Hey Savage love your work! Do you have other Ardyn fanfic writers you'd reccomend?

Here's a couple that have popped out to me, in no particular order!

Writing styles, technique, subject etc. will vary from each author. Some may not be everyone's cup of tea. I personally enjoy reading everything. I could care less if said writers are beginners or well seasoned. I see the thing, I consume it. There is always something to learn from everyone that writes fanfic in my opinion.

They have some wonderful Ardyn stories floating on their blog! Their writing style is descriptive and definitely make you feel like you're right there in the scenes. The ones in particular that stand out to me are their Vampire!Ardyn story, & A Sword At Your Throat series. Whatever you end up reading, it's gonna be consistent.

Much like hauntedadagium, this peep is great at expository and description. I love their characterization of Ardyn throughout their A Dream Come True fic. You get to see many nuances of Ardyn that don't get touched upon in other works. Their one shots too with him are cohesive and really hit the emotions.

If you're looking for something dangerous, reallllyyyy spicy and you're into explicit works, they have some well written Ardyn stuff. Their descriptions are carnal all throughout. You won't catch a break or a breath. I'm personally not one to read material like this often cause of my own traumas around sex et. al. but their writing is great.

This darling has some wholesome Ardyn content. I enjoy their headcanons and short stories very much! Definitely a go-to if you're feeling down and you want some comfort work with your favorite baddie. Their one shots are nice!

I just discovered this peep! I read their work nox aeterna. I enjoyed the humor and wit scattered throughout the plot and their twist on certain elements with Ardyn and his backstory. I'm not sure if they have other Ardyn stories, but I hope they continue to write more for him.

They have a variety of everything! You want wholesome Ardyn? Here you go. You want daemonic Ardyn? Here you go. You want smut and fireworks? Here you go. Nuff said. I think this peep tackled just about every genre you could stick Ardyn into. I haven't combed through all their work yet.

I like the unreliable narrator element of their Ardyn story Lay All Your Love on Me. You don't see a lot of those that done well to where you're hooked from beginning, middle, and end. They also have some Ignis work too!

I haven't seen any newer works as of late, but they have some entertaining Ardyn one shots! I like their other FFXV content as well!

There's definitely more that can be added for sure. Hopefully this gives you a jumping off point nonny. Pay them all a visit sometime. I encourage you to keep an open mind!

I'm not sure ^^; I think maybe you mentioned them in the tags of a post a little while ago? I forget which one though

Oh gosh ; o ; Idk which one it might have been so I'll just introduce them one by one. I never talk about them here for some reason (lack of energy >.> ) so let me shamelessly talk about them now. Under read more because of length.

Currently I have 3 OCs for Skyrim

Freya Thornheart - a mage and a scholar, willingly possessed by a demon/spirit named Saryn (he jokingly calls himself The Passenger from time to time), he's given her magical powers in exchange of her being a host for him and letting him get to know the world while they travel together. She's not a Dragonborn, she joins the College of Winterhold and the Thieves Guild (because she loves all sorts of trinkets, baubles and jewelry so why not get more), she's skilled in Alchemy, Destruction, Conjuration and Restoration magic and uses 1H swords or staves in battle.

Morrigan - a vampire, she was turned against her will while vampires attacked her when she was collecting ingredients and herbs for healing potions near her family farm outside of Windhelm. She is, or rather wanted to be, a healer, skilled in Restoration magic which she studied briefly in CoW. She wanted to open a shop and a clinic in Windhelm and help other people but had to flee after she was turned. Many years have passed since that time and she finally accepted her fate when life threw another challenge at her - she became the Last Dragonborn.

Circe - she's (yet another, surprise, surprise!) a mage. Shortly after her 16 birthday she left Whiterun to study in CoW. Ever since she was a little girl she wanted to join the Companions but her parents persuaded her not to because they were afraid it would be too dangerous. She discovered she has a talent for magic and her parents thought it would be wise to send her to College, in hopes that she would learn some helpful spells. Circe however still wanted to be a fighter so she decided to study to become a spellsword (idk if they do that in CoW but oh well, headcanons!) Once she turned 20 she left the College to become an adventurer. In Falkreath she met Lucien who became her closest friend and a traveling companion. The two of them began their adventure and shortly after met Freya and Morrigan 👀

There's a reason all 3 studied in CoW and I'm planing on somehow making it work during the College questline.

And one last of for FFXV, Lilith (I loved that name so much that I used it for most of my characters and eventually started using it for myself :P ), she's Ardyn's ex-wife but the love is still there 👀 Their story together and her backstory are still very much a WIP, I never shared anything about her and she mostly lives in my head rent free.

Lilith Lucis Caelum - she's Ardyn's ex wife, she's an artist, owns an art gallery she uses to display her own painting the works of other artists. It's basically a big fat AU where Ardyn is still Ardyn, still immortal and possessed by demons but he's also a part of Royal Family. I really need to make this story work somehow and finally start working some short things I always wanted to.

I used to have some characters for Dragon Age but never really fleshed them out. Might do it one day.

Maybe a small prompt that requires no story, just bullet points of fun with no connection will help? I noticed in the discord the gif of Ardyn Extra Izunia (tm) he is wearing a spotted cloak… like a coeurl skin. It made me imagine Selkie AU where Niflheim get Nyx’s pelt. What changes in that case?

