Accounts of Qiuci and Yutian (LS54)

The state of 龜茲, Middle Chinese *Khjuw-dzi, Standard Chinese Qiūcí, now Kucha, was located on the northern side of the Tarim basin.

The state of 于闐, Middle Chinese *Hju-den, Standard Chinese Yútián, now Hotan or Khotan, was located on the south-western of the Tarim basin.

Beside their central locations on the Silk Road, both kindoms were centers for Buddhist learning and served a key role in that religion's spread into China.

The various Rong of the North-west, during the Han period, Zhang Qian first went out on the tracks of the Western Region, Gan Ying then approached the Western Sea. Sometimes they dispatched attendant sons, sometimes they offered displays of tribute. At that time, though they were destitute in troops, they were extremely martial, and they were only just overcome and vanquished. Compared to previous eras, their plundering was far reaching. In the time of Wei, three regions were [like] legs of a tripod, with daily matters of opposing halberds, When the Jin clan pacified Wu and afterwards, and they for a little while obtained a little tranquillity and rest, they merely set up the office of Wuji. The various states likewise were not yet retainers and followers. Continuing on with the Central States' destruction and disorder, Hu people rose up one after the other. The Western Region was separated and blocked from Jiangdong and difficult translations were not exchanged. Lü Guang's expedition to Quici was more like barbarians invading barbarians, and no idea of the Central States. Since that point, the various states have divided and united, been victorious or defeated, strong or weak, and it is difficult to obtain a thorough record. Bright gems and blue feathers were only familiar in the rear palaces, Pushao and Longwen [horses] rarely entered the outer offices. At Liang accepting the mandate, they who served the correct calendar and were in the court's palaces and courtyard, were the states of Chouchi, Dangchang, Gaochang, Dengzhi, Henan, Quici, Yutian and Hua. Now [I] patch together their manners and customs, and as an Account of the North-western Rong as follows:

The state of Hua is a branch of Jushi. Han's 1st Year of Yongjian [126 AD], Bahua accompanied Ban Yong to strike the northern villains and had merit. Yong elevated Bahua to Marquis Friendly to Han of the Rear Section. From Wei, Jin, and onwards, they did not communicate with the Central States.

The state of Baiti, the King's family name is Zhi and his personal name Shijiyi. His ancestors perhaps were Hu from a branch of the Xiongnu. When Han's Guan Ying fought with Xiongnu, he beheaded one Baiti cavalryman. Now it is east of the state of Hua. The distance to Hua is six day's travel, furthest west is Persia [Bosi波斯]. The land produces millet, wheat, and melons. The food is roughly similar to Hua.

Qiuci is an old state of the Western Regions. In the time of Guangwu of Later Han [r- 25 – 57 AD], their King was named Hong. He was killed by the King of Shache, Xian, who wiped out his family. Xian sent his son Zeluo to be King of Qiuci. The people of the state also killed Zeluo. The Xiongnu installed a notable man from Quici, Shendu, as King, and because of this they belonged to the Xiongnu. However Qiuci in the Han period was regularly a great state, the capital was called Yan City.

When Emperor Wen of Wei begun his reign [r. 220 - 226], they dispatched envoys with tribute to present. Middle of Jin's Taikang era [280 -289], they dispatched sons to enter [court] in attendance.

7th Year of Taiyuan [382 AD], the ruler of Qin, Fu Jian, dispatched general Lü Guang to invade the Western Region. He arrived at Qiuci. The King of Qiuci, Bochun, loaded up the treasure, set out and ran. Guang entered his city. The city has three layers. The outer walls are comparable to the walls of Chang'an. The rooms and buildings are huge and magnificent. For decoration they use gemstones, gold, and jade. Guang installed Bochun's younger brother Zhen as King, and then returned home. Since then they have been cut off from the Central States and not communicated.

The state of Yutian belongs to the Western Regions. At the end of Later Han's Jianwu era Jianwu [25 – 56 AD], King Yu was routed by the King of Shache, Xian. He moved him to be King of Ligui, and used his younger brother Junde as King of Yutian. He was violent and cruel, and the hundred families were troubled by him. Middle of Yongping [58 – 75 AD], a man of their kind, Dumo, killed Junde. A nobleman, Xiumoba also killed Dumo, and installed himself as King. Ba died, and his older brother's son Guangde was installed. He afterwards struck and captured the King of Shache, Xian, to return home, and killed him, and thereupon he made a strong state. The various small states of the north-west all yield and follow.

