A non-romantic K-drama starter pack
If you're interested in K-dramas but don't know where to begin, and aren't interested in (or would like to take a break from) romantic storylines, then this is for you!
P.S.: Some of these dramas may contain romantic side plots that don't necessarily define the main storyline. List not sorted in any particular order, and only includes completed dramas.
Gifs not mine!
Stranger (2017; 2019)
A political crime thriller full of red herrings, "Stranger" (Season 1) follows an investigation into the murder of a man who has bribed countless officials from multiple levels and branches of government. Led by stoic prosecutor Hwang Shi Mok (Cho Seung Woo) and feisty detective Han Yeo Jin (Bae Doona), this well-paced, well-acted drama is full of twists and turns that will make you suspect everyone at some point.
Tumblr media
Kingdom (2019; 2020)
Historical political drama meets zombie thriller in the 2019 hit "Kingdom" (Season 1). The story follows Crown Prince Yi Chang (Ju Ji Hoon) as he investigates an outbreak of a mysterious plague that turns average citizens into rabid monsters while fighting to keep  his rightful place as heir to the throne. The hit series has led to a second season and a prequel TV movie "Ashin of the North" (2021).
Tumblr media
Signal (2016)
Featuring a mysterious walkie-talkie that links the past to the present, "Signal" is one of the most beloved police dramas of the last decade because of its refreshing take on the genre and the top-notch performances of its three leads: Kim Hye Soo, Lee Je Hoon, and Jo Jin Woong.
Tumblr media
The Uncanny Counter (2020)
"The Uncanny Counter" is a comedy-drama about four "counters", or grim reapers who have been lent superhuman abilities by a group of spirits. Their main job is to stop demons who possess violent criminals that become more powerful by consuming the souls of their victims. Funny, colorful, and action-packed, the show features wonderful performances from the main actors: Jo Byeong Gyu, Yoon Joon Sang, Kim Se Jeong, and (my personal favorite) Yeom Hye Ran. The hit series has been granted a second season.
Tumblr media
Racket Boys (2021)
If you need a feel-good drama that's not too heavy on the tears, crime, and lovey-dovey tropes, then this may be for you. "Racket Boys" is about an underdog middle school badminton team that dreams to make a mark on the national level and beyond. The rural setting and endearing ensemble cast, led by the talented Tang Jun Sang, allow for lighthearted moments but are never too cartoonish. A puppy love storyline exists between the leads, but it's very wholesome and innocent, and given far less importance than the struggle surrounding the national tournament.
Tumblr media
Squid Game (2021)
International smash hit "Squid Game" is about a mysterious organization that selects individuals with impossible debt to participate in a series of children's games to have a shot at winning 45.6 billion won. The catch: only the winner gets to live. Features an amazing ensemble cast led by Lee Jung Jae, Park Hae Soo, and impressive newcomer Jung Ho Yeon.
Tumblr media
Dear My Friends (2016)
A slice-of-life comedy drama featuring a stellar ensemble cast of the most accomplished Korean actors and actresses over 60, "Dear My Friends" follows 40-year-old writer Park Wan (Go Hyun Jung) as she chronicles the stories of her mother, her aunts, and their families. There are two romantic side stories here but the overall plot is more invested in how your friends can become your family especially after you reach a certain age. Think "Golden Girls" but in Korea. Praise-worthy acting from everyone involved, especially the main quintet: Na Moon Hee, Kim Hye Ja, Go Doo Shim, Park Won Sook, and Oscar winner Youn Yuh Jung.
Tumblr media
Live (2018)
"Live" is a slice-of-life, police procedural drama that tells the story of rookies and veterans at Hongil Station in Seoul, where there is no shortage of petty and violent crimes. The crimes featured examine the decisions that South Korean cops have to make especially in dangerous situations wherein the gray areas become even grayer. There are romantic storylines between the four leads but they never overshadow the cases. Wonderful acting, especially from Bae Sung Woo and Bae Jeong Ok who play the veterans Oh Yang Chon and Ahn Jang Mi, respectively. Also stars funny man Lee Kwang Soo and the angelic Jung Yu Mi (Train to Busan).
Tumblr media
Vincenzo (2021)
Born in South Korea, adopted into an Italian family, mafia lawyer Vincenzo Cassano (Song Joong Ki) flies back to Seoul after falling out with his adopted brother following the death of his boss/father-figure. His mission is to retrieve gold hidden beneath the dilapidated Geumga Plaza before it is ultimately demolished by the evil Babel Group that constantly harrasses its tennants to move out. Teaming up with the feisty lawyer Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Been, Vincenzo uses mafia tactics in his war against the conglomerate that thinks itself above the law. What sounds like a heavy premise is offset by the physical and witty comedy provided by the charismatic leads and supporting cast. There is romance between the leads (who share great chemistry nonetheless) but it is by no means the driving force of this story. They could have recasted this with two male leads as more of a bromance story and the outcome would be quite similar, but Jeon Yeo Been gives a unique, quirky flair to her character that makes her difficult to replace.
Tumblr media
Hyena (2020)
I know I said this wasn't a list for romantic K-Dramas but hear me out. There's romance but it's not what you think (the leads kiss a grand total of 3 times, twice in the first ep then once a little later). "Hyena" explores the world of corporate lawyers who serve the South Korean 1%. It's a dog-eat-dog world where the most conniving and least picky hyena reigns supreme. The hyena in question would be the brilliant renegade lawyer Jang Geum Ja (Kim Hye Soo). Sparks fly as she goes head to head with the by-the-book, elite lawyer Yoon Hee Jae (Ju Ji Hoon), whose ideals are constantly challenged as his world unravels around him.  The cases are challenging and the solutions that the leads come up with are intriguing. Romance doesn't drive this drama, but the chemistry between the leads is undeniable.