That's... wow. That's an idea.

Hmmm.

My first question here was: How the heck would Niflheim get their hands on Nyx' pelt? Then the story ideas started rolling in right as I went to bed.

So, this would take place at the invasion of Galahd. At least to begin with. Because that's the only time I see a Niff getting their hands on Nyx' pelt. Maybe Nyx was taken prisoner and one of the human Niff officers liked the pelt and took it for himself. Nyx eventually broke out of course, but his pelt was nowhere to be found.

Angst and consequences ensure. Because without his pelt Nyx is slowly falling apart.

When they have to leave Galahd, it breaks another part in Nyx. Especially since his mother and sister don't make it. He barely pieces himself together enough to be eligible for the Kingsglaive. But he needs his pelt back. He knows it's only a question of time before he fully breaks without it.

Crowe and Libertus and the others do what they can. But they know it's not enough. They cannot replace the missing part of Nyx' soul and it grates.

It makes them hate Niflheim even more than they do in canon.

Drautos keeps a careful eye on all of them. Because they're all so reckless it borders on suicidal. He does not really understand waht is going on, but the longer he watches, the more he sees the desperation to his Glaive's actions. The growing despair.

Titus Drautos does not know what's going on, but it makes him think.

And when he sees Nyx one late evening in the Glaive's Headquarters, trying to hide in a shadowy corner, trembling and unresponsive, lightning cracking his skin open, he begins to understand.

And considers.

Meanwhile in Niflheim that officer sold the pelt to an auction house because he needed money. A noble acquired it. White coeurl pelts are exceedingly rare. It gets put on a place of pride in the noble's home.

When that noble holds a ball, Ardyn is there. Ardyn has to be there and is not happy about it. The noble is a self absorbed idiot and none of his 'trophies' he got anywhere else but the auction house.

Ardyn knows this, but he has to play nice, so he smiles as the noble gives his guests a tour through his collection, ending with his most exquisite piece. The white coeurl pelt.

Seeing it steals Ardyn's breath away. He knows what it is. Knows which Clan it belongs to. There is a feel of magic surrounding it that is unmistakeable. And this pelt has been separated long enough from its owner that he can feel the magic breaking and cracking at the edges. It is a true wonder the owner isn't dead yet.

This pelt should not stir soemthing awake deep within Ardyn. A memory. Old and thought forgotten.

But he remembers the group of people he met by the Solheimr ruins in the north of Cleigne. A man and three children.

Ulrics the man had called them, gaze frond and protective.

And when Ardyn had looked again there had not been three children wrapped in furs playing at the shores of the lake, but three white coeurl cubs.

Ardyn remembers this and the stories his mother told him (and his brother) when he had been a child. About a people blessed by magic ancient and alien. About creation and Chaos and the people brave enough (stupid enough) to dabble in it.

Ardyn remembers all this and the world shivers as he tilts his head and smiles.

There is a debt he owes. Old and long forgotten by all but him. And if the line is still alive... well.

(Ardyn is assured in the flighty memory of humanity. But the Galahkari have always defied all expectations, he will come to learn.)

Who is your favorite character who you do not write?

From XV, that’d have to be Ardyn Izunia. I love the character and his backstory, but I just... don’t feel like I could really do him justice? I’m afraid if I did write him, he’d be very one or two note and that’s it.

And in general, it’s N’jadaka (Erik Stevens/Killmonger) from the MCU. I really loved his portrayal by Michael B. Jordan, he was funny, he was vulnerable, he was a force of nature. The problem is that I am not Black and I’m not saying that people aren’t allowed to write other races ever- That’s not the problem here.

The problem is that Erik’s Black diaspora is such a huge part of his character and motivations and as someone who has Asian diaspora, I can certainly feel similar to him and understand a similar pain- but it’s NOT THE SAME. And I’d rather that Black people with diaspora talk about their experiences with growing up not knowing anything about your family origins, barely knowing anything about where you DO live but never being able to FORGET you’re a perpetual outsider to white Americans, etc. I don’t want to disrespect the Black-American experience by like projecting my own experiences onto Erik as if they’re at all the same kind of thing, because it’s not.

And it’s not a contest to see ‘whose experience was worse’, I’m just saying that since I’m not Black, I feel like it’d be cheap and disrespectful of me to talk and roleplay about Black diaspora.

How long have you been rp'ing?

Like.. over 20 years? I started roleplaying on aim when I was BARELY a teenager (which is dangerous), but since I was heavily bullied it was my only source of social interaction.

Are there characters you wish you could write?

Weirdly enough, I have kinda wanted to try Genesis Rhapsodos. And I am certain if I DID the fandom would go fucking apeshit since he gets a bad rep for being based off of Gackt and ‘a unnecessary insertion into ff7′s perfect lore’ (LOL) and because I would headcanon him as being on the autistic spectrum- in my experience, mainline fandom hates it when you so much as IMPLY someone might be autistic or only make CERTAIN characters possibly autistic coded.

... I want to RP him EVEN MORE now because I am absolutely FUELED by spite and coffee.

