For the man who has everything

This is my contribution to @choicesfebruarychallenge that’s being hosted by the amazing @bi-cookie and @cxld-play. The prompt is: Karaoke. Thank you for including us all.

“So we’re being joined by Crown Prince Leo and his younger sister, Princess Lily,” the Radio host, Gary Hall- a friend of Ana Di Luca’s and the host of Cordonia’s most popular radio station spoke into his microphone in front of him as he adjusted his headphones so they were more comfortable.

He turned to the royal siblings, “Thank you for coming.”

“Thank you for having us,” Lily answered.

“First things first, Leo congratulations on your engagement to Countess Madeleine.”

“Thank you,” Leo smiled.

“You and the Countess just arrived back from a very successful engagement tour. You got some extraordinary press because of it.

“We did,” Leo nodded, “It went better than we expected it too. We’re both really happy about how well it went.”

Gary nodded and turned to Lily. “Lily you also just finished your first solo tour, tell us about that.”

“It was fantastic. As you said, it was my first solo tour, I went to Aunernal, i was actually able to stay a couple of days longer than was intended and got to see where my mother grew up. Like Leo’s tour I got some amazing press and it went really well,” she explained.

“When was the last time you visited Auvernal?” Gary asked.

Lil thought for a second, “I was about seven it was just before my mother passed away.”

“Now the big reason we invited you is because of your mental health campaign. Lily you’ve been quite open about what you've struggled with in the past.”

Lily nodded, “Yeah, i think if we’re going to be telling people to open up and talk about it, it would be hypocritical if i didn't do it myself. These types of things kind of go both ways, you can’t tell someone to do something and do the complete opposite.”

“It’s a very brave thing to do,” Gary noted.

“In a way it was but it needed to happen to show that everyone, no matter who you or where you come from, that mental health issues can affect you. We’re always taught how to look after our bodies but we really need to know how to look after ourselves mentally too and how to talk about it if you are struggling,” She explained.

“Like your tours the campaign is getting a lot of attention and people are talking about it,” Gary mentioned.

“That’s exactly what we want. I couldn't be happier with how it’s going.”

“Good. Now you two agreed to answer some questions that people have texted in.”

“Yep,” Leo nodded.

“Are we going to regret this?” Lily asked.

“Quite possibly,” Gary teased. “Okay first question comes from a woman called jenny. She wants to know if you’re allowed phones?”

Leo laughed, “We are yeah.”

“Really?” Gary asked, “Have you got a family whatsapp group?”

“No, but I would love that,” Lily said, turning to her brother, “Should we get Liam, Dad and Regina to get in on It too?”

“I don't think that’s gonna happen,” Leo said, shaking his head with a grin.

“Next question is from Michael. He wants to know if Leo and Liam were in a fight, who would win?”

Leo shrugged, “Me, obviously.”

“I sense a little bit of sibling rivalry going on?”

“Just a bit,” Leo revealed, smiling.

“ He also wants to know if all three of you were in a fight, who would win then?”

“Lily,” Leo answered.

“Why?” Gary asked.

“I did mixed martial arts for about six years. I could take them both,” Lily said, rather confidently.

“I am learning so much,” Gary said excitedly. “This is the highlight of my career. Okay, we’ve got a couple more. These are one i actually want to know. Kate wants to know what you watch on TV? Do you watch stuff on royalty and you’re like, it’s not like that at all?”

Lily laughed, “Funnily enough i started watching The Crown the other week and yeah, I mean I've met the British royal family and it is kind of accurate.”

“Did you watch that movie called ‘Queen Eleanor’? Was that accurate? Because that is based on your life.”

“I have seen it,” she nodded, “There’s a few little bits in there that quite how it happened but for the most part it’s spot on.”

“Do you watch anything else?”

“I love Supernatural. I’m three seasons behind, i really need to get on that.”

“What about you Leo?” Gary asked.

“Me and Madeline have just finished Game of Thrones. We were a little bit behind, just finished it last night.”

“I haven't watched it,” lily chimed in.

“You should,” Leo advised.

“It is good. Now we’ve got two more. David asked if you’re allowed to order takeaways?”

“Yes,” Lily nodded.

“They must never believe you when you order it to the palace.”

“We don't actually order it to the palace. Somebody, that is not us, will go and pick it up,” Lily explained. “Or if your Prince Leo, he’ll do it himself.”

“I love how normal you two are,” Gary said, which caused the both of them to laugh.

