Just another one of those posts where I do a bit of a general update on a few things. This time opening with an edited scan of Maomao from Nekokurage's Kusuriya no Hitorigoto manga adaptation to get your attention. Boo!
I've been reading the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto light novels and enjoying them in the sense that I think preteen me would have liked them. I started reading the LNs earlier this year (as they're great for reading in waiting rooms and the like thanks to their short format) and I think the LNs are definitely my preferred version of the story. The anime has a nice OP theme but is fairly middling otherwise and I don't go much on the art in either mang adaptation (though Nekokurage's art has improved recently and Maomao looks less like a giant-headed baby doll in the Animate bonus cards per my scan above). Maomao is the real draw in all versions so obviously I preordered her Nendo the first moment I could — bring on May 2024!
Tumblr media
Speaking of translated light novels you can buy right now, the first part of the Oguni no Koushaku Reijō wa Tekikoku nite Kakusei Suru light novel was just released as A Young Lady Finds Her True Calling Living with the Enemy Volume #1 by Cross Infinite World (see here). It's a solid story that doesn't overstay its welcome and Bertine's business acumen is just *chefs kiss* for those after a competent heroine.
Once the second and final part of this is out, I'd love to see Cross Infinite World pick up another short (but unrelated) PASH! Books publication, Shiitagerareta Shuusai Reijou to Ringoku no Haraguro Kenkyuusha-sama no Amayaka na Yakusou Jikkenshitsu. The web novel version was quite solid but I haven't read the printed version yet. Yeah I like science ladies, what can I say? It would be so good to keep seeing interesting titles for girls and women being picked up for English release because I tire of isekai villainess stories (which imho peaked years ago with Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou) and there are some great little tales out there that do things a bit differently & just need to be shown to the right audience.
Tumblr media
I'm so excited for Metallic Rouge in early January! While it used to be that getting an original property from BONES was always exciting, it has been a while since they've created anything I've really cared about but I'm hoping this will break the drought. If a show has Izubuchi, Kawamoto, Yamada contributing then you know I've got to be there. Plus a couple of lady leads in a SF setting? Trailers with some great action and music? I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much but I'm keen to give it a shot. If it isn't for me at least I can say I've given it a chance, right?
Tumblr media
I've been terrible at sharing the latest about this year's Silent Möbius anniversary, but I'm not a news blogger and frankly very few people care so eh y'know, whatever. BUT I figured I should say something about FAIRYTALE PARFUM releasing scents for the key members of AMP this month (though Mana has been totally forgotten, it seems). You can check out the range here, there will be a launch event on the 10th of December in Shinjuku too.
Asamiya drew new artwork for the bottles and while I'd love to get Kiddy's perfume that nods towards her bodily acceptance in its notes, importing that stuff is just too much of a pain so I've settled for a tiny acrylic stand of Kiddy instead. Sadly there's no option to buy a set of stands so I just went "whatever" and grabbed just my best girl. Anyway, if you'd like a tiny acrylic stand of an AMP girl with extra weird proportions then make sure you check out the FAIRYTALE PARFUM website.

