I got REALLy deep into the defense policy weeds in this post so I’m putting a cut to save people’s dashboards

1. when i was rewriting chapters 8 &9 last winter i did literally the bare minimum of research about the current set of high-level officers. the commander of the pacific fleet at the time had previously been the director of pacific fleet logistics ordnance & supply. So that was easy to yoink. a proven chain of succession.

2. but also: it fit ice’s (or his alter ego admiral Kazansky’s) neat, orderly, effective, collected, strategic characterization. And as professional tactics go, there would be no better promotion for a high-level officer looking to take over the fleet than DFLOS. understand the fleet by the numbers, you comprehensively understand the fleet.

3. In terms of secret-keeping logistics, ice is supposed to be kind of the best. like, because of his logistical thinking, he & maverick get away with it. Or that’s how I would’ve written it if I were a little smarter. Obviously in practice a bunch of people find out so it’s not great. but the navy AS A WHOLE doesn’t find out.

4. The field of military logistics is rigorously bureaucratic, boring, soulsucking, selfdefeating, notoriously corrupt, and yet entirely necessary for the military to succeed at any level (in the very first draft of WWGATTAI i included a famous US marine corps maxim that most people have heard at some point: “amateurs talk tactics. professionals talk logistics.” but that was literally the only good thing about the original chapter 6 which got entirely rewritten a month after i published it). So logistics as a field of specialization fit in perfectly with my secondary character thesis that rising through the boring bureaucratic ranks of the Navy sucked all the humanity & will to live out of ice one day at a time.

a couple related interesting things that I’ve never talked about on this blog & might never get the chance to again:

a) ice canonically joins the navy as a fighter pilot & ends his career as a glorified bureaucrat. that sucks. obviously the struggle to rise in the ranks is a notoriously cutthroat, political, sleazy business (you do not get to the top of the United States Navy by being nice to people), but i would also not be the first person to say that—for exemplary officers—leadership is an EXPECTATION that can counterbalance someone’s natural drive to excel, if that makes sense. You get promoted because you’re good at something (flying), but you get promoted away from the thing you were good at. There is an extent to which you have to fight for a promotion—but there is also an extent to which commanders above you pick you for the job, suck you up along the pipeline. Loss of agency—a major major component of joining the military—does still apply to upper-level officers.

B) to that end, i am reminded of one quote from Todd Schmidt’s 2023 book “Silent Coup of the Guardians: US Military Elite Influence on National Security.” This is an Army training & doctrine commander speaking: “the military has a lot of two- and three-star senior leaders that were confident, charismatic commanders at the O-6 level. But that’s the end of the story. One in fifty, maybe one in a hundred, truly have what it takes to operate successfully at the strategic level and make a real difference for their service. The problem is that they all tend to think that, since they have stars on their shoulders, they’re the one.” —I’ve been writing ice as “The Chosen One,” the officer unicorn, for two reasons: one, it provides him cover for his illegal relationship (and also asks an interesting chicken-egg question: does he get away with his rlnship because he’s so good, or is he so good JUST to get away with his relationship?); and two, he’s “the chosen one” in canon, i.e. he already has four stars in canon: canonically he is not a mediocre officer. But most officers (cough cough maverick) are not cut out for high-level leadership.

C.) in Thomas E. Ricks’ book “The Generals,” Ricks argues that (at least in the Army) mediocrity in the general/flag officer ranks is unfortunately by design. In WWII, if you were a mediocre officer, you got relieved! You got fired! It’s part of why we won: merciless culling of the general officer ranks! But between WWII and Korea, officer relief began to be associated with shame & wasted resources. Mediocre officers got promoted anyways. The military elite pipeline sucks mediocrity up the chain of command. Ricks blames this issue for (at least the Army’s) shit leadership in every post-WWII war, including but most especially Iraq and Afghanistan. There’s no penalty for mediocrity. That in turn reflects on military strategy (mediocre strategists at the helm) & the outcome of every military foray (mediocre outcomes).

