Pepper pressed her fingers to her eyes before trying to focus AGAIN on her list. The dimmed lights of the med bay and the sounds of the monitors attached to her husband made it almost impossible.
She thought back to four days ago—had it really been only four days.
When Tony had come down that ramp, it was like Afghanistan all over again—until she saw the desperation and grief on his face. And then he’d collapsed and everything was a flurry of activity.
She’d found out later from Nebula that the nanoparticles had served their purpose back on Titan. The wound had been sealed, but the infection had already taken root and was festering within him. With the malnourishment and dehydration on top of that, it was no wonder Tony was doing so poorly.  The IVs chock full of antibiotics, nutrients, sedatives, and all of the medications to prevent his blood pressure from rising and his kidneys and liver from failing hung from hooks at the head of the bed. The nasogastric tube would be a fixture for a bit, she knew. Tony would hate it when he woke up, but she’d put him straight and they’d keep going. The monitors, though, she took comfort in. She could see that his heart was beating; that air was flowing through is lungs—that he was alive and fighting.
She shook those thoughts away, because it was four days later and there were things to do. She was supposed to be on the other side of the compound, preparing for a phone call with the U.N. (See item #4) but Tony’s doctor would be here shortly to do a wound check (See item #3) and evaluate a few other nanoparticle related things that Tony would drool over, but, well... Pepper wasn’t worried about nanotech, she was worried about Tony. If things went well today, they would hopefully reduce some of the medications he was on so they could start waking him up. That decision, of course, depended mostly on the inflammation around the original site and some blood work results from last night.
Pepper prayed they’d agree to starting to wake him up today. She missed her fiancé so, so much. She took a moment to put her list back into her briefcase and settle back into the chair by his bedside. She took his thin hand in her own. “What do ya’ say, Tony? Is today going to be the day I get to see those Bambi-eyes of yours?”
Of course, he didn’t answer.
“Pepper?”
She jumped, throwing her hands to her chest, in an effort to calm her racing heart. “Oh!”
Dr. Cho was apologetic as she came further into the room. “I am so sorry, Pepper. I thought you heard me when I came in!”
Pepper waved the apology off with a laugh, “No! I’m sorry! I must have been daydreaming,” She said as she continued to wait for her heart to settle... it seemed though, that it didn’t want to.
Dr. Cho smiled at her sympathetically. “No one could blame you, Pepper. You look dead on your feet.” Then, as though only seeing her for the first time, Dr. Cho asked her, “How are you doing? I mean really, how are you doing?”
She laughed again, trying to sound okay, “I’m doing fine, thank you. I’m just trying to salvage what’s left of the world while Sleeping Beauty here keeps us all waiting.”
“Ouch. No Prince Charming for our Mr. Stark, I see?” Dr. Cho teased back as she began her assessment on the man.
Pepper shook her head. “Oh, no,” she stood up from her seat, “Leave it to the amazing Ms. Pepper Potts to save the world—one board meeting at time, thank you very much!” And she gave a mock final bow and stepped away from the bed.
Pepper looked up from her brief performance and saw how close she was to some of Tony’s equipment. Embarrassed, she stepped further away from the bed. “I’m sorry. I’m taking up the room you need.”
Dr. Cho shook her head. “You’re fine, Pepper. If I need room, I’ll ask.”
Pepper was sure she was about to ask another question when a knock on the door interrupted her.
The doctor smiled at the new addition to the room. “Dr. Rainert, I’m so glad you could come. Dr. Rainert,” she nodded to the man then gestured to Pepper. “I’d like to introduce you to Ms. Pepper Potts, Mr. Stark’s fiancée.”
Dr. Rainert gave a polite bow. “It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he announced and then got right down to business. “I am assuming you know why I’m here?”
Pepper nodded. “Of course, while Dr. Cho will be doing the actual wound check, you’ll be evaluating the affect of the nanoparticles on healing, scarring, and such, correct?”
He nodded to confirm. “I know it’s a stressful time for you, Ms. Potts, but Mr. Stark and I had been quite excited to see how this worked in a field setting and,” he seemed to be struggling to contain his enthusiasm even as his research partner lay unconscious in the bed beside him. “Well, this information will be most helpful going forward.”
It all felt a little ghoulish to her, but she wasn’t going to say it. She was there to support her fiancé and make sure he was getting better. Then she’d...
A buzz filled the room. It took Pepper a second the figure out that it was her cell phone. Blushing at the obvious faux-pas, she blurted a hurried apology, grabbed her phone and dashed out into the hall.
“Pepper Potts speaking,” she answered, fumbling with the phone before pressing it firmly to her ear.
“Pepper? It’s James.”
She cringed. ‘James’ meant that Rhodey was currently surrounded by mucky-mucks, which was strange because that call didn’t need to be made until, she glance at her watch, “Rhodey! It’s 9:30!”
“I know!” he exclaimed. “I was worried something was wrong with Tony when you didn’t call in. Is everything alright?”
Pepper lost herself for a second. She never lost track of time! Never!
“Pepper?”
“Oh! I’m so sorry!” She came back to herself and panicked. “Please extend apologies for my lateness to the others. I’ll grab my briefcase from the other room and head to my office, okay? I shouldn’t be more than five minutes. Promise!”
Rhodey sounded understanding, so she allowed herself to take a quick breath after letting him go and then rushed back into Tony’s room. She just needed to collect her briefcase, head back to work, and get the day back on track.
She came up short, however, when she caught a glimpse of Tony’s wound— exposed to her for the first time.
It definitely wasn’t what she’d been expecting and it took that realization for the room to spin, tilt, and then disappear from around her.
She was out before she hit the floor.
* * * * * *
Pepper woke with a start, and a headache.
“Pepper?”
Confused, she scanned the room, only barely relaxing when Rhodey stepped up to her bedside.
“Hey, Pepper, are you with me now?”
She nodded, but still didn’t understand, “What...?” her voice cracked so she cleared it and tried again. “What happened?”
He took her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze, “You, Ms. Potts, fainted.”
Pepper glared at him, “I did not...” She coughed from the dryness of her throat.
“Hang on, Pep. Let me just...” Rhodey stood to get her a glass of water from the stand beside her bed and then handed it to her. “Be careful,” he added as he watched her hands shake.