Headcanon: The Royal Houses (Worldbuilding)

This Headcanon may appear in The Two Brothers, I’m not too sure yet since I’m still script writing. When I get around to Ardyn’s backstory, this will definitely show up though. This was a HC on my to do list. I’ve mentioned before that FFXV did a piss poor job about explaining the royal families linked to the Lucis Caelums (and Ignis sadly got the brunt end of this since we don’t know anything about the poor guy). So... this is my HC trying to make sense of that chaotic mess. I’ve used 15 royal families because well... FFXV and I didn’t want to get too overly detailed since of course Insomnia would likely have room for more royalties, but I crunched it down to what I think Somnus would be going for in his quest to establish the Lucian dynasty at the time.

Each Lucis Caelum may not always have all of these royals houses filled at a given time given the state of their reign. Short of the Shield and Hand of the King, there is no age or gender restrictions for the other houses. I only listed the names of some houses based on what I could find in the source material. If a house doesn’t have a name, then it just whatever I make up based on the fanfiction I’m writing at the time.

Guardian (Shield) of the King / Leader of the Crownsguard - House Amicitia. The King's Guardian, personal protector and friend that follows the Lucis Caelums each generation. They operate the Crownsguard, the elite military arm that directly protects the Lucian Royal Family.

Hand of the King /Advisor / Royal Librarian - House Scientia : Unlike the Shield of the King, the Hand of the King (HotK) has a more intimate knowledge of the King and bond with them from childhood to their ascension of the throne. This title encompasses many aspects of the Kingdom and the HotK’s usually are a “jack of all trades” in order to offer their honest input in important decisions for how the King is to rule.

Maintenance/Mechanic - House Sophiar : Responsible for the general upkeep of any royal vessels or equipment that the King uses in his daily life. They are knowledgeable in various engineering techniques and can usually fix any complex machinery without fail.

Kingsglaive - Inventors of advanced weaponry such as the crossbow and machine guns. This military sector is focused on protecting the Lucian people from domestic and foreign threats that interfere with the Kingdom. The Kingsglaives are run by another house, but reports directly to House Amicitia.

Hunters - Hunters work outside of the Cidadel and protect the peace and promote relations with other nations in Eos as the “public” military branch. Their specialities are traditional weapons like swords, polearms, and axes used to bring down daemons. Hunters are run by another House usually outside of the royal family, but reports directly to House Amicitia .

Royal Guard (Top Secret / Special OPs) - Responsible for military strategy. They operate in secret and deal with threats to the crown quietly. They are the caretakers of the monstrous Adagium. They record their operations in code that only few outside of the Scientia House know how to break that is avaliable in the royal library. This sector is run by another house, but reports directly to House Amicitia.

Medical Sector - Responsible for the well being of the royal family using medical practices and curative spells. This house has close ties to the Tenebraen Royal Family.

Ritual Chamberlain - Organizes and oversees Lucian holidays and rituals that the Royal Family participates in every year. They keep meticulous records of the current King and transcribe the events in their lives to be preserved in the Royal Library.

Magic Arms Sector (Public and Special OPs) - Responsible for researching and developing magical techniques used by all branches of the military. This includes crystal magic and environmental magic. They also research magic phenomena like the starscourge and study the Astrals.

Chef - House Armaugh : Responsible for gaining knowledge of cuisines within Eos. Regularly cook for the royal family and in charge of preparing meals for gatherings and special events within the Citadel.

Diplomat / International Affairs - Oversees specific rules, regulations, rituals, or tasks within Eos. Run by another house, but reports directly to House Amicitia.

State/Internal Affairs - Oversees and enforces specific rules, regulations, or tasks within the Kingdom

Bookkeeper - Oversees the financial data within the Kingdom

Economist - Responsible for monitoring domestic and foreign products and their utilization within the Kingdom. Many Economists hail from the Accordo region.

Kingdom Planning/Development - Responsible for designing, planning, implementation, and construction of architecture throughout Insomnia.

putting these under a cut since they’re getting kinda long…

Fav thing about them: i really like his sort of “role” in noct’s entourage. he’s not got an official position like ignis and gladio, he’s just a friend of noct’s, but because of this i feel like he kinda brings out the more human side to all of them. his upbeat, somewhat childish personality reminds them that they’re all still just people, despite all the shitty responsibilities dumped on them throughout the story due to noct’s position (especially for noct!!) and that they’re “not just bodyguards, but brothers”. imagine how much harder it woulda been for them all to get through things if he hadn’t been there to keep their spirits up.

Least fav thing: 1) altho i like his plotline/character (in the game, not brotherhood) i feel like the way the lines were written, specifically the rooftop scene with noct and the part in the keep, feel kinda forced and unnatural. like the way i see it, a normal real life person wouldn’t have said those sorta things outright, or at least not worded it in the way he did. like it gets the ideas + his personality across sure, but not in a very natural way, and it kinda sorta ruins the scenes a little bit. 2) now that i mentioned brotherhood, that reminds me: i also dislike his backstory there. altho i am proud of him for being self-motivated and all that, it was the same with that one dude in k project where they just made a fat character become really skinny for seemingly no reason. it’s just unnecessary and kinda uncomfortable.

