Hangmen Also Die

Because we were at war with Germany, Bertolt Brecht was credited with the less Teutonic “Bert” for Fritz Lang’s HANGMEN ALSO DIE (1943, TCM, Hulu, Prime, Tubi, YouTube). He was only credited for co-writing the story with Lang, though later scholars have suggested he had much more influence over the writing than previously thought. Shot when the public had no knowledge of who had killed Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi’s commander in Bohemia and Moravia (now the Czech Republic), the film ascribes the assassination to a Czech doctor (Brian Donlevy) who’s unwittingly helped in his initial escape by the requisite sweet young thing (Anna Lee). When the Nazis fail to find the killer, they take hundreds of Czechs hostage, including Lee’s father (Walter Brennan), and start executing them until the killer comes forth.

There are lengthy discussions of whether Donlevy should sacrifice himself to save the hostages that smack of Brechtian philosophizing, particularly since there’s no right answer. There are also places where the Resistance is shown to be almost as ruthless as their occupiers, particularly a scene in which a crowd tries to stop Lee from going to the Gestapo with what she knows. But there are also a lot of complications involving Lee’s fiancé (Dennis O’Keefe), who thinks she’s having an affair with Donlevy, that reek of Hollywood. Fortunately, whenever the action flags, there’s a Lang touch — a quirk or gesture that gives a minor character more of an identity, rapid cutting to capture the plot’s repercussions on the city, a murder committed in silence and depicted through details— to liven things up.

Lee is lovely, as usual. She’s both natural and committed. Donlevy has good moments but suffers in the debate scenes, where he doesn’t seem to know what to do. The film also has strong support from Brennan along with Nana Bryant as his wife, Margaret Wycherly as his sister, Gene Lockhart as a Nazi informant, Alexander Granach as head of the Gestapo, Jonathan Hale and Byron Foulger as Resistance leaders and Lionel Stander as a Resistance fighter. German actor Hans Heinrich von Twardowski only has a few moments as Heydrich, but his body language as he sadistically dominates his underlings provides everything you need to understand the monster who helped craft the Final Solution. James Wong Howe did the cinematography and captures some wonderfully stark black-and-white images. And Brecht’s frequent collaborator, Hans Eisler did the effective score, including music for a Resistance song that runs through the film’s latter half.

Co-writer John Wexley appealed to the Writer’s Guild for sole credit and won, although at least one member of the jury called him a “credit-stealer” and said he’d only won on a technicality. Years later, HUAC labeled the film Communist propaganda, and its sole credited screenwriter was blacklisted. I think there’s a moral there somewhere.

sash — Today at 7:55 PM okay. a little bit late but i've been giving it some thought.

i think the biggest Thing in orv in terms of philosophy is poststructuralism, and you're def going to find ideas by roland barthes in it (e.g. the classic "death of the author", or the idea of cultural phenomena as modern myths from "mythologies"). like, orv deals a lot with escaping clear categorizations and rejecting binaries + meaning of a text being generated from a network of related stories, rather than being intrinsic to one specific work. and those things are arguably the key characteristics of poststructuralism (though take this with a massive grain of salt bc it's notoriously difficult to define due to its very nature). i actually had an essay about this in the works but don't ask me when i'll finish it, it's currently languishing half-written in my google drive.

that aside sing shong namedrop quite a lot of literary works/philosophers. off the top of my head:

anna croft's zarathustra --> nietzsche's "thus spoke zarathustra" (i've seen a reddit essay that delves into this one in particular) theater dungeon endboss --> "simulacra and simulation" by jean baudrillard lsk's faction called "nouvelle vague" --> french art film movement from the 50s aileen makerfield's "etika clock store" --> POSSIBLY a reference to spinoza's "ethica" but do not take my word for this, it's just a wild guess fourth wall --> bertolt brecht's verfremdungseffekt hsy's --> "the neverending story" by michael ende outer gods/hounds of tindalos --> h.p. lovecraft (particularly sp --> nyarlathotep)

ofc there's also ysa's haruki murakami, han kang and raymond carver thing which. maybe that's a coincidence or just meant to highlight ysa's highbrow tastes but it's…. Something. in the epilogue, judith butler, roland barthes (or at least "mourning diary") and pierre bourdieu are mentioned by name as well. [8:00 PM] so like. there's A Lot. orv is juggling a million references at all times, some of which are super obvious (like journey to the west, wizard of oz or the book of revelations) and others are ??? who knows. they even like to draw connections to their other webnovels which is becoming even more relevant in the side stories.