In their land there are many rivers and rainstorms, sand and rock. The air is warm and suitable for rice, wheat, and rose apple [putao 蒲桃]. There is a river which produces jade, it is called the Yu He [“Jade river”, 玉河]. People of the state are good at casting copper vessels. Their government seat is called Xishan City, it has roofed houses, markets, and wells. The fruit and vegetables are comparable to the Central States. They are particularly reverent of Buddhism. The building where the King dwells has cinnabar drawings applied to it. The King's headgear is a golden head-wrap, similar to the present Hu-style hat. He sits side by side with his wife when welcoming guests. Within their state, the married women all braid their hair and wear fur trousers. Their people are respectful. When they see each other, they kneel, and when they kneel, one knee touches the ground. For writing they use wood for brush and slips, and jade for stamps. When the people of the state obtain a letter, they wear it on their head, and then afterwards open up the slips. In the time of Emperor Wen of Wei, King Shanxi presented famous horses.

“I am ready for my next assignment,” a beaming Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had declared at a People’s Action Party (PAP) convention last November.

“I am all in, heart and soul,” he said, adding that he has been working hard to get ready for what would be the “biggest responsibility” of his career – to take over the baton from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as Singapore’s next leader.

Now, the assignment has come as Mr Lee announced his retirement on Monday (Apr 15).

Mr Wong will officially take over the leadership reins on May 15, when he becomes Singapore's fourth Prime Minister.

RISE THROUGH THE RANKS

The 51-year-old entered politics in 2011 after being elected as a Member of Parliament in West Coast GRC. He was given his first political office two weeks after the election – as Minister of State for education and defence.

In the 2015 General Election, Mr Wong moved to contest in the new Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, where he has been anchor minister ever since.

By then, he had risen steadily through the ranks with positions in various ministries, including the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth where he was appointed acting minister in 2012 and made full minister two years later.

After the elections in 2015, he moved to head the Ministry of National Development where he stayed on until July 2020.

In 2020, Mr Wong was tasked to co-chair Singapore’s multi-ministry COVID-19 task force with then-Health Minister Gan Kim Yong. Together with Mr Gan, and later, new Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, he helmed the country’s pandemic response and fronted key announcements at frequently held press conferences.

Political observers later said that it was Mr Wong’s steady leadership style during COVID-19, clear explanation of policies and grasp of details that put him in pole position to take over as the country’s next leader when Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat took himself out of the running for the top job in April 2021.

Mr Heng, then 60, had cited his age as the reason and that he would have “too short a runway” should he become Prime Minister after the pandemic.

Mr Wong, who was then Education Minister, took over the Finance Ministry from Mr Heng in the ensuing Cabinet reshuffle, providing the first hint of his frontrunner position given how the high-profile finance portfolio has traditionally been helmed by PAP heavyweights.

Questions about political succession were finally laid to rest in April 2022 when Mr Wong was named as the leader of the PAP’s fourth-generation, or 4G, team. Two months later, he was promoted to Deputy Prime Minister in another Cabinet reshuffle, while holding on to his finance portfolio.

Since cementing his standing as Singapore’s next Prime Minister, Mr Wong has fronted major speeches, such as delivering the keynote speech at the May Day Rally last year in place of Mr Lee.

He has also launched the Forward Singapore exercise, which provided a glimpse of how he and the 4G team intends to take the country forward.

A CIVIL SERVANT AND GUITAR LOVER

Prior to entering politics, Mr Wong was a civil servant for 14 years.

He began his career at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 1997 before moving on to other roles in the finance and health ministries.

Mr Wong became principal private secretary to the Prime Minister in 2005.

In 2008, he joined the Energy Market Authority as deputy chief executive and was promoted to chief executive in 2009.

Two years later, he stepped down from the post to enter politics as the youngest of five candidates tipped to form the core of the PAP’s 4G leadership.