She took the glass and took a dainty sip. It was as she pulled the glass away that she saw the IV in her forearm. She straightened up and threw her arm out to show him, ignoring the sway as she made the movement. “No. I don’t need this.” Of course, she didn’t! She was fine. “You can take this out, right?”
“I could, but I won’t, Pep. Don’t be ridiculous,” he spoke calmly. “You passed out, and I’m here to make sure you stay right there and take care of yourself.” He gave the bed a poke, then sat back in his chair crossing his arms and making like he had the final word.
Pepper stared at him for a second, trying to determine just how far Rhodey would take his apparently self-appointed role. She looked down at her wrist and scowled. “Rhodey, where’s my watch?”
He smiled sweetly, “I have it in my pocket, along with your wedding band, if you must know. I’m keeping it safe and sound until you’re ready to leave.”
She rolled her eyes. “I can take them back now. I’m too busy for all of this so I’m just going to—“ She sat up fully and swung her legs over the edge of the bed opposite to Rhodey while looking at the clock on the wall.
Dammit! She’d already missed several phone calls with the United Nations and Tony would be upset if anything happened to the Parkers’ things while they were— (See items #5-9)
She made a plan on the fly. “If I leave now, I can call into my board meeting and send out a couple of emails to cover the calls that I missed out on...”
Rhodey came around to the other side of the bed and stood directly in front of her. “Pepper,” he put a hand on her knee, pretending he could stop her from standing up and walking out the door. “You have nothing to do for the foreseeable future.” He took a really good look at his good friend. “Really, Pep? You’ve gotta stop for a sec. When’s the last time you got a really good night’s sleep?”
She pointed an accusatory finger in his face. “Don’t Rhodey! You, of all people, know what it’s like to have to clean up after Tony—and I know this isn’t his fault, I know!” Her chin quivered. “There’s just so much to do and—“
He cut her off, “And there are people who are here to help you.”
A tear trickled down her cheek. “You know I’m not wired that way,” A few more escaped.
“Trust me. I know—and I’m pretty sure that’s why none of us understand how you ended up with that lughead in the next room.”
She smiled as she wiped away the tears, thinking of how lucky she was that he loved her, if she was being completely honest. And then she remembered. “Tony! Oh, no! I have to—I should be there and I’m here...“ Pepper weakly pushed Rhodey’s hand away so she could slide off the bed.
“Pepper, don’t.”
Both Pepper and Rhodey froze as Dr. Cho came into the room.
She had been on her way to update Pepper about her and Tony from the looks of all the two clipboards in her hand, but tossed them aside and rushed forward when she saw that Pepper was getting upset. “Hey, hey, Pepper. It’s okay. Everyone is okay.” She stepped in front of Pepper, effectively bumping Rhodey to the sidelines. “Pepper? Do you hear me? Tony’s fine, I promise.”
Pepper’s breathing had definitely picked up so she nodded that ‘yes’ she’d heard and Tony was fine but still... “I need to be there, Dr. Cho! I was supposed to know what—what was going on and I’m such a—“
“No.” Dr. Cho took charge of the conversation. “I’ve just left Tony and he is absolutely on the mend. Dr. Rainert thinks that healing rates are perhaps even accelerated by the nanoparticles, but that just means the wound is healing faster.” She looked Pepper in the eye. “Are you hearing what I’m saying?”
Pepper nodded.
“Good. Now,” Dr. Cho, ever the consummate professional, gently manoeuvred Pepper back into the bed as she spoke. “You, Ms. Potts are exactly where you are supposed to be.” She grabbed a fresh blanket from the end of the bed, and with a precision borne of years of practice, covered Pepper up. “You need to be taking care of yourself, too.”
Pepper pulled her arms out from under the blanket and petulantly crossed her arms in front of her.
Rhodey gave a low whistle from the wall he’d stationed himself at. “You’re not gonna make this easy on anyone, are you, Pep?”
Pepper simply glared in answer.
“Well,” Dr. Cho clapped her hands together to bring their attention to her. “I’m actually going to need to talk to Ms. Potts about some test results now so, Rhodey, if I could get you to step out into the hallway for a few minutes, I’d be most appreciative.”
The defiance changed to fear in a flash. “No! He stays! Please?” She looked at her dear friend and held out a hand for him to take. “You’ll stay, right?”
He stepped closer, grabbing ahold of her hand in both of his. “All you have to do is ask, Pep.”
She smiled in relief and took a deep breath. “Okay.” Pepper looked at Dr. Cho. “What’s going on?”
Dr. Cho took a second to retrieve the clipboards from where they’d been discarded on the floor and then pulled up a rolling stool to the side of the bed. “Well, I think it goes without saying that after seeing you this morning, I suspected that this would be a simple case of exhaustion and sleep deprivation.” She put Tony’s clipboard aside and flipped some pages on Pepper’s chart. “But with aliens and spaceships suddenly landing in our backyard and in light of recent events,” she paused to give weight to those events, “Well, I figured more blood work would be the better bet.” She was oddly nervous and smiling strangely as she spoke up, “And I don’t normally give this type of news but, you, Pepper Potts, are pregnant.”
It was a good thing she was already lying down.
Her mouth opened as though she were about to say something, but nothing came out. And she was going to say something, really! But then all she could think was ‘Morgan’—not her strange uncle, but their Morgan.
The silence stretched. Neither Rhodey nor Dr. Cho seemed willing to interrupt Pepper’s processing.
Eventually, Pepper did find words. “I have so much to do,” she breathed out.
“You have absolutely nothing to do for the next two weeks,” Dr. Cho contradicted her gently.
“Two weeks? But...”
“But nothing,” Dr. Cho continued. “I may not be an OB, but your blood pressure is high—really high. I have blood work that indicates some deficiencies that need to be addressed as soon as possible. To start, your iron and B12 levels are hovering dangerously close to low, which tells me that you’ve been powering through even before all of this insanity with coffee. Which brings me to,” she gestured to the IV bag. “You were dehydrated, too, so you know. It wasn’t the worst I’ve seen, but I’m guessing it’s been a particularly busy few days?”
She whispered, “Yes.”
Dr. Cho took hold of the hand closest to her. “You’re going to need to learn how to rest, Pepper.”