sash — Today at 8:05 PM i have seen someone on postype talk about daniel dennett, walter benjamin and rené girard in relation to orv as well but i don't know much about them so i'm unsure if it's a case of sing shong planting explicit references that i have missed, or if op was simply doing "normal" analysis. point is that 1) sing shong love their french philosophers 2) if you want, you can find Anything in orv. there is a sheer endless amount of stuff to pick apart.

CONEXIÓN ENTRE CARNELIAN BLOOD Y DIABOLIK LOVERS

Para responder a la duda de todo aquel que ha escuchado que CB y DL tienen una conexión, pero las historias les parecen demasiado distintas.

En la sinópsis de Carnelian Blood traducida por mi amiga y admin de la página de facebook, @sugar-lollipop , se menciona tanto a lo fundadores, una enfermedad que los exterminó y al banmaden: "Hay un recuerdo peligroso que no debería haber sido recordado. Un bello Cardenal una vez trajo una calamidad a los residentes que vivían en el abismo del Makai/Inframundo. Existe un ominoso/abominable relieve de algo deteriorado descubierto en el Pandemonium/Banmaden por los Fundadores que estaban orgullosos de su poder/gloria en el Makai. Una enfermedad que provocó la extinción de los Fundadores/Ancestros"

Durante el capítulo V del manga de Carnelian Blood se hace mención de los clanes Adler (águila), Vibora (Víbora) y Volf (Lobo). Sumado a esto, en el capítulo del manga que venía con el primer fanbook se menciona que los cinco miembros de EROSION pertenecen a estos clanes, siendo Toxin y Yoru lobos, Neight y Byakuya águilas y Creha una víbora. Además, en el capítulo VII aparece un vampiro, el mismo que se lleva mencionando desde la sinópsis de la historia de Carnelian Brecht.

El vampiro que aparece en el manga y convierte en uno de los suyos al protagonista no es nadie más y nadie menos que Karl Heinz. En el capítulo VIII del manga se le ve jugando ajedrez con una especie de sombra que muy probablemente se trate de su buen amigo Sócrates.

En el segundo CD drama principal de EROSION se da a conocer que los miembros de la banda no solo han sido enviados a Japón, sino que a la ciudad ficticia de Kaminashi, en donde también reside el elenco de Diabolik Lovers. En este mismo CD se hace mención de la academia Ryoutei, a donde asisten los vampiros y fundadores, ojo, no es la misma academia a la que asisten los cinco hermanos, pues ellos van a Hoshiin.

En el tercer drama se vuelve a mencionar la academia, debido a que alumnos de estas asistirán al festival escolar de Hoshiin, al final del CD también aparecen 3 de los hermanos sufriendo un ataque al sentir la presencia de un vampiro que casualmente resulta ser pelirrojo.

Como un último punto, en el primer volumen de EROSION WITH YOU la protagonista de la saga afirma haberse criado en la iglesia de Kaminashi, lugar conocido por ser donde se crío Yui, aunque los recuerdos de esta chica no son de fiar.

Para finalizar, todos estos puntos son aquellos que demuestran que efectivamente esta historia ocurre en el mismo universo que DL, sin embargo, no deja de ser un spin off, por lo que es una historia distinta, con personajes ajenos al elenco de la saga original y que no tiene por qué llegar a mezclarse con la historia de ellos, así que no hay que sorprenderse por si llegan a mencionar poco y nada a los vampiros y fundadores sádicos.

This is pre-Brecht in Peter Lorre's career. Between 1925 and 1928, Peter was immersed in the café and theatre life in Vienna, playing all sorts of roles and disguised by makeup and costumes.

Peter is so damn cute. The balance of eyes and outrageous moustache work so well. Reminds me of Jerry Colonna, though Peter's career predates his in a visual sense.

I believe that image is from Die fleissige Leserin (The Diligent Reader), Kammerspiele, Vienna, 1926 - because of this one where Peter Lorre is second from right with what looks like a similar coat and moustache:
