2023 Halloween funny moments.
Bit of a different kind of post than normal, but I just wanted to share with the world.
I answer my door each year on Halloween (In the UK) with my many, many animals (snakes, lizards, spiders, ect), and these are some of the best responses I've gotten to each animal this specific year:
With pictures!
So trigger warning for snakes/lizards/cockroaches/tarantulas.
Lizard (Bearded dragon) (adult) - Is that a gecko? - Oh mum look, it's a... it's... a dinosaur? - Oh wow, that's cool. It's a Komodo lizard thing, right? - Mum! Mum look! He has an armadillo-thingy! - Oh my teacher used to have one of those. It died, I think. - It licked me IT LICKED ME I'M GOING TO DIE - Oh my God it's ACE, HI ACE I KNOW YOU (People know my lizard more than me..)
Tumblr media
~
Snake (Royal 'ball' Python) (adult) - Holy SHIT - Get that thing away FROM MEEEE - Why would you own one of those. Respectfully, Mr.. snake.. owner, sir? - That's one wicked worm my guy - Is it a boa constrictor? I know snakes really well. - I WANNA HOLD IT MUM CAN I HOLD IT PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - I like snakes. They like violence, like me. ("Oh, actually he's very shy and gentle...") I don't like this snake. - MUM IT'S THE SNAKE MAN! (I'm well known in these parts as the 'reptile man' haha)
Tumblr media
~ Snake (Hognose snake) (adult) - Why can't I hold this snake? ("Because he's very mean. He eats children") *cries* ("Only bad children, I promise!") *cries harder* - He's ginger! Ewwww! - He's very small... But it's the personality that counts, hey mate? - It's a cornsnake! With a.. oh. It's nose is deformed. Was it inbred?
Tumblr media
~ Tarantula (Nhandu Chromatus/Brazillian Red 'n' white) (adult) - FUCK NO. FUCK. NO. - PISS OF YA DAFT CUNT (To the spider, not me... I think?) - Is it fluffy? Like a dog, I mean. It looks spiky, like a hedgehog. - Can I hold it? ("No, I'm sorry, they're fragile) Wow I've been lied to I thought they were tough as hell. - You, yeah both of you, you've got issues. - It looks like a Tony or something. Is it called Tony? - That fuckers bigger than my face, you feed him fingers or something?
Tumblr media
~ Tarantula (Brachypelma hamorii/Mexican red knee) (baby) - Oh my God... You know what? That's kind of cute. - Mum, can we get one? "Fuck no, Tyler." - It's... what exactly does it do ("Nothing?") well that's boring. - It at least looks cuter than the house-spider I let stay in the corner of my room. He's called Terry.
Tumblr media
~ Madagascan hissing cockroaches (adults) - Why would you own these. - Oh these are those hissing ones... Why aren't they hissing? - It bit me ("It's just her legs holding on") damn gurl you got some daggers on your feet - Can I steal them - Can I eat them - Can I take a selfie with them? - What are their names? ("Oh they're named after Mario princesses-") DAMN where's Princess Peach? PEACH?? PEACH WHERE ARE YOU?! (Don't worry, he found Peach, Peach is the third one. Yes, I can tell them apart)
Tumblr media
~
Just a small reminder that I am an actual professional with these animals and I don't recommend doing this for Halloween unless you know what you're doing and, more importantly, know your animal (especially with tarantulas!). I did not let any child or adult hold my tarantulas nor my hognose (They're venomous, even if it's a small dose, allergic reactions may occur), and I know my python well enough to know he'll never strike, same with my beardie.
These are, also, not the only animals I have. I have thirteen in total :)
Just a lil notice! All fun though! Hope you enjoyed!

Zophobas Darkling Beetle and Madagascar Hissing Cockroach Exhibits - Zophobas morio & Gromphadorhina portentosa
The showcase before you is my follow-up to my last visit to the ROM to see the insects (and the T. rex exhibition) and is the second double showcase to appear on this blog since Halloween’s autumnal insect post in the sunshine.
Since these insects have appeared on this blog several times before, there’s little new information to add to their respective pages, but the Zophobas Beetles and Hissing Cockroaches are certainly worth re-examining, and so they can share the spotlight together. Beginning with the latter, they continue to lounge along their habitat of wood chips and log pieces, most sitting at rest aside from the female individual helping herself to the vegetable plate and a large male occupying the water bottle. If you lead a Cockroach to water, can you make him drink? Yes, with the “cotton wick” method. The plug made of fluff is designed to optimize use of the Roaches’ mouthparts and drink water absorbed by the fluff, rather than lapping it up in droplet form. Water dishes seemingly would work too if all the specimens are large-sized. As these crunchy detritivores primarily obtain moisture from the plant matter they eat the water is supplementary, but definitely necessary as the bits of broccoli, apple and carrot dry out with provoked exposure to the terrarium lights above.
