weeks 2 & 3: new orientation
your rat is back with an update from the strange new land!
i was settling in from my exhausting journey, but the world didn't want me to get too relaxed. i immediately noticed that the everything around me was so different. the lights, doorknobs and electric plugs were the bizarre cousins of the ones i knew before. people were greeting me on the streets without the mandatory two week "getting to know you" period.
strange fixtures were growing out of the ground. it took all my energy to focus on the moment and every evening i was more tired than i had ever been. but still i marched forward, my curiosity killing my fears. many rats from where i'm from never get a chance like this and i was going to make the most of it.
i braved the terrifying roads and found myself in a store not like any i've been to before. the energy of seasonal festivities built around consumption was overpowering and i found myself craving heart shaped chocolates. i also felt the sting of longing for my otter.
the kind spirits of the store blessed me and my small budget, so i felt comfortable leaving the store with no heart shaped objects. the spirits couldn't remove my yearning, so i walked home with no chocolates nor my otter.
i met more of the local creatures, this seagull was complaining about taxes and how in a sensible society no one should expect hand outs from the government. i left him to his own devices, not wanting to get into an argument with a seagull. they are notoriously bad at debates.
i rarely found any signs helpful. i have never been one to look for signs from others, and this one convinced me of their uselessness. sign does not a wet floor make. i missed otter as i knew they could have made sense of all the signs. they could make new better ones as well.
looking back on my first weeks here, i have to admit that my viewpoint has changed. at first i was confused by nearly every new thing i saw. i am not in the comfort of home here, but the sharp and cutting new is giving way to a more dull familiarity. i am finding the patterns and continuing them with my own behaviour. who knows, by the time i leave, i might be a different rat?
i am enjoying my time here immensely, but it would be that much sweeter if i could see otter. i wish them a very lovely (belated) valentine's day, as they made me the happiest rat on this side of the ocean with their lovely letter. soon i will see them again.