Fav Line: ???

brOTP: boy squad, him/cindy, him/aranea

OTP: boy squad, him/ardyn (but only kismesissitude like. for the angst)

nOTP: (monogamous) prom/ptis, prom/nis, prom/ptio (i tend to think of noct being the sort of…“center” of their relationship since they’re all tied to him, so im a little more ok with shipping him with individual bros than prom. with prom it just feels off), him/cindy, him/aranea, him/cor (romantically)

Random headcanon: this isn’t smth i’d been thinking about for a while, i literally just thought of it while typing up a previous answer: growing up shy (and still having some of those lingering insecurities) made him more sympathetic and makes him notice when others are left behind + try to make sure everyone feels included. it’s part of the reason he sticks so close to ignis when he’s blind. he knows what it’s like to be unnoticed and forgotten and therefore tries his best to make sure others don’t go through the same thing.

Unpopular opinion: dislike when ppl portray him as overly-blushu and nervous around noct, while noct is the confident, cool headed one in the relationship. if anything noct (or even better both of them!!) is the awkward nervous one who doesn’t even know what flirting is.

Song I associate: already said “must have been the wind” on noct’s, but “mind is a prison” and “demons” (especially this one!!!!) by alec benjamin are also very good prompto/promptis songs (linking them bc pls listen to his music am begging u i love it so much). i’d been meaning to draw fanart of the music vid for “mind is a prison” but with prompto bc i love him + the song and the music video is really pretty, but i never got around to it.

Afterthoughts of FFXV’s 2nd anniversary stream

Okay, so... it’s taken me a while due to a mix of having blurted out my thoughts of how I lived it all on Twitter not much time after the stream (you can read it here, if you’re interested: https://twitter.com/Eirenare/status/1060552739044950022 ) and how much it stings to still think about it, but...

Welp, it was about time I said something about it here.

I’m going to go first with the cons and then the pros...

~ CONS OF THE STREAM ~

I still can’t believe Square-Enix higher-ups took away from us 3 of the 4 promised DLCs (among who knows what amount of stuff beside FFXV that we’ll probably never know about). I just still can’t believe it. With that, they:

— robbed us of and Lunafreya of the spotlight she finally was going to get (because, as much as I love Kingsglaive and she’s a badass there, Lunafreya certainly needed more fleshing out)

— robbed us of the opportunity of kicking asses with Aranea, a freaking badass dragoon knight

— robbed us of seeing more Niflheim, and maybe of seeing Tenebrae

— maybe even robbed us of having Loqi as partner of Aranea if my theory would have been right, or seeing more Ravus, and overall probably seeing more of the other characters of Niflheim

— robbed us of the opportunity of seeing Noctis challenge a freaking fucking cruel fate he didn’t deserve and the cruel fates of the others, to get them all a deserved happy ending

— robbed us and all the characters of said happy fate they deserved after all the amount of shit they had to put up with... which means we may have also seen Nyx and the others alive and happy too

It just STINGS. SO. MUCH. It makes me feel sad, angry, annoyed, frustrated.

And it strikes me as just SO dumb to cancell these DLCs. They were in production, there was already money invested in them, AND they were going to sell for sure, given their content (more Ardyn backstory? THAT LITERALLY WON THE SURVEY. Playing as Aranea? HIGHLY requested it. Lunafreya getting more fleshed out? HIGHLY requested and was 2nd on the survey, and it was HIGHLY needed. Noctis fighting to give a happy ending to his people? Don’t know how much it was requested, but it was very interesting AND the characters deserved it)... I mean: of all the things they’ve cancelled, couldn’t Square-Enix’s higher-ups AT LEAST leave FFXV in peace and let it end as intended??

They’ve pissed off SO many people with these cancellations... A TON of us. And with reason. It was just disgusting.

I H O P E that, as Tabata’s team mentioned, they can at least tell us the stories of the cancelled DLCs in any other ways (anime, manga, online written chapters, whatever it is), but I still don’t want to get my hopes too high because, you know... Because, well, if the CEO and the rest of the higher-ups decided to cancell DLCs that had been advertised for MORE THAN 1 YEAR, and say it in a 2nd Anniversary stream, anything can happen.

And this may feel like it stings a fuckton for us, but the worse part it was Tabata and his team who took it: imagine working with such excitement to make these DLCs come true, to then, after some time in production, being told “nope”. It must have stung SO MUCH to them. They’ve been working to give all of us fans a ton of content after release, specially content that’s been asked for, and what they get is a kick in the groin.

I really hope Tabata has all the luck in this world with his next projects, free from the shackles of a company that’s beeing doing lame for a long time and it just won’t stop doing lame...

And here I hope the actual CEO is replaced, and that the structure of Square-Enix changes. Because if they don’t, I think they’ll be fucked up sooner than later. Also, the dream: all of the amazing people that’s left Square-Enix, making a good company together.

I’d also would like to say that I’m VERY thankful towards Tabata. He’s done an amazing job, and it stings to think that he’s seeing FFXV ending like this, without him being allowed to finish it as he would have liked it. I mean, you saw his last interview, not much time before the 2nd Anniversary stream (I think it was 1-2 months ago)? He was SO delighted talking about his intentions with the DLCs... Not to mention that, if I remember well, he specially wanted to see Lunafreya’s DLC happen, not just because of giving it to the fans, but because he really wanted that a ton.