D) additionally. There’s a whole neverending debate in the field of civil-military relations (an extremely interesting field of study btw) about the corporatization of the military—lots of high-level talk over the years of “running the military like a business.” If you get kinda into defense policy like me (am i still antimilitary? Idk! but i CAN easily tell you i am against the navy’s littoral combat ship program! It sucks!) then you will know that the navy is struggling right now on a lot of different fronts (procurement [shipbuilding esp. is a disaster—ford-class carriers are under budget though 👍🏽], recruitment, theatre prioritization, general preparedness, readiness against major adversaries [China in particular]). Simply, the navy is pretty mediocre at the minute. I talk a big game about ice being COMPACFLT & SECNAV, but if those are true, & if he “exists” in our current timeline, or even canon timeline (COMPACFLT in 2020), then he’s complicit in a lot of why the navy is sucking ass right now. He didn’t do his job very well. LOL. So, because I love (especially my version of) ice too much to see his legacy suffer, I am stating for the record that my timeline is a different timeline where ice saves the navy from itself and fixes all its issues & solves all its problems & makes it the pride of the armed forces & the tip of the spear of American defense :) because I said so

E.) unrelated but important. It sounds obvious but it must be said. Ice dies on the job in TGM canon. To the extent that in earlier drafts of the script, not-his-sister-Sarah even points out to maverick that ice is still active duty, in the same breath as she tells him ice is sick again. (A wise move to remove that line.) ice does not resign his commission. Ice does not retire to spend time with his family at the end of his life. Ice dies as commander of the pacific fleet. He dies on the job; he dies FOR the job, bureaucratic as it is. If you were wondering why I wrote ice so dormantly suicidal, it’s because canon (i argue) has made it clear that—since the second ice signed up to be a fighter pilot during the Cold War to the second he died active duty—ice has ALWAYS been ready and willing to die for his honorable Navy career.

now to answer the main question

god i fucking. i LOOOOOOVE Saga and Casey. i love their bond and their dynamic and how they treat each other, you can tell they love each other so much and want nothing but the best for one another.

they definitely enjoy making fun of each other, that i'm pretty sure is canon, with Saga joking with him about being too old to jump off a ledge and in the mind place where she noted Casey gave her silly shit for the speech she gave when getting that one certificate. but they do it out of love. they would never actually do anything to hurt the others feelings.

Casey is definitely the older family member that just acts like a tired bastard, and he is! but he's a lovable tired bastard. the kind that he never really does anything malicious and he's the one getting shit thrown at him all the time, so you really have no reason to be mad at him.

Saga is the younger family member that enjoys quality and likes to be active with certain people as a way to show she likes you and wants to spend time with you. she bugs you and nags you but she'd never force you to do anything, buuut she will give you a LOT of reasons why you SHOULD hang out with her.

they clearly love having coffee together, they literally drink in sync. i imagine Casey does go for the straight black bean juice, and Saga always puts some sugar or cream in hers. she occasionally has full black coffee, but only in small sips. Casey does enjoy sugar or cream in his, but he just never does it unless Saga suggests it.

Casey LOVES Saga's family. he loves getting to spend time with David and talking about any mutual interests they have, and he loves being able to play with Logan and getting her to laugh and have fun. and Saga loves to watch Casey have fun in general, but she especially loves it when it's with her family. it makes her feel happy that she can make him feel safe and close to people.

i think Casey's original goal in life was to just be the best agent he could and then get a good retirement, but now because of Saga, they kinda have a joint goal of being as helpful to people as possible until they both just dont have the body and mind to keep going. Casey tho still wishes to have a peaceful life in retirement and Saga just wishes to be there for Logan and David as much as possible, and they both always want each other by their side.

Okay so☺️ everything was going so smooth, almost too smooth, and in fact BOOM Naoko texting him. I knoooooow (uh, no I don’t😎) that she is going to see a text out of nowhere and assume the worst/jump to conclusions/ NOT jump to conclusions and casually mentioning her in front him and see what he will say. Why am I so hyped for angst? Didn’t I want fluff and only fluff just 6 months ago? oooooh I miss the misery🫠.

That's so funny your mom sort of had a near miss! I can't imagine what chaos it is. My dad used to work for an airlines (he's retired now) and once got me the autograph of my favorite band. He could totally have gotten fired for i think, but I still have it just because we weren't super close and it was suc han incredibly nice thing he did for me, to even know who my favorite band was!

Oooow yes, older Levi. I bet he ages perfectly and becomes a silver fox. Woof Woof. I think age would make him more romantic, because he's spent so many years together. You gave him all the little kids he could ever want and you did the one thing needed most, you listened to him and loved him for who he was. I'm thinking ya'll have five kids, each one has kids of their own so it's a big, big, big family. I also think Levi might be more affectionate in public, and a little perverted at home. That man loves chasing your tight little booty around the house. *wink*

Levi had the best life he could possibly dream of. He'd met you while he was serving in the military. You had worked as his assistant and did all his paperwork for him, you were also medical. Levi and you were very in love and he knew how much you meant to him, that it wasn't a lie when he got blown up. You'd nursed him back to health, then hit him a few times making him swear to never do anything stupid again. He promised he'd be good and he was.