She shook her head ‘no’ as she worked herself up, “I can’t! Tony and---“
“And nothing. You’re good friend, Colonel Rhodes here is going to help me roll this bed next door to Tony’s room. Okay? And then we’re going to monitor your blood pressure for a bit—most likely till tomorrow.” She got up, quickly set up the blood pressure monitor beside Pepper’s bed, and wrapped the cuff around her arm.  “ There. We’ll get started with that now. That way, you can keep an eye on Tony while we keep an eye on both of you. Fair?”
Pepper looked from Dr. Cho to Rhodey, “Rhodey, you know I can’t,” she pleaded with him. “I can’t just walk away from everything. You know how much there is to do!”
Dr. Cho pressed a button, and the blood pressure cuff inflated. It was moments later that an alarm starting blaring through the room. She silenced it after a few, point making moments. Dr. Cho said nothing, just gave her a knowing look.
Rhodey, however, was looking unimpressed. “You know you’re not walking away! C’mon, Pepper. You’re a smart woman who has surrounded herself with smart people! You’re gonna have to learn how to delegate, and right quick, lady, ‘cause that’s my niece or nephew in there—and I already know you’d do anything for them... and that include keeping YOU healthy.”
Weakness washed over Pepper in that moment and she sunk back into the bed as she suddenly began to cry.
Dr. Cho quietly excused herself from the room.
“Hey, now. None of that, Pep.” Rhodey wiped some tears from her cheek. “Yeah, things are rough right now, but you’ve still got Tony! And you’ve got me when he’s being an idiot...”
She managed a huff of a laugh.
“Just rest your eyes for a bit, ‘kay?”
“But—“
“No buts, Pepper. First, Tony will kick my ass if I don’t take care of you the way he would if he were up and around.” He pulled the blanket up to her chin. “And second, you cannot convince me that there is not some ‘Pepper-certified’ list to end all lists floating around in that briefcase of yours for me to work off of.”
She moved to get up, but a gentle press to her shoulder had her resting back on the pillows.
“Trust me, Pepper. I’ve got this. It’s in your briefcase, right?”
“Yes.” She wasn’t sure if she was supposed to be embarrassed or not.
Rhodey looked her in the eye. “Pepper?”
She looked up at him with trusting eyes. “Just... please?” She was suddenly so damned tired.
“Go to sleep, Pepper,” Rhodey whispered. “When you wake up, you’ll be with Tony next door and I’ll have some books and magazines ready for you to devour, so you don’t get bored, okay?”
“Okay.”
“I promise you, Pepper, it’s going to be okay in the end.”
And as she fell into slumber, she hoped and prayed for all their sakes, that he was right.
* * * * * *
It was very early the next morning when Tony finally opened his eyes. Pepper was sitting up in the bed next to him, reading a magazine by the bar of light behind her, completely engrossed and missing out on the man awake beside her.
He sounded weak, but in true Tony fashion, the first whispered words out of his mouth were, “I know. I’d miss me, too, but you could have slept in your own bed.”
She smiled big, and slid out of her bed to be next to him. “Tony!” she whispered excitedly, “I’m so glad your awake.” She leaned over to give him a kiss and then looked up to check the door to the room.
He looked over too, wondering what he was missing, and almost asked when Pepper distracted him. “How are you feeling?” She still spoke quietly. “Do we need to call a doctor?”
He smiled lovingly at her and raised a hand to cup her cheek. “I’m fine. Tired.” His eyes were already starting to fall again. “Pep,” his smile turned sad. “I lost Peter.”
“I know, Tony.” She caressed his cheek.
She wasn’t even sure that he knew he’d started crying as the exhaustion pulled at him. “I don’t know how I’m...” he trailed off and sobbed. “I just don’t know if I’ll ever be happy again.”
Pepper’s heart shattered for the man she was going to marry—and then came back together for the child she now carried. “Tony, you’ll be happy again. I promise.”
He clumsily wiped at his wet cheeks, “You can’t know that,” he grumbled and tried to turn away from her.
She clasped his hand in hers and smiled. “I do know, Tony, because you gave me something that will give us both so much joy...”
He was obviously getting confused by her vaguery, so she simply leaned over and whispered into his ear. “I’m pregnant.”
He pulled back so he could look at her fully. She guessed that he didn’t quite believe her, especially after that day at the park. He must have seen something though, because he asked, “Really?”
She just nodded. “And we’re going to figure out how to be happy, both for the baby and for us... and part of figuring that out is getting our Peter back, right? We can’t be whole until little one has a big brother and a crazy Italian aunt, okay?”
He nodded emphatically, “Okay.”
A matronly looking nurse chose that moment to enter the room. “Ms. Potts, you’re not supposed to be out of bed, so let’s get you tucked back in before Dr. Cho decides to extend the BP study.”
She seemed friendly enough so Pepper worked the distraction angle, “But look!” She pointed to Tony. “He’s awake!”
The nurse was onto her and made sure that Pepper knew it. She address Tony first, “Good morning, Mr. Stark, I’m Jody, your wife’s nurse. Is there anything that you need before I help your wife?”
He seemed to still be stuck so he just shook his head ‘no.’
“Alright,” she smiled at him. “I’m going to get your nurse to you right away.” She reached up beside his head and pressed the call button, and then she turned to Pepper, “What is this? The fourth or fifth time since my shift started?” She pointed to the bed. “
She just shrugged and made her way back to her bed. “Are we talking ones that you know about?”
Jody just smiled. “Stay put so you can get out of that bed and visit with your husband properly, okay?”
An idea came to her mind, so Pepper nodded in agreement and waited for Jody and the whirlwind of medical staff to take care of Tony and go.
When the room finally emptied and Tony was ready to drop from exhaustion, she slid out of her bed for hopefully the last time. Tony chuckled as he watched her drag a blood pressure machine from her side of the room to his bed.
“You paid for really big med bay beds, babe. I’ve decided to come and visit,” she announced. He looked like he was going to try to shuffle over but she stopped him cold. “Don’t move. I’ll fit—for now.” And she situated herself beside Tony with ease. “There!”
If he’d been tired before, by the time Pepper had joined him in bed, he’d practically melted in contentedness. “We’ll talk about this when I’m ‘wake, right?” He asked.
“Of course, Tony.”
“And we’ll be happy ‘gain?
She smiled to herself and rested a hand on her belly. “Forever.”

Why fuss at me to get ready when he's still in his underwear making breakfast and on his phone? I had my bath. Now I'm getting dressed. It will be more for me to clean up later. Welcome to my weekend. He's off Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Today is the day we put our 16 year old Shih Tzu to sleep. Sad.