Dr. Romantic: The Way to a Dream Come True
Tumblr media
Dr. Romantic is made up of three seasons with a lapse of 4 years between the Season 1 and Season 2 and a 3 years lapse between Season 2 and 3. The first season we are introduced to the regular Doldam Hospital and new arrivals: Kang Dong Joo and Yoon Seo Jung. Master Kim helps these two young doctors and his regular staff to sharpen their skills and find realize their dreams. We see their growth as professionals and as human beings, while healing people and fighting to keep the hospital open. This first season ends with Kang Dong Joo and Yoon Seo Jung heading to new challenges but leaving a hope for their return.
Second season, Master Kim and his regular staff are still healing people while fighting to maintain the hospital running. We are introduced to three new doctors: Cha Eun Jae, Seo Woo Jin, and Yoon Ah Reum. In this case we have doctors returning and a doctor from a capital hospital, Park MinGuk becomes Holdam Hospital director as part of Chairman Do's attempt to take Master Kim down. But at the end we leave the hospital with a secure standing (no one can touch the property) and Dr. Park decides to partner with Master Kim and work together towards making Master Kim's dream come true - have a trauma center in the hospital.
Season 3 seems to be the conclusion to his story. Now they have the trauma center building connected to the old part of the hospital and they are about to open, but they need government funding to help run the center since this is a non-profit hospital. The staff is divided into two areas and those working at the trauma center will need to deal with their new director. Master Kim's Plan B - Dr. Cha Jin Man, who is also Dr. Cha Eun Jae's father and later Plan A - Kang Dong Joo.
I must admit that I was so excited to see Kang Dong Joo back and to see that Yoo Seo Jung returned, along other doctors that were part of the staff in the previous two seasons. It is satisfying to see Master Kim's dream come true: have the trauma center ran by his students.
You would've thought that he would want to run the center - after all, it was his dream - but he decided to stay in the old part of the hospital and have the another person run the trauma center. I loved the love stories and the new young characters. It was a really sweet way to bring this story to an end.
This story is one of my favorites on the doctors-drama category. A most watch, the three of them. I would watch them back to back, that way I would catch on things I probably missed since I saw them when they came out and time has past between each viewing.

Kendisine en net The Beauty Inside dizisinden aşinayım.  İkisinin de ayrı ayrı trajik hikayeleri arka planda ilerlerken küçük hastanenin hastaları, hastane içinde olan olaylar diziyi götürüyordu. Doktor dizilerinde her bölüm tanıştığımız hastalar asıl hikayeyi şekillendiriyor.

That handshake between the ML (Dong Baek, real name Sung Ju-ho) and FL (Han Su Mi) at the finale episode gives hope of them working again together… and maybe add the missing romance element. This show was very effective in removing that, though. It works!
And the development revealing all serial killers, from "The Executioner" to an accomplice to "The Eraser," is something you won't expect even if you try to play the detective game. 👌🏻