The Straits Times reported previously that Mr Wong had resigned from the public sector to enter politics, a year short before reaching 15 years of service. Administrative Service officers were eligible for pension after 15 years of service.

“It was a loss, but it was not something that factored into my consideration at the time,” he had said.

On the personal front, Mr Wong grew up in what he described as an “ordinary family” in the Marine Parade HDB estate.

His late father was born in China’s Hainan Island, went to Malaysia as a young boy before moving to Singapore to work in a sales job.

His mother was a teacher. Describing her as a disciplinarian both in school and at home, Mr Wong has spoken highly of his mother in several interviews and public speeches for managing to teach while caring for him and his brother.

Mr Wong is an alumnus of Haig Boys’ Primary where his mother taught. In his teens, he attended Tanjong Katong Secondary School, which he chose because it was near his home, and later on, Victoria Junior College.

He obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He also holds a master’s in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School.

Outside of work, Mr Wong, who is married to Ms Loo Tze Lui, is known to be an avid music lover and skilled guitar player.

His love for the guitar goes back to when his father gave him his first guitar at the age of eight. He spent his weekends borrowing guitar books from the old Marine Parade library and when he got a government scholarship to study in the United States, he made sure to bring his guitar along.

Mr Wong has said that playing the guitar helps him to destress and unwind.

The incoming Prime Minister has posted several videos of him strumming his six string, including an acoustic rendition of American pop star Taylor Swift’s hit song Love Story as a tribute to educators on Teachers’ Day last year.

PM Lee to attend Apec Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Bangkok

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be in Bangkok from Thursday to Saturday to attend the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

Apec leaders will be meeting at their annual summit for the first time in person since they last met in Papua New Guinea in 2018. Their meeting in 2019 was to be held in Chile, but the country cancelled it amid a wave of local protests. Malaysia and New Zealand hosted virtual summits in 2020 and 2021 respectively, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Apec’s 21 member economies mostly take turns to chair the grouping and host its annual meeting. This year’s meeting in Thailand’s capital will be chaired by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Singapore’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said on Wednesday that during the meeting, Apec economic leaders will discuss ways to accelerate the recovery of the global economy.

This would be through the promotion of balanced, inclusive and sustainable growth, as well as trade and investment, including leveraging innovative approaches such as the Bio-Circular-Green Economy Model.

The model aims to apply science, innovation and technology to promote the efficient use of resources, maintain and restore ecosystems, and reduce waste to build a system where government and business can thrive.

Apec is a regional economic forum established in 1989. Its member economies account for close to half of global trade and more than 60 per cent of the world’s gross domestic product. They include seven of the 10 Asean nations, as well as Australia, China, New Zealand, Russia and the United States.

Thailand has also invited France, Saudi Arabia and Cambodia to the meeting.

China’s Foreign Ministry has said that Chinese President Xi Jinping will be among the world leaders in attendance. US Vice-President Kamala Harris is slated to attend instead of President Joe Biden, who is attending his granddaughter’s wedding. Recent reports have said that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not be attending the summit.

PMO added that while in Bangkok, PM Lee will also hold bilateral meetings with other Apec leaders on the sidelines of the meeting. He will be accompanied by senior officials from the PMO, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Maliki Osman are also attending the 33rd Apec Ministerial Meeting in Bangkok on Wednesday and Thursday.

They will take part in discussions on promoting balanced and inclusive economic growth, as well as on sustainable trade and investment, said a joint statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Trade and Industry. They will also hold bilateral meetings with other Apec ministers.

The Apec summit is the third high-level meeting that PM Lee is attending in November, after the Asean and East Asia Summits in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, as well as the Group of 20 Leaders’ Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong will be the Acting Prime Minister in PM Lee’s absence.

Annals of Emperor Wen of Zhou, 538 (ZS02)

[Heqiao proves a bridge too far.]

[Datong 4, 15 February 538 – 3 February 539]

4th Year, Spring, 3rd Month [15 April – 13 May], Taizu led the various generals to enter court. After the rites concluded, he went back to Hua province.

