood. The red substance stains the skin on her arms as well as the entire front of the dressy tank top she’d been wearing under her blazer. “It’s not mine,” she finally says.
The nurse’s face softens and Emily hates the way her eyes fill with sympathy. “Is there anyone I can call?”
Yeah, about 7, but they’re all occupied or on death’s door.
“No,” she says. “I can just,” she rubs her temple and takes a deep breath. “Where’s the closest waiting area?”
The nurse tsks and shakes her head. “No, no, come on,” she says, gesturing for Emily to follow her. “You can shower in the locker room. I’ll get a pair of scrubs for you to wear and a bag to store your clothes in.”
Emily thanks her and follow silently, twisting and turning through the many hallways until she reaches the door labeled “Women’s Locker Room.”
“There’s soaps and hair products in each shower. I’ll be right back. Go on in. I’ll leave everything on the bench for you.”
Emily nods her thanks and ducks inside. As she passes by the long stretch of mirror behind the row of sinks, her stomach lurches. It did look like she’d been on the receiving end of Foyet’s knife with how much blood covered the front of her body.
She tears her gaze away from her sullied figure and turns toward the showers. Slowly, she sinks down onto one of the wooden benches. Resting her elbows on her knees, she drops her head into her hands. Thick, hot tears blur her vision as she takes a shuddering breath.
2 minutes, she thinks. 2 minutes and then you pull yourself together.
No sooner does the thought cross her mind does the dam break and the tears free flow down her cheeks in thick, hot lines. She takes deep gasping breaths as the sobs rattle her body. Her mascara bleeds into her eyes, stinging them. Using the backs of her hands, she presses them to her eyes, wiping the tears away and no doubt smearing blood and makeup across her face in the process.
She blows out a breath and forces herself into a seated position. “He’s going to be alright,” she affirms to no one but herself. She stands on shaky legs and feels the weight of exhaustion slowly creeping into her muscles. She kicks out of her boots and undresses.
She swipes at the faucet inside the shower and doesn’t wait for it to warm up before standing under the icy stream of water. She gasps and sputters but keeps her face under the flow. Once the water begins to heat up, she opens her eyes and glances down at her feet. Blood sleuces down her legs in pink rivulets, swirling and disappearing down the drain.
She pumps the lavender scented shower gel into her hand from the dispenser on the wall and scrubs her skin until it’s red and raw. She works it under her nails and up and down her limbs. It feels like it’s stained her permanently, his blood, inked onto her like a tattoo. After washing her hair, she cuts the water off and squeezes the water from her dark locks. She pulls the shower curtain open and just as the nurse had said, everything had been left for her in a neat pile on the bench. The nurse had even bagged her dirty clothes for her, not like Emily would try to salvage them. She dresses quickly in the pair of blue scrubs. They're a little big on her, but it feels so good to not be wearing clothes soaked with Hotch’s blood.
Slowly, but surely, she retraces her steps back to the waiting room and the charge nurse at the desk tells her Hotch is still in surgery. Of course he is. It had only been twenty five minutes since she’d arrived.
At least if he’s still in surgery, he’s still alive, she thinks, though the thought is still far from comforting.
Reluctantly, Emily crosses the waiting room and sinks into one of the plastic covered chairs settling in for a painfully long afternoon that smelled like antiseptic.
It bewilders her to look down at the hard tile floor and not see a path worn down to the cement underneath. How long had she been pacing this same stretch of floor in the waiting room? Her thumb nail aches from where she’d been anxiously gnawing it down to the quick, a bad habit she’d fought for years to quit, but in her most vulnerable moments came back.
She glances down at her watch, of which she’d been ninety eight percent successful at cleaning free of Hotch’s blood. She’d have to send it out to get the bits stuck in between the interlocking pieces of the wrist band cleaned out. It had been three hours. She blows out an exasperated breath.
Surely there would have been some update by now. What if he’s—
She’s unable to finish the thought when a doctor pushes through the double doors where Hotch had disappeared behind earlier.
She perks up and sends up a silent prayer that he’s on his way to see her. He wears a surgeon’s cap, covering his short blonde hair, and as he meets her eyes, she knows it’s the doctor that operated on Hotch.
“Well?” she asks, her voice shaking with the anticipation of news. “How is he?”
The doctor approaches and slows to a stop in front of her. “It was touch and go there for a while. He lost a lot of blood. We were able to stabilize him, but it’ll take some time for him to heal. He’ll be out of commission for a month, maybe longer.”
“Can I see him?” Emily asks, eyes pleading.
A glimmer of sympathy flashes across the surgeon’s eyes. He nods. “He’s unconscious now. When he wakes, he’ll likely be out of it. He’s under the influence of some pretty strong painkillers.”
Emily swallows and nods as she inhales. “I understand.”
The doctor’s eyes shift then and Emily immediately realizes he’s got more to say. “Is there something more I should know?”
“Well,” he begins. “When you brought him, you confirmed with the paramedics and nurses that that is indeed, Aaron Hotchner.”
Emily’s features twist, puzzled by his question. “Yes?”
“We found this when we cut his clothes off of him.” He reaches into his pocket and passes Emily a bifold badge identical to hers. She flips it open, eyes widening as she reads Derek Morgan’s name and her mind flashes to several weeks earlier when he’d lost his credentials. George Foyet had stolen them from him.
“Thank you,” she says and tucks the badge into the scrubs pocket. “Derek is a member of our team. This relates to a case we’re working on. I’m afraid I can’t say more. Please,” she says, her words now a plea, “take me to him.”
The doctor hesitates, like he might say more, but he doesn’t. “Follow me, then.”
Her eyelids are so heavy, but she refuses to fall asleep in case he wakes up. She takes another sip from the now lukewarm hospital coffee. It’s bitter on her tongue and her stomach roils as it travels down her esophagus. When was the last time she ate? She glances at the clock and it’s pushing 3:00PM. School would be getting out soon. Her thoughts wander to Reid and the team, and if they’d had any luck with locating the unsub threatening the doctor and his son. How could this be the same day she’d woken up on? It felt like it had been days since she said goodnight and kissed Hotch goodbye after he walked her to her car last night. It was only this morning since they were supposed to go to breakfast and enjoy the rare day off from cases and unsubs and torture and murder.
She holds Hotch’s loose hand in hers, the feel of his skin and its warmth a comfort. She leans forward, elbows on her knees, and rotates his hand gently to hold it against her cheek. Closing her eyes, she leans into his palm and kisses the skin there gently. “I should’ve gone home with you,” she whispers, “Maybe I could’ve done something.”
She ponders the likelihood of that as she sits there watching the rise and fall of his chest, the steady beeping of the heart monitor pulsing rhythmically beside her. Now and then the blood pressure cuff around his arm hisses as it contracts and releases. What were the odds that her being there would’ve changed the outcome? The Reaper had almost exclusively killed couples, but those were in smaller enclosed settings. He took advantage of couples by trapping them in their vehicles, minimizing their ability to escape. Hotch might have still taken off his gun, but would she have? Would Foyet have even had the chance to get the shot off? Or would that bullet have gone into her instead of the wall?
“You’re going to drive yourself crazy, Emily,” she whispers to herself. She knows there is no sense in reviewing the ‘what if’s,’ but it seems impossible when her entire support system is unavailable and she’s keeping this monumental secret from them.
“Just wake up, Hotch,” she quietly pleads before pressing another kiss to his hand. “I just need you to be okay.”
Her eyes flare as she feels the slightest twitch against her ring finger. She sits up straighter and holds his hand in both hers.
“Hotch?”
Her breathing stills. Did she imagine that? She squeezes his hand in hers.
“It’s Emily, Aaron. I’m here.”
Faintly, his fingers press into hers. An excited bubble of laughter escapes her lips as relief floods through her veins. She kisses his knuckles. “Thank God,” she whispers.
“Emi—” his voice is hoarse as he starts, but doesn’t finish her name. His eyes don’t open, but his head tilts in her direction.
“I’m right here, Hotch,” she says, shushing him. “I’m not going anywhere. Just, just rest.”
Hotch hums a response but doesn’t articulate anything further than that.
“Emily!” Garcia’s voice is filled with both pain and relief.
She sits up and gingerly lays Hotch’s hand back down on the bed. “Penelope!” Emily stands up and quickly closes the space between them and pulls her into a tight embrace.
“Oh, honey,” Penelope soothes as she rubs a hand up and down Emily’s back. “I’m so sorry you were dealing with this all by yourself.” She pulls away and looks her up and down from behind the lenses of her purple glasses.
“I’m so glad to see you,” Emily says. Her brow pinches. “But the team, the case—”
Penelope’s pink-painted lips curve into a smile as she holds up a manicured finger, cutting her off. “Not to worry, my sweet girl. The case is closed. The team saved the day. All is good in the world.” Penelope purses her lips as she pauses. “Well, except for the part where Agent Hotchner was treated like mincemeat and Reid was shot.”
Emily’s head snaps up. “Reid was what?” she shouts.
Penelope’s eyes widen and the glittery green eyeshadow she’s applied to her eyelids shines under the fluorescent hospital lighting. She waves her hands in front of her body, the multi-colored bangles on her wrist jingling as she does so. “No, no, no, no, no,” she repeats again and again. “He’s fine, he’s fine. He caught one in the leg, but he’s ok. I think he’s being patched up down the hall.”
Emily is already halfway out the door as she calls over her shoulder, “Maybe lead with that next time!”
Penelope’s high-heeled clad feet click and clack as she teeters after her. “Sorry!” she cries as she catches up to her. “So much has happened today I’m just glad that everyone is ok, well, as ok as one can be given the circumstances of the last 72 hours.”
Emily inclines her head to the side and blows air out through her nose. “You could say that again.” Without pausing to peer inside and be sure she’s in the right room, she enters the only other hospital room with an open door, the sound of voices telling her she’s found the right place.
Morgan, Rossi, and JJ stand around the hospital. They’re faces all bear surprised expressions and confusion. Somehow she finds it in herself to crack a joke, “Guys, I get it. My Prada boots don’t match the scrubs, it’s not that bad.”
Morgan breaks apart from the semi-circle that’s formed around Spencer, who also looks incredibly happy to see her despite his injured leg, and pulls her into a hug. “You could’ve called,” he chastises.
Emily rolls her eyes as she pulls away and transitions into JJ’s open arms. “You would’ve made the same call, Morgan. He grunts in response and she smirks to herself.
“How’s Hotch?” Spencer asks, using his fists to push himself into a sitting position without bending his braced leg.
Emily blows out a breath. “He’s in pretty bad shape, I won’t lie. What do we have on Foyet? Anything?”
Rossi shakes his head. “Nothing yet. Crime techs are still going over the apartment.”
“Someone needs to tell them to look for anything that looks like it might be missing; disturbed dust, signs something was torn from something, anything.”
“What are you getting at, Emily?” Derek asks.
Her gaze locks on his as she reaches into her pocket. Without looking, she passes his credentials to him. His eyes shimmer with concern as he takes his badge from her. “Where did you find this?”
“The surgeon,” she gestures aimlessly toward the day. “It was in his pants pocket. Foyet must have put it there after he,” she pauses, voice wavering.
“Ok,” Morgan says, tucking his badge into his pocket. “Thanks, Emily. Rossi, can you?”
“Already on it,” Rossi answers, phone up to his ear. Someone answers almost immediately and he begins to deliver instructions to them regarding this development.
Suddenly, a wave of dizziness and nausea crashes over her. Emily takes a step and stumbles, catching herself on the rail of Spencer’s hospital bed.
“Emily!” Spencer and JJ shout in unison, though JJ is the one to catch her, holding her up with a supportive arm.
Emily blinks twice, hard. The wave passes and she straightens, shrugging out of JJ’s arms though JJ keeps her hand on her back just in case.
“Prentiss, when’s the last time you had something to eat or drink?” Morgan asks, and he sounds more like her father, than her friend.
Her eyes search the room for a clock and quickly land on the digital red numbers blinking up from a small box on the bedside table. 6:04 PM blinks back at her. “What time did we land last night?” she asks.
Morgan releases an exasperated sigh. “That’s it, I’m taking you home.” He reaches for her arm and Emily recoils. “No, Morgan. I’m fine. I need to stay here. Hotch—”
“Will be fine,” he finishes. His brown eyes are hard, but there’s concern in them too. “You’re no good to him, or anyone here if you pass out. Come on. I’ll take you home.”
Emily emerges from her bathroom smelling like her own vanilla-scented shower gel and floral shampoo. She pulls her robe around her and pulls the ties around her waist, securing it at her navel. She smells a combination of aromatic spices and exits the bedroom to find Morgan closing the door to her apartment. In his hand is a white plastic bag, its sides fit to bursting from the number of styrofoam takeout containers stacked inside.
He smiles, flashing a row of white teeth as he does so. He holds up the bag and shakes it, wiggling his hips as he does so. “I got your favorite,” he sing-songs. “We are going to have an Indian feast. We got butter chicken. We got chana masala. We got paneer, and girl, we got enough naan to last us a lifetime.”
Emily smiles, though it feels almost wrong to do so when Hotch and Spence are in the hospital and Foyet is still out there.
As if reading her thoughts, Morgan shakes his head and drops the food on her coffee table. “No,” he says as he shakes his head. “Nope, come on,” he takes her by the hand and guides her to the sofa. “You are allowed to eat and rest. Hotch is stable and Penelope is knitting the world’s longest scarf at his bedside as we speak. JJ just texted me and they’re taking Spencer home now.” He plops on the couch and pulls her down to sit beside him. “You’re only job right now,” he says as digs in his pocket and pulls out a plastic-wrapped set of disposable silverware, “is to eat, drink, and sleep.”
Emily wakes with a start. Very seldom did she fall asleep on the couch. The credits to How to Lose A Guy in Ten Days roll on the flat screen. She pushes herself into a seated position and that’s when she realizes she’d fallen asleep on Morgan’s shoulder. He stirs but doesn’t wake as she stands and picks up the now very empty takeout boxes. She crinkles the aluminum foil linings as quietly as she can as she pushes the trash down into the bin in her kitchen. The headache she’d had when they’d left the hospital is gone, thanks to the many glasses of water Morgan has pushed in front of her. She flips off the kitchen light and crosses back into the living room where she picks up the remote to turn off the TV. Pulling the throw blanket off of the back of the couch, she tosses it over Morgan’s hulking frame and her lips curve into a half smile as he subconsciously snuggles into the plush blanket.
“Goodnight, Derek,” she whispers as she walks to her bedroom and shuts the door behind her. She leans her back against the wood of the door. Light from the streetlights streams in through her partially open blinds, casting strange shadows around the room. She twists them shut, blocking out the light, and climbs into bed. Her muscles ache as she sinks into the mattress, finally allowing them to relax and after making them carry her through the day. She turns onto her side and stares at the empty space beside her. She pictures Hotch resting his head on the pillow next to hers, smiling and telling her goodnight; what they should’ve been doing last night. Instead, he’d been mutilated on the floor of his home, where he was supposed to feel safe after a day of combatting danger.
She blinks back tears and pushes the thought from her mind. “Hotch is fine,” she whispers, reminding herself. As her eyes fall shut and she allows sleep to finally drag her into its cool embrace, she thinks of Hotch squeezing her hand in the hospital. She thinks of its warmth. It’s enough to promise her a dreamless sleep, and that’s far better than being haunted by nightmares.
Emily wakes with the sun. The golden light streams through the blinds in slats across her bed. She glances at the clock and it reads 6:34 AM. A full 7 hours, that was more sleep than she’d had since before the team left for Canada.
After quickly going through the motions of her morning routine: washing her face, brushing her teeth and hair, and dressing in a comfortable pair of leggings and Hotch’s old FBI Academy sweatshirt, she emerges from her bedroom.
Morgan is still right where she left him, though at some point during the night, he’d stretched the length of his body across the whole of the couch. She stifles a laugh. One leg is dangling off of the couch while one arm is stretched straight out overhead. His mouth hangs open as he cuddles the bulk of the throw blanket against his chest. Silently, she pads across the room to where she left her phone on the kitchen counter. Approaching a sleeping Derek with as little sound as she can muster, she flips open her cell phone and snaps a pic. Derek’s eyes snap open and widen as he immediately sees Emily with the phone in hand.
“Oh hell, no!” he jumps up from the couch but before he can take one step, the throw blanket twists around his ankles effectively tripping him. Those three seconds are enough for Emily to text the photo to Garcia.
“Gimme that phone!” Derek orders as he finally makes it to his feet and tries to wrangle it from her. As he wraps his arms around her from behind, Prentiss can’t help but laugh. “Too late, Morgan. I already sent her the photo of Sleeping Beauty. You know that’s going in the archive.”
Morgan releases her and points a finger at her. “As long as it doesn’t make it into the slideshow at the Christmas party.”
Emily arches an eyebrow and tilts her head back and forth, weighing the likelihood of that. “We’ll have to see about that.”
Morgan laughs and his features soften into a gentle smile. He inclines his head toward her. “It’s good to hear you laugh.”