Jazz for Two Eps 1 & 2 Stray Thoughts
Back with another BL that I think the Omega X boys are in. This time it's a music BL in collaboration with a Thai team (I think).
Episode 1: Summer Time
Oh lord we got a sad boy in the rain.
Ah yes. Yoon Se-heon is not a talented pianist in a family of talented pianists, and the dad is a hard ass about it..
Oh ho! It's probably not that he isn't talented. It's that he doesn't like classical music.
Of course the big brother knows about the jazz music. He also avoided the question about whether the study abroad program was going well.
I didn't have time to read this broody boy's shirt, but it looked melancholy.
Suddenly A Shoulder To Cry On cameo.
Oh no, a Korean bully. I'm not ready. At least we learned that our broody boy is named Han Tae-yi. Why the bully needed to touch him suggestively while mentioning his sister I don't want to know.
This boy really put that paper back on the floor. That's not leaving a place cleaner than you found it, sir.
Why is everyone in this school so rude? Let the boy play the piano! Shit!
Ah, Tae-yi is grieving a brother. I'll let him slide for now.
Ah, a classic. They're in the same class.
Episode 2: My Foolish Heart
I respect this kid for being so determined to practice jazz that he snuck into school early to do so.
Darkening the screen when he thought about the piano room being haunted was a neat effect.
Hey! I played trumpet as a kid!
Don't you let me down Do-yoon. I've been let down by blue-haired characters before.
What's the deal with Ju-hee and her crush on Tae-yi? He's clearly not interested, and the brother seems pressed about it.
Tae-yi, you are too much, dude.
Well...you can't fall in love if you ain't clumsy...
This bully dude has the worst sister complex I think we've seen from K-BL.
Se-heon's brother really said, "Don't have friends. They get in the way of practice," like that was entirely normal and acceptable behavior. Goddamn.
Ah, back to the weak dribbling skills in QL.
Do Korean schools not have air conditioning?
Now he wants Se-heon to play? Bro, make up your mind!
Well, that was rude! Lie to God, don't lie to me! You loved his playing.
Ew, the bully is putting hands on Se-heon.
Idk about this one. The vibes are off. Maybe it's me being less keen on bullies, and also not being a huge fan of enemies to lovers.

Weak Hero Character Names
For those who don't know, the Weak Hero webtoon anglicized a bunch of the characters' first names from Korean to English. They don't do this for newly introduced characters anymore AFAIK, but all the names they anglicized initially have been kept that way.
Since I've gotten a few people asking about the names, so I decided to compile a list of their original Korean names. You can find amost of these on their character profiles on the Weak Hero fandom page, but I figured people would appreciate having a quick reference that is all in one place. Hopefully this helps people learn/connect their original names.
Remember, this is not a full character list, it's for finding the Korean names of the characters that had their names anglicized.
The format will be:

@tragcdysewn :  sender  invites  receiver  to  dance .  ( mya & se ju )
out of instinct, se ju starts to wave the other off when he stops himself. he’d rather sit and drink rather than dance, but at the same time, it isn’t as if he’s given many opportunities to dance in the first place. “i’ll warn you...” he eventually begins, a gentle sigh leaving his lips as he rises from his seat. “i’m a writer, not a dancer. so i wouldn’t expect anything special, if i were you.”

Headcanons about lesser known hunters!
Jung Ye-rim and Han Se-mi know each other first and both were shocked upon discovering they became healers.
Gina and Lee Bora wanted Park Hee-jin to come with them to the Hunters Guild, but Hee-jin declined for some reason.
Seo Ji-woo never holds back her tremendous strength whenever she gets excited, hence whenever she tends to high five someone, she leaves a huge burning red mark on the skin.
Nam Chae-young is a skater and a graffiti artist.
Son Ki-hoon is often the victim of Seo Ji-woo's strength.
Gina hates it when her outfit gets dirtied, whether it's from the hunters or monsters.
Before coming home, Han Se-mi always buy something for her family. It has always been her habit, though the more she spends in the dungeons, it becomes an underlying fear that she might not come back one day.
Park Hee-jin prefers simplistic clothes, but once she's with Gina, she'll be forced to choose something more stylish.
Son Ki-hoon being the one who gets to carry shopping bags for the girls, but hey! They buy him milkshake as a gratitude.
Lee Bora collects tarot cards.
Kim Chul admires Baek Yoon-ho a lot.
Son Ki-hoon backstabs Choi Jong-in sometimes.
After dealing with the dungeon break, Nam Chae-young apologized to Lee Ju-hee for yelling at her and comforted her as she listened to the reason why the healer had acted that way.
If she has enough, Park Hee-jin won't hesitate to hit Kim Chul with her staff.
Seo Ji-woo enjoys scaring the heck out of Son Ki-hoon.
Jung Ye-rim is the epitome of sunshine.
Son Ki-hoon takes his responsibility as a leader seriously and his main fear is failure.
Son Ki-hoon used to have a small crush on Park Hee-jin, but faded away when he got busy with raids.
Gina is very straightforward that some people got intimidated by her, yet she is actually friendly around the ones she trusts and checks up on them.