On our way to take our 16 year old Shih Tzu to be put down. 10:27pm.
Got up.
Peed.
Opened blinds.
Took dog out.
Turned on air conditioning.
Turned on tv.
Drank water/crystal light.
Took 2 BC powders.
Did #2.
Cleaned toilet & bathroom sink.
Puff, puff, puff.
Shower.
Washed my hair.
Moisturized face.
Tweezed Eyebrows.
Shaved face.
Got dressed.
Took dogs out.
Puff, puff, puff.
Feeling down.
This is so sad.
My husband asked me if I was getting ready to go. He wasn't even ready. Still in underwear playing his game on phone. I was ready in plenty of time. He's the one lally dagging.
He said he don't want to go in room to watch our dog die. I wouldn't want to die alone. So I'm going to be brave and hold her while the vet puts her to sleep.
I am bringing a towel to hold her in. They'll give her a shot and she'll die peacefully with no pain. I want to hold her and be with her in the last few minutes.
Now hes fussing why I put bathroom garbage pail on top of freezer. Our lab keeps getting in bathroom trash.
He just put our dog in car with a box.
It's real. It's happening.
We have to take her home and bury her ourselves.
She has no idea what's happening.
I feel numb.
Later today we have to take our truck to get air conditioning looked at. It keeps going on and off. It's at 2:30pm.
I might not go.
I might just stay home and clean.
We're here at the vet clinic now.
And our Shih Tzu has now passed. 11:40am.
It was a long wait. And it hurt. We both cried.my husband is going home to bury her.
She died in my arms.
I felt her take her last breath.
Now to go home and get rid of her things.
It will be just easier for me to forget about it.
Got home. 12:01pm.
Our other dog was on couch waiting for us.
I peed.
Loaded washer with soiled towels to soak.
My husband is burying her now.
My husband put her cage in attic.
He didn't want to throw her food bowls away.
I insisted he did.
Now there's just a empty spot on the floor.
I don't know if our other dog realizes shes gone, but they both hated each other anyways.
Need to run dishwasher at 2pm. I already loaded it but I'm running washer so won't be enough hot water.
I need to make my bed & sweep house.
I need to cut and file my nails & toenails.
Watching 'The Crown'....12:12pm.
My mom texted to check on us.
I swept bathroom, laundry room, kitchen & living room.
I wiped kitchen counters and sink down.
My husband is lally dagging in bathroom. He has to be at car dealership at 230. I'm not reminding him again. I already told him once today.
When he leaves I'm ordering pizza & relaxing.
I need some downtime.
Still need to make bed.
I reminded my husband about his appointment for his truck at 130 by asking him when he was leaving. Luckily, he said now. He totally forgot. Mr. Perfect. Normally he would fuss at me or tell me not to school him or treat him like a child. He took it like a champ and got dressed. I was in the truck before him. I'm not staying home especially after just putting our dog to sleep today.
143pm
Our appointment is at 230pm. We have to sit outside to wait on our truck. Hopefully the air conditioner is manufactured defect and our warranty will cover it. Otherwise we have to pay 180 if it was road damaged in some way.
My husband gets mad when people tell him he dont have patience. He couldn't get the bluetooth to connect in the truck to his phone and he got mad. That's surely no patience. I fixed it fast. You just have to take time to figure things out.
Now he's commenting that he sees cars at his job on a Friday but he's off. Go figure. Other people making money. Not him. He's acting surprised.
I cannot stand when he drives and texts. I did not say anything. He finally put his phone down to charge.
Hopefully we'll have a peaceful rest of the day. I'm so hungry. Haven't ate all day.

Wrapping It Up – The 4 x 4 x 48 Challenge
We are living in unique times.  Interesting way to describe this I guess, but it is unique.  Globally, we have pivoted, adapted, and by this time, created some new normals or at least different ways of doing things.  Likely, some good habits have been formed and some may have gone back to some old tricks 😊!!  I know I have consumed more beer and types of foods over the last two months than “normal.” 😊  It is all good though; based on what I’ve been fortunate enough to see, via social media, Facetiming/Video conferencing with family/friends, or just talking with folks, we’ve been overcoming these “unique” times well.  Although changes have been made, one thing that has remained consistent for me is running.  Overall, in the last 2+ months I don’t believe I am running farther or more. Like most of our lives, I’ve just changed some things up a bit.  Part of that has been due to timing and circumstances with the quarantine and social distancing; some because the type of race I have coming up in July; and part because some shit has just gotten boring to be honest.  So, when I saw this David Goggins Challenge video come across my Twitter feed, it grabbed my attention.
You can watch the 1-minute video, but it is basically running 4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 miles.  It was pretty cool how he positioned it too; “if you can’t run, walk; if you can walk; do pushups…….”  It seemed like his intent was to just to get people moving, out of their comfort zone, and adapting to the nonsense.  Since I am training for a 100-miler I thought this would be a great training exercise for a number of reasons.  Obviously, the mile over two days, sleep deprivation, nutrition planning, and one big differentiator, life commitments!!!  In the race, I won’t be thinking about family responsibilities, work, or puppy stuff 😊; it is just left foot, right foot. Since I started this on Thursday afternoon, I still had some conference calls to attend, work commitments, and family stuff so it added a layer.  That said, as it relates to the family commits, Robin, as per usual, and the girls, sacrificed a ton, not only with dinners and puppy stuff, but, at least for Robin, sleep too.  Thursday and Friday nights, I headed out at 1030pm and 230am.  The first session each night, Robin was just about headed to bed but at 230am she was sleeping, and I tried to be as quiet as possible, for her, as well as for the puppy too 😊.  It was nice to hear on Saturday morning once she woke up that that nights 230am session, she didn’t even hear me leave or come back.  Guess all these years doing these crazy things it is good her mind is at ease while I run around Phoenix at 230 in the morning 😊😊😊!! That all said, none of this really came to mind when Robin and I discussed doing it.  All I thought was 4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 miles? I can do that!!  So, at 230pm on Thursday, we got things started, easy peasy and session 2 at 630pm was awesome with a sunset, late afternoon run; I was in my happy place.  All good.  Got back and had a quick dinner (I will get into the nutrition in a moment) and we all were just chilling on the couch.  Now, typically, Robin and I are toes up in bed by 10pm so, as my body clock was telling me, right around 945pm I started dozing a bit on the couch; fortunately, I had an alarm set just in case.  But the thing was, I was setting an alarm for 1010pm to go out and run 4 miles at 1030pm. Needless to say, as I was tying my shoes, my comment to Robin, “why the hell did I commit to this; this is f#$%ing stupid.”  She wished me a “have a good run, I will be sleeping when you get back.” 😊  The thoughts of feeling sorry for myself were quickly gone as soon as I started session number 3 and the night air, cooler temps, and darkness provided a different perspective to my run.  I wanted to run around our area of town just to see what was happening, if there was anything happening.  Out here in AZ, the stay at home orders are being lifted and there are a couple of restaurants/bars I would be running by so I was intrigued to say the least.  There were still a few folks out walking at that time and traffic was light; however, this one bar, about 1 mile from our house, was packed.  I guess the regulars were just waiting for things to be lifted.  I went by again on Friday nights 1030pm run too and same deal. I giggled a bit but it also gave me a sense of relief that maybe things are working toward “normal.” Also, won’t lie, a beer sounded good at that time.