Of Stoats and Systems
Things are getting heated on various platforms but rather than @ anyone and contribute to the engagement spiral I thought I'd just lay out the various pieces of information that have caught my attention about Dimension 20's upcoming season, and the inferences and assumptions that I'm bringing to them, and see whether any of it resonates.
Evidence
Exhibit A: In the first Fireside Chat, the talkback show for actual-play podcast Worlds Beyond Number, Erika Ishii references a "cyberpunk Watership Down" concept, and is hushed by Aabria Iyengar, who says that it may be coming up sooner than Erika thinks.
Exhibit B: In the SAG-AFTRA production signatory database, a season of Dimension 20 is listed with the working title of Stoatal Recall.
Exhibit B.5: The 1990 film Total Recall (as well as the 2012 remake), based on a 1966 short story by Philip K. Dick, "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale," concerns a man who undergoes a memory-alteration procedure which may or may not turn him into a superspy, depending on whether the events of the movie are all in his head or not. The important part here is the theme of ability enhancement.
Exhibit C: Once the Burrow's End trailer was released, the two pieces of media that were officially referenced by Dropout as inspirations for the season were very obviously Watership Down (1972 book, 1978 animated adaptation) but equally consequentially, The Secret of NIMH (1982 animated adaptation of the 1971 book Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH).
Exhibit C.5: The central premise of the NIMH stories is that experiments done on rats by the National Institute of Mental Health gave them human-like intelligence, organizational capabilities, and (in the movie) access to magic and the use of weapons.
Exhibit D: Aabria, in both a Bluesky post and a Tumblr tag essay which have been widely shared, has explained that she chose 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons as the system for Burrow's End not due to comfort with a familiar system or to commercial pressure to not deviate from what fans are used to, but because particular elements of the system design lent themselves to the specific story she wanted to tell in ways that no other TTRPG she knew could.
Cross Examination
Now, many people have taken this to mean that intense and recurring violence is a central aspect of the season, since one of the most obviously robust elements of D&D is its battle simulation mechanics. (There are, of course, many TTRPGs which incorporate mechanics for drawn-out, granular combat, several of which position small woodland creatures in a big dangerous forest instead of traditional fantasy races in a fantasy realm as the protagonists.)
Others have suggested that D&D's elaborate magic system is the key element, since bits of the trailer suggest that the Stupendous Stoats are granted some kind of magical abilities by the Blue. (Games where woodland creatures specifically use magic are rather thinner on the ground, but there are again many TTRPGs that support a wide variety of magical abilities with a high degree of customization.)
I've even seen people proposing that D&D's fundamental origins as a killing-and-looting game rooted in 20th century imperialist narratives in which powerful people go into uncivilized lands, plunder their treasures and are considered heroes for it, is the point, especially since stoats are predators that take over the burrows of animals they kill, and are an invasive species in some parts of the world. (Other games about imperialist conquest and the ramifications of power achived by violence do exist, although it would be untrue to say that D&D is not the market leader there.)
Closing Argument
But if I'm looking at the themes of the works that appear to have been the most direct inspiration for Burrow's End, there's something else that D&D does more completely, if not actually better, than just about every other system.
A fundamental theme of the cyberpunk genre is the use of technology to exceed current human limitations, whether through biohacking, neuromancy, or even merely robotics so advanced as to be indistinguishable from humanity. Even if the technological element does not seem to be overtly present in Burrow's End, exceeding limitations does.
As a film, Total Recall was deeply influenced by cyberpunk, which was itself deeply influenced by Philip K. Dick's work, but the concept of a procedure which could endow a normal man with the capacity for action-movie violence and a deeper awareness of the reality behind the façade of the everyday is, obviously, older than cyberpunk.
In Watership Down, rabbits whose mental abilities exceed those of other rabbits often attribute them to a kind of mystical communion with deific figures in rabbit mythology; in the NIMH stories, the rats' enhanced abilities are more straightforwardly attributed to human experimentation.
In every case, the concept of abilities that increase over time and exceed the natural physiology of the protagonist species is an essential part of the worldbuilding of the source material. And what D&D does more of than almost every other system, perhaps what it does to excess, even to the exclusion of design elements that would better contribute to a satisfying narrative, is power leveling.
Speculation
As you might expect from the foregoing, I take the position that power leveling is, in itself, not particularly compelling as a central narrative (unless your horizon for compelling narratives is limited to video-game RPGs and shonen anime, I suppose), even though it's endemic as a narrative device. As I sarcastically noted elsewhere: "it's impossible to have adventure without also having power fantasy, I've been told by every media property aimed at boys since the Carter administration."
But the tone of the trailer for Burrow's End is hardly that of a shonen anime or Schwarzenegger film. And as a listener of Worlds Beyond Number I can't really believe that Aabria just wants to level up her stoats to a point where the dangers of the forest are trivial and even the dangers of whatever human institution (there are camo-covered trucks tucked away in the DM screen) may be responsible for their ability score increases are managable. What I can't stop thinking about, what tantalizes me, is the possibility of power leveling as a narrative device that can go both ways. What if deleveling is also on the table?
And the work I haven't seen anyone else reference but has always been paired in my head with Mrs Frisby & the Rats of NIMH since I read them both as a tween, one of the supreme works of sci-fi psychological horror (even though it isn't usually discussed in those terms), is Flowers for Algernon.

— VALORANT MODERN ACTING AU! BEHIND THE SCENES, WHEREAS;
While filming Fade's trailer, they had to refilm Cypher and Fade's scene multiple times because he couldn't stop laughing when Fade placed her fingers on his neck. He's ticklish.
Fade got jumped scared by Neon because instead of landing outside the warehouse, the Filipino jumped inside through a hole in the roof.
Chamber is the person who accidentally gives a bit of a spoiler about what's going to happen next in the series.
Everybody contributed to the graffiti wall on Jett's music video and she loves it.
Viper tripped on the treadmill machine during their first attempt at filming and she couldn't stop smiling about it. She was too busy looking at her reflection in the window to make sure she looks like she hates the world. So after that, she had a harder time staying in character.
WARM UP! The most iconic moment in episode 4: Yoru fell off the ledge of the window, he was distracted by juggling the credits lying in his hands.
When they were practicing their script for Duality, Phoenix got scared from jumping down and accidentally landed on Viper's back.
Skye will never get used to having to film two versions of herself. The animals alongside her are very much real, and she can't get over the fact of how friendly they are.
Neon ran into the wall while spinning around in her room, so she tried holding the table for support. The table, and eventually the whole set, fell apart. The producer blamed it on the production crew who couldn't stop laughing about it. (Neon's fine, she thinks it's funny too.)
Everybody screamed when Breach and his dog walked down the red carpet. Sova likes to tease him that his animal best friend surpasses Breach's fame.
During DUELISTS, Jett expected to land on her own two feet while jumping above Ascent's small city river. She fell into the water, and she begged Phoenix to stop laughing at her.
Astra's signature pose became an icon, but what the public doesn't know is how many times her legs would cramp a bit when she does it. Brimstone would call in the background,
"You're getting old!"
"Shut up!"
Omen cape is ripped off because while Kay/o was fiddling with all the small machines on his arm, Kay/o pressed a button that just sucked up half the cape. Omen looked at Kay/o in horror while Kay/o violently shook his head.
RETAKE! During the scene where Phoenix looked through the small hole in the metal crates, Raze wanted to do it too. While everybody was distracted, she snuck into the set and peeped through it. So when Killjoy accidentally passed by, she thought her best friend looked cute and took a picture of it. Now, Raze's profile picture is her eye.
Cypher only agrees to "die," in each cinematic as long as he falls on a bed with Nora sitting on it. Nora shakes her head each time he falls on the cushioned mattress laid on the floor because she knows, he's grinning stupidly under his mask.
"Be grateful, I could have been doing more important things than sitting here and wasting my time."
"I never knew that all the times we hugged each other in bed was a waste of time~"
She doesn't feel butterflies in her stomach, no she doesn't.
Brimstone's neck hurt terribly when he acted dead in Kay/o's arms, Killjoy tried massaging his neck to ease the pain. He's grateful, but it won't stop him from rolling his neck every couple of times.
When Reyna was passing by a café, she never heard such high-pitched screeches it made her raise an eyebrow. Oh, the picture of her in the dress got posted on Twitter.
Sage, by accident, threw the slow orbs on Sova's face. She doesn't know how it happened, but it did. It took a while to remove it from his hair and Sage can't stop apologizing.