Whent the war ended, Levi married you right away with Erwin as his best man and Hange as your maid of honour. You opened up Levi's dream teashop and became the talk of the town. Your place was the place to go. The two of you were inseparable. Life became so much sweeter when you announced your first pregnancy, then came baby number two, three, four and lastly five.

The house was always full of love, laughter and happiness. Levi was a proud loving father. He was always there for his kids and loved them deeply. He was there for them every moment. He was happy and sad when they grew up, because he loved that they were getting older and learning, but at the same time he missed the little patting of tiny feet on the floor, or the squeals of joy when he scooped up his little baby.

The one thing that never changed was how he felt about you.

Levi loved your endlessly and deeply. He was there for you always. He supported you with the kids, with your personal life and when you felt like the world was closing in on you. He reminded you just how sexy, smart and beautiful you were when you felt like you were worthless, fat and ugly. He loved you for everything you were.

As the years went by, you seemed to not age at all and nor did Levi. You only had a few wrinkles, but your hair refused to turn grey. Levi's hair did go grey, but you told him it made him look like a sexy silver fox. Levi's knee played up with age, because he damaged it badly in the war. He used to be okay with it, but age does a number on your body. You supported him though, because you were so loving.

Levi retired due to his eldest son telling him he should, because if he did he could spend every single day with you spoiling you and loving you. Levi agreed, because having you always was a dream. He handed over the teashop to his eldest son and his wife. Levi and you retired at a young age, so Levi had plenty of time to running around after you and act like a horny teen.

His kids visited often, along with their kids. Today they were supposed to come over, but not until later for dinner. Levi was sat nicely in his smoking chair with a book. He had read the same line over and over again, because you kept walking backwards and forwards doing a few things around Levi. Levi got more slapped his book closed and shouted your name.

You stopped, then looked over at your husband. "Yes honey?"

He growled at you. "You have been walking around me for a whole hour and not once! Not once! Have you stopped and given me a kiss or cuddle."

You giggled. "I'm sorry, my sweet buns." You walked over and kissed his forehead. "I'm just getting the house ready for the kids and our grandkids. You know how hungry the Ackerman family gets."

Levi eyed you up. "Speaking of hungry. That dress you're wearing would look better on my nice clean floor."

You backed up. "No Levi, no. We have company in two hours!"

Levi stood up and growled. "Plenty of time for me to have you."

You laughed a little. "Levi, you know two hours isn't enough! You don't just screw me once, it's multiple times and it's endless."

Levi stepped closer. "I want you brat."

You squealed and ran away from him. "We're too old for this!"

Levi ran ahead and skidded in front of you. "I'm never too old to explore your body, eat you out and fuck you endlessly."

"Levi Ackerman! Watch that mouth of yours."

Levi looked down your body. "If you want to shut me up, I know just the place for it."

You looked down at your heat, then you grabbed a tea towel and threw it at Levi. "Bad man!"

Levi yanked the towel off, then raced after you. "Come back here and let me love you!"

You laughed as you kept running away from him. "We have to prepare for our kids!"

Levi stopped for a moment, then cried out. He sat on the stairs to upstairs and held his knee. "Shit."

You stopped running, then hurried over to Levi. "Oh honey!" You knelt down in front of him. "Are you okay?" You cupped his calf and kissed his knee. "I shouldn't have run around so much." You squeaked when he pounced on your and pinned you to the floor. "You little shit! You faked it!"

Levi purred at you. "Guilty, but for good reason." He kissed your neck and face all over. "I love you."

You hummed a laugh. "I love you too."

"Mum?" You looked upside down at your eldest son. He sighed and shook his head. "Dad? Let mum go."

Levi got off you, then pulled you up onto your feet. "Tch, fine."

You ran over to your son and hugged him. "Hi baby."

He gave you a tight hug. "Hey mum. Dad treating you okay?"

"Yes, he's just sad I haven't been cuddling and kissing him much." You gave his wife a hug. "I've been getting ready for you lot to come over."