This is where adapting needed to happen because my body and internal clock was not going to be used to these next 30 or so hours.  Running the initial 12 miles from 230pm through 1030pm wasn’t much out of the realm of my comfort zone.  Now, I was getting home at 11pm, trying not to wake up Robin and the dog (the girls were still up doing what teenage girls do at that time 😊), getting fluids in, getting cleaned up, and getting things ready for 230am…….& hopefully trying to get sleep.  Well, I was a bit amped up from the run so I thought that sleep was going to be tough.  I got cleaned up, got plenty of water in me, and then figured I would watch some TV to put me to bed.  Well, that worked, and I fell right asleep and woke up about 90 minutes later.  Interestingly getting up at this moment and getting out was much easier than at 1030pm. Not sure why but it was.  The run, however, was a bit weird and at both 230am sessions.  I kept these 2 runs close to the house around this 1.35-mile loop.  I didn’t want to stray to for, well, since it is 230am. On the first loop, Thursday, I guess this would be Friday morning, I first heard a rooster crowing!!  Yep, a rooster – we don’t live near any farmland.  On the second loop, I heard what I thought was a leaf blower…..@ 230am?  What the hell?  Then, the most interesting thing happened on the last loop.  I was on this one road, drive it daily, and I white SUV pulls out of a side street.  Okay, at that time of night, could be going to work, coming back, whatever.  They pull out but just turnaround and head back where they came.  My first thought was that maybe they were scouting out homes/cars to break into or something or, maybe they were just drunk.  No big deal. I finished up the run and went home; didn’t think about it.  However, 24 hours later, on that same loop at that same time, same car, same spot, pulls out, now we are going towards one another, it stops…………I kept running, faster now and find a dark spot on the road, click off my headlamp and stop. The car was already moving but then did the same thing, u-turn in the middle of the road.  This was a bit freeky man and it was on my first loop too. I was running by there two more times. Holy shit right!!  Well, nothing happened but it was just some weird stuff. I told Robin yesterday afternoon that I was going to go up there all next week at 230am, dressed in all black and see what happens 😊.
That was pretty much the only excitement of the event.  Back to Friday morning, since the nature of this event, getting time on the trails was difficult but did go out at 630am Friday.  Got on the trail, got some climbing in and it was a beautiful day. Stopped to take a shot of the trails from the top that I shared above.  Also was able to get out on the trails Friday night and Saturday morning.  Friday night I was able to meet a nice rattlesnake too!!! By “meet” I mean he was on the side of the trail and scared the poop out of me.  I never did see him, just heard him.  Not sure if I would rather face the white SUV or the rattler?  The remaining sessions were all, pretty much, uneventful; just getting them done and keep moving forward.  Overall, it was a great challenge and believe awesome training on many fronts. Although there wasn’t much climbing, it did offer a number of different layers that will definitely help come July. Want to again thank Robin and the girls for all the support, sacrifice, and help they provide me during these nutty things I do.  All the folks that reached out via text, calls, or the FB live sessions, thank you very much.  Very inspirational and you guys helped keep me going.
Haven’t been much into statistics and stuff when it comes to these kinds of things.  Hell, up until January I was still using my 20+ year old Ironman stopwatch but Robin got me this Garmin one for Christmas and it has been fun to sort of geek out with it.  So, for those that may be interested, I am providing some “noticings” from the 4x4x48 event.  Thanks again for keeping me going and following along 😊!!

Don’t waste a Saturday
Friday’s excursion was epic. But I still had Saturday and Sunday to fill. On my way back from Friday’s trip I talked Ronja into coming with me to a surfing spot in Calicoan Island. It was called ABCD beach. I picked it because it was on a google article and Flitz said it was a good spot.
Going off of basic research and resources, I convinced Ronja it would be an excellent spot to hit up especially as a beginner surfer. I honestly didn’t know how big the waves would get being there and just took a risk. We planned on staying the night but didn’t plan the spot and just hopped a place would be there and available.
Ronja and I planned on leaving at 630 in the morning. We would catch the jeepney to downtown to catch the “Vanvan.” I had no idea where the Vanvans were and we didn’t know how often they departed. Ronja led the way and and I just followed. When Ronja and I got there we found out they depart when they are full capacity. That seemed to be the thing around here.. no time slots of departure, just “leave when it’s full.” While waiting, we bought some really weird citrus fruit that you peel, it has seeds, and it is light green/yellow. Almost tasted like an orange but then tasted like nothing at the same time. I’ll have to find the name of them at some point while I’m here.
We started our departure, which was a crammed hot 3 ½ hour ride. Ronja and I talked for a while, it was too bumpy of a ride to try to fall asleep. About half way through the van broke down. After about 10 minutes of trying, it started again. I’m thinking “what’s stopping this thing from really quitting on us the next time.”
I tried to sleep. I took a towel out of my bag and rolled it up and leaned it against the window. It was so bumpy I would bounce my head off the window and then try to readjust my towel. I felt the driver hitting the gas when he was approaching sharp turns constantly then would slam on the breaks during the turn. I didn’t expect they drive on the right side of the road here like we do but they do!
We stopped at a rest stop after about two hours and paid 5 pesos to use the bathroom. Getting out of my seat I felt like I slipped out because of the sweat. I felt like I didn’t pack enough. I packed one set of clothes, shampoo and conditioner, bathing suit, hat, bug spray, sunblock, and a towel. Ronja packed much more but was prepped for anything. As the trip unfolds it looks like I was a pretty unprepared packer.
Getting back on the bus we drove about twenty minutes more and the vanvan breaks down again. This time the drivers calling someone after he totally flooded the engine. The van is completely packed. So packed a family of five was in the way back seats alone with three rows of three people ahead of them. The van started instantly getting hot. It felt like life was being sucked out from me. The driver got out and lifted his seat and played around with the mechanics for 10 minutes, hopped back in and the van started again right away. I was super impressed that a vehicle can be fixed like that and that fast.
Arrived to Guiuan
We arrived to Guiuan not knowing what was in any direction but was just dropped off in the city. My Nanay’s husband was from Guiuan, she advised me we would have to take the motorized tricycle the rest of the way. Ronja and I wanted to grab lunch but we are both kind of picky eaters. As soon as we set foot browsing the cities food selection, the towns aggressiveness was heavy towards us. People would yell things out their window, try to touch our arms, constantly trying to sway us on their transportation device. It was much different than the people of tacloban.
We stumbled upon the market in Guiuan and browsed all the huts and food selections. To me, none of the food looked at all appetizing. I settled for the last hut and pointed at the pork and rice. Ronja went and bought some lumpia’s and came back. My food was, interesting. I felt like the texture wasn’t something I’ve had before but I just kept going. Each pork bite had a little rice to just mask my questions of what it really was. When I finished I asked how much it was. I felt the woman stall and take a few seconds to think about it and then she said 70 pesos. I paid and left knowing I was charged double. Ronja was shocked I didn’t question the price first. There was another learning lesson. But 70 pesos is not really even $2.
We happen to be right at the transportation terminal. We went around asking “ABCD beach?” to every person we approached. Some peoooe pointed to tricycles, Ronja asked how much it would cost to go to the ABCD beach. The man looked us both up and down and said, “300 pesos..each.” Both Ronja and my jaws dropped. Ronja said, “no I was told it would be 40 pesos.” We began walking away and someone else grabbed us agreeing he would take that offer.
When we were the 8th and 9th person on the tricycle we were able to go the rest of the way to the beach. I was sitting on the outside in be front and was getting smacked with leaves on the shoulder of the road. When we arrived, another woman got off and paid the driver 10 Pasos. Four times the price compared to 200 times is a better trade off I would say.
We hopped off and looked around thinking, “is this it? Is this really it?” Their literally was a villa hotel, a bar called the goat house, and then a surf camp cabin. We started walking without direction and a man from the surf camp started waving us down. I immediately started heading in his direction. The surf camp was packed and full of people just sitting around socialising. I introduce us and said we wanted to surf, and asked if that was possible. He said “of course, anytime.” It didn’t seem like there was not s single tourist at this beach. It was only surfing locals. I asked him where we could find a place to sleep, he offered some hammocks to us or we could check in to the hotel/vila across the street. Ronja and I looked at each other and read “hotel/vila” vibes. But I guess if the hotel was booked that’s what we would have had to do.
Tumblr media
The hotel was not booked, we arrived and asked for a pricing list so we knew we wouldn’t get ripped off. The room was 2,000 pasos for one night and two beds. Not bad at all for your own private and non crowded beach!
The hotel was set back about a quarter mile away from check in and the ocean. I guess if you’re in a typhoon neighbourhood that’s the smart way to go about it. We walked to the second floor of the hotel room and checked into room 208. The room was basic but ultra fancy compared to what we were used to in tacloban. Mine and Ronjas face lit up when we saw a real shower. We were in a no signal zone and the wifi wasn’t working. We set an alarm and decided to rest for about 40 minutes.
I woke up in a panic thinking I slept until the evening. I looked and it was 15 minutes before my 1430 (230pm) alarm. Ronja heard me and woke up herself. We mozied out of bed and got ready to get our surf on. We were exhausted and I was trying to fight the tired demons to carry out with the day. I didn’t want to wast the only opportunity we had on such a short weekend.
We headed over to the surfing hut and the owner pointed to a smaller hut where two goofy guys were standing waving at us. “Those are your instructors” he said. We walked over and introduced ourselves and shared our passed experience with surfing. They said it was 250 pasos (php) for the board per hour and 250 pesos for the instructor. I asked if I could just rent the board. The instructor said no, I needed to go with him because I wasn’t experienced enough. I didn’t argue.
Ronja and I went out into the ocean that was surprisingly warm. The waves were choppy and frequent. Our individual instructors followed. Ronja and I separated and were in different areas to surf. I was a bit disappointed the instructor wouldn’t let me surf on my own. I wasn’t even allowed to turn on my own when a wave was coming. Then, without warning, the instructor would push my board with the wave without trying to teach me to paddle hard with the wave. This went on for the entire lesson. The lesson was supposed to be an hour but it extended to over two hours which was nice.
I asked my instructor why I couldn’t try to do it all on my own with his supervision. He said, “because you don’t know how to read the waves.” I responded, “how am I supposed to read the waves if you’re doing all the work and picking them.” I then asked him to teach me how to read the waves and how to turn on the surf board. He simply said, “you will know how to turn when you know how to surf.” It was very frustrating. The entire month in Ecuador I was able to rent my own surf board. I’ve been degraded to the bumper lanes in bowling.
Tumblr media
I had no problem standing up, there are things I know I have problems with that the instructor didn’t want to teach me. I told him my problem was with paddling out, getting under each wave to get out where I need to be, and paddling hard with the waves before surfing. Instead he had his fins on and ushered me around to some okay size waves and gave me a kiddie push.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ronja did great! She was able to stand for her first time surfing. When we finished we made our way back to the hotel to shower before dinner.
Tumblr media
We had dinner at the restaurant connected to the hotel near the beach. I ordered a banana shake, pancakes, and a grilled ham and cheese. I was feeling the real American diet. Ronja had vegetables and lumpia. The food took nearly a hour and a half to come out and it came out really spaced apart. During our wait it started to monsoon pour, the rain was starting to blow sideways into the picnic seating restaurant. When I asked about my sandwich an hour in, I could see the cook just grabbing the bread.