If Tabata’s resignment really wasn’t him being pressed to go out, I have to say I’d totally understand that he’d go away from the company on his own, given what I’ve said before...

So, thank you for everything Tabata, and the same goes for your team. I wish you all the best of lucks. FFXV has been absolutely crucial to me these last 2 years and it’s given me SO MUCH and helped me so much... This journey’s forever going to be etched in my heart and soul.

And, well... with this, I’d like to move to the good things of the stream.

~ PROS OF THE STREAM ~

Episode Ardyn has me so, SO hyped. Like... Damn, it looks amazing. That trailer alone gave us scenes, gave us a bit of gameplay, and if I was trembling while watching the stream (although I was watching it live in JP so I had to rely on Twitter to know what was going on)? That became SHAKING. I even took my hand to my mouth in a fist and bite a bit on my knuckles.

Just... Poor Ardyn. It was my headcanon that he’d been imprisoned for such an ungodly amount of time at Angelgard, but I couldn’t foresee that they’d show him HANGING FROM CHAINS PIERCING HIS BODY (that was hard, and unexpected in the sense of that scene may be enough to raise the rating even without blood). As in, 2.000 years alone is horrible, 2.000 years alone in a cell is worse, 2.000 years alone in a cell after such traumatic events is even worse, but 2.000 years alone HANGING LIKE THAT?

Oh boy. My poor Ardyn. I wanna hug him even more now...

However, on another tone: now we know how his body really looks like underneath so many layers of clothing, and that HE HAD A PONYTAIL. That ponytail BLESSED ME. I love characters with ponytails SO much.

Also: YOUNG REGIS AND YOUNG VERSTAEL AND OMG S O M N U S . AND more explorable Insomnia AND during daytime? Sign me up. And the implications of the foreshadowing with Prompto, among other good amount of foreshadowing... A LOT of things make sense now, and I’m sure a lot more about Ardyn’s behavior and words will make sense when the DLC launches. And THE POSSIBILITIES. Imagine if we get to know or, best, see something about Noctis’ mother, Aulea? Or Noctis as a baby? Or, depending on if the DLC features different years, maybe even the Kingsglaive or others? I’m just SO excited.

Maybe they’ll do like they did with Episode Ignis and somehow put multiple endings on Episode Ardyn, too...? Hummm... *thoughtful*

ALSO: anime short movie of Ardyn. ANIME SHORT MOVIE OF ARDYN. I used to say wishfully that what if they were doing an anime of him, AND THEY ARE. Holly. And it’s about the PAST, the way they worded it. Can’t wait for the teasers in December 15th and January!

Imagine just how much hyped I was watching the trailer that it easily overcame my sadness, anger and annoyance of the cancellations for like 2 hours.

Other good things, little but nice, are the FFXIV collab and the clothings for the chocobros (specially Noctis with the cat ears and tail omg, hi at long last Nyactis), and the fact that they haven’t said they’ve cancelled the level editor, which means we could maybe still be getting it... Here’s to hoping.

So, in the end: I’m both in sorrow and excited about FFXV. Sorrow because it’ll end way sooner than expected and not in the expected way, and sorrow because of the cancellations, but excited about Episode Ardyn and its anime prologue.

More of Ardyn’s Backstory in the Arranged Marriage AU

So, anyone familiar with my other AUs will know that I headcanon Somnus as a decade younger than Ardyn, and so Ardyn’s nephew is only about a year old when Somnus betrays Ardyn.

That’s not entirely the case in the Arranged Marriage AU.

Ardyn’s injury in the chocobo fall prevents him from having biological children, remember? That makes the Solheimr and Lucian nobles nervous about the succession, so to reassure them, Somnus marries younger than he does in my Fisher King and Ardyn in Paradise AUs (and not to Kalliope, sorry @distressedherbalist), right when he comes of age at twenty.

His son is born around ten months after the marriage, so Somnus is twenty and Ardyn is thirty.

Ardyn, I think, began his healing journeys a little over a year later, and it took a long time to cover the entirety of two continents, so I’m going to say at least five years, accounting for returning periodically to address the affairs of ruling, travel time, necessary rest time increasing as he became ill, and the sheer number of people involved.

So Somnus’ son was six or seven when the betrayal happens. Which was a huge blow to both Ardyn and his nephew, because Ardyn is good with kids and they were close.

All of which is to say that when they meet, Noctis strongly reminds Ardyn of his nephew, and it is sad and sweet and utterly adorable.

Villain interpretations and all that stuff...

In which I discuss some pretty intense things. Mostly regarding Ardyn as a rapist and various ways people choose to interpret him. If that kind of discussion offends you, probs best to skip this. :)

Okay, so... this is gonna seem flippant, but whenever I hear people in fandom say “Ardyn is NOT a rapist! He would NEVER!”, what it kind of sounds like is this.

Listen. Rape is bad. Ain’t nobody here disagreeing with that. But you know what else is bad? Murder. Torture. Kidnapping. Genocide. Facilitating the production of an entire clone/magitek army to take over the world. Y’know… all those things Ardyn has actually explicitly done in canon. Those are all bad things. And that makes sense… because as fascinating and layered as Ardyn is as a character (and my GOD I want more of his backstory, because I just KNOW there is so much Square haven’t told us), you know what else he is? He’s a villain. He’s a Bad Guy. And Bad Guys very often (and demonstrably so in this case) do Bad Things.

