Put together the frame for the coat rack. Used some cherry and some very simple hand cut dovetails. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

For no reason here's a few of the ancient tools I've collected so far. The wrench and monkey wrench are about a century old, or more, I think the little one is from a Model T, as it has the Ford brand molded into the handle. And the Yankee screwdrivers range between the 1940s to 60s(?). I'm kinda collecting them at this point, they're kinda fun to use & nice to have when the batteries in my drill & electric screwdriver die. The middle one is also a very good at being a ratcheting screwdriver. Only issue is the bits for em are very hard to come by cheap these days. Unless I get lucky at fleamarkets & estate sales like where I got the pretty Craftsman one in box with multiple bits for $2 >w>

"It was a freak accident, the screwdriver went right my nose. The doctor said I don't really need that part of my . . . my . . . top hat?" "Do yo mean brain?" "Yes! That's the word, top hat."

476,000 years ago
"To date these objects, the researchers analyzed minerals in the sand that surrounded them through a technique called luminescence dating, Geoff Duller, a co-author of the study and dating expert at Aberystwyth University in Wales, tells the AP. The smaller wooden objects were buried around 390,000 and 324,000 years ago."
There are good pics and diagrams of the finds in this Nature article. Found tools - flake tools, cleavers, handaxes and core axes - and the wooden structure. "This construction has no known parallels in the African or Eurasian Palaeolithic."
"...before this new find, the oldest known structure made of wood was only 9,000 years old.." Smithsonian

Planing a cupped body blank flat because the CNC was busy and the thicknesser is only 10" wide. My vintage record plane made, well, not quick work of it but certainly good work. Always makes me feel cool af working with hand tools, like yes I am the cool lesbian that does woodworking. 😎

he loved it and I think it came out pretty well :)))
I do wish I'd cut out a spot for the clock mechanism so it doesn't stand off the wall so much, but I didn't know where it would go until later (wouldn't want to drill too close to a knot or crack). I suppose if I'd planned my wood pieces in advance that would've been possible, but oh well.
Also since it's off center, I also added d rings and picture wire to hang it on the back, and a small block to keep it balanced level on the wall. The rings were kind of a pain to install because the screws they came with were too long.. but it works and it's the back so nobody's looking haha.
I've posted some WIP pics already, but here's the progression from log -> boards all in one place :)

so much hand sawing.. (I did try using a circular saw to start a couple cuts, but it was either too wobbly to be safe, or too shallow to get through the whole thing.)
I really like how the live oak looks just with the poly - so much natural variation and interesting grain. This was only ~1/4 of a log and we have a whole pile so definitely thinking about more projects. may wait for the garage to stop being a sauna first though.

Spent the day cleaning my workshop and working on a wedding gift. Building out a piano coatrack where the white keys can be levered out to hold coats, then pushed back to get the piano motif. The white keys are made of a curly hard maple, and the black keys out of some walnut. Still have a lot of sanding left and need to build the outer frame.

Rough key layout

Relief cut to let the key rotate.

Initially assembled and working. Really happy how the grain flows across the keys

I've been having a terrible time lately with a separated husband situation and a major work crush disaster and I've been not eating, having trouble sleeping, spiralling into the abyss etc until I remembered.
Ladies, go dig you a ditch. Go rake some leaves. Go hammer literally anything. Roll a boulder around. You will feel better.
But don't just go for a run or do some yoga. You need to have some kind of weight, both literal and metaphorical. I dug out some leaves that were blocking our drainage ditch and it was absurd how much it helped.