I felt such a heavy wave of exhaustion. I was super tired even with napping. Ronja asked l, “Do you still want to go to the goat house?” You could hear the laughter from across the street. They have been doing karaoke since mid day. Part of me wanted to go to bed in the nice air conditioning, the other part just said, “Yeah, let’s check it out.”
As soon as I arrived, there was a warm welcome of people offering their chairs and being super friendly. It was the owners wife’s birthday and it was a large celebration. Apparently we picked a good weekend, the area is typically a quiet ghost town just for people to surf and leave.
I headed to the bar and got a beer. I instantly clicked with a nice Filipino that I exchanged a few words on the beach. His name was Kevin and super friendly.
Kevin
Kevin is a Filipino guy from Cebu City. He spent 9 years in Sydney, Australia studying business and engineering. He came back to the Philippines to continue his family business. He seems happy with where is life has been and where it’s going, taking it day by day. A no regrets kind of guy.
I spoke to Kevin for a little bit while Ronja went back to get her sweater from the hotel. The rain made it quite chilling. Then I met Blui, Kevin’s friend from Cebu city. Both of them were tall unlike everyone else. They both seemed very western.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I met a lot of familiar faces. They were all surfing that day, including the Mayor from a nearby town. The Mayor was hilarious and was a riot during karaoke.
I sang a few songs with some help of my new friends. I went from being too tired to go out to not wanting to leave. I had a sudden moment of clarity that we should head back to the hotel for possible surfing the next day.

Enjoying the BEST of LIFE (AZUMI BOUTIQUE HOTEL STAYCATION)
AZUMI BOUTIQUE HOTEL!!!
First of all, I, along with my wife and two kids, would really like to THANK you for the AMAZING and UNFORGETTABLE experience you have given us during our stay! In fact, you made my DAY (my birthday indeed) extra wonderful, to the fullest extent!
I have read reviews about this boutique hotel before we actually decided to book-in and though I found slight negative reviews from other reviewers, I decided to give it a try myself (instead of making impressions from other’s point of views) to experience the stay first hand and to give a personal feedback based from my personal standpoint.
Here is how I rate/review this wonderful hotel after our outstanding 2D/1N staycation (2PM-12NN).

“PLACE/LOCATION”
(Within MADRIGAL BUSINESS PARK near ATC, MOLITO Building along Zapote-Alabang Road)
Coming from Bacoor, Cavite, getting to Azumi is not much of a hard deal (but I have to admit, I am not used to hanging out in Madrigal Business Park/Muntinlupa area so we relied on “Google Map” and of course Manong driver to get here.
Being the most practical person on earth (that’s for real), we decided to use the modest form of public transportation instead of taxi/grab/uber (JEEPNEY alabang route) to get here. We told Manong Jeepney Driver to alight us at Puregold Molito which he is very familiar of (15php fare). Around 15-20 minutes since we left from our place in Bacoor (at 230PM), we finally reached Puregold Molito and from there, I saw this towering skyscraper and because of pictures over the internet and of course with the help of my brother google map, I know to myself right there that we are now standing a few blocks away to our destination for the next 24 hours.
PERSONAL RATING: 10/10 Notes: The hotel is located very near the main road that makes it so much easier to locate. The road to the place is very accessible indeed even to commuters like me.

“ENTRY TO THE HOTEL”
As we took public transportation, we entered through the main lobby of the hotel and were greeted with wide smiles by the security personnel, front desk officers and other staffs even from a distance. I told my wife to wait for me as I proceed to the front desk area to confirm our reservation.
The lady front desk officer greeted me and asked for the details of my reservation. (We booked a Queens room) After giving all the info, she explained to me the house rules in a polite and endearing way which was a thumbs-up for me. Later, she handed me the key card along with wifi tickets and breakfast buffet coupons for two at romulo’s café for the next morning. (note that you need to give a 1k deposit during check in which is fully refundable upon check out). After which, we were directed to the elevator leading us to our room (1015) at the 10th floor.
PERSONAL RATING: 10/10 Notes: The lobby, as well as the interior designs of the receiving area is scented, clean and is very nice. The personnel are trained, polite and courteous to guests.

“THE ROOM”
Because of the various reviews and researches I made before we stayed, we actually know what to expect inside our rooms- from the design, color, even the location and structure of the comfort rooms, etc.
But when we got inside our designated room (Note that the keycards are working efficiently), we got overwhelmed because the room itself is much better in personal than those seen in pictures. The room is already cold inside and everything (mattress, beddings, pillows, etc) seems to be in perfect order.
Here are just some of the NICE things inside the room:
MICROWAVE
SPACIOUS FRIDGE (with soda, beers, drinks, etc)
MINI BAR (of goodies and treats)
BALCONY
GLASS TYPE DOOR/WINDOW OVERSEEING ALABANG AREA
QUEENSIZE BED
BIG SOFA BED (perfect if you have kids and you need personal space with your partner lol)
TOP OF THE LINE FLAT SCREEN TV
AC
WATER HEATER
TELEPHONE
PERSONAL VAULT
CABLE
SINK
WIFI ACCESS (full speed)
Etc etc.
The hotel also offers spa, massage, food orders and many other amenities for which details are placed visibly inside the room. You can also request for HAIR BLOWER, IRON and other personal things that one might need during the stay.
Also, minutes after we got in, the phone rang and it was from the front desk asking if everything in the room is fine and if there is a problem or a request, we were told to call them anytime of the day, 24/7. (HOW SWEET IS THAT?)
PERSONAL RATING: 9/10 Notes: Though everything inside looked great and picturesque, we found that the lock to the glass door leading to the balcony is broken making it essentially dangerous for families who have kids that could sneak around to the balcony easily and might cause serious trouble if left alone (please see below how this has been addressed).
Tumblr media
(pix:ctto)
”STAFF/ ROOM MANAGEMENT”
As mentioned above, we found that the lock of the glass panel leading to the balcony was broken so we URGENTLY called the attention of the front desk officers via phone and was told that they will have someone to check it very soon. Minutes later, we heard a knock on our door and it was a guy from the maintenance team. After tightening up some screws, the door was fixed, good as new, in less than a minute. Minutes after, I found it hard to use the TV/Cable as the channels were preset so again we dialed to the front officers and was advised again to wait in a few minutes as they will again have someone to fix it for us.