The Crusade
Brief History
Before the 2012 David Production anime, there was another adaptation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure done in 1993 by Studio A.P.P.P. (Another Push Pin Planning). It was 6 episodes long and adapted the Stardust Crusaders Battle in Egypt arc. In 2000, Studio A.P.P.P. adapted the beginning of Stardust Crusaders. These were 7 episodes long. All 13 episodes had a half an hour run time. In 2007. Studio A.P.P.P. released a film adapting the first part of JoJo, Phantom Blood. According to viewer testimonies, the film was roughly 90 minutes long and ran for 3 months in various cinemas. After that, it was never seen again. All that exists now are the 16-minute workprint, 2004 teaser, 2 trailers, and various promotional materials.
What I’m doing on this blog
I simply want to bring attention to the JoJo OVAs as they were a brilliant piece of media and criminally underrated. I also want to provide content for fellow fans and provide resources to be able to watch them. In addition, I want to bring attention to the Phantom Blood movie so there could eventually be some sort of full release. I will be doing all this by
creating my own original content (in the form of clips, text posts, homegrown shitposts, and more if I ever gain new skills)
reblogging content from other creators (art, gifs, and shitposts)
providing information
advertising other’s works (outside of Tumblr)
and more (if I think of more)
Even if I go dormant at least my resources will be archived :) (I am a university student so I may be slow)
Disclamer: I am not affiliated with anyone I post about. I do not own any website I advertise. I only want to share what I have learnt.
Where can I watch the OVAs? (EDIT: 16/03/2023 Notelu’s restoration is down)
There are two places I go to to watch the OVAs. Notelu’s restorations on Internet Archive and aniwave. Do not watch the ones on YouTube as the quality is less than ideal (to say the least). We mean stretched footage and overly saturated colours, and in some cases bad audio delay.
https://archive.org/details/JJBAOVA Notelu’s version contains files for the English, Japanese, French, and Italian dubs as well as colour corrections (check out her channel for the comparisons).
https://aniwave.to/watch/jojos-bizarre-adventure-2000.4v2m/ep-1
https://aniwave.to/watch/jojos-bizarre-adventure.4xy7/ep-1 Alternatively you can watch it on aniwave. However, the highest video quality is 480p while Notelu’s is 1080p. And again, Notelu has done colour corrections which enhances the viewing experience.
Stand alone list for sharing purposes
How can I learn about the movie?
The trustworthy sources of information regarding Phantom Blood (2007) are the Phantom Blood Archive website, the new JoJo wiki, and the Phantom Blood Archive discord server (valid link provided).

Important
Do not contact the people behind the Phantom Blood movie. They will not answer you and we already have people working on this.
Do not ask me for the Phantom Blood Archive discord link. While I am a member I am unsure if I am allowed to share it (the link expires in 7 days anyway). If you want to join you can find a link online. I have made sure to check. EDIT 20/03/24: Link added still keeping this incase I have to remove it for any reason
Do not unnecessarily contact the people searching for the film. They are busy people. phantombloodarchive.org has a contact feature, if you have something to contribute or have a question that is a good place to go. Please be mindful when using this.
OVA fans, do not bash any anime fans. They have the right to enjoy the anime and it benefits no one to attack them. Do not force them to watch the OVAs either.
Anime fans, please do not bash the OVA fans. We are only a small group and just want to show that it exists and has massive shitpost (and shipping) potential.

Hi, everyone!
It's still Kate Berlant Month on my website for four more days (September flew by!), and I recently published another audience member interview about the NYC run of her popular one-woman play.
Tumblr media
This time, I chatted with my friend, Alicia. You might know her as "ravenhpltc24" online, and if you've ever searched "Bo Burnham Inside" on YouTube, there is no doubt in my mind that you've come across her beautifully edited trailers and compilations.
youtube
We've even collaborated on two videos together, including One Year In(side) and another that I'm especially proud of: Bo Burnham watches INSIDE (which you can read about how that mashup came into being here).
Anyway, Alicia saw Kate in September last year, and she did her best to recount her experience with Kate's butt touching her husband's head AND her contributing to the show by saying what time it was!
Enjoy the interview, and stay tuned for more comedy fun! ✌🏼🐔

Oh my gosh, there's a new "Money Heist: Korea" trailer and I have so many questions!! (Spoiler warning just in case!!)
First of all, a hug with the professor that seems to mirror the canon scene - so are they also brothers in this version? He does get a shot in the trailer where he says - presumably to the Professor - to not forget those who trusted him until the end, and it's giving me such "Andrés' last conversation with Sergio over the comms" energy?
There's also the shot of Berlin actually going outside? Does he survive this time around? Or does he, for some reason end up, going back into the mint? He does look a bit more tired in the scene where he's presumably talking to the Professor over the comms, so the scene from the outside would probably come before the convo (or even the hug) with the Professor? But that now raises the question of "what kind of plan would entail that they get out of the mint only to go back in?"
I'm honestly super excited for this Part 2, and I'd love to hear your thoughts too, if that's alright! :D
Hi anon! OMG Thanks so much for sharing the news with me- I looked it up the moment I saw your ask! Same here- I'm super excited, but I also have some questions XD
I also get the vibe that they're mirroring the hangar hug with that shot! So there's an even higher chance that the professor and Berlin are still brothers here; it's such a big plot "twist" so I don't think they'd do away with it but there's a chance that Berlin is the younger brother this time going by the actors' actual ages. Same! The way they edited that line makes it look like it's Berlin speaking to the professor (it's definitely his voice) but hmmm, I think it's also possible that this is Berlin talking to Tokyo before presumably taking command back from her and throwing her out.
Also possible that the "poor lives" refers to the people who left the concentration camp with him; maybe they're also involved with the professor's plan somehow. In that case, would make make more sense for him to be addressing the professor. Either way, it definitely feels like K!Professor owes Berlin more than he's letting on.
re: outside: I see him stepping out with the hostage girl and one of him with the whole group, but I think the first shot was him making a point to the camera before going back in and the second is everyone coming out either as part of a negotiation or proof of life (but the heist isn't over with so they all head back in anyway). So alas, I'm pretty sure he never makes it out of the mint at the very end.
As for other thoughts (thanks for the interest! of course it's alright!), I think I caught a shot of a hostage about to bash Oslo's head in, so he and Moscow will probably still die for sure this time. I'm curious about why Berlin threw Tokyo out this time around since she doesn't have any reason to do the Russian Roulette stunt XD And in lcdp, everyone was frantic because they thought the profe abandoned them; here, there's apparently a mole among them instead of among the police. Which really makes me wonder who the hell it is and if it's a wrench in the heist or another step of the professor's plan that wasn't in the original.
I'm most excited to see the differences between this and the original (ie. what the professor's goal is this time around, how Captain Cha will factor differently than Angel, if "Lisbon" still follows the professor to wherever he escapes to this time), confirmation for the brothers' relationship and how they reunited, who the "mole" is, how Seoul will contribute, why Tokyo gets thrown out, and of course, the various ways Berlin will undoubtedly suffer asdfasdf.

If anyone wants to make some Christmas posts already, here's the two Christmas Sing trailers Sing 1: [x] Sing 2: [x] Also in regards to the first link, Buster Moon looks so good in red. Also they made him attractively confident. In regards to the second trailer, does anyone else find it weird that Darius is often treated as a main character in trailers and stuff (if my memory servers me right), despite barely having a part in the movie? Like he's kinda just there to be an asshat for a few scenes and that's it lol. Like he kinda just contributes nothing besides adding extra pressure to Meena's plot. Idk just a small take from me. Anyways idk if I'll have time, but hopefully tomorrow I'll make a Mariah Carey Sing edit because I think it'll be funny.