Rape isn’t necessarily morally more evil or reprehensible than murder or genocide. They’re all absolutely horrible, nasty, evil things, but because sex has been so demonized and vilified in media (specially for women), rape is often seen as the ultimate act of evil, even over things like murder, torture, etc…

I mean… look how many horror movies exist. Slasher moves are a cult favourite. The Saw franchise is one of the most popular horror movies series of the entire genre. Blood and guts and gore and death and suffering. But we totally accept that. Horror movies are fine. I mean…. They depict nasty, evil, horrible things. They are full of Bad People doing Bad Things, but we’re happy to watch that and treat it as entertainment.

But Rape in media is often considered The Ultimate Evil. You can kill and torture and disembowel and we can continue eating our popcorn, but as soon as a Bad Character rapes someone, they’ve crossed an invisible moral line.

Rape is very often used as a tool in media to demonstrate Evil. Like... “We want this character to be Evil. We want everyone to hate him. What should we make him do so that there is absolutely no way he could be seen as redeemable in our audience’s eyes? Oh yes.... rape someone.”

It’s actually a pretty lazy tool because it takes no creative effort on the writer’s part, but it works, because this “fear” of sexuality is so ingrained.

Again, it’s because sex has been demonized. There’s a reason a lot more people have visceral negative reactions to “Rape” as a thing, than to “Murder” as a thing. Even though murder is also terrifying and Bad.

Now, I’m not saying Ardyn is a rapist. That would be a stupid statement. We’ve been given no canon evidence of that at all, and whatever kind of Bad Things he may or may not do in private is totally up to personal character interpretation. BUT!!!! Man, is he presented as one of the most sexual characters in the game. He kind of oozes sensuality and sexual confidence. It’s in the way he speaks, the way he moves, the sultry gaze… even certain phrases. “Oh… you’re such a tease.” He is designed very obviously to make the player feel uncomfortable (or excited) in a very specific way.

There is a REASON he has such a fanbase. He is a sexy, domineering, powerful character. He’s handsome and charismatic and his voice is almost like a purr sometimes.

And he spends a lot of his time very deliberately getting in the bro’s personal space. So far it’s been the most obvious with Prompto, but he gets all up in Noct’s space, too – and he’ll probably do the same to poor Iggy in Episode Ignis.

Regardless of whether or not he’d actually go through with anything, he very much exudes sexual threat. Think about how you’d feel if someone so much taller and broader than you stepped into your space the way he does here. Or here. Or here. It’s the kind of thing people discuss when they talk about Rape Culture.

Your headcanons are your own. If you write or RP Ardyn in any way and you don’t want to headcanon him as a rapist, that is completely 100% okay. If thinking or talking or writing about rape makes you feel upset or uncomfortable in any way for any reason, that is also totally okay and valid. RP and fandom should be about enjoying yourself and absolutely nobody should force you to look at or experience things that make you uncomfortable.

However, if someone does headcanon Ardyn as the kind of person who might do that, y’know what…? That’s also a perfectly valid reading of a sexualized villain. And that headcanon is their own, too.

Decrying it as stupid or ‘completely OOC’ is you imposing your morality on a fictional Bad Guy. And that’s kinda shitty, too.

Basically, fictional characters are fictional, and you can headcanon whatever you want. As long as we’re all playing nicely with each other and not forcing our headcanons on other people or their characters, it’s chill.

Ardyn Relationship Headcanons Part One

So this is going to be in parts, and here is the first one! Thanks to

Ardyn is pretty damn hard to get close to.

Can’t really blame him though with his backstory. Plus there is also the fact he’s probably watched all his friends and loved ones die. A lot.

I’m guessing that close to the first century he learned to not get close to people. He is totally the best at making people they know him, when in reality...you know crap about him.

When he first hears about your little crush on him, he thinks it’s cute.

That’s it. Just cute. It’ll end soon enough.

Until you are actually trying to woo him.

Then he’ll try to nip that in the bud. He won’t be mean, but he will be a little short. Not in a lose his temper kind of way, but give short answers, he won’t give details. Just quick precise answers and that’s that. If that doesn’t work, he’ll just start ignoring you and will go out of his way to not run into you.

It’s a little mean, but as I have said, can you blame him? Who wants to get their heart broken like that again if you can prevent it?

BUT! If you somehow manage to talk to him and slightly get through to him, which takes time and patience (A lot of patience), he will relent a little. And he will insist on taking it slow.

And I mean slow. Paint may dry faster.

He’s honestly just a bit scared, though you won’t be able to tell that with how well this man can carry himself and just act like nothing's wrong.

He’s also tearing himself in two because he does like you and wants to know you, but all his past experience is screaming at him to stop this right now before things get too out of hand and you both get hurt.

He really did swear off caring and getting close to people. But then you came along.

Instructions:

To celebrate a year of FFXV and the end of the first year of updates, let’s spread the FFXV love! I haven’t seen a tag meme like this for FFXV yet, so I decided to make one. If you see this and want to, copy/paste this list and share what your favorite things about FFXV are.