She feels heat rise to her cheeks, and a small wave of guilt crashes over her. She allows it to do so and then envisions it cresting before rolling gently over a sandy beach. She takes a deep breath and smiles knowing that Hotch would want her to be laughing and joking despite what he’s been through. He’d remind her that Foyet would’ve been there regardless of if she’d come home with him. And she knew that he’d be telling her that he was glad she wasn’t there, because he couldn’t bear to see anything happen to her.
“Thanks for last night,” she says. “I really needed it.”
Morgan waves her off. “Nah, it’s nothing. We’re family, Prentiss.”
“I know,” she says with a smile. “Do you want to grab breakfast or a coffee? I’m going to head back to the hospital and relieve Garcia.”
Morgan claps his hands together, “That shitty diner on 8th?”
Emily moans at the thought of a sausage, egg, and cheese bagel crammed into a plastic red basket overrun by a mountain of red potatoes. “Oh my God, yes. You know, I don’t know what they put in their food, and I don’t think I want to, but damn, a big pile of grease is exactly what I need right now.
Morgan grabs the car keys off the counter and pockets them. “I’m driving.”
Derek drops her off at the hospital’s front entrance. He rolls down the window as she circles the car. “Tell Garcia I’m waiting for her.”
Emily’s lips quirk into a half smile. “I’ll be sure to tell her her chariot awaits.” She raises her cup of coffee to him, “Thank you, Derek. For last night.”
He winks, “That’s what family’s for, right?”
She nods and turns toward the hospital. She navigates the twists and turns of the hallways, keeping out of the way of doctors and nurses as they go about their duties. After signing in at the nurses station, she shoulders her purse, picks up both cups of coffee and heads toward Hotch’s room.
“Knock, knock,” she vocalizes, unable to physically knock on the half open door. Using her shoulder, she pushes it open and steps inside.
“Emily!” Garcia greets cheerfully. She sits in a chair near the hospital bed. Her chunky ring-adorned fingers hold knitting needles paused in mid-air, a lengthy scarf made up of maroon fibers hanging down to her ankles.
Her eyebrows knit together as she eyes the scarf. She smiles at her friend. “Been busy?”
“I think I fell asleep to the sound of those needles clacking together,” Hotch says. Emily’s attention shifts to him and her smile widens. The bed is angled, allowing him to rest in a half-seated position. There seems to be more color on his face today and that floods her chest with warmth. Just barely, he inclines his head toward her. “Is one of those for me?”
Emily sucks air through her teeth. “Ooo, sorry. This is for Penelope.”
Garcia perks up. “Yes, please!” she says. “Give that caffeine to mama.” She lays her knitting needles in her lap and holds out her hands, thanking Emily when she passes her the cup.
“Morgan is waiting for you at the entrance.”
A flirtatious grin crosses Penelope’s lips. “My knight in shining armor, come to get me from this extra sanitary antiseptic-rich tower. Someone catch me as I swoon.” She tucks the mass of yarn into her bag and stands. “It’s been a pleasure, sir. I’ll have this scarf waiting for you on your desk when you return.”
As she passes Emily, she gives her a peck on the cheek. “He’s all yours, kitten.” She sashays out of the room, gently shutting the door behind her on the way out.
The room is small and she crosses the short space in a matter of steps. She exhales as she takes the seat previously occupied by Penelope. Hotch flexes his hand as he inches it closer to the bedside and Emily takes it in hers.
“How are you feeling?” he asks, squeezing her hand.
Emily breathes out a short laugh. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”
“Well, I feel like I’ve been stabbed nine times, but that’s to be expected. I understand that you almost fainted yesterday.”
“I—” Emily’s mouth clamps shut as she feels the weight of his hard stare on her. “Did Garcia say that? I wouldn’t say I fain—”
“Emily.”
She hates that tone of voice. His supervisory voice. The one he uses to give orders. The one he uses when they’re acting as colleagues, not partners.
She rolls her eyes. “Hotch, don’t give me that look.” She then aims a pointed look of her own towards him. “And you’re not my boss right now. In fact, you’re not even allowed to think about work for the next four to six weeks as far as I’m concerned, so lose the ‘I’m-your-boss’ tone.”
Aaron’s brow arches slightly at her challenge. “Fair enough,” he relents. “You didn’t answer my question though. How are you feeling?”
Emily relaxes as his tone does and gently taps his fingers with her own. “Better than I was yesterday. Morgan took me home. He ordered takeout, I made him watch my favorite chick flick—”
“ How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days?”
Emily’s jaw drops, her open mouth smiling. “You remembered that?”
“I heard you and JJ talking about it on the plane,” he answers, smiling. “I do my best to remember little things like that about everyone,” he inclines his head towards her, “you especially.”
Emily can’t fight the pinkening of her cheeks. “Why do you do that?”
“It reminds me that we’re all individuals beyond the case files; that we’re not just behavior analysts, that we don’t just spend time studying and watching the why’s, what’s, and how’s that make up other people’s lives, but that we have those same qualities about ourselves. That we have hobbies and interests and beliefs outside of the bureau. If I don’t do that, well, I wouldn’t be a very good boss, now would I?”
A small sound of disbelief passes her lips. She’d had the pleasure of scaling the walls that he’d erected to distance himself from others allows him to lead his team from a place free of bias, but hearing him dictate that despite all of that and the image he projects, he is still internalizing all the bits and pieces that make each of them human. That that’s what makes him human.
“Ya know, if the team finds out you’re actually a big softie, you’ll never hear the end of it.” She says.
“Yes,” his lips twitch into a soft smile. “Well, I think they know that and just choose not to say anything about it.” He squeezes her hand again. “I’ll have to thank Morgan. I’m sorry for what you must have gone through.”
Her face falls. “Oh, Aaron don’t. You don’t need to—”
His eyes are hard again as he speaks. “I do. To find me like that after what we’d all gone through together in Canada. It couldn’t have been easy. Your response time was critical. I know you, Emily. I know you immediately had to force yourself into action. I know you had to bury your emotions to see past me; to see past your colleague and partner. And I know that wasn’t easy. I also know you couldn’t tell anyone else because you didn’t want to distract them from the case at hand. I also know that you were willing to sit in the waiting room covered in my blood until you knew I was alright. You did all of this on little food and drink, and even less sleep.”
Emily stares at his hand around hers, unmoving, as he speaks. In her mind’s eyes, the images of yesterday flash in rapid succession: finding him, his face twisted in pain as she applied pressure to the stab wounds, stumbling out of the ambulance as he was whisked out of reach, his blood spiraling down the drain in the hospital’s locker room…
“Emily.” Her name is lighter on his tongue this time; not an order, but a light guiding her back to the present moment. Her eyes focus on him and relief floods throughout her entire body. His hand is warm in hers.
Suddenly, pressure builds in her eyes, the heavy heat that comes before tears. She swallows and when she finds her voice, it wavers, “I was so scared, Aaron.”
“I know.”
“If I hadn’t found you, if you’d di—” Her voice breaks and she swallows the growing lump in her throat. She breathes deeply in a poor attempt to compose herself.
“But I didn’t,” Aaron states firmly. “Emily, I’m alive because you found me. Don’t sit here and torture yourself with ‘what-ifs.’ You know better than that.”
Emily nods and tucks the strands of hair that have fallen from her ponytail behind her ears. “You’re right, I’m just,” she sighs, “I wish there was more that I could do.”
“What you’re doing is already enough,” he says. “And,” he adds, “if the idea of moving my body didn’t make me think I’d physically pass out from the pain, I’d be putting my arms around you so you’d feel comforted and trust that I am so utterly grateful that you chose to go home that night.”
His fingers twitch, but he winces as he tries to lift them off the mattress. Emily reacts immediately and slips her cool slender fingers back into his hand. His are longer, rougher, and curl around hers.
When Emily speaks, her voice is soft. If she speaks any louder she’ll fear it’ll crack and she doesn’t want to cry again. “When they say you can leave here,” she starts and allows her lips to twitch into a whisper of a smile, “Can I come home with you?”
Hotch smiles in turn. “Come here.”
Emily stands and leans down, her bound hair falling just so over her shoulder as she does.
“Closer,” he says and she acquiesces, lowering herself so that her lips are hovering just over his and she can feel his breath on her skin.
His lips are as light as air as he brushes a feather-light kiss against her mouth. It’s all that he can do in his current condition, but the feel of it is enough to melt the icy grief that had been clinging to her these last thirty-six hours, and now it felt as though the sun was shining on her bare skin in this small sterile hospital room.
“My home is your home, Emily. And you’ll always be welcome.”

hi, guys!!
i’m finally getting motivation to write and this is a little sneak peek of a fic that’ll probably be posted very soon <3 snippet below the cut
When Aaron and Emily begin dating it’s all about sneaking around in each other’s offices and kissing in the car. There’s something so very satisfying and special about them being a secret. About the secret glances they send to each other at work, both of them knowing something no one else did.
What Aaron loves most about their relationship, though, is that he’s realized he can read Emily even better now. He used to think he understood her every movement; every glance at the ground, every mental sigh, every lip bite.

I am looking for two hotchniss fanfics these are their descriptions from what I can remember I don’t remember the people who posted them or titles so I’m begging the hotchniss fandom to PLEASE help a girl out cause I’ve spent literally all day search for them (no joke I spent the last eight hours scrolling through all my likes to find them my screen time will prove it)
Fic 1: Emily was interrogating a perp who killed pregnant women and Emily was like almost due or smth and she starts having contractions while interviewing the unsub and when he finally confesses she comes out and says that she’s in labor Derek and Aaron are all pressed that she didn’t listen and went in anyways
Fic 2: this description is a little more vague but it’s set in the s7 finale where Emily and hotch are dancing, their relationship is still secret and she’s thinking about leaving since they haven’t been together long or doesn’t want to be a secret. Hotch kisses her on the dance floor to convince her to stay so she does (Beth didn’t exist in this fic)

LOST IN THE FIRE
Hi guys!
I got so inspired today and I wrote you this wee AU, because I wanted to remix a bit of the storyline, much more to my taste. Hopefully you’ll like it, let me know what you’re are thinking about !
Enjoy, xx
*
In this story Doyle is dead and Emily is in Paris because she hadn’t come back yet to the BAU, unable to arrest him herself because of her bad injuries. Aaron is in DC and can’t stop thinking about all the times he missed his chances to tell Emily how perfect she was.
Dave was fed up.
She had set a routine to feel better. Metro, boulot, dodo.
And she didn’t like it. She didn’t feel home in this city, everything was remembering her the unhappy childhood she had. Everyday was pretty much the same, she had to go to therapy, then the physiotherapy and after that Emily was too exhausted to do something else.
She would pour herself a glass of her favorite wine and then enjoy it silently in the living room, observing the city through her windows, missing her life in America and all the persons she considered as friends, as family. She missed them so much. Usually she would fall asleep for a bit, and once woken up the hardest part of her day was crawling to her bedroom to sleep, or at least try because nightmares were still very active in her mind.
But tonight her routine was about to change forever and she had no ideas her life in Paris would change.
Aaron was soaking wet, he had been walking in the rainy city still trying to figure out why he was here. Because you were worried about her you dumbass. Because Dave forced you to take this plane. Because you’re an idiot and you’ll die alone if you never tell her. He shakes his head, yes he was worried about her but did it really justified a 10h flight ?
He had always heard of Paris as the city of love and it was ironic because since Haley he had been too afraid to tell his feelings to the woman of his heart. Aaron could almost hear his oldest friend David Rossi telling him to stop thinking because they were made for each other, because he had seen how they were flirting together. Aaron couldn’t remember a day passing by without Dave telling him the only person who didn’t know he was in love with Emily, was Emily herself. And same situation for her. But yet he couldn’t tell her, she was his best friend and he couldn’t ruin this. As destroying as it was, he was ready to have her as a friend only than being rejected and not having her anymore.
Get it together Hotch!
When he arrived at her door he felt anxious, suddenly wanting to go back to the airport and leave like nothing had ever happened. But his body made the physical move his mind couldn’t do and before he could realize he had already knocked at her door. Aaron heard some steps behind the door, swallowing hard. When he saw her he couldn’t but think she was beautiful. Her hair was longer, her curtains bangs falling on each side of her face, her cheeks were finer than they were few months ago. “Hi.” He whispered, not knowing what else to say.
She took seconds before realizing he was standing in her doorway. “What the…Aaron…I…” she shook her head, letting him in. “You’re soaking wet, let me help you with it..” she said as he took off his coat, still unable to speak.
He observed her, she was leaning on a cane and he cursed himself one more time for what happened in Boston, for not protecting her from this bastard. And from a moment he saw them back them back there when she was bleeding on the floor, thinking she was dead.
“Do you want some wine?” She asked, taking him back on earth.
He blinked, rapidly nodding and following her in the kitchen, feeling more guilty when he saw the way she was walking. “It’s good to see you.”
She turned and smiled to him. “It’s good to see you too Aaron.” And the way she told his name made a knowing feeling grows inside of him, she was still dissociating Hotch from Aaron.
Back in the living room they silently cheered, Emily still couldn’t believe he was here in Paris, sharing some of her boring routine. She awkwardly broke the silence, looking deeply at him. “What brings you here Aaron, don’t tell me you came all this way just to drink some wine with me?” She tried to joke.
“I’ve missed you.”
He wasn’t looking at her, he was staring a the beautiful Paris skyline but she knew he was being honest with her. Because she had missed him too. Emily slowly turned his head so he could look at her, letting him know it was a mutual feeling. He looked so broke that it made her heart falls in pieces. “I’ve been thinking about you, you know. A lot…”
He was about to speak but she continued, like she couldn’t just stop. “I kept thinking of you because it was the only memories I could focus on, and not only during therapy. I remembered it from the day we’ve met, to the day I’ve almost died in Boston.” At this point he could hear her voice breaks, but she continued. “I couldn’t stop thinking of all the times we’ve been hanging out together, with Jack, the zoo is so far my favorite day. I don’t remember I’ve been that happy in my entire life, on this day I’ve felt normal, I never had a normal family time and I don’t know, it made me feel like I was finally fitting somewhere. And when I arrived here everything fall appart, because I was on my own and..”
She broke into a sob, feeling pathetic and stupid. But when he slowly pressed his lips against hers, she couldn’t not answer, and their salty kiss finished her speech, letting him know she felt the same he was feeling about her.
“I too couldn’t stop thinking about you, and Jack always tells me how much he loves you. We miss you.” He couldn’t tell her he was missing her more than his little boy, that would be a lie and Emily was still a profiler, she would definitely recognize a lie.
“Is he going well ?” She can’t help but smile, remembering this sweet bundle of joy. And as Aaron showed her the pic he always kept in his wallet, she felt like the nostalgic leaving her body.
“I missed him too.” She simply replies, almost able to hear his sweet and innocent laugh through the appartement she almost shared with them back in DC. And as memories crossed their mind, Emily buried her hands in his hair, smiling when she smelled his cologne, the same since day one.
“You never changed it.” She whispers in his ear, kissing his sensitives spots. “You did not change…”
At this point he’s not sure if she’s speaking of his cologne or all the little things that made him love her more than anything. “Never.” He simply replies lowly, curling his fingers into her dark and soft hair. She was intoxicated by him and when she curled up against him, Aaron released his breath, allowing him to finally enjoy this time with her. They always used to have naps like this when she used to come at his place to spend some time with them. But then had never kissed before, because they both didn’t want ruin to their friendship.
It’s only an hour later he woke up, carefully picking her up and making his way to the bedroom. She was so precious and seeing her hurt made his heart breaks because Emily didn’t deserve it. At this very moment Aaron realized all he wanted was to care of her, and be here for her. He then quickly fell asleep next, not wanting to think about it now.
Emily woke up in the middle of the night because of the usual pain in her body. She was used to it, it has been a few months but her doctors were thinking it was normal, that she needed a lot of time to recover. She quickly got up and made sure not to wake him up, he looked so peaceful. On her way to the bathroom Emily realized how lucky she got, she didn’t expect Aaron to come over and especially in Paris. They hadn’t always been this close but after Foyet and Doyle, their relation grew up very quickly. They both had their traumas and stories and having each other definitely helped them recover mentally, their bodies were still bruised but with time it was easier to accept it. However Emily wasn’t sure she was ready to show her news scars to Aaron, even if she knew he wouldn’t mind because he had his owns, and she had been the one helping him accept them.
She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn’t hear him arrive behind her. It’s only when she felt his bare torso against her back and his arms curling around her that she shivered, softly turning her head to look at him.
“Why are you up sweetheart ?” He whispered to her ear, making her shiver one more time. “Is everything alright ?”
“Yeah, we should go back to bed don’t you think?” She turned in his embrace, slowly kissing him. It was a new sensation, something she had wanted to know since day one when they met. She still wasn’t sure if that was the right thing to do, but they were here together for now and it’s all what mattered.
He guided her to the bed, helping her so she could take his arm instead of her cane. And when she curled up against him none of them spoke, because they wanted to appreciate the moment, tangled together in Paris, the city of love. She listened to his heart beats, noticing how relaxed he seemed and he just looked at her, playing with her hair.