5 Movies, 4 Songs, 3 Essentials, 2 Books, 1 Quote
Ah, my lovely lovely @wolfpants -- I'm so so so very excited about this tag, let's see what I can contribute...
5 Movies -- and I'm doing this in no particular order
Call Me By Your Name (trailer)
I mean, not only is Timothée Chalamet an absolute dream in this (and I don't even mean that looks-wise) but also I wept absolutely ugly tears for ages after the ending. I'm not entirely sure if that admission is the greatest way of plugging a movie, mainly because I wasn't prepared for feelings of that magnitude, but by gosh the intensity was so so so perfect.
Shelter (trailer)
That scene when Shaun comes down the stairs to open the door and finds Zach there gets me every single time and I swear I've watched this movie at least 10 times. It doesn't get old, it never will. Also, the soundtrack is pretty cool. Couple of really amazing tracks by Shane Mack. A personal favourite is 'Remember to Forget'. Always wanted to write something to that song, but never had an idea that stuck. If someone feels inspired and wants to surprise me, I'm always game ;-)
Our Flag Means Death (no trailer but 6 mins of Lucius being a MOOD)
Shush, it's a movie. All you need to do is string all 10 episodes together and you have an extended edition movie and I will not accept anyone even trying to disagree with me on that. Also, do I *really* need to give any reason at all as to why OFMD is so damned fabulous??? I mean, come on! If you haven't seen it yet, what rock have you been hiding under?
Brokeback Mountain
Go ask @phoebe-delia if you absolutely need an explanation of why this is on the list. 😸 😸 😸 This lovely sweet angelic devil will gladly spell it out for you.
Lan Yu 藍宇
This is an LGBTQ romance set in Beijing, China in 1988/89. Liu Ye is an absolutely brilliant actor and he's made me weep more than once (I recommend A Beautiful Life). As far as love stories and plots go, it is far from perfect but given the time it was filmed and the topics explored, it's a firecracker. It was also one of the first Chinese-language LGBTQ movies I watched and actually understood after I started learning the language and that made me appreciate it even more.
4 Songs -- again in no particular order
Hurricane - 30 Seconds to Mars
I cannot live without this song. It's a perfect walking song, I've exercised to it, I've had it play on repeat while in a writing frenzy and it's accompanied me during the one or other Shibari scene. There is such greatness to this song but writer or not, I do not have the words to explain what it does to me and why. Sharing the acoustic version for your listening pleasure.
G.E.M. - 你把我灌醉 (Intoxicated)
One of the few Chinese songs I can sing where I hit the notes mostly right. At least in the beginning. Apart from that, the lyrics, the voice!!! <3 <3 <3
JJ Lin 林俊杰 -女儿情 (A Daughter's Love)
I have a very soft spot for JJ Lin's voice in this song. Especially in the live version, which I have to listen to every couple of weeks and the mood usually strikes me right out of the blue. If you're interested in a rough translation of the lyrics, here is one that's not half bad.
Frank Sinatra - My Way
I remember, when I was a very little spruce I was always obsessed with my Papa's vinyl records. When he played them for me, when he took the record out of its sleeve and moved the needle and the music started, oh gosh, I was gone. My Papa never admitted to having a bit of a soft spot for good old Frankie but I distinctly remember Papa picking me up and twirling me around to the tunes of Mack the Knife. And later I discovered 'My Way' and it's always been a bit of a soundtrack to my life.
3 Essentials
Coffee (I mean, I have you met me?) writing (again, have you met me???) memories of my dad not necessarily in this order
2 Books -- why am I only allowed two???
Captive Prince Trilogy
Shush, it's one book. End of. And if you need any reasons as to why that's on this list, check out all the fanfic I wrote about those Kings.
The Great Wall by John Man
One of the first non-fiction books I read that truly impressed me in the sense that I realised informative works need not be dry and boring at all. John Man has such a refreshing way about him when writing about historic events that reading it not only feels like a journey back in time, but I distinctly remember having a good few laughs.
1 Quote
The beautiful part of writing is that you don't have to get it right the first time, unlike, say, a brain surgeon. You can always do it better, find the exact word, the apt phrase, the leaping simile. (Robert Cormier) This always struck me as particularly inspirational because it reminds me that I don't have to strive for perfection when I write my first draft. Getting there is a journey of edits, reaching out and asking for help, learning from others, researching, of saying to myself (repeatedly) that right now, this is as good as I am and that continuing to write will only result in improvement.

Notes from research on showreels
I was looking up tips for creating a showreel - specifically one for sound - so compiled some of the stuff I found. The first source had a lot of SD tips as well, so I included them.
Here's all my notes and sources on what I read!
6 Tips For Creating Your First Sound Design Showreel: | A Sound Effect
[mostly for game design but still useful cause doing design for games would be a shout]
Start with a Stereo bed for all generic "base" things (room tone, wind, general ambience) than add SFX in mono for stuff that makes noise - and automate that to camera position
Unique soundscape and ambience for each different camera position
(more for games) Little things matter when doing foley, beef it up - when cloth moves it should move, zippers, bodyfalls and impacts can always be bigger than you think. Each chara has different outfit, therefore have fun with deciding how that outfit sounds when it moves
Make stereo SFX mono : When things in distance sound too 'wide' due to source mats, and therefore doesn't sound like its positioned correctly, make things mono.
Related to above - if source sounds too stereo but needs to sound wide, convert source SFX to mono and add stereo reverb + widening plugins (Valhalla Supermassive and iZotope Ozone Imager are free recommendations)
For redesigns, replace what music is doing in the scene with cinematic SFX (i.e: for a horror scene, add "metal hits, drones, and risers to emphasise all of the key story beats")
Short and snappy showreels for the win - around a minute is his rec, with 15 sec clips and 5 sec filler if needed
don't start it with 5 second of silence - add a little sound effect to start/end titles!
Build the perfect showreel: 10 top tips | Creative Bloq
[tips for first showreel build - mostly for animation but still has relevant tips]
Cut Ruthlessly - only your best work
Keep it short - 1 to 1.5 minutes in length - studios look at a lot of reels
Start and End well - begin and end the reel with your best work, specifically ending with your second best piece and starting with the first. But keep in mind that the rest should still be decent work
Think of showreel as an ad; which aren't usually more than 30 seconds long. You are selling something.
(More for animation) match your reel to the studio! for instance, don't put in Orc models if a studio does architecture visualization.
(more for animation) Indicate what you created - in student films often its group work, so be clear in what you contributed
(Animation but could be relevant to film portfolio) Show inner workings: Shot breakdowns, software used
Better to go for simple and well done than complex and mid
related- Technique beats individuality (might be more for animation, but could apply to film)
Be a Sound Designer - Episode #1 - Building a killer showreel - sounDesign
[Tips and examples of reels - relevant to first reels]
Should flow well - avoid choppy fade ins and outs
using existing footage of a film trailer, animation, etc and doing a redesign is alright for an entry level position if you have no other work - Make sure to credit properly
2 minutes is borderline too much. keep it around 1 minute with a snappy edit
Put your reel in your linkedin profile
MY THOUGHTS/IDEAS
once I get a rough idea of what to put into it, going into AE and/or Blender and mocking up some transitions and short filler to design to in order to transition from clip to clip could be a good idea
movies - Whats the best way of presenting a sound design showreel ? - Sound Design Stack Exchange
[people answer the above question]
reel should depend on who views it: Musuem curator, Film producer, ad agency...
Redesign again - make it interesting and pleasantly surprising.
particles and colors - theatres and museums, maybe, but def not for film and tv. Viewers want to see something they relate to
How to make a Sound Design Demo Reel (designingsound.org)
[pretty simple and goes over a lot of the above]
Label your responsibilities - make everything you did clear.
Add details to your credits - if your doing sound design, your doing audio editing as well most of the time. Foley Artist, Recording Engineer, VO record, ADR, mixing engineer, music editor, and music supervisor are all valid credits that you probably have done.
showreel - What to put in show reel - Sound Design Stack Exchange
[another Q mostly about content]
Include what you want to work in - i.e Game audio creation, commercial based prod/post prod audio, long term linear media like film, quick contract work like logos and short SD projects.

Annon-Guy: Tales of Symphonia Remastered Story Trailer.
Plus, a look at the 'Chosen Edition' by the end.
BTW, how funny is it that Colette makes the jump over the bridge, but Lloyd, Sheena and Zelos are the ones who fail to make that 😂.
P.S. Good thing Emil, Marta and Richter never had to attempt that stunt, right? I can see Alice and Decus attempting to do so and failing while chasing Emil and Marta while Richter would try and play it safe.
GKD here! I still wish they would have ported DotNW to the switch with this remaster, even if they didn’t change anything. I could always plug in my Wii and play it again, but my Switch is much easier to access. I’d love to revisit both titles, honestly. But other than the Chosen Edition with the sticker packs and stuff, there really isn’t much new with this that I would consider buying this port new. I’d consider getting it used or on sale, maybe. But since I own Symphonia and still have the ability to play it if I chose to, the remaster just isn’t bringing me enough to consider getting it again. But I am excited for a generation of new fans to find out about it. Maybe DotNW can get some new hype off this remaster? I know that when I finished Baten Kaitos years after it came out and found out there was a Prequel that I rushed out to get it! So hopefully people will be the same with this. As for Colette making the jump when no one else can, she’s technically got the advantage of wings. Even if she’s klutzy. The fact that we know Zelos has wings and chooses to take a dive instead is the truly funny part. Colette just breezing over it despite being the klutz of the group IS funny. But Zelos going “Yeah, I’m just going to take the plunge, I guess.” is the cherry on top. Richter may be more athletic than Aster but yeah. Richter wouldn’t attempt a jump like that. Especially not if he could have Aqua follow them while he catches up. I think even if Emil and Marta couldn’t make the jump, Tenebrae could always fly them across. But the game severely under-utilizes Tenebrae as an unofficial party member. He gets four big moments that I can remember of contributing outside of commanding the party’s monsters. The Fishing Rod transformation, the Celsius Transformation, stealing (and eating) the detonator in the Casino, and then the sacrifice he made to lift the golem monster Alice rigged to blow Emil up. I feel like the writers just forgot that Tenebrae is an extremely powerful shapeshifter and only wrote him physically interacting with the world to help the party when they ran out of other ideas. Onshuu no Richter under-utilizes Aqua the same way, honestly.

Time for a Salty Meta Post about Martin!
people who’ve followed this blog for a bit know that spending six hours combing through text for some goddamn sources is my specialty, so i compiled every time jon ever talked about martin’s work in season 1. which for the record, he stopped complaining about all the way back in episode 26, where he was angry that martin of all people got hurt.
things jon gets mad at martin for:
not being able to find records that don’t exist
not being able to find someone based only on a first name
the Dog
not wearing trousers in his off-hours
being the one that got caught up in the jane prentiss thing
mag 004 and mag 012 both have jon taking potshots at martin over research that was proven accurate by outside sources
things jon has never once complained about:
martin not understanding the filing system and just putting stuff away at random
martin being clumsy, constantly ruining things, spilling tea everywhere everyday, etc
martin turning in incompetent, poorly-edited, or badly formatted reports
martin not understanding the terminology used, skills expected, etc., and generally being extremely new to the field
please for the love of god stop making martin the silly bumbling idiot who can’t do anything right just because he doesn’t have a formal education. there’s zero evidence for it in the text, and it’s really weird to act like a 4 year degree would outweigh the *10 years* of job experience he has, not just in academia, but in the institute itself by season one. my boy has worked there longer than ANY of the rest of the main cast. screw you guys.
tl;dr: martin is never once shown to be bad at his job, jon pretty much only ever gets mad at him for the really stupid first impression and also not finding stuff that no one else was able to find either. after martin got hurt, jon talks about his research basically the same way he talks about tim’s or sasha’s work.
fucking proof under the cut:
(i didnt include the s1 finale or martin’s statement bc that’s just...two entire episodes of them talking to each other, but there isn’t really any notable Martin Complaints in either of them imo)
I swear, if he’s brought another dog in here, I’m going to peel him.
[pre-launch trailer]
.
Well, technically three, but I don’t count Martin as he’s unlikely to contribute anything but delays.
[...] Alongside this Tim, Sasha and, yes, I suppose, Martin will be doing some supplementary investigation to see what details may be missing from what we have.
[MAG001 Anglerfish]
.
Martin couldn’t find any records of Ex Altiora as a title in existent catalogues of esoteric or similar literature, so I assigned Sasha to double-check. Still nothing.
[MAG004 Pageturner]
.
I had Martin conduct a follow-up interview with Mr. Woodward last week, but it was unenlightening. Apparently there have been no further bags at number 93 and in the intervening years he has largely discounted many of the stranger aspects of his experience. I wasn’t expecting much, as time generally makes people inclined to forget what they would rather not believe, but at least it got Martin out of the Institute for an afternoon, which is always a welcome relief.
[MAG005 Thrown Away]
.
Martin was unable to find the exact date the original house was built but the earliest records he could find list it as being bought by Walter Fielding in 1891.
[...]
We cannot prove any connection, but Martin unearthed a report on an Agnes Montague, who was found dead in her Sheffield flat on the evening of November 23rd 2006, the same day Mr. Lensik claims to have uprooted the tree.
[MAG008 Burned Out]
.
According to Martin, who was here when they took this statement, it was at this point in writing that Mr. Herbert announced he needed some sleep before continuing. He was shown to the break room where he went to sleep on the couch. He did not awaken; unfortunately succumbing to the lung cancer right there. Martin says the staff had been aware of how serious Mr. Herbert’s condition was, and had advised him to seek medical aid prior to giving his statement, but were told rather bluntly by the old man that he would not wait another second to state his case. I can’t decide whether this lends more or less credibility to his tale.
[MAG010 Vampire Killer]
.
“Veepalach” might also be a mishearing of the Polish word “wypalać”, according to Martin, which means to cauterize or brand. Admittedly, if Martin speaks Polish in the same way he “speaks Latin,” then he might be talking nonsense again, but I’ve looked it up and it appears to check out.
[MAG012 First Aid]
.
I sent Martin to look into this ‘Angela’ character - not that I want him to get chopped up, of course, but someone had to. Apparently, he spent three days looking into every woman named Angela in Bexley over the age of 50. He could not find anyone that matches the admittedly vague description given here, though he informs me that he had some very pleasant chats about jigsaws. Useless ass.
[MAG014 Piecemeal]
.
Martin declined to help with this investigation as he’s “a bit claustrophobic”
[MAG015 Lost John’s Cave]
.
There simply aren’t enough details given in this statement to actually investigate, short of Martin confirming that Mr. Vittery did indeed live at the addresses he provided.
[MAG016 Arachnophobia]
.
Oh, he’s off sick this week. Stomach problems, I think.
Blessed relief if you ask me.
[...]
I asked Martin to try and hunt down Mr. Adekoya himself for a follow-up, but have been informed that he passed away in 2006.
[MAG017 The Boneturner’s Tale]
.
MARTIN
Well, I need to tell someone what happened, and you can vouch for the soundness of my mind, can’t you?
ARCHIVIST
That is beside the point.
[MAG022 Colony]
.
Martin! Good lord man, if you’re going to be staying in the Archives, at least have the decency to put some trousers on!
[MAG023 Schwartzwald]
.
Martin found one other thing while combing through police reports for the Hither Green area. About a month after this statement was given, on May 15th, 2015, police were called out to once again investigate the chapel.
[MAG025 Growing Dark]
.
I know, but it would have to have been Martin, wouldn’t it? I mean, anything goes wrong around here, it always seems to happen to him. Anyway, we’re getting off topic. Why didn’t you report this?
[MAG026 A Distortion]
.
Martin made contact with the son, Marcus McKenzie, but he declined to talk to us, saying that he’d “already made his statement.”
[MAG027 A Sturdy Lock]
.
Tim and Martin had a bit more luck investigating Tom Haan, though only really enough to confirm that he seems to have completely vanished following his departure from Aver Meats on the 12th of July.
[MAG030 Killing Floor]
.
Martin’s research would seem to indicate the place employed a reasonable number of international staff they preferred to keep off the books
[...]
TIM
Ah well, that’s actually what he was asking, huh! Um, apparently Martin, uh, took delivery of a couple of items last week addressed to you. Did he not mention it?
ARCHIVIST
No, he… Oh, yes, actually. I completely forgot. He said he put it in my desk drawer, hold on.