Favorite Chocobro:

Ignis. Not gonna lie, I started with Gladio and still have major thirst for him (the car pushing scene? Yes) but Ignis with his sassy intelligence, nuanced body language, and beautiful voice acting stole my heart pretty quickly. (I play with English VAs but have listened to some of his Japanese VA and it's also wonderful). He is many things I am (nerd, mom friend, quietly passionate about stuff) and am not (sculpted god who can do backflips), and I find that very appealing. Also he reads queer to me and I enjoy that too. (YMMV don't yell at me just my headcanon!) Thirst wise though, it's true, the other two crept into my tent too, sneaky beaky like, and I'm not kicking them out.

Favorite Guest Party Member (including Ravus and Libertus from DLC):

Aranea. She is the badass you wanna be and be with. Also dragoons rule as a general matter.

Favorite Minor Character(s):

Regis (does he count as minor?) He pulled at my heartstrings so hard and was just the kindest, bravest dad.

Favorite Villain:

I'm a sucker for a sexy voice, so yeah. Ardyn. Also I do have a weakness for smirkers.

Favorite Kingsglaive Character:

Nyx. Crowe would have been a contender but she didn't get enough screen time. That scene where he's playing with fire? swoon. Also I dig his hairdo and backstory.

Favorite Astral/Divine Being:

Gentiana/Shiva. Because I'm superficial (that's probably obvious at this point) and girl is STACKED. I also loved how Gentiana is her the whole time. Also also also, and let me not get on a huge tangent about this, but you really *see* the effect summoning her has on Noct. He's cold, and he looks like it hurts. I thought they could have done better in the game with showing the toll the armiger weapons and summons take. There is an excellent fic I read somewhere that fleshes this out. I will find it and reblog it because it's exactly what I wanted from the story.

Favorite Character Overall:

Iggy. He's just undeniable. Also after the DLC with his hair down? Yes please.

If I HAD to make it someone different- Gladio. He is more nuanced than people realize, I think. When he hollered at Noctis on the train, I remembered all the times I felt like I had failed miserably, couldn't fix it, and so yelled at someone else over something smaller. Yeah, it doesn't make you feel better and probably isn't a good character trait. But I didn't find it unrealistic. *shrug*

Favorite Weapon:

I'm gonna copy GG a *bit* and say Ardyn's armiger. Because watching all those weapons he got stole over the years fan out was pretty majestic, and added to the story. Also his reaper scythe was cooooool.

Favorite Weapon you can actually fight with? Ragnarok or Iggy’s frost daggers.

Favorite Location:

Zegnautus Keep. I know I'm weird but I love industrial creepy.

Favourite Quest/Questline/Hunt:

I really enjoyed climbing Ravatogh with the boys. Outdoorsing is fun, and the area was neat looking. Also, dragons. (nerd)

Favorite Boss:

Ravus. His story and conflict are really compelling. And the whole vampire-era-Tom-Cruise thing he has going on doesn't hurt either.

Favorite Monster/Monster Family/etc:

Iron and Red Giants. They look super cool at night. Also, once I reached the point in the game where I could swagger around at night without being afeared, it was really fun. (Iggy was like "we can drive at night now" and I'm all DAMN RIGHT WE CAN!) Also, bonus Aranea drop-in opportunity.

Favorite Song:

Can’t choose just one.

There is this really great music that plays sometimes after a dungeon that I haven’t been able to find the title of on any of the OST track lists. I love it though.

Favorite Boss Theme:

Invidia and Ardyn’s theme

Favorite Non-Episode DLC/Update/Event:

Assassin's Creed Festival. I disproportionately enjoy jumping off high things and do it in almost every game, sometimes to my peril, because I'm a weirdo. So that was super satisfying. Also Prompto's "the prince of garbage," Noct mocking Iggy’s "new recipeh" line, and Iggy's adorable complaints at how revealing the costumes are. LOVE.

Favorite Episode DLC:

Squenix took my favorite character and made him even hotter? Yeah, Episode Ignis pls. Also I love angst. And I am enjoying the gameplay too.

I liked the two other episodes too though. Gladio's story isn't quite as compelling, but it felt good to smash stuff and be a big badass. And Prompto's story made me cry, and also made me feel like maybe I can actually play shooters?

Other Favorites of Note:

Killing the final boss at the end of Episode Prompto. It was pretty awesome to beat something that large from the back of a snowmobile.

Cindy. *sighs dreamily* I also enjoyed the little snippets of backstory and development they gave her (more would have been great too). She's more than just a pretty everything.

Fave Things to Do:

Chocobo riding. It's just so cute.

Get the boys all grubby and dirty and then take them somewhere nice to sleep

‎olllldddeerr Chocobros. So attractive!

‎link strikes. I love all the little animations.

‎listen to music from some of my other fave FF games in the car

cute car animations (My favorites are Who Farted and Shut Up Prompto) I totally brake check Noctis when he sits his irresponsible ass on the back of the car too. I'll never admit to him that he does look pretty cool up there.

Going to murder that giant snake down in Crestholm Channels. That dungeon was overall fun.

