tired of the obsession with "ethical" vampires and also "good" vampires who don't eat.
i think there's a lot to be said about fatphobia and the glamorization of EDs in vampire media, particularly in more modern depictions... i don't want to place the blame solely on twilight because this was happening way before the 2000s but i do think that had a huge impact with meyer's weird obsession and unwillingness to depict the vampires as anything other than thin and pale (and her singular fat aka tall and curvy vampire is described as "intensely feminine" and we don't have time to unpack all of that in this post)
saying that vampire venom "melts the fat" off of people, or that the vampire venom turns a person into their "ideal self" - who is the one saying my ideal self would be skinny? why is that the ideal at all?
i also just find it soooo fucking boring to neuter your vampires in this way. the whole point is to explore these deep desires and impulses and especially in romance these power imbalances that come from human/vampire relationships. i find the "good" vampire to be such a cop out. why even make them a vampire. twc vampires are just glorified super soldiers that work for the government. twilight vampires are just a bunch of mormon models. there's no real substance to them. even if you wanted to make an argument about edward, it falls flat because stephanie meyer doesn't write him intentionally, she genuinely thinks this shit is romantic & isn't ever really interested in exploring their age gap or edward's hunger.
i think interview with the vampire (the show) approaches the "good" vampire in an interesting way with louis. the decision to make him a gay black man adds so much to his desire to be "good" (accepted) and there's more to it than just him not wanting to eat humans; he's worried about the way the world will perceive him. and he still has so much love for claudia despite how different they are and the things she's done (but ultimately he still chooses lestat over her!!!) and he tries to influence daniel's perception of her, too. i also like that they still actually show him eating, versus the cullens, who i don't ever recall being shown on screen (or in the book) eating anything.
when i write about the hunger in blood choke, i worried about how people would react to the hunting scenes in ch2. overall, way more positively than i expected. there's a lot more i want to expand on especially in the next chapter, and i worry about how it may look right now in the game's unfinished state. i don't want the hunger to be something bad, at least not at its core. everyone is hungry. everyone eats. and i wanted to make it so the vampires in my world could not just opt out of it. they can't eat animals, they can't sustain on blood alone, they have to eat.
when it comes to the mc, they struggle with the hunger, but it's more than that. like with louis, it's the combination of that visceral hunger but also being gay and gender nonconforming, someone who has always been an outcast in society struggling to find their way back in after having their memories and sense of self completely wiped clean. their hunger is a manifestation of this idea they have of their past self - the potential for them to become the next Standard - and their physical/sexual desire that they repressed for so long now untethered due to their lack of memories as well as waking up in a more accepting world.
i think this is a much more interesting way to approach the hunger as opposed to painting the actual act of eating as inherently evil. in twilight, all the good vampires don't eat, even when bella is a human she doesn't eat. in dracula, lucy is only ever good when she doesn't eat. and when she does eat, she becomes an evil, indulgent sexual demon that is a threat to all men and she has to be destroyed.
female vampires always get the worst of it; they are sexual deviants, they want to kill all men, they asked for it, they're disgusting and vile for desiring anything from food to sex to independence. this of course goes way back; again, look at lucy. even in more "progressive" vampire media like bit, the lesbian vampire is evil, hates all men, and is tricking and seducing her female companions into it.
it's interesting to see how far back these trends go. dracula and carmilla all the way up to the modern depictions today. the "good" vampire narrative almost never works; i think because the idea of what is "good" is always going to be influenced by the person creating it. edward is not a "good" vampire. he is a 108 year old man who preys on a teenage girl; this should have been far more important to his character than whether or not he, as a vampire, drinks human blood. but instead he's considered good because he only eats deer and he's skinny and white and looks like a model, and because stephanie meyer says he is.
i don't write all this to say that these topics can't be explored (twilight is terrible for many other reasons, and i think iwtv does do it well) but just to point out why, in my opinion, the "good" vampire is usually such a weak narrative. who decides what is good? and there are other ways to explore the themes of desire and humanity than just restricting their diet... just because your vampire doesn't eat humans does not make them automatically good. and to be frank no vampire will ever be ethical!!! that's the point!!!!