A Goode Year - 2021
Not a great year for a lot of people but we are concentrating on the goode stuff as usual.  Matthew Goode’s year has been BUSY!   This is appearing a bit earlier this year coz I’m not around much now until after Christmas.
January
January was all about ‘A Discovery of Witches’ season 2.  I found nothing else in January’s archive - just wall to wall ADOW.  So that was a goode start to the year.
Tumblr media

February
More of A Discovery of Witches was aired on Sky TV and meanwhile filming wrapped on season 3.  Teresa posted an hilariously awkward goodbye from Matthew!
Tumblr media

March
We got the news that Matthew would be starring in a new movie ‘The Colour Room’ with Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor.   Day one of filming was the 30th March - so a really quick turnaround.
Tumblr media
📷 Mail
We also got our first ADOW season 3 reveal from Sky -
Tumblr media

April
Matthew continued to film ‘The Colour Room’ and we got some great BTS shots -

Location filming started at Highclere for Downton Abbey at the end of April, although we don’t know when Matthew was able to join in.
May
This was probably the highlight of the year even tho’ it only lasted a couple of hours.  Matthew joined Twitter!!  As expected he was completely hilarious and totally out of his depth.   Fuelled by wine, he just about had time to gush about golf, get ‘busted’ by Steven Cree and change his Twitter name to Goodey101. Matthew was swamped with love and ... backed off like a scalded cat!   I’ll add his entire twitter contributions here coz - not many and very typical of Matthew.

📷 Matthew Goode’s very own Twitter account!
Apart from that glorious few hours - Matthew finished filming for ‘The Colour Room’ in early May and wrapped up with the photoshoot to promote the movie.

We also got the trailer for ‘The Duke’ in May - which looked so much fun.
Tumblr media
📷 The Duke trailer/ my edit
HOPEFULLY Matthew found time to do a bit of filming for Downton Abbey. We know he is in the movie - but not for long. 🤞🏻 it’s a bit longer than last time.
June
June brought us two new project announcements.  Firstly ‘The Offer’ - a Paramount plus series about the making of ‘The Godfather’ movies.  Matthew will play Robert Evans, the film’s flamboyant producer.
Tumblr media
The second project was ‘The House’ - a creepy animation for Netflix that is aimed at an adult audience.
Tumblr media
We know now that Matthew voiced his part of ‘Raymond’ for ‘The House’ in June [thanks @matthewhugsdiana].  So not much time to play golf and see his family before heading off to LA.  ☹️
July
‘The Offer’ started filming in LA.
Tumblr media
 📷 Paramount
Did anything else goode happen in July coz I’m getting nada apart from that?!
August
We got the 1000th trailer for ‘The King’s Man’ [at least it feels like there were 999 before this one!]   A tiny bit of Matthew playing with swords and grenades in this one plus more of his Scots accent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A little more of ADOW season 3 was teased by Sky -
Tumblr media
September
Our first glimpse of Matthew in Hollywood doing a zoom q and a at TIFF to promote ‘Silent Night’-
Tumblr media
Matthew was a handful as usual.  The man who used to think nothing of lighting up a cig mid interview has matured into a man who casually makes himself a brew mid interview.  He really gives no f****. Hilarious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Sky teased us with a tiny bit more of ADOW season 3 and there is going to be more dancing!  💃🏼 -
Tumblr media
October
‘The Colour Room’ trailer was released.
Tumblr media
And THE trailer for ADOW S3 appeared at last.  Woohoo!
Tumblr media
November
November was all about ‘The Colour Room’.  A truly lovely movie that leaves you feeling goode.  Matthew was just perfect as Colley Shorter who is saved, in more than one way, by Clarice Cliff.
Tumblr media
The ‘Silent Night’ trailer was released -
Tumblr media
We got even more ADOW season 3 behind the scenes teasers -
Tumblr media
And we got a peek of ‘Raymond’ - Matthew Goode’s character in ‘The House’.
Tumblr media
📷 Nexus Studios
Obviously modelled from life then.
There was probably another ‘The King’s Man’ trailer in November but by that stage I was losing track. 😂
December
The one and only red carpet appearance of the year came at the ‘Silent Night’ LA screening and we got a preview of Matthew’s ‘Robert Evans’ hair -
Tumblr media
‘Silent Night’ was released and personally I found it a tough watch.  Yes there is comedy but there is also a lot that will make you cry - and make you think about the movie for a long time after.   Matthew was fantastic as always in portraying a man who is desperately trying to hold things together for his young family while being the perfect host for the last Christmas party.   Oh and Matthew’s famous trumpet/trombone impression finally got in a movie!
Tumblr media
A trailer for the Netflix animation ‘The House’ was up next and it looks intriguing.
Tumblr media
I know we are still in December and ‘The King’s Man’ is just out but I have to wait to see that next year.  ☹️   But I can’t wait to see Matthew being goode at being BAD.
I’m not around much for the next week so I’m posting this early.  Goode Things Coming in 2022 will appear soon.
📷 my edits unless credited to others.