Hi friend! I’m sorry this is so late *sweats in Spanish* I’m horrible about answering my asks these days WHOOPS but, um, thank you so much for the compliment :3 I can’t remember which fic you’re referring to at this point, though lol

Let’s see. My favorite angsty headcanon. Well besides Ignis literally willing to sacrifice his life for Noctis (because that’s actual canon now), it would probably be Ardyn suffering two millennia of maddening loneliness. I mean, that much crazy doesn’t happen overnight, y’know? It’s so tragic to think about how his mind twisted and warped over the course of all those years. I would love to - someday, not now bc i’m overwhelmed with projects - delve into his backstory and give him the attention he really deserves.

I love Ardyn okay, I LOVE HIM

But maybe Square Enix will give us some good content in the new year *fingers crossed* - and we’ll have even more angst to wallow in because they haven’t tortured us enough with these boys :’)

I don't actually know about your opinion on Ardyn in general, please tell me it

I think Ardyn is a great villain, and I think his potential for shenanigans is gloriously high. I have a tonne of stupid headcanons about what a 2000 year old troll would get up to- for example, I fully believe he goes down to Gilgamesh’s cave every century or so with a picnic just to fuck with his old Shield.

Or that he always learns the current slang of any given time just so that he can know how to best misuse it.

Or that he has several secret identities as renowned historians just so that he can publish books with the wrong information (after forging his own evidence that looks basically right because he was THERE, he knows what he’s going for).

Or that he was either the one who personally dropped baby Prompto into Insomnia (just to see what would happen), or that he happened to leave the right doors unlocked and did everything short of actually telling the unidentified Lucian where to find the babies.

I don’t have any personal interest in shipping him, but I’ve read a few interesting fics with various characters. He has a lot of potential and I am very interested in seeing his backstory.

Fav thing about them: ..i’m going to take this as “list the reasons you like him”. first off he’s a daddy. he’s an entertaining villain in that he always just seems to be having so much fun being evil, which i always like in a villain. he’s like handsome jack only way less charming and Sexy™ and with smaller dick energy. his animations and voice are cool (most of the time). his backstory is p interesting and i feel bad for him, though not any more than i do anyone else in the story. and his gameplay is fun! his dlc is my 2nd fav to play after ignis :3Least fav thing about them: sometimes his voice acting n stuff can be..not great. he’s good at the low intimidating voice, but doesn’t seem to do screaming very well which kinda makes it hard to take some scenes in his dlc seriously :( and the first part with aera is just hard to watch cuz, i know it’s tryna show him like “look at the person he used to be! he was once sweet and happy and in love and now look what he’s become”, but god it’s so cheesy, it’s like watching a hallmark movie. i’m sure there was a better way to show his character than that.Fav line: luna: “when the prophecy is fulfilled, all in thrall to darkness shall know peace.” ardyn: “how sweet...but please lady lunafreya, you first.”OTP: ardynoct, ardyn/ifrit (large boyfriend!!)brOTP: ardyn/ifrit, other than that ???nOTP: him and aera, him and verstael (i don’t like either of those characters and the relationship dynamics just feel dull :/)Random headcanon: i can’t imagine him not using his illusion magic to fuck with random strangers for fun during his spare timeUnpopular opinion: idk if unpopular but general opinion- i used to dislike him as a character (and really only use him to bully noct with lmao) when i first played through, but then i saw a bunch of pics of him on tumblr and realized that oh no he’s pretty. i still wouldn’t list him as one of my favorites, but he is entertaining at the very least.Song I associate with them: “outrunning karma” by alec benjamin and “monster” by imagine dragons (i don’t listen to character playslists that much but please tell me there’s at least one for him with this song on there)Favorite picture of them: just gonna link this one cuz it’s nsfw (ardynoct), but also if you want an sfw one then-

Gladio

Fav thing about them: OLDER GLADIO....HAS THE BEST HAIR.........it’s so god damn PRETTY i love it so much....it’s geralt hair :DLeast fav thing about them: tbh he’s my least favorite of the bros just because he simply has the least amount of character depth and development out of the four of them (and maybe even some side characters). i want to like him but there’s just nothing much to him besides that he’s The Strong One™. noctis had to deal with the whole being a king and sacrificing everyone + himself for the greater good, etc etc, prompto’s whole dlc was him having an existential crisis and self-esteem issues, and ignis’s dlc was...all that. but gladio? no relationship building or interaction at all with the bros, barely any character development. you fight through a bunch of animals then beat some guy no one cares about so that he can come to the conclusion that he’s strong. ????? i can see why barely anyone ever talks about that dlc nowFav line: that one part when ur going through castlemark and prompto says smth like “wait if the floors sliding that way that means we’re-” “going down?” “goin’ down!” idk why i just like the way he said it and i think about it every time someone says “going down”OTP: the bros, gladnis, uh that’s bout it...brOTP: him/irisnOTP: him/prom (will still like art of them tho, but tbh this is my least favorite of any of the individual chocobro ships, right after ig/prom)Random headcanon: ???Unpopular opinion: i hate his tattoos so much, both to draw and to look at (though i will admit they look really good in his ffxiv outfit)Song I associate with them: ???Favorite picture of them: THI S WHOLE ASS COMIC