If you ask me, the problems with jjk manga rn are the set up expectations and the lack of payoff - rant + how I'd end the manga if I were Gege
Firstly, at the beginning every character had their personal motivation and goals. Now the characters are either dead, aren't appearing in the manga or their entire focus and only goal is "stopping the unstoppable". Naturally, the thrill is gone because we know they can't.
Secondly, there were characters like Hana Kurusu and Angel who were supposed to serve bigger purpose but suddenly disappeared. Of course those two can still come back, but the way things have been up to this point is rather unnerving. Or the way we've been teased with Tsumiki and her relationship with Megumi, only for her character to be thrown away and for the siblings to not even meet up (and maybe never get to) since the time she's fallen into a comma.
And so on and so on. We've either been having questions from the beginning that can be answered but haven't, or those that can't be answered because the character has died - Yuki and her idea of breaking away from cursed energy. Then there are recent questions that have been answered almost immediately but have poor answers - Yorozu's motivation (girl, at least beat Sukuna up to some extent).
The only 'constant' is Yuuji's questionable existence and his conflict with Sukuna. Not an actual constant of course, but his development feels natural and his conflict with Sukuna is reaching its climax in the right way.
Don't get me wrong, character's motivation and goals should change as the situation calls for it, but not to the point in which character is just a poor resemblance of who they used to be/were supposed to be based on the teasers.
Maki is also a character whose character arc has been done well up to this point, but if her entire existence continues to revolve around being another Toji it's going to turn out quite disappointing.
To be honest I was hoping for things coming full circle BUT turning the right way this time:
The (star plasma) vessel - Yuuji (Megumi now apparently)
The one with heavenly restriction who kills the vessel (and Sukuna) - Maki (maybe Yuuji now? I don't know)
Also Kenjaku once mentioned that things they have created can't surpass them, and now I really wish Yuuji puts an end to them togethet with Choso (which is highly unlikely, in fact almost impossible, i know). It would serve as an echo of what Yuki and Choso attempted to do - Yuki and Yuuji both being those who escaped their fate as vessels.
And since those two can't fight Kenny, maybe they could outsmart them, beat them at their own game (again, can't see that happening, but those two deserve some peace from their unhinged creator). Or maybe Yuuta could help them.
However, Yuuji's conflict is with Sukuna right now, not Kenjaku. For aforementioned to happen he'd have to learn about his past and instead of accepting, hate the idea he is just being a cog (in Kenny's plans this time). He needs to accept the idea that he deserves to live just as much as anybody else, and SHOULD fight for his life - and in that way honor the way Kugisaki lived too. (If anybody forgot she asked Momo "Is your life just a job?!" while they were talking about Mai). Like Gojo said, no one is allowed to take youth away from young people.
From the start one od the themes of the manga has been accepting and enjoying one's life, and both Yuuji and Choso should accept theirs, redesign them and live for themselves.

"jjk female cast is the best, stop hating!"
i don't like nobara she's rude loud & annoying, I hate the way she treats yuuji *vine boom sfx* yuki's most pronounced character trait is asking what someone's type is *boom* miwa has blue hair but no pronouns *boom* shoko is constantly being overshadowed by gojo & geto *boom* utahime's personality is hating gojo, what's her relevance to the story? *boom* tsumiki is a human-shaped plot device *boom* mai is depicted as a weak sorcerer plus she's a hater for the sake of hating, she reminds me of misogynistic women *boom* riko is a plot device in human form also *boom* uro is basically ecchi fanservice *boom* momo has been as relevant to the story as a pair of socks *boom* I have no words for remi *boom* hana's whole motivation stems from being a simp for megumi *boom* yorozu's personality literally is being a sukuna simp *boom*
maki is the only female character that has achieved real character development
Tumblr media
I like mei mei, she's strong, independent & evil, she keeps serving cunt & boss bitch realness. I am pretending ui ui doesn't exist. *several vine boom sfx in short succesion*

lowkey sucks that PB can't write good wlw LIs outside of the GOC bubble. they're all either villanised in the name of a character arc, but it is never as "full" as their male counterparts. at least in modern choices books.
while we get a variety of archetypes for male LIs, there's just too "few" to choose from out of female LIs. they're either the "innocent do-gooder/the shy nerd", "the athletic one and their entire persona is just being tough and ofc they'll be the butt of all villany" and the "wildcard" persona like angel savage from WTD or aisha bhatt from BP who are put in this category. and that's it! pb's way of saying "get f-ed"
while they have gotten better at like, recognizing sapphic relationships, it is just so strange/weird/bad that the meagre handfuls of non-GOC wlw LIs are just boxed in this category and are just written for someone's sake.

Every time I think "there's just no way Webtoon can get worse, I can handle how annoying it is now" the company takes it as a fucking challenge. Like in what world does everything they've done make users want to stay??
Legitimately you could put a gun to my head and I could not tell you the difference between any of the series they keep screaming at users to read. It's either boring badass anime boy with a unique and suuuper powerful ability or generic anime girl in a fantastical world dealing with a taboo romance. Or it's Lore Olympus which is somehow both.
Like I went into the app just to count and immediately it opened up some random series preview and threw an ad for another series on top of it. And often when I'm in the app it'll just give me an ad while I'm reading.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like without reading any of these, could you honestly tell me what the fuck the difference is between them. And fucking read the description for The Last Airbender Adventurer.
Tumblr media
I mean do I even have to say it. Bro just copy-pasted it directly from GPT to the desc and not a single person stopped them.
This is sort of a deep cut but for any real ones who know Choices: Stories You Play, this looks fucking familiar doesn't it. I mean who cares about legitimate creativity and good stories your users WANT to interact with when you can have "The Nanny Affair 9".
Being constantly bombarded with ad after ad for these stories doesn't make anyone want to read them more, it just makes me want to uninstall the app and never think about it again. Which sucks! There is a lot of genuine creativity on here, and those are the stories that I want to read. The problem is that Webtoon has gotten so far into the Content Farm Mindset™ it's no longer worth trying to look for those. Like most of the series I'm reading are plot-based and when they end, I'm not looking for more. I'm throwing it all in the dumpster where it seemingly wants to be.