“We are just people,” Lily said.

“That lives in a palace,” Gary mumbled, “Now, last question before we move on. When we see you out and about you are wearing the most regal of outfits, do you have any comfy clothes?”

“Yeah, definitely,” Leo nodded.

“Those outfits are amazing but sometimes are a little bit uncomfortable,” she revealed, “ Yeah, of course we have comfy stuff we wear at home.”

“Okay,” Gary nodded, “Today is a special day. It’s His Majesty's 70th birthday today.” the siblings nodded. “Do you still buy him presents? What do you buy for the man who has everything?”

“That is the question,” Leo said, turning to his sister.

“It’s hard. Last year Leo brought him a phone.”

“That’s perfect for your whatsapp group,” Gary chimed in.

“He actually spends a lot of time on it,” Lily revealed.

“I can imagine it: him sitting in the palace playing Candy Crush. That’s brilliant, that is.”

“He’s flying through the levels though,” Leo said.

“I was joking. Does he seriously play?”

Lily nodded, “He’s a little addicted to it actually.

“Talking of your father’s birthday: there’s a video going around the internet of you, Lily, singing his favourite song for his birthday from a few years ago.”

Lily hid her face in her hands as her body shook with laughter. When she looked back up, her face was red and her eyes were welling. “Did you have to mention that?” she jokingly scolded, “I was fourteen and this was when i was really getting into music. I was learning how to play the guitar, piano and attending singing lessons. Like we’ve said it’s hard to know what to buy him so I sang him his favourite song.”

“But the thing is you’re actually good,” Gary complemented.

“Thank you,” Lily grinned.

“Singing was a passion of yours, wasnt it?”

“It definitely was. My mother loved to sing when I was a kid, I must get it from her. The rest of the family aren't really into music like I am,” she explained.

“What’s his majesty's favourite song at the minute?”

“Someone you loved by Lewis Capaldi,” Lily explained.

“Really?” Gary asked, his brow furrowing, “I am learning so much right now. The king likes playing Candy Crush and likes Lewis Capaldi, is he a Billie Eilish fan too?”

“Actually he does like to hum the tune to bad guy so maybe,” Lily shrugged.

“So We’ve got a backing track to someone you loved,” Gary told her.

Her brow furrowed, “Okay...Where is this going?”

“I think you know, little sis,” Leo grinned at her.

“We’ve got it from good authority-”

“Our brother,” Leo interrupted.

“That his majesty is listening and we would like to know if you’d sing your dad's favourite song for his birthday? We’ve also got it on good authority that you haven't got him a present yet.”

She sighed, “I feel like i’m going to regret this: I’ll do it.”

Lily put her headphones on, adjusting them so they were properly on her ears and Leo put his on too. Lily scooted her chair closer to the table and leaned in a bit closer to the microphone. “Happy birthday dad.”

The music started to play, Lily focusing on when the right time to jump in was.

“I’m going under and this time i fear there’s no one to save me,” she started, singing into the microphone.

“Wow,” she heard Gary mutter and she continued, focusing intently on what she was making her voice do, remembering all the tricks and techniques she learnt from her teacher.

Finally she came around to the chorus, “Now, the day bleeds into nightfall and you’re not here to get me through it all, I let my guard down and you pulled the rug, I was getting kind of used to being someone you loved.”

And then finally the song drew to a close and the both men applauded the young princess, who smiled gratefully at them, removing the bulky headphones.

“That was a cover of Someone you loved by Lewis Capaldi from the extraordinary Princess Lily Rys!” Gary spoke into the mic.

Lily was grinning widely, getting sidetracked when her phone dinged. She peeked at it to see a text from her boyfriend.

Drake: You were amazing 😉

Which only caused her grin to grow wider.

I’ve tagged a number of people repeatedly so rather than coming up with 20 specific names, in honour of my having just passed 600 followers, I’m going to tag anyone who has followed me in the last week.

10. Been depressed: Sort of ongoing for me.

11. Gotten drunk and thrown up: I’ve never gotten drunk, mainly because if I get tipsy #10 kicks in, so I avoid. As for the second half, I got some pretty nasty food poisoning from McD’s in the spring of 2012. I remember this because it was the same day (but fortunately hours after) the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo where I got autographs from the likes of Summer Glau.

