The week that followed running into Yugi really felt like any other week. Seto did opt to work from home to avoid running into the boy, but on more than one occasion the man pulled out his phone with the intention of texting Yugi only to change his mind, stopping himself and deleting whatever meme or paragraph he had drafted. This went on for the entire week.

He didn't talk to Mokuba about any of this, though he was certain his brother knew that something was going on. Mokuba knew, at the very least, that Mutou was working at KaibaCorp now— and Seto had never been very good at keeping secrets from his brother (that is, secrets that weren't meant to keep Mokuba safe or out of trouble).

But finally, the following Monday, Kaiba found himself going through his usual morning routine on autopilot. Workout, shower, coffee, breakfast, news, and finally heading out to the car to go to the office. He wasn't thinking about work or the things he was doing; they took no effort to him. Work and productivity, his day-to-day, was easy. What did take all of his focus was trying to come up with some reason to run into Yugi at work, some excuse to be on the boy's floor. 'I wanted to see you' could either be taken as a sweet and almost romantic gesture, or, could offend him and make him incredibly upset. Seto decided it was just safer to find a legitimate and work-related reason to be there.

Luckily for the KaibaCorp CEO, only shortly after six in the morning did he receive a request from the game developers for Seto himself to come and test their newest game— which he happened to know that Yugi had been playtesting as well. It was honestly nothing short of perfect.

And so, a calendar invitation was sent out to everyone involved in the game to be held from nine until lunch. Enough time for Yugi to get some coffee and have a little bit of prep before seeing him. Seto's name would be right there on the calendar invite. Yugi would have to see it, and have to attend.

It was no surprise that when nine rolled around, half of the attendees were already present with the sole purpose of impressing Kaiba, all of the required gaming tech already set up in the board room. Mutou wasn't there yet, but hopefully he could convince the boy to have lunch with him afterward. Seto slipped into the seat at the head of the table and focused down at his phone, a bored and disinterested look on his face that had the rest of the room muttering to themselves, all hoping that their project wouldn't be a disappointment.

If he were being completely honest with himself, Seto had known for some time the difference between Yugi and the Pharaoh. Where Yami had shone in the darkness, wrought with confidence, Yugi leaned into timidness and humility. They were two halves of the same coin, the two edges that made the perfect blade. It seemed as though Yugi believed that one without the other simply did not make a whole.

Seto knew better.

"You think you're so weak. Here I was thinking that outright calling you pathetic wouldn't help you, but you've essentially beaten me to the punch."

After leaving the television, Seto knelt down with Yugi to pick up his cards. It stung a little, touching the cards - those cards which had been the acting force to his belittlement for so long. But there was something cathartic to it, too. Something empowering.

"You know," He started, handing Yugi a few cards he'd picked up from his side.

"I seem to recall a time where he wanted to go too far. You took over and ended that duel."

"You wouldn't let me fall to my death. I may have anticipated it in order to win, but I've never forgotten that kindness. You showed strength and willpower in order to achieve that end. You went against him in order to save me - and now you're telling me you can't find the strength to live without him."

"Maybe you understand my frustration when all I hear from you is how victimized you are by his leaving. I don't think you realize how far you are from needing someone else to take care of you."

In Seto's mind, this was a clear and objective reality, and to him Yugi needed a great dose of it. It may have been blunt, it may have been brutal, and it would most certainly bring back feelings from an older time - but needs must.

I mean if they couldn’t rely on their deck giving them the exact card they need to turn the situation around when they need it. What would everyone do if there was no supernatural force that let them control their draws?

There is no major supernatural force except maybe at the end of DM or Shining Draw. Ai/Windy's draw from a tornado thing was the Ignis' code intersecting with a metaverse and a game, before anyone jumps me.

What you're seeing is good top decks from good deck construction.

I keep saying this, what you're seeing is Good Deck Construction in the anime's world. Heart of the Cards isn't a supernatural power. It's literally "I'm good at Deck Construction".

I dunno what to tell you, you're basically asking "What would people do if they were bad at building Decks"

"Happy birthday, Seto!" Yugi chimes brightly, though breathlessly as he struggles to tug a Blue Eyes plush twice his size through the door.

He sees the plush before he registers who's holding it. Quite large, even compared to him. In Yugi's arms, it's massive. His first response is to raise a brow, curious as to why the man had deemed it necessary to lug such a large toy around when he could've just gotten something small - or nothing at all. Seto doesn't need gifts.

But the sentimentality of it is... heartwarming. It pulls a small smile from his lips and gets him off of his couch.

He strides over and places a hand on Mutou's shoulder, looking down at him with a mix of amusement and... something else.

"Thank you, Yugi."

Then he reaches through a gap in the door to grab ahold of the stuffed dragon from the other side. He gives it a decent pull, and then another with a little more effort.

It takes a second, but they manage to drag it through. He inspects it with a careful eye and makes sure to play it up a little. As if there were a chance that he wouldn't like it.

Blue eyes flicker back over to the smaller man and he smiles again.

"Very nice. You are aware that you didn't have to get me anything, right? But I..." No, he still can't say that word. "Like it. Thanks."
