I want to tell you about something that has been on my mind. Hear me out if you have a minute. . . . I’m thinking about starting a tuition-free online course for students of herbal medicine. And I’m trying to sort out the feasibility of such a thing, especially in terms of 1). What sort of interest is out there in taking such a course and 2). Who might be interested in helping to teach such a course. I’m imagining a fairly in-depth program involving some basic science instruction (botany, anatomy/physiology/pathology, basic and organic chemistry), as well as the more trade-specific stuff like how to make a tincture and how to conduct an intake interview. Right now this is just an idea, and it would take a while (at least a year) to create the content i’m imagining. . . . The way i see it, poor people, and especially those from socially and economically marginalized communities, are the ones who kept the traditions of herbal medicine in this country going throughout the middle of the 20th century. Now that herbal medicine is popular and even trendy, people from those same communities might never have access to the quality of education on the subject that their wealthier and less socially marginalized peers might have. Having come from one of the most impoverished communities in the country, i think that’s awful. . . . So my hope is that it would be feasible to create a donation-funded, free tuition program that would give people the skills and information they need to prepare them to be really good herbalists. . . . My working title for this project is “the hedge school”, after the secret schools my ancestors and others like them ran in Ireland during the generations where it was prohibited for an Irish person to receive most types of education. . . . A relative here in florida being a medicine woman. I plan on getting into traditional herbalism and learning my mother tongue in the coming years to increase my gifts in healing. As a continuation of my herbal education series, today I focus on the prevalent and delectable dandelion! Dandelions (Taraxacum Officinale or Pu Gong Yi in TCM) are edible both raw and cooked, from flower to root. They do have a bitter flavor which is an indication of their medical uses for the promotion of digestion and appetite stimulation. Keeping in mind dandelions’ high nutrient and antioxidant properties, it may be a fun summer activity to let the kids pick part of their salad in the yard (avoid if the yard has been sprayed for weeds). Dandelion wine, dandelion root coffee, and dandelion flower fritters are just a few tastey ways to use this well known weed. Aside from the fun, Dandelions have a long-standing medicinal use in traditional medicine. The root is known to be a rich source of prebiotic fiber inulin which even modern research indicates may increase movement of your GI tract, acting as a treatment for constipation and indigestion. Additionally, dandelion is known to be a blood thinner, a diuretic, use to reduce inflammation, boost immune responses, and much more. Tobacco native to the Americas used and planted by indigenous people became a cash crop that enriched plantation owners and expanded the slave trade all across the South and into the West Indies particularly Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados. My ancestors...slaves in the Caribbean grew tobacco for their owners. Tobacco also became their medicine. These plants histories are layered much like the history of the people who together they ensured each other’s survival.