“Does it change something ?” She whispered shyly, unable to look at him, unable to be disappointed if he was telling her otherwise than what she wanted the most. “Between us?”
The seconds he took to answers were the longest ever. “No, it just changes in a better perspective. If that’s what you want.” He replies with a soft voice, kissing the top of her head.
“I do. Do you ?”
“Yes.”
She smiled against his torso, trying to get as close as she could from him. For years she had been in love with him but always thought it would be unprofessional. So she tried to set her barriers so neither of him or her would be hurt by something they couldn’t have.
“Since the first day we’ve met, I always had a soft spot for you.” He confessed, knowing she would understand. Back in times he was still married to his high school sweetheart but Emily had made something fo his heart, she was different, and everything about her turned him on.
“And now you have a soft spot for me?” She lifted her up a bit so they could look at each other. He nodded simply, pressing his lips against her, feeling already the desire grows inside his body.
She definitely felt it too because her eyes went wide for a second. She softly chuckled, pressing soft kisses on his neck and torso. He closed his eyes, sighting. “Don’t make me want you more than I already want sweetheart..”
She traced some circles over his torso, not stopping what she was doing, making him shivers, definitely feeling his hardness against her core. She wanted him so bad, they had been waiting too long and tonight they would make love for the first time, showing each other how much loved they needed to be.
“I want you.” She simply said in between kisses.
“Fuck.” He groaned as he felt her fingers curled around his shaft. He couldn’t wait more and slowly pinned her on her back, trying to move carefully so he wouldn’t her hurt. The look over her face made him know she didn’t care because she wanted him as much as he wanted her.
“Make love to me Aaron.”
It was almost a pleading and how could Aaron Hotchner could turn her down when he was dying for her. “I’ll make you come so many times you won’t be able to walk for real sweetheart.” his voice low and dark, his eyes turning darker they originally were, his whole body reacting too much at the sight of her against him.
They slowly made love that night, ending curled up naked again each other. Aaron was rubbing her back with his hand, unable to find sleep, it had been too extraordinary. She was perfect. And he knew that no matters what, it was better for them to be extraordinary together than ordinary appart.
“Come home with me.” He whispered, covering her so she would get cold. “Come back to DC to Jack and I.”
She simply nodded, almost fast asleep and Aaron couldn’t help but smile, only realizing that without this Italian bastard he would still be in DC, with his feelings and frustration buried inside of his heart. He owed Dave a good one.
Back in DC, the team was having some time off waiting for another psychopath to come out. As he poured some coffee for him Rossi looked over to JJ who seemed particularly happy.
“What’s going on that make you so happy?” He gave her a cup, the blonde smiling to him with this I-have-a-good-feeling.
“Did Hotch left for Paris ?” She just asked ta randomly, knowing he knew the truth.
Rossi eyed her, almost forgetting this whole office was full of profilers. He shrugged at her, trying to figure out how he could get away from this and cursing Hotch for making him promise not to tell everyone. “I don’t know, why?”
“Oh come on Rossi!” She chuckled. “We all know he went there and even bet on it, you’re the only one who didn’t participate and we’re about to close it, so if you could just say yes we would be really happy.”
And as she told so, the Italian looked over her shoulder to see that Morgan, Penelope, Reid and even Alex were eyeing on them, waiting for his answer. “You’re definitely not taking this from young lady!”
And he left before she could convince him otherwise so.
“Well, I told you he wouldn’t say a word.” Derek said when she came back to their desks, looking disappointed. “He’s a grave, and loyal, even with the best scotch bottle he wouldn’t have said a word.”
“I’m sure Bossman really went to Paris, nobody saw the signs or am I the only one to noctice?” Pen added, looking too joyful and involved in this story.
“Signs? Like what ?” JJ asked with curiosity.
“Hotch is very secret we all know this. But since Emily had been transfer to Paris, he’s acting different. He has this little hope in the eyes whenever his cell phone rings and sometimes when he walks in the corridor thinking no one is watching him, he looks at the pic we took last year, when Emily was still in DC. And I’m not even talking about all the times they were flirting with each other, pretending we were being paranoid and saying that nothing happened. He had been in love with her since day and the only person who didn’t know it was Emily herself.” She recited quickly, not bothering to speak very high. “Did I tell you what I saw 6 months ago when we were at the bar in Dallas ?”
“You’re about to tell us baby girl…” Morgan teased her, all of the members listening while Rossi was watching them from his office, apparently speaking on the phone.
“You have to come back. I’m serious, I always forget how brilliants these profilers are.” he said to the phone, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Seriously, get you ass here and tell them the truth.”
All he heard was two laughs from the other side side of the line.
“These kids are going to kill me I swear on my nonna’s head.” He mumbled fo himself before hanging up.

These Wounds We Heal Part 9
The Time He Wakes Up Next To Her
Aaron Hotchner/Emily Prentiss
Wordcount: 2.5K
Rating: M
A/N: So much like Emily Prentiss herself, I am now back from the dead. Uhhh.. life happened? I got a job, got a cat, got married, and now we’re here and I finally went back to this fic. I still adore it very much and am going to work on adding more and more chapters as I get the time. Thank you for those of you who left so many kind messages here and on AO3 encouraging me to continue to write this story. I will take my time, but I will not let you down!
Read on AO3 here or below the cut!
Catch up with parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8.
What do we do now?
It’s that phrase that’s been bouncing around in her head for the past several minutes as she lies in her bed, staring at the clock, ignoring the heat rising from the mass that laid to her left.
When she awoke, there was a moment she thought it might have been a dream. Until she opened her eyes to see the soft back of him filling her vision, and she realized that the man lying next to her was very real, and very naked.
Dr. Aaron Hotchner was in her bed.
She had sex with Dr. Aaron Hotchner.
The thought makes her roll onto her back to stare at the ceiling, a smile ghosting over her lips.
Something this tangible was never what she thought of when she conjured up thoughts of sleeping with him previously. Sure she had fantasized about what he would taste like, sound like, feel like. But no part of her fantasy detailed the way that she would wake him up the next morning. What he would look like with sleep in his eyes, wrapped in the scent of her laundry detergent. She certainly hadn’t considered that the next idea that popped into her head would be that she never wanted to wake up alone again.
Now that was dangerous.
Oh Emily, what have you gotten yourself into?
“I can hear you thinking” a gruff voice interrupted her spiraling, making her jump.
“How long have you been awake?”
“Just about as long as you have” he mumbles, turning to draw her closer to him, dropping a hand over her waist while his lips grazed the back of her neck. “Having a kid turns you into a light sleeper.”
She hums in response, enjoying the feeling of his breath on her back, his heat enveloping her senses.
“And you were planning to tell me when?” she teases, following his lead and pressing herself into him. She felt him smile into her neck, the lips pressing against her becoming undeniably intentional as she wiggled her hips.
“As soon as you were done thinking” he whispers.
She can only respond with a groan as the lips on her neck start to trail to her collarbone, dotting her skin with light pink marks. His fingers are drifting lower, and she finds herself pressing into the pads of his fingers as they trace the outline of her navel down to just below the dip of her stomach.
“So are you planning on sharing?”
“Hmm?” She hums, finding it much easier to ignore her previous strain of thoughts when his hands are finding their way to her hips.
“What you were thinking about”
“Since you’re so good at profiling,” she teases as she rolls towards him. “You tell me.”
She faces him and can finally take in the image of a naked Aaron Hotchner beneath her bed sheets.
It’s breathtaking.
He kisses her, long and deep, tasting of morning and promises.
“Well I hope you weren’t thinking of how to get me out of your bed” he teases with a smile, both of their hands taking the opportunity to explore.
She shakes her head, feeling delightfully silly as she relishes in the feeling of him holding her in the morning light.
“Good to know” he smirks, placing a kiss on her forehead.
“I think then…” a kiss on her cheek.
“You’re thinking…” a kiss on her chin.
“What happens next?”
Her stunned silence betrays her, and his eyes twinkle with victory.
“You’re good Hotchner I’ll give you that” she concedes, taking the opportunity to run her thumb over the scruff on his chin.
“Well, I don’t have to pick up Jack until 3. So I’d say what happens next is you and I stay in this bed until” he makes a show of rolling his eyes back in thought until she giggles. “Around 2:30. And then the next time you and I don’t have a night where we’re chasing bad guys or stitching them up, I take you out to dinner”
“And then what?”
She finds herself desperate to hear his answer, her hands falling still as she stares into his eyes. They soften as he stares at her, and for a moment she can almost forget about the bad guys, about the ex-wives, the demanding parents and nosy coworkers, about everyone else in the world but him.
But the lives they lead are not conducive to forgetting. And they both know that.
He doesn’t answer, instead wrapping her in his arms tighter than she imagined was possible and kissing her deeply.
It’s a masterclass in avoidance but right now it will do. The fact that they found their way into bed together was a miracle in and of itself, who was she to question fate when it had already led them here. And who was she to question Dr. Hotchner when his ever growing erection was pressing insistently into her thigh.
It seemed, however, that fate had other plans for them this morning.
The sharp trill of her ringtone breaks their embrace, and reluctantly she detangles herself from him with a groan.
The only consolation she receives is his frustrated grunt in response, causing her to smirk as she reads the caller ID before promptly answering.
“Prentiss”
“Hope you don’t have any fun weekend plans. We have a case”
Morgan was suspicious from the moment she walked onto the plane.
His eyes burn holes into her back as he watches her walk down the aisle, and she can’t decide whether avoiding eye contact or making eye contact would be a better defense. It takes him 10 minutes after they hit cruising altitude to make his way over to her.
“Sleep well?” he says casually as he drops into the opposite seat.
“I suppose,” she answered, eyes narrowing as she tried to guess his angle.
“Hmm” he muses. “You know I don’t remember the last time I caught you sleeping in. Quit the morning run?”
“It’s been a rough couple weeks. Probably the first good night of sleep I’ve got in a while. I guess I wanted to savor it. Plus I thought I’d have the weekend”
He nods, acquiescing.
“I’d kill to sleep like that” he begins, his eyes sparkling. “You get some sort of prescription?”
She rolls her eyes, refusing to give in to his accusation.
“Oh come on Prentiss, we all know you’ve got that doctor on speed dial.”
“My speed dial is unfortunately occupied by you people” she jibes, sparing a glance over to the other occupants of the plane who were doing a great job of examining an upside down case file. “I barely have the time to talk to anyone else, even if I wanted to.”
Morgan leaned back, tossing his hands in the air in surrender before returning to his book, keeping his smirk to a minimum.
“Alright Princess, I’ll let you keep your secrets. You just uh, might want to touch up your neckline”
He gestures to his own collar and she feels herself burn with embarrassment as she remembers the shoddy concealer job she performed in her rear view mirror upon noticing some not so professional bruises sneaking their way up past the neckline of the shirt she had already deemed the most conservative of her go-bag.
She hears JJ snort as she snatches the book Morgan had been reading and hits his shoulder with a whack, prompting him to burst into victorious laughter as she grabs her makeup bag with a fierce glare.
By the time she comes back from the bathroom, Morgan has prepared the case file for the brief.
Back to business as usual.
She tries not to let thoughts of Aaron Hotchner M.D. cloud her head while she works, although it's hard when Morgan and JJ keep giggling to themselves every time an officer discusses something vaguely related to the local doctor's office. It becomes doubly difficult when she finally has a chance to check her phone notifications.
Dr. Hotchner: Hey. I know you’re probably busy, but I just wanted to check in and make sure your flight landed ok. Call me if you get a chance.
She lets out a smile and curses JJ’s observation skills as she notices the blonde lean over and tap Morgan on the shoulder before whispering something in his ear. He looks up at her and shakes his head with a teasing laugh. She flips them both off and walks out into the hallway, pushing past various deputies and secretaries until she finally finds a quiet enough corner to call.
I swear it's like working with a pack of high school girls.
He picks up on the third ring, and she can hear the sounds of some sort of children's TV show playing in the background.
“Hey, how are you?”
“I’m good. Doing good.”
“Good. How’s the other Washington?”
“Well from what I’ve seen of it, there’s trees, mountains, trees, and serial killers. Did I mention the trees?”
He laughs gently and she can feel the tension easing its way out of her shoulders.
“How’s Jack?”
“He’s good. We’ve been on a Thomas the Train kick recently, so he's very busy covering my living room in tracks.”
“I’m sure his engineering is remarkable.”
“Oh he’s a prodigy for sure. You should see the bridge he built over Mount Pillow. Practically flawless.”
It was her turn to laugh as she allowed herself to forget the trials of her day job and imagine the Hotchner living room as if she was there.
“How’s work?”
“It’s work” she states plainly, because it's true.
It’s a case not at all different from the ones she’s seen before. Although this one takes the cake for most interesting body dump, as their unsub had decided on stringing corpses up into trees like pinatas.
For many it would be considered a harrowing experience to have to deal with the process of disentangling limbs from branches, however for Emily, a day where she wasn’t frantically trying to identify her team's whereabouts or shoot her way through a suspect was a pleasant one.
Work was work.
“Do the crazy people have knives this time?”
“Hmm?”
“Never mind” he chuckles, and she feels like she’s missed out on some sort of inside joke.
She hears the TV fade as she assumes he walks into another room. She imagines him in his kitchen, how he’d look padding around in a sunbeam preparing morning coffee. It’s her own mind that betrays her when a version of herself wrapped snugly in a bathrobe cups a mug in her hands and stands smiling across from him.
It’s a domestic bliss she’s promised herself never to yearn for.
She allows herself the briefest indulgence.
“Hey, I think we should be able to wrap this case up in the next few days, if you want to grab dinner.”
“I’d like that. I’ll have to check my schedule to make sure I don’t have work, or need to take care of Jack”
“Of course. I don’t even know when we’d get back, it's just… I’d like to, you know. See you. Again.”
Talk about high school girls. You’re not asking him to prom, it’s just dinner. And he's already seen you naked.
“I’d like to see you too. Again.”
She can feel him smile through the phone and she can’t help but dawn a matching grin.
“Good. Good. Well I need to get back to the team, we’re meeting in 5 to go over the profile”
“Sure, I’ll need to get started on dinner. Send me a text when you get to your hotel room.”
“Will do.”
“Talk to you later”
“Bye”
She hangs up the phone and tries to compose herself, knowing if she walked back into their conference room with the look she was currently sporting JJ might actually explode.
It takes her two minutes to stop grinning.
They close the case in two days.
She spent that first night at the hotel combing through a suspect list Garcia had pooled for them, intent on focusing her energy not towards her own relationships, but toward her job.
This case was important, as they always are, and her urgency to catch this killer was not at all tied with her desperate desire to make it home before a certain doctor had three days of night shift in a row making him unable to commit to any dinner plans in the immediate future.
When they caught their man and slapped the handcuffs on him, she would have denied all accusations of checking her watch, and if by any chance someone had happened to see her do so, it would have only been to appropriately document the time of the arrest.
Which is what she told JJ as she cast a suspicious glance at her from across the interrogation room while Rossi hauled the man back to the cells in the precinct to be booked.
Unlike Morgan, with his rather brazen sibling-like teasing, JJ’s approach was always to hold back. JJ was patient. She would cast just enough raised eyebrows and soft smirks so that Emily knew she knew exactly what was going on, she was just waiting for Emily to tell her herself.
She knew Emily couldn’t keep a secret for too long, especially from her.
So when they boarded the plane, JJ didn’t ask any questions. Just sat across from Emily in a seat not unusual for her, and hummed innocently as she thumbed through a novel.
It could have qualified as torture.
Emily could practically feel the woman’s stare as she gazed out the window, desperately avoiding eye contact in an attempt to defend herself from what she quickly realized was becoming inevitable.
JJ was patient, but she really didn’t have to be. She just needed to wait for Emily to break.
And that never took more than 10 minutes.
“Are you going to do this the whole time?”
JJ looked up, with that curious doe eyed look that implied she knew nothing about why Emily was suddenly glaring at her with a look that could curdle milk.
“Do what?”
“Every time I look at my phone I can feel you staring.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-”
“Oh come on Jayje, we both know how this ends.”
JJ smiled, knowing she had her hooked. Emily, to her benefit, figured a quick surrender was better than the long and painful death of any remaining mystery her private life may have had.
“If you ask I’ll tell you.”
And there it was.
As much as she had dreaded the interrogation, it feels nice to gossip again. She can’t help but smile as she regales JJ with the tales of her not-so-secret sex life, feeling very regular as her best friend asks her to spill all the juicy details. It’s been a while since she was able to tell a story that didn’t end with someone getting shot.
Once JJ is satisfied, the girls both fall into a comfortable silence, and as Emily checks her phone she notices two notifications that had popped up unnoticed during their conversation.
"Speak of the devil," Emily mutters, and JJ wiggles her eyebrows in anticipation as Emily opens the text.
Dr. Hotchner: What time are you getting back tonight?
Dr. Hotchner: You should come over.
Two days to catch a serial killer put them back on the tarmac of Washington National Airport at 7:42 on a Tuesday night. That puts her in her office completing post-case paperwork until 11.