Overall, I guess I called to the front desk officers at least 9x during our stay for different inquries/requests such as Hair blower, shuttle service inquiry, extra towels, extra doormats, laundry bags, (etc) even DISHWASHING liquid for our plates (I was asking if they are selling dishwashing liquid instead of us going out to find one and they are so accommodating enough to provide a free one care of the housekeeping team).
Even though we contacted the front desk team a number of times, we didn’t feel any irate reaction from them, but instead, we are being taken cared of accordingly every time we have a request/concern that has to be addressed.
PERSONAL RATING: 10/10 Notes: Staff really know how to handle clients. PERIOD.

“ROOFTOP POOL AREA”
If you have done research before going to AZUMI BOUTIQUE HOTEL, you should know by now that this is one of the highlights of this place. Right after some “instagrammable” shots inside our room, we along with the kids, decided to change clothes and went straight to the pool area located at “PH” (penthouse) to start an afternoon with splashing waters under the seeding of clouds!
When we got there, a personnel who is around to look after the pool area asked about our room number and automatically gave us 3 thick blankets that we can use during our swimming session (we thought you have to bring your own swimming towel that’s why we brought our own and having free usable towels is great so we do not need to bring home wet towels with us). Plus there are ready tables and chairs and also sunbathing pads that you can use to get a tan skin under the blooming direct sunlight!
The pool area is describable in three words: WOW and WOW! Yes, the infinity rooftop salt water pool is HEAVEN brought to earth!
The water is very clear and you can hardly find anything negative with it and because we went there on a Sunday (assuming that it will be a not-so-crowded day because of the work on Mondays), we feel like we own the pool ourselves!
Aside from us, there is only 1 family of 2 using the pool that time that gave us an “empty EDSA” feel like vibe while swimming and enjoying the cool water!
We swam and swam until the sun went down and from here another thrill unfolds.
From the pool at rooftop of the hotel, you can see the lights of glowing ALABANG skyline and also the clear bright stars above. The pool also turned on their blue lightings that gave the pool better scenery, perfect for your profile pictures.
Definitely, I can say that this is one of the BEST pools EVER that you will have to deal with!
PERSONAL RATING: 8/10 Notes: Wondering why I gave it 8/10? Being a warm blooded guy who hates cold environment, the freezing breeze at the rooftops gave me extreme chills. This rate is personal in a sense and has nothing to do with the hotel. Lol. As I’ve said, the pool area is HEAVEN!

“DINNER/OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION/BREAKFAST”
After a day of load and activities, our bellies went empty and we decided to check out the Molito area to try foods over there as we saw a food market nearby. Because of the accessible location of the hotel, we easily made our way to the molito area and even across Alabang Town Center to have our dinner and to buy snacks. (Don’t get us wrong, the foods/menu/minibar inside Azumi are priced fair enough, even lower than most convenience stores, but we pushed our plan to try different foods around the area instead).
Late night came and we finally rested our backs on the soft spacious bed. The bed sheets and blankets smells good even the AC is working outstanding. (But again, I hate cold rooms so I had major chills again under the blanket lol)
Unlike what I read on some reviews (that’s why I do not rely on other’s reviews that much), I NEVER heard any noise coming from the outside going into our room. Even the slightest of a car horn below never went our ears. PLUS, there are also no “lover’s music” (aside from our own. Lol) from the rooms beside us so the night went 100% peaceful and glaringly calm (and extremely chilling of course).
The next morning came and we set our moods to devour the coming Romulo’s breakfast buffet for two. After taking selfies and groupies within the room and the outside world through the balcony, we changed clothes and went to Romulo’s café to enjoy our delicious breakfast buffet.
Honestly, I have been worried that the hotel/romulo’s might charge us for extra person as we have 4 heads (though 1 is still an infant) and the breakfast buffet tickets we have are only for two persons. BUT, as accommodating as ever, they did not charge us any extra charge for the meal my eldest daughter took and that made us more grateful and delighted with how the management deals with customers in this hotel.
Again, though I read some reviews that the breakfast buffet is not good, well, I sincerely CONTEST to that. The food being served in the buffet table are GREAT even the foreigners who we are with seemed to enjoy every bit of crumbs on their plates! From pancakes, to cereals, to rice meals, veggies and breads, all do taste good and we had a FULL tummy right after.
PERSONAL RATING: 10/10 Notes: The variety and the food on the buffet table are appetizing and savoury. We also had a loooong calm, quiet and satisfying night. More, the availability of dining options around the vicinity is really alluring.

(pix:ctto)
“CHECK OUT”
Right after our breakfast we gave ourselves a final hooray to the pool area where we swam under the heat of the morning sun (I LOVE IT!!! NO MORE CHILLZ!!) We were there from 930am to 11am until we decided to get back in our room to prepare our departure from the place we called “OUR OWN HOME” for the rest of the night.
We requested for laundry bags for our soaked/wet clothes and it came to our door steps in less than 3 minutes (that’s what you call customer service). 12nn passed by but we are not yet done with our departure preppies and to my surprise the phone NEVER rang EVEN ONCE to remind us that we are getting overboard. UNLIKE in other hotels, they will never put you in the rush to vacate your room. I believe it is already 1240 when we left our rooms and we never heard any reminder/alarms from them either.
When I approach the front desk lady to check out, the first thing she asked me is “How’s your stay sir?”
“We really had a WONDERFUL time!” I responded. After which, I handed her back the key card and what stricken me the most is the trust they will give you. The lady only asked me if we consumed any food from the mini bar and after I gave my answer she said, thank you sir, I hope to see you again.
Yes, she never bothered to have the minibar checked or even the room itself from any damage or missing item and to me that TRUST to the clients is something you cannot find elsewhere.
Tumblr media
“FINAL SAY”
Definitely, (if only the stars will align perfectly for me once again) I wish to have the same opportunity to come back here with my family soon and see how well things will work out the second time around.
Without a doubt, this HOTEL is truly AMAZING and will go BEYOND your expectation as a guest. Indeed, I recommend this hotel to be part of everyone’s wish list if they would like to go for a nice and soothing staycation!
PS: The writer is a proud “class D-E” individual who works as a typical 8-5 office employee who eats PARES and MAMI for dinner on a weekly basis. The goal of this review is to let everyone know of the overall beauty and convenience this hotel brings and that even lower class individuals are treated equally, like your bosses, in top of the line leisure and accommodation facilities such as Azumi Boutique Hotel.