7th Month [11 August – 9 September], Eastern Wei dispatched their generals Hou Jing, Shedi Gan, Gao Aocao, Han Gui, Kezhuhun Yuan, Moduolou Daiwen and others to besiege Dugu Xin at Luoyang. Shenwu of Qi cut off his rear. Before this, the Wei Emperor wanted to favour Lyoyang to do obeisance at the parks and mounds. When it happened that Xin was besieged, he decreed Taizu to lead the army and rescue Xin. The Wei Emperor likewise went east.

8th Month, gengyin [12 September], Taizu arrived at Gucheng. Moduolou Daiwen and Kezhuhun Yuan came to confront him. He approached the battle line and beheaded Daiwen. Yuan managed to escape on a single horse. He thoroughly took captive their multitudes and sent them off to Hongnong. Thereupon he advanced the army to east of the Chan [river]. That evening the Wei Emperor favoured Taizu's camp, and so Jing and others at night abandoned the siege and left.

Reaching dawn, Taizu led light cavalry to pursue them, and arrived at the banks of the He. Jing and others to the north occupied Heqiao [“He Bridge” and to the south they linked up with Mang Mountain as their battle line, and joined battle with the various armies. Taizu's horse was hit by a flying arrow. It was startled and broke loose, and thereupon he lost it [the horse that is]. Following that, within the army was disturbance and chaos. Chief Controller Li Mu went down from his horse to offer it to Taizu, and the army was again roused. Hence there was a great victory. They beheaded Gao Aocao and his Ceremony Similar Li Meng, Inspector of Xiyan province, Song Xian, and others and took captive 15 000 of his armoured soldiers. Those who went into the He and died was in the ten thousands.

That day the deployed battle lines had been long, with head and tail far apart, and had joined in battle tens of times. Mist and fog blocked on four sides and they were not able to recognize each other. Dugu Xin and Li Yuan were on the right and Zhao Gui and Yi Feng were on the left. In the battles they had all been unsuccessful, also they knew not yet where the Wei Emperor and Taizu were located. They all abandoned their soldiers ahead and turned back home. Opening Office Li Hu, Nian Xian, and others were the rear army. When they came across Xin and the others' retreat, they promptly altogether went back with them. Because of this, he turn around the host. Luoyang likewise lost its defenders.

The Great Army arrived at Hongnong. The defending generals had all abandoned their cities and fled west. Those captive and surrendered soldiers who were in Hongnong had following that been closing the gates against them to resist and defend. They advanced to attack and root them out, and executed their main leaders, several hundred people.

During the Great Army's eastern offensive, the troops who had been kept behind to defend Guanzhong were few, and from front to rear there were captive Eastern Wei soldiers, all had been scattered among the people, who therefore plotted to make chaos. When Li Hu and others arrived at Chang'an, nothing of their plan had been carried out. He therefore, together with the excellencies and dignitaries, assisted Wei's Heir-Apparent to set out and stay north of the Wei. Guanzhong greatly shook in fear and the hundred families were plundering and pillaging each other.

Hence an army man imprisoned at Shayuan, Zhao Qingque, a commoner from Yong province, Yu Fude, and others consequently rebelled. Qingque occupied Chang'an's lesser city and Fude guarded Xianyang. They, together with Grand Warden Murong Siqing, each gathered surrendered soldiers with which to resist the returning host. In Chang'an's greater city the people all led each other to resist Qingque. Each day there were continuous battles.

The Wei Emperor halted and stayed behind at Wenxiang, and dispatched Taizu to chastise them. The old fathers in Chang'an saw that Taizu arrived, and with both grief and joy said:

Did not think that today [we] would again get to see His Excellency!

Gentlemen and women, everyone congratulated each other.

The Inspector of Hua province, Dao, led an army to assail Xianyang, behead Siqing and seize Fude. He went south across the Wei to meet up with Taizu to attack Qingque, they routed him. The Grand Tutor, Liang Jingrui, had previously stayed behind at Chang'an due to illness, and then he had communicated and planned with Qingque. Reaching this point he also submitted to execution. Guanzhong hence was then settled. The Wei Emperor returned to Chang'an and Taizu again stationed in Hua province.