Which puts her in Aaron Hotchner's driveway before midnight, which, in the opinion of one Jennifer Jereau, was not at all too late for a doctor's visit.

Some love stories are beautiful. Some are cautionary tales. For a handful of people, they are both.
A young Hotchniss AU that spans from the summer of 1990 to Season 4.
It happens the summer that Aaron is assigned to a security detail for an Ambassador in DC. It is the summer where Paul McCartney plays in the RFK Stadium, where chainmail and checked skirts are everywhere and where temperatures soar far beyond anything previously recorded. It is a summer of heat and change, where the world feels shiny and new.
More importantly than any of this, however, is the fact that it is the summer that Aaron Hotchner meets Emily Prentiss.
It’s here!!! Thank you for all of the support and interest - hopefully you enjoy it 🤍

Summary: Jack is sick, Emily and Hotch take care of him...
Word Count: 1,5 k
Rating: General
Read on Ao3 or below...
Hotch woke up to the sound of a whimper. It was distant, but his eyes opened at full force – I guess a father always knows. He got up and noticed the other side of the bed was empty. Not good.
He found Emily sitting on the floor in his son’s bedroom, running her hand through Jack's hair, trying to soothe the little boy, whose eyes were red and puffy, full of tears.
"What happened?" Hotch asked concerned.
"I didn't wanna wake you, but I don't know what's wrong. I'm sorry, Aaron."
Emily sounded disappointed at herself, which made Hotch's insides twist.
"Nothing to apologize for, Em." He said and squeezed her hand before kneeling down. "Hey, buddy. What hurts?"
"Everything, daddy."
"I checked for a fever, but he seems fine and I just can't figure out what's wrong."
"Em, it's fine. Kids get sick."
Jack threw up once. Then twice. By the third time, Emily and Hotch moved to the bathroom, taking pillows with them and settling on the floor. After a couple more throw-ups and coughs Jack pretty much passed out, his forehead starting to feel a little feverish.
"We should move him to bed" Hotch whispered looking down at sleeping Jack, curled up like a ball on Emily's lap.
"Nah, it's fine. Plus it's almost 7 anyways.
It suddenly hit him and he stopped for a moment.
"It's the first time."
"What?"
"It's the first time he's been sick ever since..." Hotch trailed off and Emily's mouth formed an oh of understanding.
"Since Haley passed." She added quietly.
And, at that moment, Hotch realized he had never taken care of sick Jack. At least not by himself. He did have Emily with him, but she was mostly following his lead, which he used to do with Haley.
They forgot to text Jessica and tell her not to come, which they only remembered when she knocked on the door.
"I can stay with him." She offered sincerely.
"We wouldn't do this to you." Emily said worriedly. "I'm just sorry we didn't text you earlier."
"Emily, really, you guys should go to work."
"How can we leave with him being sick like that? Emily asked, her heart broken.
As if on cue, both Hotch and Emily's phones started ringing and that was the answer: they were going to work. They kissed Jack goodbye and got ready to leave, Emily making Jessica promise to call if he got any worse and Hotch making sure she had a list of numbers to try and reach him if necessary.
When they sat in the car, exhaustion finally sunk and made them realize how tired they actually were.
"The whole not sleeping thing doesn't get better with age." Emily said after a big yawn.
"Yeah, wouldn't recommend it."
"How did we do it as teens?"
"We?" Hotch asked intrigued.
"Fine. How did I manage?"
"And with your liver still intact." He said jokingly.
"Hey"
"Sorry."
They went quiet for a while, comfortable silence hanging around when Hotch started glancing in Emily's direction, a frown forming on his face.
"Em, are you sure you're just tired?"
"I'll be better after a cup of coffee, don't worry." Emily answered, half asleep.
Hotch nodded and continued driving, the car going back to silence.
When they arrived in Quantico, Emily had coffee. Three cups actually. But she still wasn't feeling better.
“Do you wanna stay, maybe go back home to say with Jessica and Jack?” Hotch asked worriedly.
“No. It’s just a headache. We stayed up pretty much all night with Jack and had to leave with him sick. I’m worried. When we jump into the case, I’m sure I’ll focus and feel better.” Emily said trying to reassure both her and Hotch.
“Okay. I’m going to my office to grab some files and I’ll meet you back at the presentation with the others.” Hotch said and Emily nodded her agreement.
As he went up to his office, she hovered around the kitchen thinking about getting a fourth cup of coffee but decided against it and just grabbed a bottle of water before reaching her desk.
"You look awful." Reid said when he saw Emily.
"Gee, thanks.” She said sarcastically.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude." He said apologetically.
"I know you didn't.” Emily said sincerely and paused, suddenly the whole room was spinning in front of her. “I'm not feeling so well, actually."
"Hey, Hotch!" Reid called out from the bullpen, quickly catching Emily before she fell to the floor.
Hotch rushed down the stairs and carried Emily back to his couch.
"Do you need something?" Reid asked following behind.
"Ask JJ to start the presentation. I'll join when I can."
He nodded his agreement and repassed the information to JJ, who promptly gathered the team, promising to update everyone on Emily and the case and headed to the conference room – not before peaking in Hotch's office.
"Hotch." The blonde called out gently.
"We were up all night." He started explaining without taking his eyes off Emily. "Jack's sick. I guess she is just tired and stressed out."
"The case is local. We'll head out without you.'
"Thanks, JJ."
"Sure. Just take care of Emily."
Emily woke up just moments later, sweating like a teapot and aching everywhere. Before Hotch could say anything, she motioned for the bin and he handed it to her just in time.
"How romantic." Emily said after throwing up what felt like every single thing she had ever eaten in her entire life.
"Oh definitely. I feel closer to you now because I saw you inside and out."
"Thanks a lot. How long have I been out?
"Not long. The team is still here."
“We should go too. Just grab me my water and we can meet everybody.”
“No way. I’m taking you to the doctor.” Hotch said, incredulous at his girlfriend’s words.
“Aaron, honey, I’m fine. Seriously. It was just a little thing.” Emily peaked outside and saw the team walking out of the bullpen. She immediately got up to follow, but her body wouldn’t agree. She sat back down and threw up one more time. “Okay, maybe I could go to the doctor.”
Before Hotch could answer, JJ was back. “Maybe you’re pregnant, Em.”
“Jayje!” Emily warned, but she wouldn’t really be that upset if that was the case.
“Hotch, I’m guessing you guys aren’t coming.” JJ said.
“Definitely not. I’m going to check on Jack, but I think I have to take both of them to the doctor.”
“Better safe than sorry. I’ll tell Rossi he is in charge. I’m sure he’ll just love it. If you need anything, call me. okay? I mean it.”
“Thanks, JJ.” Hotch said and waved goodbye.
Hotch and Emily texted Jessica and they all met at the doctor’s office. Hotch thanked his sister-in-law one more time for all the trouble and sent her home with a promise of calling as soon as he had a diagnosis.
Jack had stopped throwing up, but he was still feeling weak from the night before and he was reluctant to eat during the morning, afraid of getting sick again. Emily hadn’t had any real food yet, but at least she hadn’t had any fever. The doctor examined both of them and immediately told Hotch and Emily to be calm, the diagnosis wasn’t worrisome.
The doctor ordered IV fluids for Jack and Emily and asked the nurse to put them in beds before explaining what was wrong.
"Gastro what?" Emily asked, her eyes still closed, despite her efforts to seem alert.
"Gastroenterites."
"Is it serious?"
"Not if we treat it, which is easy." The doctor answered calmly, which was a little bit annoying to Emily.
"How come Aaron didn't feel anything?"
"Well, there are many possible causes for the problem. Do you eat the same things?"
"As if" Emily said and scoffed. "He only eats rabbit food."
"Your son takes after you I imagine?" The doctor asked Emily.
"Don't answer with pride." Hotch said and rolled his eyes. "I keep telling her the raw stakes are gonna kill her. And, of course, she is taking Jack as well."
"We'll go down happily. Right, buddy?" Emily said and immediately got a high five from Jack.
"Don't encourage him, Em!" Hotch said exasperated and turned back to the doctor. "I apologize. Is there a prescription?"
“It’s probably just a tummy bug, so I’m giving you guys a prescription for some fluids. Drink lots of water and go easy on heavy foods for the next few days.” The doctor handed Hotch the prescription and chuckled. “Don’t worry, they’ll be fine.”
They waited around until the fluids were over and finally left the hospital. Emily and Jack were already feeling better, especially Jack, who asked what they were gonna eat for dinner. The three of them drove home and, after a very light meal prepared by Hotch, they all finally went to bed.
"Aaron?" Emily asked when he snuggled closer to her.
"Yeah?"
"You're a great dad."
"You think so?"
"I know so. Also, I'm sure Haley would agree."
Hotch smiled tenderly at Emily and pulled her into his arms, where he wished she would stay forever.

Countdown
Rated: T Warnings: n/a Pairing: Aaron Hotchner x Emily Prentiss Word Count: 2.7k Read on Ao3
Rossi throws a New Year’s Eve party, and Aaron spends his night trying to avoid the one person he can’t stop staring at.
~~
Aaron stood at the makeshift bar just off the kitchen and twisted open the top button of his shirt, hoping to relieve the restlessness that had been prickling under his skin ever since he stepped inside the house.
He blamed Dave. His supposed friend, with his penchant for top-shelf liquor, imported cigars, and extravagant gatherings, who insisted that New Year’s Eve was an occasion to be celebrated amongst friends.
Or maybe he would turn his blame on Corbin Jefferson of Lexington, Kentucky. A repulsive man who managed to pull the team away from their families and holiday festivities with his murderous antics, evaded their presence for a week, only to let himself get captured with just enough time for the team to return for Rossi’s party.
Aaron could provide anyone who bothered to ask a list of reasons why this day, this party, was the source of his cynicism. For one, a general disdain for occasions whose existence was predicated on drinking yourself into a massive hangover, especially to commemorate something as mundane as changing numbers on a calendar. Or perhaps, the chronic disappointment that always seemed to follow this night, optimism and high expectations that were never really satisfied. He might have even mentioned a particularly traumatic breakup that took place in Molly Griffin’s basement in tenth grade when, upon searching for his then-girlfriend a few minutes before their midnight kiss, he found her lip-locked in a closet with senior Blake Thomas.
This list, noticeably, would neglect to include the main reason for his uneasiness this evening. That reason was currently leaning against the kitchen island, dressed in an indecently attractive black dress, and smiling at the waiter who refilled her champagne.
The sight of her faint alcohol-induced flush and the lock of hair that fell against the back of her neck, having slipped out of her carefully crafted chignon, was enough to make Aaron toss back the last of his first allotted drink of the night and slip into the living room.
Despite his reticence, even Aaron could admit that his friend had managed to pull together a sufficiently impressive celebration. A handful of waitstaff bustled around the house, ensuring guests were plied with generous amounts of food and alcohol. Heaters were strategically placed on the back porch so they could enjoy their cigars despite the December chill. The children ran around with party hats and noisemakers, allowed to stay up past their bedtimes just this once.
He was watching Jack and Henry debate Reid on the scientific potential and accuracy of the Jurassic Park movies when he found himself flanked on either side by JJ and Dave.
“Having fun?” Dave handed him a refreshed glass.
Aaron tipped it in thanks. “You’ve always known how to throw a good party.”
Dave turned to JJ and smirked, “Notice how he never actually answers the question.”
“Don’t be such a grump, Hotch.” JJ jostled him with her elbow, chuckling. “It’s New Year’s Eve.”
“Exactly,” he replied dryly. Noticing she was curiously carrying a drink in each hand, he asked, “Is that for Will?”
“For Emily, actually.” She nodded towards the French doors leading out to the backyard, where they saw Emily standing by herself. Aaron sipped his drink, swallowing hard and feeling the burn of the whiskey move down his throat.
“But it’s almost midnight,” JJ continued, “and I do need to go find Will. Do you think you can bring this out to her?” She held out a glass of champagne.
The ask seemed innocent enough, though Aaron wondered why this whole encounter felt specifically contrived to make him as uncomfortable as possible. He looked at Dave, whose expression remained neutral, revealing nothing.
But neither of them could have known about the incident, and despite the fact that his chest suddenly felt painfully tight, he couldn’t find a reason to decline without appearing extraordinarily rude.
“Um, yes, of course.” He glanced at both of them again. “Excuse me.”
He weaved through the other guests in the room and paused just before he reached the back doors, taking a deep breath in an attempt to settle himself before he opened the doors to the one person who had been careful to avoid him all evening.
~~
The incident had occurred three weeks earlier.
Emily had taken to joining him on late nights in the office, an increased caseload forcing Aaron to stay in the office later and later. Sometimes she would divide the files, quietly working alongside him until they managed to clear the pile on his desk. Other nights, she simply kept him company for a few hours, raiding the alcohol from Rossi’s office and forcing Aaron to take breaks every so often.
He didn’t get nearly as much work completed on those nights, but he never really seemed to mind.
The storm came in unexpectedly that night. A torrential downpour that flooded the streets almost immediately, making it dangerous to drive home. Aaron made a call to Jessica to let her know he’d be staying at the office until the storm cleared and wished Jack good night over the phone.
She knocked on his door a few minutes later, after he had already settled down at his desk with an open file and an indulgent glass of scotch.
“Stuck here too?”
“Yes,” Aaron sighed. “I let Jessica know I likely won’t make it home tonight. Is anyone else still here?”
“No, they all made it out before the rain started.” Emily poured herself a glass, an established comfort in this space from so much time spent together, and dropped into the chair across from him.
He returned to his work with a nod, feeling her eyes on him as she silently sipped her drink.
Finally, she quipped, “Has anyone ever told you that you work too hard?”
He looked up at her, lifting a sardonic eyebrow, sure that she had repeated that exact sentence to him on numerous occasions. She laughed at his expression, and he couldn’t help but smile.
“Oh, all right,” she sighed and pulled a folder off the pile. “What’s on the docket?”
Aaron couldn’t say how much time had passed, only that the new bottle of scotch he had opened was now half empty, and both he and Emily had somehow found their way to the couch.
Case files remained open and forgotten on his desk. She had kicked off her shoes, her legs tucked underneath her with her elbow resting on the back of the couch. His jacket and tie were hanging off the back of a chair, his legs propped up on the coffee table and his head tipped back against the cushion.
Emily was telling him a story about her youthful misadventures, and he had turned towards her, smiling softly as he watched her become more and more animated in her narration.
The alcohol made him notice things he was normally very good at not noticing. The way her eyes widened and sparkled when she got excited. The curve of her body, pliant and soft as it molded into the cushions. The scent of her, vanilla and cedar and something else he couldn’t name but was undoubtedly Emily. The way she gestured with her hands when she spoke, which made him inexplicably want to grab onto one and press his lips against her wrist.
“— and that’s the first and last time I agreed to a threesome.”
Aaron blinked, realizing he hadn’t heard the last few minutes of Emily’s story, his eyes widening as he absorbed what she had just said.
She grinned, a peal of laughter escaping her lips. “You should see your face.” Aaron coughed, sitting up straight. “You zoned out there for a while; I was wondering when you’d notice.”
“Yes, um, sorry about that.” Looking down at his shoes, he brushed both palms against his knees. “So the, ah, threesome was…”
“A joke?” She laughed again. “Yes.”
He gave a hoarse chuckle, his mouth suddenly devoid of moisture.
A mild awkwardness hovered in the air; the only sound for a while was the rain beating relentlessly against the window.
“It doesn’t look like we’re getting any sleep tonight,” he finally murmured.
Two beats passed, then, “There’s always the couch.”
They looked at each other, the fact of there being a single couch unspoken yet suddenly frighteningly tangible, and it felt as if all the air had been lost from the room.
The sudden thundering of his heart matched the tempest outside. He watched her eyes drop down and back up to meet his. He heard his own intake of breath, felt his lips fall open just a bit. Their hands inched towards each other, fingertips grazing.
He bent; she leaned. And their lips were separated by less than an inch when a harsh clap of thunder startled them both.
Reality hit him like a bullet, and he jerked away.
“Hotch—”
“I’m going to, uh, go sleep in my car. You can— take the couch. Please. Make yourself comfortable.”
He rushed to grab his jacket, keys, phone, unable to meet her eyes.
“Hotch—”
“Good night, Emily.”
He fled to the elevator and down to the garage, grateful it was enclosed so the cold inside his car was tolerable. He fell into a discomfited sleep, aided by the alcohol still in his system, berating himself all the while for nearly crossing a line he had no business crossing. For rushing something he knew he wanted. But wanted the right way, the way she deserved.
The sun had just started to peek through the clear skies when he woke. When he trudged back upstairs, determined to speak with Emily, apologize and explain, he opened the door to his office and found it empty.
She arrived a few hours later, fresh-faced and joking with Derek as they walked out the elevator together. She paused in her steps when she saw him standing on the stairs, then politely wished him good morning and sat down at her desk.
They said nothing else, and she hadn’t knocked on his door since.