22. How many of your Facebook friends do you know in real life? 100% because the only people I have on Facebook are people I already knew or are family as I’m not involved in Facebook culture. In terms of Tumblr friends, I’ve yet to meet any of them in person but I am in communication with a few of them constantly.

23. Do you have any pets? No, but my dad has a cat and my brother has three high-maintenance dogs.

24. Do you want to change your name? Nah.

25. What did you do for your last birthday? Worked. But the day after got Peter Capaldi’s autograph and a photo op at the Calgary Expo.

26. What time did you wake up? 6:30 a.m. At least that’s when the alarm was set..

27. What were you doing at midnight last night? Watching Game of Thrones.

28. Name something you can’t wait for: Second season of Victoria. John Rhys-Davies at the Edmonton Comic and Entertainment Expo in September (I’ve been a fan of his since Shogun).

29. When was the last time you saw your mum? The day she passed away in July 2013.

31. What are you listening to right now? Construction noise in the alleyway outside.

32. Have you ever talked to a person named Tom? I work with a guy by that name. He’s sitting about 10 feet behind me as I type this. And he literally spoke to me just as I was typing that last sentence. And he’s talking to me again. Guy won’t shut up! 😂

33. Something that is getting on your nerves: I’m going to hold my tongue on that. People who know me know.

And Stompin’ Tom Connors’ “The Hockey Song” is one I often listen to, but that’s because I’m Canadian and they passed a law back in 1976 that requires every Canadian citizen to listen to that song at least twice a year. 😇

Empress of Mars

I knew I wouldn’t be able to watch last night’s episode, so I was ok with not catching up by then. Still managed to get spoiled...

Hey Brits... if American Doctor Who fans follow you... can you tag your stuff as “Doctor Who spoilers” for at least the first... 12 hours after airing? Because I got spoiled like 5 minutes after the most recent episode aired in England yesterday.

Doctor what are you doing? “Authorizing us to go anywhere we please.” WHICH IDIOT GAVE THE DOCTOR THAT? Or was it psychic paper and I’m just not paying attention. Rewinded. It looks like psychic paper, but we didn’t get a good enough look. The psychic paper isn’t as funny unless we can tell it’s the psychic paper. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN. WHAT THE HELL IS RIGHT. I mean yeah god save the Queen because Elizabeth II is the great but like... on Mars... I know the English colonized a lot of places but they definitely didn’t get to Mars. WOW NOT EVEN QUEEN ELIZABETH, QUEEN VICTORIA. “You’d like that one too! Everybody dies.” OH Bill. TARDIS. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. YOU NEVER LEAVE WITHOUT THE DOCTOR!? WHY?!?!?! ARE YOU SCARED OR SOMETHING?! BUT EVEN THEN YOU WOULDN’T LEAVE WITHOUT THE DOCTOR. But we haven’t had an episode where the Doctor is stranded without the TARDIS in a while so I’m ok with this considering some of my fave episodes are TARDIS-less ones (42, Impossible Planet/Satan Pit). Oh cool, we got old school Ice Warrior Martians. I say! I wasn’t expecting A VICTORIAN ERA DUDE ON MARS.

ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT ENGLAND COLONIZED MARS TOO!? I WAS JOKING EARLIER ABOUT COLONIZING MARS. BAD ENOUGH THE EMPIRE FELT ENTITLED TO OUR ENTIRE PLANET, YOU HAD TO GO TO ANOTHER ONE?!

Doctor. Your first thought should have been “Why is there a Victorian guy with a gun on Mars” instead of “Don’t let the Victorian guy shoot the Martian.” I mean yeah, that’s something important to think of, but that’s more of the immediate second thought after “why is he here?” Robinson Crusoe! I just finished taking a musical theatre intensive, one guy in my class had to sing a song called “Blue Room” and it became a running joke in our program. And Robinson Crusoe is mentioned in the song and I’ll always only think of this song now. Ok I guess that’s the only good thing so far, that they found nothing on Mars worth conquering it for. Oh. Plus you enslaved Friday. Come on. Oh poor baby Friday no please not the last of his kind! Ok but the Doctor’s “Is he now?” concerns me because it could either be the Doctor’s usual “Another last of their kind? I must adopt them” thing or it could be “I know there should be more Martians in the future so what’s happening right now?...” I bet you anything that the Gargantua is something that makes the ship go and that’s why they can’t leave. Oh the British colonial mindset. “They want to help us exploit their lands! ” What was that mindset called where they felt like they were the parent to the people they colonized? Or whatever it was they felt? I forget. IT WAS THE WHITE MAN’S BURDEN. This is literally the mindset of the White Man’s Burden. “Mars is part of the Empire now.” OH god. Oh my god we’re only 20 minutes in. So Jackdaw. You’re not only gonna disobey orders, you’re gonna steal treasures from Mars, and then leave everyone behind on Mars while you go back to Earth. Wow. Can’t get more selfish than that.

A COMMERCIAL FOR THAT MOVIE “LIFE” ABOUT LIFE ON MARS IS SO FITTING. GOOD MARKETING. CONGRATS “LIFE.” GIVE WHOEVER SAID “HEY, LET’S MAKE SURE THIS IS AIRED WITH A DOCTOR WHO EPISODE ABOUT MARTIANS ON DEMAND” A RAISE BECAUSE THEY DESERVE IT.

Aaaand this is why colonialism is bad. Ok he got compressed into a ball or something by that beam what the hell. “You think you can just go about slaughtering my men?” You think you can just go about trying to find treasures on a new land and take it over for your Empire? “What does the pink thing say” THAT’S A STAR TREK REFERENCE RIGHT?! Those tears, Capaldi. Yes. I’m gonna miss Capaldi so much. “I ask mercy for these primitives.” “Primitives!?” Not so nice when you’re the one being called primitive, huh? “We are both surrounded by noisy males.” YES GIRL. Do these idiots really not run unless their colonel says to? These guys are just standing in fear while the Doctor’s like “GET THESE MEN OUT OF HERE.” AND THEY DON’T EVEN RUN WHEN THE IDIOT WHO SHOT THE GUN GETS TURNED INTO A BALL. NOT UNTIL THE COLONEL SAID RETREAT. I GET THAT IT’S IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW ORDERS, BUT YOU CAN’T FOLLOW ORDERS DEAD.

I just wanna say I am LOVING this episode so far. Criticizing British colonialism? Yes please.

“That will hold them!” Will it though? Too bad this is Victorian times and the Doctor is both a knight and banished. Not a good time for him. “There’s no setting for wood, why is there still no setting for wood?” Why is there wood on Mars? Did they bring wood with the only purpose to make a door? Is he laughing because she’s a black police officer or because she’s a woman police officer or both... Ok... just because she’s a woman. At least he’s not racist. “I’m gonna excuse your Victorian attitude because... Well... because you’re actually Victorian.” I mean yeah. Oh great. Martians coming out of the ground. If Vincey dies I’m gonna kill someone. HEY. I DON’T SAY THIS OFTEN. BUT FUCK YOU DUDE WHO JUST PUSHED VINCEY IN FRONT OF YOU SO HE’D DIE INSTEAD OF YOU. I THINK IT WAS THE CAPTAIN. CATCHLOVE OR WHATEVER YOUR NAME WAS. I WASN’T PAYING ATTENTION BECAUSE LITERALLY IN THE HATS AND UNIFORMS AND FACIAL HAIR YOU ALMOST ALL LOOK THE SAME. BUT WHOEVER YOU ARE YOU SUCK. Aaaannnd my Internet sucks so it’s buffering right when Bill and the Queen are gonna have a talk woman to woman. Come on. I bet half the warriors are dead. “Like... like ‘Frozen.’” OF ALL THE MOVIES OF THE LAST COUPLE DECADES, THAT’S THE ONE YOU KNOW?!?!??!! And now the Captain’s trying to leave without everyone else. Great. YES COLONEL.

OK but now I’m like “I feel like British soldiers going to Mars would be in the history books” but then I remembered that this is Queen Victoria. She probably had Torchwood deal with it and keep it all a secret. I’m pretty sure this is after she formed Torchwood, but I’ll have to double check. But I think the werewolf thing was the 1870s so.

“Aways been my problem.” “What” “Thinking like a warrior.” Awwwww Doctor no. Alpha Centauri? Why is that ringing a bell? I should have written in this post earlier “I bet this is all full circle, they have to build the God Save the Queen thing to bring them there in order to build it so it brings them there.” because I had been thinking at some point in the midpoint, because I felt like not even the colonizers would write something like that in rocks on the surface, so it probably was the Doctor. But I didn’t put it in, and I should of. About time you got back here Narodole and Missy. I mean yeah that’s a good question, Doctor, are you alright?

I LOVED that episode. Oh my god. I loved it. I love this season so far so much. Oh my god. It’s great.