Winter, 11th Month [7 December – 5 January], Eastern Wei's general Hou Jing attacked and captured Guang province.

12th Month [6 January – 3 February], Shiyun Bao assailed Luoyang. Eastern Wei's general Wang Yuangui abandoned the city and fled. Chief Controller Zhao Gang assailed Guang province and took it. From Xiang and Guang and westward the cities and garrisons again belonged inside.

'Big Mouth' Lee Jong Suk faced Yang Hyung-wook, the king of the dark world.

The 11th episode of MBC's Friday-Saturday drama '#BigMouth', aired on the 2nd, recorded 11.4% in the metropolitan area and nationwide, taking the first place in the Friday-Saturday drama. In particular, the scene where Kim Joo-heon (Choi Do-ha) confirmed the death of Hong Ji-hee (Jang Hye-jin) soared up to 13.7%, giving the couple Lee Jong Suk (Park Chang-ho) and Im Yoon-a (Ko Mi-ho) a foreboding that a new storm was about to break out. In the broadcast, a riot broke out targeting Lee Jong Suk and Im Yoon-ah, and the real Big Mouse was revealed to be the head of the room, Yang Hyung-wook (Novak).

Kim Dong-won (Gan Su-cheol), who was appointed as the new prison warden with the support of Gucheon Mayor Kim Joo-heon, conducted a physical examination of the prisoners in the name of eradicating corruption in the prison. Working with Lee Jong Suk to find the real Big Mouse and his minions hiding among the prisoners.

However, Kim Dong-won, who had a taste of power, started to creak with Lee Chang-ho from the start as he rode the creaky line.

Separately, tests to find out the contents of Park Hoon (Seo Jae-yong)'s unpublished thesis were carried out step by step. With the help of Hong Ji-hee, a new drug was detected in the blood test results of the death row inmate Yoo Tae-joo (Tak Gwang-yeon), and it was discovered that the identity of the ghost disease that the model prisoners had was leukemia. The teamwork of Lee Jong Suk and Lim Yoon-a, who unravel the clues of the thesis with the evidence they each witnessed, was a shining moment.

He assaulted former prison chief Jeong Jae-seong (Park Yun-gap) and threatened to reveal Big Mouse's identity in exchange for the lives of his minions. Lee Jong Suk, who appeared afterward, cleared the confusion, but he could not stop Kim Dong-won's greed.

At the same time, Kim Joo-heon, who had extreme anger towards Big Mouse and Lee Jong-suk, who threatened his wife Ok Ja-yeon (now Joo-hee), closed his eyes of his runaway. Kim Dong-won, who called all the inmates, exposed the fact that 'Park Chang-ho is a fake Big Mouse,' and issued an emergency measure with the attractive condition of a special amnesty to anyone who catches a real Big Mouse.

Lee Jong Suk, who watched Dong-won Kim's arbitrary behavior, decided to use him to bring out Big Mouse. As Kim Joo-heon ordered Kim Dong-won to kill Lee Jong Suk and Im Yoon-ah, the ominous prediction became a reality. As the inmates under Kim Dong-won's instructions rioted, the prison quickly became a chaos. However, Lee Jong Suk, unaware of this, simply waited patiently for the confrontation with the real Big Mouse.

In addition, as a power outage occurred inside the prison, the sense of crisis toward the couple Lee Jong Suk and Lim Yoon-a soared to the highest level. At that moment, Lee Jong Suk, who felt his popularity, turned on the lights, and he panicked after confronting the real Big Mouse Yang Hyung-wook who was sitting in front of him. Indeed, people are curious about the next story of 'Big Mouse', which cannot be predicted even one inch ahead of what Lee Jong-suk will choose after meeting with Big Mouse, the king of the dark world.

*** not many, if any at all, are ever supposed to survive being in the 41st. in this fic, it’s the name for an army division that’s been used as bait for at least ¼ century, just w/ new recruits every time. so when zuko spoke up against it, he didn’t know that it had already been decided, and that proposing it in the war room was simply procedure

hope this cleared things up (especially physical descriptions ahaha... im saying this as a joke but id genuinely bawl if someone drew one of my ocs or something from my fic lmao im saying this as if it’s super popular)