~~
Through the glass, Aaron watched Emily pull her wrap around her, arms tight against her middle, shielding her from the cold. She swayed lightly on her feet, her back turned to him, underneath the warmth of the heaters.
Behind him, their friends had gathered around the TV, watching the few remaining minutes of the New Year’s Eve special before the countdown to midnight started.
Aaron sucked in a breath and nudged the door open, letting it fall closed behind him. “Hi.” She turned at the sound.
White wisps of air escaped her lightly parted lips. The red of her lipstick had faded away over the course of the evening, just a hint of pink left behind. The cold had flushed the expanse of her cheeks down to the tip of her nose.
It devastated him, how beautiful she was.
Hesitation was evident on her face, but still, she gave him a small smile. “Hey.”
“JJ asked me to give you this.” She accepted the champagne flute with a thanks.
Silence lingered, both of them unsure and shifting on their feet. He despised it.
The lack of her company, her friendship, was an unexpected void. She’d sit across from him, a layer of their usual professionalism shed in the late hours of the evening, and he would listen to her rant about a case, or describe Reid and Morgan’s latest pranks, or tease him about overworking. He didn’t realize just how much he had come to want it, need it.
“Emily,” he began, haltingly, “I’m sorry. About— about that night. I shouldn’t have—”
“It’s okay—”
“It’s not. I overstepped—”
“You didn’t,” she shook her head, “And I’m sorry too.”
“No, you don’t need—”
“I do. We—” she waved her hand indiscriminately, and Aaron ducked his head, cheeks burning, “and now it’s been…”
“Weird,” they said together, and then they both smiled tentatively, and it felt like something had finally cracked open.
“So now we just…”
“Go back to normal?”
“Yes. Normal.” He exhaled, releasing a plume of white air, a curious mix of relief and disappointment settling into his stomach. “So should we head back inside? It’s almost midnight.”
“Lead the way.”
Aaron pressed down on the handle and pulled, only to find the door curiously locked. He rattled the handle, pushed and pulled again, with no luck.
“It’s locked,” he said lamely.
Emily placed her glass down on a nearby table and approached a window. She knocked and waved, attempting to gain the attention of their friends who seemed to be conspicuously avoiding the noises coming from the back of the room. “Shit.”
“What’s going on? Should we go through the front door?”
Emily slowly stepped back, wringing her hands. “This, um, might be my fault.”
“Your fault?” Aaron’s eyebrows wrinkled in confusion. “How?”
“The girls and I…we, um, went out. After the Lexington case,” Emily’s voice wavered, an uncommon thread of nerves laced through. “And I might have, uh, told them. About that night.”
Aaron was rooted where he stood, the pit in his stomach widening and swallowing him whole.
“And you know how they are!” she waved her hands, voice raising. “They kept joking that we just needed to be locked in a room together, and—” she abruptly cut herself off.
“Why would they—”
“It doesn’t matter,” Emily began to pace, two steps left, two steps right, the words tumbling faster out of her mouth. “Anyway this was probably their stupid plan, even though I told them nothing would happen because obviously, you weren’t interested in—”
“I was interested.” The words escaped and hung in the air before he could stop them.
She froze, eyes going wide. “What?”
Aaron swallowed past the stone sitting in his throat. “I…wanted to. That night. For a while, actually.”
“But you…you ran!”
“It just didn’t feel right, Emily.” His heartbeat thundered in his ears, and he couldn’t be sure that he wasn’t yelling at her. “I care about you, and you deserved more than a drunken night in my office. Especially when I didn’t know if you felt…”
“Do you think I spend my evenings doing paperwork for fun?” This, she shouted.
They stared at each other, chests rising and falling as they caught their breath. A loud cheer erupted from inside, the starting chant of the countdown to a new year.
10!
Emily took a step toward him.
9!
And said, “For a profiler, you are really oblivious.”
8!
Aaron’s heart thudded once, twice.
7!
He stepped forward, bridging the gap between them until their toes almost touched.
6!
With a shaky hand, he tucked a fallen strand of hair behind her ear, fingers grazing her cheek.
5!
Both of her hands came to rest on his chest.
4!
“Don’t run this time,” she whispered, amused and affectionate.
3!
He shook his head, the corner of his lips tugging up into a smile.
2!
Aaron’s hands framed her face, the warmth of his palms against the cool of her cheeks, as he bent down.
1! Happy New Year!
She tasted like champagne. Crisp fruitiness on the tongue that licked against his lips, teasing and goading. He shuddered in her embrace, tilting her face higher, drawing her closer to him. Her fingers tightened over the collar of his jacket, her wrap slipping off her elbows and onto the ground. They nipped and soothed and moved against each other with gentle intensity, his hands dropping down to her neck when he deepened the kiss for a fleeting moment before pulling away.
Her eyes stayed closed for a second longer before fluttering open. She smiled, languid and easy, as if she knew this was only the first of many kisses they would share. He supposed she was right.
“Happy New Year, Emily.” The tip of his nose nudged against hers.
“Happy New Year, Aaron.” And the weight that had been pressing on his chest for the last three weeks disappeared, and he could breathe again.
“You do realize,” she whispered, their lips so close they brushed against each other when she spoke, “I’m going to be hearing ‘we told you so’ for the rest of my life.”
“Worth it, I think.”
Her arms looped around his neck and his hands found her waist, and he was lost in her again, nearly missing the soft click of a door unlocked behind them.

Emily gets sick and Aaron is there to see her through it.
Read on AO3 or under the cut.
The sound of the office door opening was enough to pull her from the light slumber she had fallen into and, rolling over beneath the blanket on the couch, she gave Aaron a smile as he shut the door behind him with a steaming cup of tea with honey and lemon in his other hand. It only felt as though it had been ten minutes since he left her there, telling her to try to get some sleep with a kiss to her brow, but the fact that it was starting to get dark out and the bullpen was ten times quieter than it was when she fell asleep told her it had probably been a little longer than that. “I totally think I should win the award for best boyfriend.” He teased, making her smile as he approached the couch.
“Well, you do in my book,” She told him when he sat down next to her and handed her the huge mug once she was sitting up, the two of them sharing a look before she took a sip and hummed. Her throat was killing her, but the tea helped to sooth it and so she had been making him run back and forth to the kitchen since she got sick so he could make it for her. He made the best tea. Well, that was what she told him in order to get him to make it for her and it worked like a charm every time. “I wanna thank you for putting up with me for the past couple days,” She said when she leaned against the backrest of the couch and looked at him once again. “I bet I’m horrible to live with, aren’t I?”
“No worse than usual, honey, no.”
“Thanks.”
He chuckled and leaned in to give her a kiss on the forehead, rubbing her leg through the blanket as he drew back. “No, you actually haven’t been that bad,” He shook his head while watching her take another sip of tea. “I mean, it’s not like you get sick all the time either, so I suppose I can put up with your grouchiness for a couple more days if I have to. I’m just hoping we don’t get another case through because I really don’t want to have to leave you behind.”
“Babe, I have a cold, I’m not gonna drop dead if a case comes through and you can’t be here for a couple days,” She laughed before wincing at the pounding in her head. “Remember, I have Pen too. If I need anything, I know she’s at the other end of the phone and she’ll come help me out. I’m a big girl, you know, no need to be worried about me.”
“I like worrying about you though. If you haven’t noticed, I’m quite good at it.”
“Oh, believe me, I’ve noticed.”
“You gonna budge over or not? I have limited time until Strauss notices I’m gone.” He pointed out.
Rolling her eyes at him playfully, she moved over to create enough room for him to sit next to her properly and she let her head fall against his shoulder when he slipped an arm around her and buried his lips in her hair with a sigh. “How about we get you home soon, hmm?” He mumbled. “I’ll get takeout for dinner and we can just watch a movie.”
“Yeah, please, that sounds great,” She replied, nodding. “I think I should have stayed home today.”
“Well, maybe you’ll learn from this and actually listen to me the next time I tell you to do that three times.” He said.
She made a face. “Doesn’t sound like me.”
“You are so lucky I love you, Emily Prentiss, or I would have killed you long ago.” He muttered.
“I am lucky,” Her voice softened and she stretched up to brush her lips against his cheek. “The luckiest.”

no wedding, one funeral
Summary - It’s their wedding day. It’s supposed to be the happiest day of their life. Unfortunately her past finds out just in time to make sure it doesn’t happen.
word count - 2.7k
it’s short and it’s sad and i would say i’m sorry but we know it’s a lie. it also could have been a lot worse, but i’m easing myself back into summer 2021 mode and this is the best i could do lol. love u besties<3
The night before
He’s smirking at her as he leans against the door, watching as she grumbles to herself as she packs an overnight bag. She turns to face him with squinted eyes at his chuckle and he can’t help but smile at her.
“This is so stupid.” she says, zipping the bag up.
“Yet you’re doing it,” he comments with a grin and she throws the pillow at him, a sarcastic smile on her face as he jumps from it.
“Have you ever tried to say no to Penelope?” she asks, “it’s like kicking a puppy.”
“It’s just one night,” he says, walking to her and she turns to face him, “you heard her. It’s back luck for the bride and groom to be together the night before.” he smirks, trapping her into his arms by her waist and she smiles, hooking her arms behind his neck.
“Mhmm,” she hums, “what will you be doing with your last night of freedom?” she says, tilting her head and he laughs.
“That’s what it is, huh?” he asks with a smile, “you want one final night of unmarried bliss?”
“Of course,” she plays along, “marriage seems so boring.”
“Our marriage will be the most boring of them all.” he smirks, before kissing her softly, his heart still, even almost three years later, jumping at the feel of her smile.
“So boring.” she whispers, kissing him again.
She groans at the heavy knocks on the door, pulling away completely and grabbing her bag.
They can hear Jacks excited shouts as Penelope walks through the door, the two of them more excited about the upcoming wedding than the actual couple.
“Come on love birds!” Penelope shouts, “We have dinner reservations!”
“That’s my que.” Emily says, and he smiles, latching their hands together.
“See you tomorrow, Mrs Hotchner.” he smirks, and she chuckles before she kisses him, her hand on his cheek softly.
“See you tomorrow, Mr Prentiss.” she teases, tapping his cheek as she smirks at him.
“I can’t wait to be boring with you forever.” he whispers close to her lips, and she smiles, her eyes full of love.
“Me too.” she smiles.
“You have three seconds or I’m coming in! And I’ve seen it all with the two of you!” Penelope shouts, causing Aaron to cringe internally at the memory.
“I love you.” Emily says to him and he nods, kissing her just one last time.
“I love you too,” he smiles, “Now go.” he says, pushing her away playfully.
She laughs, walking backwards out of the door. He follows her out, stopping next to Jack as the little boy jumps excitedly on the couch.
“I’ll see you tomorrow buddy.” Emily smiles, ruffling his chair as he smiles up at her.
“Wedding day!” he shouts and the three adults laugh.
“Wedding day!” Penelope shouts. “This is so exciting.” she squeals, pushing Emily out of the door. He can still hear the blonde woman even after the door is shut and their half way down the steps of their porch. Jack waves at Emily from the window as they drive off, and once the car is gone he turns to his dad.
“Can I try my suit on again?” he grins, happiness beaming off him and Aaron laughs.
“Not today buddy,” he says, “but you can help by getting me the box from the table.” he says and Jack jumps down of the couch, runs into the kitchen and grabs it.
“What is it?” the boy asks.
“A present for Emily for tomorrow,” he smiles, “Do you want to grab the drawing you and Jess made for us?”
“Yes.” he says suspiciously, “but you’re not allowed to look until after tomorrow!” he shouts as he walks into his bedroom.
Aaron chuckles to himself as he heads into the master bedroom, smiling with complete happiness, eager for tomorrow and the rest of his life.
He smiles as he looks at the wedding bands, the two of them resting in the palm of his hand, and he can’t help the joy that beams in his heart knowing the bands will rest forever on their fingers, they’re future one he can not wait for.
He crumpled up the paper in his hands, smiling as he turned on his heels. He’d waited so long to find her, he just couldn’t believe he’d found her at the perfect moment.
Aaron doesn’t get chance to see her at all that morning, everyone rushing around as they prepare last minute things.
He doesn’t see her until she’s walking down the aisle. A smile on her face as she looks at him, and he could cry. Thinks he would cry if he wasn’t so captivated by how beautiful she looked. The long white dress fitting in all the right places.
She winks at Jack when she reaches the top, the little boy giggles as he tries (and fails) to wink back.
“You look beautiful.” Aaron whispers to her and she smiles.
“Are we all ready?” the man says and everyone takes their seat.
They don’t use their own vows, the two of them deciding they didn’t need them. That their love is their own, and that was enough.
He smiles as he says I Do, the love in his eyes almost blinding as he looks at her.
She opens her mouth to say the two simple, but important words when the doors swing open, and they look in that direction.
“Hey stranger,” the thick Irish accent says, his eyes on nothing and nobody except Emily, moving closer with every step, and when her hands drop from his hold, Aaron turns to her. “Didn’t anyone tell you it’s rude to marry a man while engaged to another?” he asks her.
There’s no time for her to speak, no time for anyone to even register what was happening, and by the time anyone even saw the gun they were too late, the bullet already flying towards her.
He fires the gun into his own head before anyone can grab him. Everything happening to quick for anything to be done about it.
It was already over before anyone realised it started.
Jack stands in shock, Emily’s blood covering his white shirt at the impact of the bullet. Morgan grabs him and follows the rest of the team towards the exit, Dave on the phone to 911 as he heads out, the place completely empty apart from Aaron, Emily, and the guy with the gun.
The guy no one apart from her recognises.
“You’re okay,” Aaron whispers to her, watching in agony as her white dress turns a heartbreaking shade of red. “Just stay with me. Just stay with me.” he says, running a hand over her cheek and into her hair. His mind is running wild about the man’s final comment before he shot, but there isn’t time for him to think about it. The woman he loves is bleeding to death in his arms on their wedding day.
“Aaron—” she tries, “I—” but she can’t, she’s in too much pain, she can’t really breathe and she’s so tired. But she has to tell him. He has to know.
“Shh,” he says with a smile, “tell me later.” he nods, tears falling down his cheeks but he smiles at her.
She swallows, tries to force herself to speak, to use her last bit of strength to tell him the truth, about Ian. The man now laying dead not four inches from her.
But it’s too late, blood pours out of her too quickly, there isn’t enough time, and she slips away, her final thoughts on how he’ll never know the truth, about how he’ll never have answers. He’ll never have a why. Her final hope is that he doesn’t go looking for one.
“Em?” he whispers as her eyes fall closed, tears running down her cheek. “Emily?” he says, shaking his head. He looks down at his hand, raw red with her blood and he can’t accept it.
“Emily, baby, wake up.” he pleads, his hand on her cheek. “please.” he cries, before dropping his head, pulling her body closer into his as he holds her for the final time.
It could have been hours, it could have been minutes, he doesn’t know. He doesn’t care. But suddenly Dave is leaning by his side, a sad look in his eyes as he places a hand on his shoulder.
“It’s time,” he whispers, “you have to let her go.”
“I—” Aaron tries but there’s nothing to say.
“I know,” the other man replies, slowly pulling him away from Emily. He can’t even look, he won’t, he can’t have this image of her in his brain.
Aaron slowly stands as he releases her body, watching as she is carefully picked up, and wheeled away from him, and he almost drops to the floor and screams when he releases he’ll never see her again. That this was it.
“Let’s go, okay?” Dave says gently, slowly walking the man out of the building. The red on his once white shirt screaming at him.
Jack screams and runs to him almost instantly, and Aaron snaps from his trance to pick him up, holding the crying boy in his arms.
“Is Emmy gone?” he whispers, the name he’d not used since he could say Emily falling from his mouth, the name laced with sadness and grief.
“Yeah,” Aaron answers quietly. “She’s gone, buddy.” he rubs a hand over the boys back, holding back his own tears as he comforts his son as best as he can.
Two mother figures dead.
One in the same house.
One right in front of him.
The team watch with their own tears as Dave and Jessica lead them out and into a car.
“Who was that?” JJ asks them as the dead man is wheeled in front of them.
“I have no idea.” Morgan says, “He seemed to know Emily though. And she knew him.”
“Engaged?” Penelope says to no one in particular, as she remembers the strangers words.
The team don’t move for a long while, far too many unanswered questions surrounding them.
They bury her on what would have been her and Aaron one month anniversary. It’s a hot day, the sun shining down on all of them as her coffin is lowered into the ground.
There are five people here who he doesn’t know. All stood off in the corner, and he wonders if they knew the man who shot her. If they know why she was killed. He wonders if they can give him the answers he needs.
He goes to them when everyone starts to separate, and all eyes go to the tall man who stands in the middle of them as Aaron gets closer.
“Im sorry,” Aaron says, “Did you know Emily?”
“We did. A long time ago.” The man says in a British accent, and it catches him by surprise. “Clyde.” he says, holding his hand out.
“Aaron.” he says, taking it, his eyes looking at him with suspicion.
“How did you know her?” he questions, and their eyes dart to the floor.
“It was a long time ago,” he says, “we were just here to pay our respects.”
“Did you know the man who killed her?” he asks, “Do you know why she was killed? Shot. On our wedding day?”
“Aaron,” Clyde says sadly, “I’m really sorry for your loss. But we were just old friends.” he lies, and the lie tastes bitter on his tongue. But he has no choice. It’s classified, even though Ian is dead, his organisation is not. And then can not risk anymore lives.
“The man who killed her,” Aaron starts, not believing a word out of Clydes mouth. “He mentioned that they were engaged.. but Emily never mentioned anything about that. Never even talked about a serious relationship. She would have told me if she was engaged once, unless there was a reason she couldn’t.” he says, and Clyde swallows.
“Aaron,” the woman says, and he looks at her. “Emily meant a lot to all of us, and if we could give you the answers you wanted, we would. But we can’t. She is—” she stops, taking a shaky breath before continuing. “She was so important to me. To all of us. But there isn’t an answer here. Not with us.” she lies.
Aaron remains silent, holding back his own tears as he inhales.
“I’ve never heard a thing about either of you.” he tells them, “she never said a word about any of you. Couldn’t have been that important.” he says and he knows it’s rude, knows he’ll feel bad about it when all this is over but right now he’s angry, he’s heartbroken and he’s confused. And the group in front of him are lying to his face. So he simply walks off, heads back to his team and they all head to the wake.
“We should have told him.” Tsia says, “Ian’s dead. We’re not in danger.”
“When I get proof he didn’t assign someone else to hunt us down, I’ll tell him all he needs to know. But right now, its safer to keep it classified.” Clyde says, as they watch the grieving family drive away.
Dave sits next to Aaron as he stares at his glass. He doesn’t speak, allows Aaron to start the conversation.
“She had a whole secret life.” he starts, “five random people at her funeral, and they knew her, a random man comes to our wedding and shoots her after talking about being engaged—”
“Maybe she had a bad relationship before she moved here—”
“If it was that, she would have told me about it by now. I know that.” he says, shaking his head. “It’s more than that…” he trails off.
“You need to grieve. You need to get through this. And Jack. And then when you’re ready, I’ll help you do whatever it is you need to do—”
“I need answers.” he interrupts. “I need to know why the woman I love is dead.”
“Sometimes the answers don’t help.” he says gently. “Sometimes it better to accept it. To grieve, to move on.”
“A random man walked into our wedding and killed her. A group of strangers who talked about how Emily was important to them showed up at her funeral.” he says, looking at Dave. “She died… She was killed because of something, because of…” he stops, releasing a shaky breath, “I don’t need to accept it, Dave. I need to understand it.”
“And I’ll help. We all will.” he tells him. “But right now we all need to grieve.”
Aaron nods, taking a sip of his drink as Jack walks over, the sadness on his face enough to make him sick.
“I miss Emily.” he whispers as he climbs into his dads arms, and Aaron wraps them around him.
“Me too,” he whispers.
He sits on their (his now, he supposes) bed. His opening hand holding the two rings that feel heavier now than they ever had before, the two rings holding a future in them that they will never have.
He thinks back to how hard she tried to tell him something in his final moments, he wonders what it would have been.
A secret life?
A bad past relationship?
He can’t help but think back to the man’s final words, engaged running around in circles in his mind.
Who was he? Was she really engaged? How long ago was this?
He lays down, staring at the ceiling as tears roll down his cheek, the scent of her overwhelming as his head rests in her pillow.
He falls asleep wondering if he ever even knew her at all, or if everything they had together was a lie.

hello lovely people🫶🏼 i am now sharing a snippet of a fic i am currently writing, so that i feel pressured to continue writing and will actually finish it 🫣 (below the cut!)
“I, uh, I am planning on proposing to Emily an-“
“Oh, finally,” Jack interrupts, a tinge of exasperation in his voice, “It’s literally been years, dad! Uncle Dave and I were wondering how long it’d still take you..” He mumbles the final part.
Actually, it is the entirety of the team that wonders when Aaron will finally pop the question, their love and affection for the other so clear, it seems like a crime she hasn’t got a ring yet.

Tumblr media
“Okay but you’ve been on the app right?” You asked Aaron after sitting down at his desk filled to the brim with paperwork that needed to be completed but never had the time to do. He peaked his eyes over to you once you sat down with a huff.
Amusement danced in his gaze as a small smiled played on his lips at your overt casualness with him. It was remarkable to witness you go from the scared and timid profiler hired right out of school to chatting his ear off at lunch every day in a matter of mere months. See, he was in his third year at the BAU and thought he had figured it out. That was until you came along and rocked his world.
He used to come to work, get some paperwork done, put his head down and go home after a long day. It worked for him. He was ‘friends’ with his coworkers as best as he could be, but he was the young pup of the group. Then you were onboarded. Gideon hired you the second you graduated after blowing him away in one of the classes he taught at Georgetown. You came in like a hurricane that he wasn’t quite ready for but knew the team needed.
You were so different than Aaron’s other coworkers. You actually talked to him and got to know him. You weren’t afraid of his intimidating gaze but instead found it a fun challenge to try and get him to break his facade. It annoyed him at first. He went to work to work, not socialize. But leave it to you to sway his opinion on the matter. Aaron didn’t want to admit just how much he had grown to love and adore your smiling face greeting him every morning. He really didn’t want to admit how much he looked forward to your early morning coffee chats or daily debriefs when Gideon was being a hard ass. You were the sunshine of the group. The one that brought the optimism while the rest of the team turned terribly pessimistic.
He'll never forget the first time you caught a killer. He almost had a heart attack when you quite literally jumped on top of the man, surprising him and taking him to the floor without a second thought. You smiled right up to him after he was in cuffs and whispered a, “One down. A hundred more to go.” To him. He knew right then and there that you’d be in his life for a long time.
“What app?” He set the pen he was writing with down as he turned his attention to you.
Sighing you opened your phone showing him, “Don’t play dumb with me Hotchner.” Your eyes glowered at the man with a subtle smirk resting right on his face, “Tik-Tok.”
He leaned back watching the videos you’d saved. He assumed they were ones you thought would convince him to download it. He was right of course. You’d saved the funniest ones in hopes he’d download the damn app. You’ve been trying for weeks to get him to do it. But then again, it almost took you three entire months to convince the man he needed to upgrade from his prehistoric iPhone 5.
“You know that’s likely spyware and the government…”
You cut him off with another long-drawn-out sigh, “Okay dad. But it’d not banned. So, download it.”
Aaron could mess with you, and he knew it. And enjoyed it. He didn’t dare want to admit just how happy he got when he got you to blush under his gaze. You’d quite literally waltzed in and rocked his absolute world. He knew he couldn’t catch feelings for you and yet here he was. On the brink of falling in love with the funnier than ever coworker who knew him better than he knew himself. How cliché.
He leaned back in his office chair crossing his arms over his chest, “You know. I don’t think I will.” He watched your face closely. You were far too easy to read. Something he was working on with you. You gave away everything on your face. His smirk only grew when you raised your eyebrows in slight surprise. It wasn’t often he didn’t bend over backwards to make you happy. He would of course download the stupid little app to make you happy. Just like he got the latest iPhone once you saw the horrifying state of his almost 10-year-old phone.
You leaned back in the same manner he had, “No need to be so obstinate Hotch.” Giving him a playful push, you couldn’t help but to giggle at his amused grin. It was easy to forget the two of you were at work of all places. It was just so easy to forget with him. He made you want more with him, so much more. A much easier case to crack than you originally thought. He was an utter softy under the rigid exterior put on for the team.
He knew he should get back to work but he just couldn’t shoo you away. He looked forward to moments like these. Little moments where he got to steal some of your time and attention, “Look at you. Using your big words.” His smirk deepened as he watched you register his words in real time. He was playing around with you. He’d gotten so comfortable with you he was beginning to mess with you right back. You’d grown used to teasing him and only getting an eyeroll or snicker in return. You weren’t used to this. And you had to admit you loved it. A subtle change you’d grown to adore.
“Didn’t go to school for nothing.” You winked at him knowing the double negative would set him off.
He shook his head, “You’re something else, you know that?”
Wiggling your eyebrows at him you nodded your head, “You wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Relenting, he fished his phone out of his pocket. He opened it up knowing damn well he didn’t download the app but he’d sure as hell let you do it. He’d truly do anything for you, “You’re right.”
Ignoring the flush that rose to your cheeks you grabbed the opened phone from his hands. You knew you shouldn’t be having these thoughts for your dangerously attractive slightly older and much more put together coworker. But damn. You had all the thoughts and feelings.
You sighed, “Just as I suspected.” Shaking your head in disapproval you handed the phone back to him, “Now, I need you to make an account to night. Let me know when you do! I have so many to share with you.” You grinned knowing he was going to give in one way or another.
He took it back, “That’s a lot of work.” He spoke with a grin that meant he was just teasing you. Two could play that game.
“Yeah, because you’re so anti-technology. But I promise you can do this. Who else am I supposed to send TikTok’s too?” You widened your eyes as if it was the most obvious thing ever.
“You’re other friends?”
You shrugged, “I do send them. But these are for you.”
Aaron couldn’t help but to smile at your ever so quick comebacks. One of the many reasons he had fallen for you so quickly, “I’ll do it. But…” He paused letting it linger in the air for a moment.
“But what Hotchner?” You raised your eyebrows, ever so curious as to what his stipulation could be.
His smile widened seeing your impatience for him grow, “Only if you come over and show me how.” He’d never really been so bold before. Sure, you’d been over to his place a few times in passing, once for a team dinner. Gideon’s genius idea to have somebody from the team host once a month. You’d rather come to enjoy the gatherings. Especially when they were at Rossi’s place. The wine and food pairings never ceased to amaze you. You on the other hand always insisted on taking the team out when your month rolled around. It was a little too embarrassing to have the entire team over at your rather small one-bedroom apartment.
“Propositioning me now Hotch?” You challenged back to the man you were head over heels with knowing it’d throw him off his game. The smile that immediately dropped let you know you did exactly that.
This time it was his mouth that dropped as his cheeks turned an adorable violet. Oh, you got him this time. You wished you could take a picture. He was just too cute when he thought too hard. If you were at home you would’ve risked a picture, but you didn’t want to cross the line at work. You’d never dream of putting him in an awkward position here. The both of you worked way too hard to blow it up now.
“You know I would never ever…” He started rambling. It would’ve been adorable had he not been actually freaking out a little bit. Of course, you knew that. You really were just messing with him.
Shaking your head, you stopped him, “I’m teasing you Aaron. I’d love to come over and show you how to make a TikTok account.”
He let out a strangled sigh of relief, “You’re killing me.” He loved it when you called him by his first name. It sounded too good coming out of your mouth.
Biting back a smile you stood from the chair, “I’ll be over at 6?”
You watched as he leaned forward grabbing his pen once more. Turning to you with that smile you’d grown to adore he nodded, “Don’t be late.”
“I wouldn’t dare Hotchner.” Shooting him one last wink you walked away briskly letting your heart get far, far away from the man who was causing it to beat right out of your chest.
Tumblr media
“You’re making this so much harder than it needs to be Hotchner.” You giggled itching to take the phone away from Aaron.
He shrugged giving you a wicked grin, “We’re not all technologically savvy Y/L/N.” He chided back knowing he might’ve been taking his time so that you didn’t have an excuse to leave. He took his time making dinner, not starting until you made it over. Taking his time cleaning up and getting dessert out. Pretending not to know how his phone worked. He wanted to steal your time away. Not that you minded, not in the slightest.
Rolling your eyes, you finished setting it up for him, “You could say that again.”
A small chuckle rolled off his lips. He put his phone back down before turning his head back to you. You were watching him with all the love in your eyes. You’d tried so hard to hide it, but it was becoming an impossible task. He was so easy to fall in love with. How were you to blame?
Feeling bold you decided to move forward with your plan. Picking up your phone you clicked the video player to record and angled it towards you and Aaron.
With scrunched brows he observed you, “What are you doing?”
“Since you’ve never opened the app you’ll never get it. But we’re doing a video. I’ll post it. It’d trending right now.” You said as nonchalantly as possible trying not to let your voice waver. You had to be confident
Curiously we watched as you scooted closer to him, “Trending?” He asked with a hint of amusement lacing his voice.
You nodded not daring to meet his curious gaze, you’d surely lose the confidence to actually do it, “Mhmm,” You hummed, “If you’ll let me that is.”
He grinned, “Be my guest.”
It felt like your heart was about to leap out of its chest. Now or never, really, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
He smirked seeing you finally look him in the eyes, “Do your worst then.”
It was really now or never. You grabbed either side of his face and decided to go for it.
His eyes widened in pleasant shock as you pressed your lips to his. He could’ve sworn his heart stopped then and there. That was bold, even for you. But then again you always had him on his toes. Another one of the many reasons he knew that made him fall for you. It took him a second to long to respond to this kiss. But once he did he wasn’t going to let you go.
Once you needed air though you did have to pull away. Adrenaline was now coursing through you as you realized you really just kissed not only your friend but your coworker as well. There was truly no going back now.
“Did you just…?” His mouth bobbed open and closed like he couldn’t believe what you just did.
You watched as his face went from shock to realization to… satisfaction? A fast and hot blush erupted on your cheeks as you realized he was watching you too, waiting on an answer to his very own question.
“I did.” Biting your lip, a wave of anxiety washed over you as you waited his answer.
You didn’t get one as he leaned in this time. You felt as his hand wrapped around the back of your neck and up through your hair. Carefully he pulled your head towards him as he kissed you with a little more dominance this time. He was in charge. He wanted to kiss you. You didn’t fight the way your body melted right into his. Feeling him smile as you folded into his touches like putty, you didn’t dare break away. You’d dreamed of this moment for far too long. Almost six months too long now.
He pulled away gently, leaning his forehead on yours, “Thank God you did.”
Your heart was hammering so hard in your chest you only could hope he couldn’t hear it being so close, “Yeah?” You asked, a hint of insecurity in your voice.
He moved away from you only so he could look you in the eyes. His hands landed on your shoulders giving them a gentle squeeze, “I’ve wanted to do that for a while now.” His usually unreadable face broke into a light blush, one you probably wouldn’t be able to see if you weren’t so close to him.
“Why didn’t you?” The smile on your face let him know it was all in good fun. You just loved teasing him. And he loved teasing you right on back.
He shook his head with the saddest smile, “Would it be too cowardly to say that I didn’t want to mess it all up? I didn’t want to make a mess of it if you didn’t feel the same.” For the first time you’d seen a side of him you’d really never have seen before. He wasn’t sure. He didn’t have an answer. He looked to you for the next step.
A quick shake of your head brought you back to the present, “I’d never think of you as a coward Aaron.” You reached for his hands that landed back down at his side, “And I’m certainly glad I didn’t make a mess of it.” You giggled feeling relieved that he clearly felt the same way. You didn’t think he’d kiss you like that if he didn’t.
“Go out with me tomorrow? On an actual date? Where I can actually woo you. You weren’t supposed to do that by the way.” He pinched your side lightly loving the way you squirmed under his touch, “But then again. You always seem to take me by surprise.” He clarified leaning back in wanting so desperately to kiss you once more but needing to hear your answer first.
“Do I now?” If your heart could speed up it certainly did as he leaned closer and closer once more.
“All the time.” He placed a gentle hand on your cheek, his thumb gingerly brushing on the apple of your cheek. A shiver you tried to stop erupted from your body at the lightest of contact with him. You were a goner, and you knew it.
“Good to know.” You grinned before leaning in and giving his nose a quick kiss, catching him off guard yet again, “And yes, I’d love to go out with you.” You continued after sending his brain into a tizzy. You truly would be the death of him.
He didn’t waste a second more before bringing you in for a much slower kiss this time. He too was in utter disbelief this was going on. Sure, he’d daydreamed about it on far too many occasions, but it was actually happening. He was kissing you.
When he pulled back for air he gave you a once over again, “I haven’t told you how pretty you look tonight.” He knew that’d draw that pretty blush he loved so much.
You pushed at his chest lightly giving him a soft laugh. You turned your head spotting the phone you’d set up to record about five minutes ago.
“Oh crap.” You pulled yourself off of him to grab at the phone quickly ending the video. A soft smile graced your face as you thought about watching that later.
He grinned, “Are you going to post that?”
Shaking your head quickly you saved the video before closing out of the app, “No, I don’t think I will.” Looking back up with all the love in your eyes you scooted closer to him, nearly on top of him now, “Think I’ll keep it just for you and I.”
He pulled you onto his lap, getting the hint, “You’re a sap.” Brushing your now messy hair, thanks to Aaron, out of your face he leaned down to give you a gentle kiss on your forehead, “A cute sap at that.”
You grinned while cuddling into him rather thankful your uncalculated risk paid off in an incredible way, “Only for you Aaron.”
He wrapped his arms all the way around pulling you in close, “Wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Tumblr media
It was late into the night, the third day on the the case when you heard a knock on your hotel room door. "Hey, um, sorry I'm coming to you so late"
You looked at him, surprised by the knock but curious. You opened the door, slightly nervous as to what he wanted at this hour. As the door opened, you saw him, looking down, already dressed in his pajamas. "What's up, boss?"
He looked up, his piercing gaze meeting yours. "I want you to come with me." He said, with a dominant tone that hinted at something more.
You followed him, wondering what was going on. As you entered the room, you saw that it was dimly lit, with a large king-size bed dominating the space. He closed the door behind him and locked it, leaning against the door as he took in your curious expression.
He hesitated for a moment, taking a deep breath. "I just...I need your help on something. We're on a case, and there are some things I can't quite figure out. I trust your eye for detail." He paused, taking another deep breath. "Can I trust you?"
“Of course," you replied without hesitation, already sensing the seriousness of the situation. You stepped back, inviting him into your room. He closed the door behind him, still looking uncertain. You moved towards him, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
You felt a mix of excitement and nervousness at the prospect of helping him with the case. You followed him into the room, where he handed you a stack of files. "I need you to make sense of this.
You walked him over to the table where you kept your notes and evidence from the case. You picked up a picture of a crime scene, pointing out certain details that had caught your eye. As you talked him through it, you noticed him growing more and more tense.
He looked at you, his gaze penetrating and serious. "I need your help to make sure things are done right. The team's safety is at stake. Can I trust you to help me?"
It's late, and I know we shouldn't be doing this, but I promise, it's important." He pulled you into a hug, his strong arms wrapping around you. You could feel the tension in his body begin to ease.
As he walked past you, his hand brushed against your lower back, a soft dominance that sent shivers down your spine. "Let's sit down," he suggested, guiding you to the couch.
As he moved across the room, he kept his eyes on you, studying your body language. He moved behind you, his hands reaching around to grasp your hips, pulling you close against him. He leaned in, his lips close to your ear. "I need you to focus on the details,"
“Sit down, I'll be right here," he instructed you, taking a seat on the edge of the bed. As you began to go through the files, you could feel his presence looming over you—a mix of soft dominance and anticipation that sent shivers down your spine.
"I see what you mean," he finally said after some time had passed. "This changes everything." He took a deep breath, his mind clearly racing with implications. Then, without warning, he rounded on you—not aggressively but firmly.
"Thank you", he murmured gratefully, his voice thick with emotion. You moved closer, pressing your body up against his, your hands sliding around his waist. You could feel the tension easing from his body, replaced by a warmth that spread between the two of you
You sat down beside him, feeling the warmth of his body as he leaned into you slightly. You opened up your laptop, ready to help him with whatever it was he needed. The case file appeared on the screen, and you began going through it carefully, pointing out details that caught your eye.
"Why didn't you bring this to my attention sooner?" His voice was calm but held an edge of frustration. Despite the tension in the air, you couldn't help but feel a strange mix of arousal and fear from his dominance.
“I need you to understand something," he said forcefully but quietly. "This is important. If we don't solve this case, people could get hurt." His eyes bored into yours, challenging you to meet him halfway.
Hotchner watched you intently, his gaze never leaving the screen as you navigated through the case file. The room felt charged with an electric energy, both from the intensity of the case and the closeness they shared.
You met his gaze steadily, swallowing hard. "I... I wanted to be certain before involving you," you admitted, trying to maintain your composure. "I didn't want to distract you from the other aspects of the case."
He pulled you closer, one hand sliding up your spine, fingers tangling in your hair. You reached up, wrapping your arms around his neck, pulling him closer. His lips met yours, and you moaned softly, feeling his desire for you.
"I know you're dedicated," he continued, "but we have to be smart about this too. We can't afford any mistakes." His voice was steady, unwavering—a testament to his leadership skills.
As you looked back into his eyes, you couldn't help but feel the weight of his words. His intense gaze seemed to penetrate deep into your soul, demanding honesty and commitment.
That's interesting," he murmured, leaning in closer to get a better look at what you had highlighted. You could feel his breath against your neck, sending shivers down your spine.
“I'm with you," you said finally, your voice barely above a whisper. "Whatever it takes."
“You're so fucking sexy", he whispered against your lips, his voice husky with desire. You nipped at his lower lip, and he groaned, deepening the kiss. His hands wandered over your body, teasing and exploring.
"I know you're working hard," he added, softening his tone slightly. "But we need to work smarter too. We can't afford to miss any more crucial details." His voice was low and steady, carrying an unspoken trust in your abilities.
you felt the heat burning between you, your bodies pressed together, aching for a release. Your hands moved to his belt, unbuckling it and sliding it off his hips. He gasped as your fingers encountered his semi erect cock, already leaking pre cum.
"You were right to be cautious," he acknowledged, taking a step closer to you. "But next time, don't keep something like this from me." He gave you a penetrating look, making you feel both small and impossibly vulnerable under his intense gaze.
As the kiss broke, you gasped for air, your heart racing. You looked up at him, your eyes locked on his. He leaned down, his lips brushing against your ear. "I want you so bad", he whispered, his warm breath sending shivers down your spine.
You returned his kisses with equal fervor, your hands exploring his body just as eagerly. You pushed him gently against the wall, pinning him there as you continued to kiss him passionately.
You couldn't find your voice, unable to look away from him as he loomed over you. His dominance was palpable, yet there was an undercurrent of something else—something deeper and more complex.
"I... I understand," you managed to say, your voice shaking slightly. You couldn't help but feel his dominance intensifying, making you both aroused and scared in equal measure.
You broke away from the kiss, trailing kisses along his neck and collarbone. Your breath hitched as his hands slipped under your shirt, tracing patterns on your bare skin. You pulled him closer, and he obeyed, pressing his body fully against yours.
You felt the heat between your legs intensify as he pushed you up against the wall, their bodies flush together. He teased your ear with soft kisses and whispers, "I need to see how much of a good girl you are."
His hand moved down to your thigh, gently pushing your panties aside. He took a step back, still holding onto your shirt, leaving you exposed and vulnerable. His eyes met yours, filled with lust and anticipation.
You arched into his touch, needy and eager for more. You bit your bottom lip, trying to control the whimpers that threatened to escape as he continued his teasing. "Yes, sir", you whispered back, feeling a thrill of anticipation and submission coursing through you.
You bit your bottom lip, trying to suppress a moan as he continued to watch you. You couldn't wait for him to take you; you wanted him inside you more than anything else in that moment.
You bit your lip, trying to maintain composure under his intense gaze. Taking a shaky breath, you nodded slightly, giving him permission to proceed. His fingers traced along your folds, teasing the sensitive skin before finally entering you.
You watched as he stepped closer, his fingers tracing along your sensitive folds. You arched into his touch, needing more. He smiled, his eyes darkening. "You're so wet for me," he whispered against your skin.
“Good girl", he praised, his voice rough with desire. He reached down, undoing your pants and pulling them off in one swift movement. He smirked at the sight of your wet pussy, his fingers tracing the outline of your sex through your panties.
“Come here, baby," he commanded softly. You obeyed without hesitation, moving closer to him until you were pressed against his hard length. He groaned softly, and his hands slid up your back, holding you tightly against him.
“So fucking wet for me", he growled lowly, his fingers moving in and out of you with a skillful rhythm. He leaned in, capturing your lips in a bruising kiss while his other hand gripped your ass, pulling you closer to him.
He pushed you down onto your knees, feeling his arousal against your back. His hands found the button of your jeans, and he unbuttoned them slowly, knowing it would drive you crazy with anticipation.
“I'm going to spank your pretty little ass now." His words were like a soft command, his dominant side showing through. You felt a mix of fear and excitement as he spanked your ass, each slap echoing through the room.
Despite the sting, you moaned, unable to hide your arousal. He smirked, knowing he had you right where he wanted you. "That's it, baby," he growled, his fingers finding their way inside you.
"I want to hear you moan, baby." He whispered, nipping at your collarbone. You moaned softly as he moved his hands under your skirt, sliding his fingers over your bare flesh.
As the spankings continued, you couldn't help but moan out his name. It felt both punishing and arousing. He pulled you back against his hard length, grinding his hips against your ass. "That's it,"
You bit your lower lip, trying to stifle your cries of pleasure as he began to thrust deeper into you. The head of his cock brushed against your sensitive entrance, teasing before finally pushing inside. He groaned, filling you up slowly.
He slid a finger inside you, watching your face as he slowly began to thrust. You moaned, rocking your hips back into his hand. "You like that, don't you?" he asked, his voice low and dirty.
he growled into your ear, "show me how much of a good girl you are." His fingers found their way back to your slick folds, teasingly rubbing against your clit. The sensations were overwhelming, and you couldn't hold back any longer.
You moaned as he touched you, pushing closer to his fingers. He gripped your thighs, lifting you up and onto the nearby desk. He spread your legs, exposing your moist pussy to his touch. "You're so fucking eager,"
Feel how much you turn me on." He groaned, nipping at your earlobe, sending shivers down your spine. You could feel him growing harder against your back, and it excited you even more.
"Please, do you", he said, pushing closer still, his cock rubbing teasingly against your panties. You moaned, reaching back to grip his shirt. "Say it," he purred, pressing his lips to your neck. "
You panted, your heart racing as he continued to tease. "I'm yours," you whispered, biting your lip. He growled low in his throat, a mix of desire and possession lacing his voice. "That's my good girl."
With one swift move, he lifted you up, wrapping your legs around his waist. His hands moved to your panties, sliding them down your legs as he stepped out of his own pants. Finally, he positioned himself at your entrance, his hard length pressing against your slick folds.
“Now, let me hear you beg for it." He purred, slipping a finger beneath your panties. You arched into his touch, moaning softly. "Please, Aaron..." you breathed.
You gasped, arching your back as he slipped his fingers under your silk panties, tracing patterns on your bare flesh. "I...need...your..." you murmured, barely able to get the words out between gasps.
"Your what, baby?" he asked, nipping gently at your earlobe. "Do you need me to touch you here?" he asked, his fingers brushing against your clit through your panties. You shuddered under his touch, your breathing ragged.
“Yes," you whimpered, your hips bucking against his hand. "Please, I need it." He chuckled softly, pulling away from your ear to look into your eyes. "You're such a good girl."
"Please," you cried, pushing against him. "Touch me." Aaron growled in approval, slipping his finger under the waistband of your panties and sliding them down your legs, freeing your throbbing clit from its confines
"Tell me," he urged, his voice low and demanding. "Tell me how much you need me." You whimpered, feeling your body tremble with anticipation. "Say it," he ordered, his fingers moving faster, teasing your sensitive nub.
With that, he slid his fingers deeper into your panties, finally touching your clit directly. You screamed out his name, your body bowing off the floor under the intensity of his touch.
He groaned lowly, his fingers finding your clit immediately. He started to massage it gently, circling his index and middle finger around the tiny bud. "Tell me if it's too much,"
"Tell me what you need," he whispered, his lips at your earlobe, his breath warm against your neck. You buried your fingers in his hair and arched against him, whimpering. "Fuck... I need... your cock..."
"I... I need you so much," you confessed, your voice barely above a whisper. His fingers stopped their teasing dance, instead pressing firmly against your clit. "Aaron," you moaned, arching into his touch. "Please, I can't take much more."
"I need you...to..," you moaned, arching into his touch. His other hand slid up your thigh, teasing the lace of your panties. "Please," you begged, your voice breaking.
Aaron felt you trembling beneath him, his fingers moving faster against your sensitive flesh. "Cum for me, baby," he whispered, his other hand moving to grip his cock firmly through his pants.
He reached between your legs and pulled your panties down, lifting your hips up so that he could access your pussy. His fingers sought out your clit, circling it gently at first, then more roughly, his free hand holding your waist to support you.
With a low growl, Aaron picked you up and pinned you against the wall, their hips grinding together. His other hand slid under your skirt, slipping your panties down your thighs and tossing them aside.
"Perfect," he purred, gripping the waist of your skirt firmly and sliding his finger across your slick entrance. You moaned, the noise a mixture of need and anticipation.
“So fucking tight," he groaned, thrusting his fingers deep inside you. You gasped at the intrusion, your walls gripping his fingers tightly. "You're mine," he growled, his mouth finding your neck once more.
"Aaron," you whispered, your voice trembling. He smiled, a predatory glint in his eyes. With one swift motion, he lifted your skirt and pushed your panties aside, leaving you exposed and vulnerable.
His fingers traced your entrance, teasing and prodding gently. "You're so wet for me," he whispered, his voice rough with desire. With one swift motion, he pushed past your folds, penetrating you deeply. You gasped, feeling him fill you completely.
His hips met yours in a rhythmic dance, their bodies slapping together with each deep thrust. His other hand found one of your breasts, massaging and pinching the nipple, sending shivers down your spine. "Feel how much you own me,"
His hips started to move, slowly at first, then picking up speed as he thrusts rhythmically inside of you. Every inch inside of you felt like heaven, and you found yourself meeting his thrusts with moans and gasps of pure pleasure.
“Fuck," he groaned, pulling back slowly before pushing back in again. You moaned, wrapping your legs around his waist, arching into his touch. His thrusts grew deeper, harder, each one sending waves of pleasure coursing through your body.
“Oh fuck," he growled, his hips moving in a punishing rhythm. You could feel him building inside you, the tip of his cock brushing against your sensitive walls.
Their bodies moved together in a primal dance, fueled by lust and need. His mouth found yours, claiming it roughly as his hips pistoned faster. You tasted his desire on his lips, mirroring the feelings coursing through your veins.
As he felt you nearing climax, he picked up the pace, his thrusts becoming almost violent. Your nails dug into his shoulders, your moans turning into pleasured cries. Finally, he felt the telltale tremors within you, signaling your orgasm.
“Fuck, I'm close," he gasped, picking up the pace. You moaned, digging your nails into his shoulders as the intensity of the pleasure built inside you. "Come for me, baby," he urged, his hips pumping faster.
“Oh fuck," he growled, pushing your back against the wall. His hips moved in a blur, his cock pistoning in and out of your pussy. You could feel him getting closer, the way his hips pumped harder, faster.
The heat of his skin against yours, the roughness of his hands on your hips, it all combined to send you spiraling out of control. You could feel yourself getting closer and closer, your nails digging into his shoulders as you tried to hold on.
Then, with a final, deep thrust, he came inside you. His cock pulsed, filling you completely as he let out a long, low moan of satisfaction. His body shook against yours, their combined weight holding you against the wall.
"Harder," you cried, your voice hoarse with desire. He obliged, thrusting into you harder, deeper, his movements growing more frenzied. You felt the beginnings of your climax building, the tingles in your core turning into a burning need for release.
With one final thrust, Aaron buried himself to the hilt inside you, groaning loudly as he came, his seed shooting deep into your womb. You moan loudly, your own orgasm ripping through you, body shuddering under the intensity of the pleasure.
Slowly, he pulled out of you, his cock slipping wetly from your pussy. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against yours, their breaths mixing in the air. His heartbeat was racing, his chest rising and falling rapidly under your hands.
As he regained his breath, he leaned down, his forehead resting against yours. His eyes were intense, boring into yours as if trying to see something deep within you.
With a groan of completion, Aaron thrust into you one last time, his hips slamming against you like a pounding heartbeat. You cried out as your body shuddered in ecstasy, your orgasm taking you completely by surprise.
"That's it," he whispered, his voice rough with desire. "I'm yours." His hands slid down to your hips, holding you gently but firmly. He leaned in, his lips brushing against yours in a soft, lingering kiss.
His thrusts became even more frantic as he reached his own climax, filling you with his hot seed. He growled low in his throat, his hips slamming into yours in a rhythm that felt primal and forbidden. This was addicting—too addicting.
Finally, he stilled, his hips still pressed against yours. You were both panting heavily, his sweat mingling with yours on your skin. You looked up at him, feeling a wave of desire wash over you again. "More," you breathed. "Please. Again."
Fuck," he groaned, collapsing against you. You panted heavily, your heart racing. You knew you couldn't let this happen again. But god, it felt so good.
Hotch's breathing was ragged as he finally pulled out of you, leaving a trail of their mixed fluids on your inner thigh. He rolled off of you, still panting heavily.
He thrust one last time, and cried out, his voice raw with pleasure. You heard him grunt in satisfaction as he pulled out of you, his soft cock pulsing with each thrust. He held you close for a moment, his heart hammering against yours.
He ran a shaky hand through his sweat-dampened hair. "I shouldn't have done that," he said after a moment, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's... it's against protocol." The admission only seemed to make him look more vulnerable.
"It's too dangerous," he continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "Our lives are complicated enough without adding this to the mix." His dominant exterior resurfaced, masking the vulnerability he'd momentarily shown.
As you accept the files, a mix of concern and determination etched on your face, you assure him once more that you'll do your best. "I'll go through these thoroughly, Hotch. I promise."
His hands trailed slowly down your back, stopping at your hips. "You feel so fucking good," he mumbled, his breath hot against your ear. "I don't want this to end."

xx
The sun is gonna rise again
At the end of the day, Emily didn’t feel better. Worse, she felt weaker as hours passed and when they finally opened their home door, the pain was almost unbearable. But she couldn’t just say it and pretended it was alright although Aaron knew something was up. He was looking at her with worried eyes, feeling something was different from usual. His fiancé didn’t rush to Sergio as usual, giving hugs and telling him how much she had miss him. Instead she just rushed to the bathroom, and he could definitely hear her groans through the closed door.
“Em.” Knocking softly at the door. “Are you alright in there ?”
She didn’t answer, too busy throwing up. Her whole body was failing on her, and she hated it. Losing control was the worst thing that could happens to her. For a second she just pressed her forehead again the toilets, feeling very dizzy, her head turning. No way she could pass out again and in here, that would be so humiliating even if her fiancé had already saw her in worse cases. But being hungover and sick wasn’t something Emily Prentiss was ashamed of.
“Yeah.” She groaned, trying to at least sit up, “give me a minute.”
He knew deep inside of him that she needed time for herself and some privacy but on the other side he couldn’t just leave her on her own, considering how she was feeling. And as minutes passed, he couldn’t wait anymore, opening the door thankfully not locked, failing to hide his smile when he saw she had fallen asleep.
“Oh Em.” He thought to himself, lifting her up and carrying her the bridal way to their bedroom. She didn’t even flinch a bit, letting him put her in bed. Once he got sure she was alright, Aaron quickly made his way to the shower, still worried because it was unusual for her to get sick like this. And then he doubted, nausea could be sign of…? No way, she would have told him. When he got back to their room, he was still very confused but decided to wait for her to wake up before making theories that would only perturb his already busy mind. He quickly fell asleep, exhausted from their case, hoping Emily would be fine.
But she didn’t.
She woke up hours later, feeling a sharp pain in her stomach. And it was nothing she had known already, it was painful as hell and she couldn’t stifle the cry of pain that escaped her mouth. “Fuck.” Her stomach was burning from the inside, she struggled to sit up, her vision was blurry and it wasn’t because of the darkness around her. “Fuck…it…hurts…”
She could barely finish her sentence that she saw the light on Aaron nightstand on. He’d been barely sleeping and all of his sense were turned on, his face livid when he saw the pain all over her face. “Em what’s going on?”
His voice was raspy from sleep, but she could tell that he was worried. She didn’t even remember how she ended up in their bed. He quickly stood up, facing her, slowly stroking her cheek as she grimaced because of the throbbing pain in her abdomen. Tears were rolling down, and she knew lying would definitely not be smart, she was clearly in pain and he could see it crystal clear.
Without more hesitation Aaron grabbed some sweatpants, getting ready in seconds and grabbed her things, stuffing his keys and phone in his pockets, this time he would not ask her, he was dragging her. “We’re going to the hospital, and no it’s not a suggestion.”
She opened her mouth to protest but the sharp pain answered for her as she cried out. “Let me help you baby.” He said, lifting her up, ignoring his back that would definitely not thanks him later.
They rushed to the hospital, Aaron using his federal advantages, not really caring about anything else than Emily. He got totally lost when the nurses took her away from him, unable to stay in here alone and wait when the love of his life was being examined. He had no ideas of what was happening, and the way she looked that scared only made him wants to protect her at all costs.
After what seemed an eternity Aaron, who was almost asleep in the waiting area saw a doctor coming to him. He jumped on his feet, a worried look he couldn’t hide in his face.
“Agent Hotchner?” The doctor asked, clearly seeing the way the other man was nervous. “It was an ectopic pregnancy, we stopped the bleeding, she will be fine now.”
He had never heard of it. The doctor saw his confused stare and started to explain, every words hitting Aaron right in his chest, his heart exploding when he heard that the baby didn’t make it. So she was really pregnant, and she didn’t even know it…
“Does she…”
He nodded. “We told her the second we saw it on the ultrasound. She told us she had been to the doctor but ectopic pregnancy can be hard to detect. She was approximately 6 weeks along.”
“Will she ever be able to carry a baby after that ?”
Aaron didn’t recognize his own voice, it was almost trembling. He was livid, trying to understand how their life had change that quickly, they could have been parents together, and now what he didn’t know he would have was leaving an empty spot into his heart.
The doctor softly smiled, giving him a small tap on the shoulder. “It can happen, but it won’t stop her getting pregnant and bring a child to the world. She will just need regular check ups, and everything will be fine. I’m sorry for your loss.”
He looked sincere, and Aaron only nodded, swallowing hard. He needed to see her, she was probably scared and confused. “Thank you. Can I see her?”
“Sure, she will probably be a bit groggy from the anesthesia but she’ll recover, you should be able to take her home in a few days.”
Aaron thanked him again and made his way to the designated room, pausing a moment when he opened the door, seeing his beloved one in the bed, her face was pale but the pain had fade away. At least she wasn’t suffering anymore and that’s all he wanted, seeing her cry had literally broke his heart in pieces. And at this very moment he was glad that Jack hadn’t been in the house, for nothing in the world he would want to scare his son again.
He decided to wait on the chair next to her, holding her hand to let her know no matter what, she would never be alone anymore. Aaron tried to stay up as long as he could but exhaustion hits him so hard he gave up and fell asleep. He woke up hearing small winces of pain, and as he opened his eyes he saw that Emily was awake, clearly trying to sit up.
“Sweetheart…” he couldn’t hide his relief when he saw she looked better than hours ago. She was very pale, but she was back to him.
“I’m sorry…”
Her voice was shaking, she wasn’t looking at him, ashamed. She had been pregnant two times in her life, first time she wasn’t ready and decided to abort because that was the best option. This time she knew they would be ready together, but she couldn’t make it because her body had failed her, again and she felt useless.
He frowned his eyebrows and kissed her hand. “You have nothing to be sorry for sweetheart, what happened is not your fault. It’s no one fault do you understand ?”
She didn’t move, still feeling guilty, tears silently rolling down her cheeks. He cupped her face so she could look at him, not in the world he would want her to feel bad about something she couldn’t control. “I didn’t know it. The baby.”
Her heart was cracking at every words, her chest full of sadness and her stomach empty. Her hand automatically rubbed it slowly, her brain realizing she had been carrying the perfect mix between her and Aaron. And now it was all gone.
“Emily, sweetheart.” His voice was shaking, and she saw tears rolling down how cheeks.
They both cried silently at the loss of their baby, none of them ready for it, their lives were already so bruised they couldn’t imagine adding something else to it.
Both of them needed each other that was inevitable, they always had this connection even when they both even didn’t know about it, closing eyes when everyone was pointing out this fact. They were both very stubborn that wasn’t a secret.
“Come here with me.” She whispered, tapping the bed, trying to make more place for him to lay. He did what he had been told so, slowly enveloping his arms against her bruised body.
“I didn’t know I was ready for a baby. Until today…” she whispered, her head resting on his torso.
“I was wondering if you were pregnant…with all the nauseas, when you passed out. And I’ve realized i wanted this with you. As long as you want it too, it’s your body sweetheart.” He slowly replies, kissing her front head. He knew her backstory and would never put pressure on her, that was her decision.
“I’m sorry.” She repeated again, fighting against tears coming back.
“You don’t have to be sorry.” He replied patiently, rubbing her back, soothing her like he would do with Jack after a scary nightmare. “It’s not your fault. You could have never planned it to happens.”
“I know but…if I had known about the pregnancy, maybe I could have protect this child…”
“Nothing can prevent what happened, the doctor told me it was inevitable. Beside, I’m glad you’re okay, you’ll recover and maybe we can try again?”
She can’t help but chuckle, her fiancé being the sweetest humain on this planet. “I would like to.”
“Good.” He kissed her again, resting his head against hers. “Try to sleep a bit sweetheart, rest yourself, the better is waiting for us.”
It sounds like a promise, but he know the world will give them a better future, no matters how dark it gets, the sun will rise again. She smiled softly, letting her drift to sleep, feeling safe in his arms.
And that’s how the team found them hours later, they had been worried when none of Hotch or Emily showed up at work so they called Jessica.
“If a story could be written, it would be about them.” Derek said, looking at his friends throughout the window of the room, feeling sad for their loss but knowing they would grow even more strong.
“They don’t deserve it.” Garcia whispered, being very emotive as always, crying softly. She couldn’t bare the knowing of her friends being hurt.
“No one does. But they are strong, and we’ll be there to help them whenever they need to. We’ll let them time, that’s the best to do.” Rossi added, looking at his sleeping friends. “Come on kids, we’ll come back later, Hotch would not want us to stay here day, we have some work to be done.”
They all agreed, leaving the flowers and chocolate they brought near the door, silently making the promise they would always be there to support each other, because that’s how their BAU team worked ever since.

These Wounds We Heal
Chapter 5: The Time She Calls Him
Aaron Hotchner/Emily Prentiss
Wordcount: 1.8K
No Warnings Apply
AN: This chapter has an alternate ending that I wrote which may or may never see the light of day. Side note, so sorry for being dead for three months, I just graduated college. So that's cool I guess. Anyway here's a new chapter.
Read on AO3 here or below the cut!
The next time he sees her it's because she calls him.
He was truly shocked to hear her voice on the other end of the phone. It had been a month at least since he had driven her home from the hospital. One month and still the feeling of her hand in his played constantly in the back of his mind like white noise, silently occupying whatever empty room he found himself in. When she didn’t call the day after he was worried. When she didn’t call the day after that he was disappointed. But in the weeks after that, disappointment turned to relief. He was still freshly divorced, still fighting with Haley over the phone to see Jack as much as he could. This crush was trivial at best, and dangerous at worst. He knew nothing about this mysterious FBI agent who fell into his life at the most inopportune of times. He could guess she liked kids because of her concern over those she saved, but he couldn’t just force a family on this woman. Even if she wanted one, how would he even introduce her to Jack? How could he explain that Daddy met a pretty stranger in the hospital a few times and now he can't stop picturing her every time he closes his eyes.
No, it was best that whatever it was they had ended with a bittersweet memory and nothing more.
Which is why Aaron Hotchner was absolutely baffled to hear the voice of Emily Prentiss when he picked up his cell phone on a Friday morning.
“Hey um, this is Emily… Prentiss,” she had murmured into the phone and he was in pure disbelief, almost forgetting to talk back until he heard her confused “Hello?” come through the line.
“Hi, Emily. Sorry I wasn’t expecting you to call.”
“Oh I’m sorry, are you busy? If you are I can go…” she trails off and he hears a strain in her voice that makes him put down the morning newspaper.
“No, no. You caught me on my day off. I wasn’t planning on going in until tonight”
Because all he ever does now is go to the hospital.
“Oh. Good.” she pauses and he can sense there’s something she’s holding back.
“Emily? Is there something you need?”
“Actually yes… yeah, um, I’m sorry it’s stupid. I should have just called Morgan or something but he's probably hungover and J.J is dropping off Henry at school and Pen is probably just as hungover as Morgan…”
“Emily,” he interrupts, breaking her rambling and willing her to get to the point.
“I think I broke my ankle and you’re my only doctor friend.”
He can’t hold back his laugh, it flies out of him at the absurdity of the situation, at her embarrassed mumbling, and primarily at the fact that the only time he can seem to get a woman to call him back is if she’s injured.
Some game you’ve got there Aaron.
Her scoff interrupts his laughter, and he can practically see her glare through the phone.
“Hey! You gave me your card and said to call if I need anything. This is not very professional of you Dr. Hotchner”
“I’m sorry. I just thought…” you had called because you wanted to talk to me.
He doesn’t finish that thought out loud.
Instead, he shifts to doctor mode.
“Can you walk at all?”
She sighs and he can feel the frustration in her voice.
“No. I barely dragged myself over to the couch and it really hurts. I forget, are broken ankles supposed to swell or not?”
He chuckles again but his concern grows as he hears her take in a sharp breath.
“Do you need a ride to the hospital?”
“No,” she responded a bit too quickly. “No, I just wanted some advice I guess.”
“I can come over, take a look for you?”
“Yea, um, that would be good. If you have time, of course.”
“Yes, I have time. Put some ice on it if you can and elevate it. I’ll be over in 30 minutes.”
When she opens the door he realizes it’s the first time he’s seen her outside of the sterile glare of the ER hallways or the dark of night and something about the natural sunlight makes her eyes sparkle even more than he was prepared for. Emily Prentiss in the moonlight was one thing. Emily Prentiss in the day made his head spin.
The problem was that while her eyes might be dancing at the sight of him, she was also wincing in pain.
As soon as he crossed the threshold into her apartment she sort of collapsed on him, and he found himself supporting most of her weight as he attempted to maneuver the two of them back towards the couch. He apologizes as he deposits her back onto the couch, her grunts in response shifting into hisses as she moves her swollen foot back onto the sofa. The lack of contact makes him cold. He notices an ice pack wrapped in a dish towel on the coffee table, picking it up and handing it back to her. She sounded like a broken record, repeating one apology after another for the state of the apartment, for calling him, for breaking her ankle.
“Emily, it’s fine. How badly does it hurt?”
“It’s fine, I just have trouble walking on it that’s all” she exhales, and he can see the grimace of pain he had predicted over the phone as she raises her foot to rest on the ice.
“You know you really should go to a doctor that actually looks at this stuff. The last time I had to patch an ankle was probably during my residency”
Again, he notices her stiffening at the mention of visiting a hospital and he recalls how she was refusing treatment after her surgery.
“I don’t do well with hospitals. Or doctors. People in my line of work rarely do” she mutters, looking the smallest he’d seen her yet, shrinking even further back into her couch.
He nods and sits next to her, quietly lifting her foot into his lap and stabilizing it. She freezes and pulls away as his hand clasps around her lower calf.
“Listen, if you’re not going to go to an on duty doctor at least let me look at it. I can tell if it's broken or not at least, and set it if I need to.”
She nods in agreement, but still flinches when he touches her again. He looks up at her and sees her wide eyes staring back at him, dilated and vulnerable.
“I’m not going to hurt you Emily” he whispers.
After a moment she sighs and breaks her stare away from him and instead looks up at the ceiling fan. He takes it as a sign to continue.
“How did this happen?” He asks as he examines the swollen joint. It’s angry and red but no signs of bruising, which is good.
“I umm…” she stalls and he catches her eye with a raised brow. “I fell off a stool while I was unpacking my groceries”
She glances over to the kitchen and he can see the aforementioned stool beneath a suspiciously wide open cabinet door. A box of pancake mix sat innocently on the counter next to a half full grocery bag. His mouth begins to smirk as he pictured the scene and she groans in response.
“What?” he grinned, obviously repressing a smile.
“It’s not funny!”she groans, her cheeks red as she attempts to sink further into the couch.
“No, it’s quite serious, you’re right” he agrees, but finds his smile doesn’t fade easily.
Special agent in the FBI and she’s been taken down by a wobbly stool.
She narrows her eyes and he resumes his assessment of the joint, gently pressing on the reddened area and gauging her reaction. She winced where he poked but he didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary.
No obvious deformities or severe bruising.
“Can you wiggle your toes for me?”
She nods in response and bites her lip, moving her toes stiffly.
No loss of motion in the toes. That’s a good sign.
“How would you rate your pain now? Better or worse than before?”
She pauses to think and he feels her attempt to move her ankle forward before abruptly hissing in pain.
“Worse.”
He nods curtly, and proceeds to press against the ankle in various directions, assessing the severity of what he has now decided was a high ankle sprain She curses several times when he pokes at sore spots but overall is a good patient, letting him examine her as he deems necessary before finally returning a verdict to her.
“It’s sprained, not broken. You’ll need to keep off of it for a few days, wrap it if you can, keep icing it and work on regaining motion when the pain eases up. You can take Advil but you shouldn’t need anything more than that.”
Emily sighs in relief, her whole body visibly relaxing.
“Thank god, I thought I was going to have to show up to work on Monday with a cast. That was not going to go over well with the team”
He chuckles, imagining her hobbling down an alleyway chasing after a criminal. She pretends to be offended and slaps him lightly on the shoulder. He pretends it hurt until she cracks a smile again. Neither of them acknowledge her feet still resting in his lap, or how his other hand has come to rest wrapped around her uninjured ankle.
“Do you have anyone that can come over and help you get around? Make sure that nothing gets worse, make sure you eat…?”
“Protect me from any rogue stools?”
She matches the quirk of his lip with a quirk of her eyebrow and he can feel himself falling.
“Yea, I can call one of my team. I’m sure they have nothing better to do on a Friday than babysit me” she laughs to herself, casting her gaze down on her ankle.
“Good. I’ll be in tonight so if it gets worse you call me at the hospital or just have someone bring you in. I’ll make sure I’m the one that's seeing you so no excuses” he states firmly, and she gives him a mock salute as he stands to head for the door.
“Aaron” she calls as he’s walking away. He turns to see her with a shy smile ghosting over her face. “Thanks. You’re a good doctor”
He smiles fully then and nods.
“I’m here anytime you need me”
He watches her rest back on the couch and reach for her phone as he closes the door, giving him a little wave as he exits.
A strange sensation washes over him as he turns and heads back to his car, and it isn’t until he’s driving back home that he places it as longing. The thrill of being needed had latched itself onto his heart and he couldn't help thinking that if she had asked then he would have stayed.