Uuugh to be anxious about one baby who somehow imprints on me for no reason and fighting with my stubborn colleague who keep on saying it’s because I cuddle her too much (NO I DON’T).
(For real, it’s got to the point she didn’t want to eat with anyone else but me today 💀 it started with following me while crying to the dorm or the children restroom and now this…)

Gearbreakers by Zoe Hana Mikuta (August 2022)
Tumblr media
The shadow of Godolia's tyrannical rule is spreading, aided by their giant mechanized weapons known as Windups. War and oppression are everyday constants for the people of the Badlands, who live under the thumb of their cruel Godolia overlords.
Eris Shindanai is a Gearbreaker, a brash young rebel who specializes in taking down Windups from the inside. When one of her missions goes awry and she finds herself in a Godolia prison, Eris meets Sona Steelcrest, a cybernetically enhanced Windup pilot. At first Eris sees Sona as her mortal enemy, but Sona has a secret: She has intentionally infiltrated the Windup program to destroy Godolia from within.
As the clock ticks down to their deadliest mission yet, a direct attack to end Godolia's reign once and for all, Eris and Sona grow closer--as comrades, friends, and perhaps something more...
Would I recommend it to anyone? Not to someone who wants to read SF with a little romance (or with no romance at all). Otherwise, not really, if you want to see mechas I'd rather recommend Iron Widow or the first Pacific Rim movie.
Level of (dis)satisfaction based on the summary and my expectations? Honestly, I was really disappointed. I was expecting action and interesting worldbuilding but, uh... yeah.
My thoughts on it? Celebrating Mia (@yourneighborhoodbibliophile)'s return to booklr with some salt ✨:
I saw this review on Goodreads that sums up what I thought of the first book:
“if I had to read one more version of “you do not have my permission to die” in this book I was legitimately going to gouge my eyes out”
I felt like I was reading a fanfic. And I love reading fanfiction, but this was everything that makes me rage quit a fic condensed into one book. First, there was the found family trope with very "funny" dynamics where people run after each other, pulling dumb pranks, hanging someone from a window on the 5th floor threatening to kill them... It wouldn't have been as much of a problem if it had been contained to the main group, but the few interactions we see between the pilots lead us to think that they also had this dynamic. It didn't make sense to me that EVERYONE behaves the same way and it made me think that the author didn't know how to write anything else.
The fight scenes honestly disappointed me. Everytime there was a fight scene, it would cut in the middle and skip to after the fight. It really gave the impression that the author skipped them thinking "I'll come back to that later" and never did. The first time it happened I was so lost, I thought I had skipped a page or that there were pages missing entirely, but no. It was pretty annoying because it happens a lot so it feels like the book was left unfinished out of laziness. Plus, what's the point of reading about mechas if there's no mecha fight?! I don't know if the author is aware of that but she does say in her acknowledgements that it ended up being more of a love story with mechas in it than mechas with a love story, so...
I feel like we only see glimpses of who the characters are, at least for Jenny. The rest are kinda just... there. We know about Sona and Eris because we're in their heads but the others are quite shallow. I don't even remember all of the names of Eris' crew. I also don't understand the motivations behind one particular character's actions, they just don't add up to what (little) we know of him.
All in all, it was entertaining. It gets the job done and I genuinely liked Sona. It was a story that had potential but it deserved to be edited (better?).
“if I had to read one more version of “you do not have my permission to die” in this book I was legitimately going to gouge my eyes out”

what pisses me off with Hana
she’s a literal fucking baby who keeps getting separated from her mothers
like that’s so fucking cruel, Hana’s still very young and it’s shown in the light novels that she’s become bratty after being so much PAIN from being fucking separated from her parental figures
Hana’s been through so much trauma (also see the shit that happens in Sharp, also Motto as well but on a lesser extent but it still hurts)
ALSO SHE LITERALLY SAYS SHE SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN BORN!
Tumblr media
Before people say she’s recovered after her talk with Doremi in this scene…FUCK NO! first of all you can’t recover from so much pain after a simple talk (as someone who’s still dealing with trauma, I’ve had so much simple talks yet I am still dealing with trauma) and second of all the light novels show she’s still dealing with that pain
I just wish Hana snapped, she deserves to lash out (which is why I am witting Ojamajo Doremi Nozomi!)
Hana deserves better, she deserves to be with her parents (I get that they have school but at least let Doremi’s family help with Hana)
that’s the end of my rant
Tumblr media
Here have some happy Hanas after so much anger / sadness