Your son laughed. "Well, that's dad for you. He loves you endlessly."

His wife nodded. "It's rather cute."

You hummed a laugh. "He's a good boy."

Levi hugged his son. "Good to see you son. How's the shop?"

His son sighed. "Good actually."

You looked down and saw your son's twins running towards you. "GRANDMA!"

You dropped to your knees and hugged your grandson and granddaughter. "Hi my sweet ones." You pulled back. "I have some of the best cookies in the kitchen!" You looked up at your son. "I can give them cookies, right?"

He laughed and nodded. "Sure mum."

You jumped up and held their little hands. "Come on babies, let's get some cookies."

Levi let out a long love filled sigh, then looked to his son and his wife. "You're here early. I'm glad you're here actaully. We've been missing you all a lot."

His son hugged him again. "Missed you too dad."

Levi smiled and held his son close, then he joined you in the kitchen as you fed the grandkids. As time went on, more of his kids came over and brought their little ones. Levi and you were excited, because your youngest had a baby. So, you both were cuddling and kissing the sweet little baby. You both knew you couldn't have anymore kids, but you couldn't help yourselves. You both loved children.

You all gathered in the living area. Levi sat on his smoking chair, then yanked you onto his lap to sit. Levi cuddled you as he listened to his kids talking about different things going on in their lives, along with your grandkids running around playing with each other. Levi was happy, really happy and loved every waking moment with you. Growing old was a scary thought before he met you, but when you came into his life it was a dream come true. Growing old together was perfect.

You both said your goodbyes to your family, then got ready for bed. You put on a nice night dress and noticed Levi was staring. "What?"

Levi smiled. "You're beautiful."

You walked over to him and cupped his face. "My handsome silver fox." You played with his hair and admired the grey. "You've aged like fine wine."

Levi growled and nipped your neck. "You've barely aged. I was looking forward to seeing you as a sweet little old lady."

You giggled. "I will, just give me some time."

Levi lifted you up causing you to wrap your legs around him. He smiled at you and carried you to bed. He lay you down and sighed. "Just stunning."

You smiled and bit your lip as you admired the few wrinkles on his face. "So, you knew how you said earlier you wanted to be shut up by putting your head somewhere, then move on to fucking?"

Levi perked up. "Yeah?"

You kissed him and smiled. "Wanna do that now?"

Levi growled at you. "Yes please, Mrs Ackerman."

22. If their lives were what was originally intended at birth, would they have still fallen in love?(So I’ve been asking my husband - former Air Force - about aliens and Area 51 and Roswell and the military and the Xfiles and omg, rabbit hole).

YES. Jake and Millie are absolutely soul mates. Jake was originally intended to be a highly decorated Navy Pilot, retire with high honors and all of that. Millie was, well, an soul-fill entity created by Vaanu. So even if Jake was in the Navy, he would have probably encountered this amazing humanoid alienoid woman (on deployment, finding a UFO, wandering into Area 51) and would have fallen in love, gotten married, had a happy life - while keeping her secret from the very organization that he works for! It’d be like ‘I Dream of Jeannie’. I’m also picturing Fox Mulder and Dana Scully somehow being involved. (thank you for reading my stream of consciousness) 24. What is something they have each had to forgive the other for?

Millie - She’s had to forgive Jake for his forgetfulness. Like the time he forgot to pick up his and Vanessa’s M&M costume ... or the time he forgot Harper’s little Christmas Program costume. Millie realized that with him being a pilot and flying long missions and overseas, it takes a while for him to adjust back to “normal” life and, with that, he may forget those types of things. He always makes up for it! Also, once he retired early and became a stay at home Dad, she’s found herself to be the more forgetful of the two.Jake - Not growing up around the sense of family that involves at least one parent and at least one sibling, Millie didn’t quite understand why Jake would be upset when she planned a Christmas vacation to a Cancún beach resort instead of going back to Pearl River to spend Christmas and New Years with Mama McKenzie and Rebecca (and various degrees of extended family). They did take that vacation (she was excited and they couldn’t fully refund it) and during so, he explained why he was upset, she understood, and they compromised on when to take a holiday trip.

31. What do they love to do after sex?

They enjoy basking in the afterglow for a while, usually with Jake spooning Millie, and just talk about whatever. Millie loves champagne and they’ll drink half a glass afterwards (it’s become an acquired taste for him) along with a few macarons from her favorite bakery. (Phew! There we go!)