Onto the Darkling Beetles now! Unlike their lounging Roach neighbors, the Darklings were quite active during this visit! There were only a few individuals on the edges of the terrarium, including what appears to be a mating pair (find them on Pictures 2 and 4). Surprisingly, among all the dark, armored shells, there was an active Superworm! The larvae should get along with the adults and without other larvae nearby, it may pupate soon. On the off chance someone reads this and then visits the ROM’s insects, keep an eye out for a pale exoskeleton that is wide at the head and narrowing towards the abdomen. Upon emergence from the exuvia, the new adult begins pale and gradually darkens. With an average pupation time of 2 weeks, all eyes need to be on that Superworm! Meanwhile, looking at the active adults we see most of them moving around their vegetable plate and settling on the best spot to eat a bit of salad or apple. It’s very efficient that both Darklings and Hissing Roaches have a similar diet, and (humorously) neither have the wherewithal to consider what the scorpion next door eats. It looks peaceful during feeding, but even vegetarians can get territorial and aggressive under the right circumstances. Without horns, elaborate mandibles or carnivorous instincts, I wonder what happened to the Darkling Beetle in Picture 3 that would result in an exposed abdomen and open wingcase. Any suggestions?
Pictures were taken on May 16, 2023 with a Google Pixel 4. Please come and see the bugs if you can. The ROM doesn't pay me to say this. I just think their live insects (and natural history section) are worth exploring and learning about.

Christmas Ornament Catalog
I had a friend over for Thanksgiving and we put up the tree on Black Friday. As we were decorating they kept having to ask us where each ornament went and interpret our frequently contradictory instructions, and my sister said "Ko I thought we had set rules but you've made me realize it is a weirdly specific case-by-case system." It made me think of all of the family stories and tradition and life that goes into the tree.
The Glass Hummingbird
Top of the tree
A gift from Grandmama Denise from the Greenbriar in West Virginia
Tumblr media
Glittery Katie Ornament
Mid to low, side or front of the tree
Homemade by Katie in 2004
Tumblr media
This is my favorite picture of me as a baby- my eyes look like blueberry colored pits in my head it’s terrifying.
Small White Owl
High on the tree
A gift from Grandma Harriet to Dad
Tumblr media
Porcelain Cherub with Gold Accents, one of five
Mid to high on the tree, far from each other
A gift from Grandma Denise to Mom
Tumblr media
For a few years there my grandmother would buy these inexpensive angel ornaments and give them to my mother and her sister every single Christmas. Mom sounded fondly annoyed when explaining this.
Glitter Spider Tree Ornament
Mid back of the tree
A gift from Dad to Abbi
Tumblr media
It’s because she had a pet fishing spider named Daisy at the time. This is only the second most terrifying pet Abbi ever had placed in her room by my father. The first were the Madagascar hissing cockroaches, which were an actual horror story to have in the home.
Orange Peel Angels, one of a matching set
Mid on the tree, far from each other
Bought by Mom from Ten Thousand Villages, made by artisans in Colombia
Tumblr media
These make everything in the box they get stored with smell like oranges to this day.
Wizard of Oz Rainbow Ornament, part of a set of two
Mid of front of the tree
Bought by Mom for Abbi
Tumblr media
Nightmare Before Christmas Mayor
Mid to high on the back of the tree
A gift from Mom to Dad
Tumblr media
Nightmare before Christmas is my Dad’s favorite Christmas and Halloween movie. One year we were at the Petco and he found chew-toys, like the ones for dogs, that had all of Boogie’s Boys’ faces and one of the Mayor’s and bought them as decor to go up on the mantle.
Silver Wizard
Low front of the tree
Bought by Mom for Abbi and Katie from Pier 1
Tumblr media
Wooly Sheep
Bottom side of the tree
Bought by Mom for Abbi and Katie
Tumblr media
By far the softest ornament we have. Mom bought it specifically to have ornaments that the cats couldn’t break that she could hang low on the tree.
Acorn, one of a set of five
Anywhere, spread out from one another
A gift from Abbi to Mom from an antique shop in 2021
Tumblr media
Abbi's clay angel
Back middle of the tree
Handmade by Aunt Barbara
Tumblr media
Purple Spirals
Cover, in any tall empty spots
Bought by Mom from the Cheshire Cat antique store
Tumblr media
We went on a shopping trip with her around 2014 after she bought a purple tree skirt and wanted more ornaments to match it.
Dirty Sock Snowman
Bottom back of tree
Handmade by Grandma Harriet
Tumblr media
“Mom, I know you did not just hang that dirty sock lookin’ snowman at the very front of tree like that’s where he belongs.”
“Don't say that about him Grandma Harriet made him for us!”
“Yeah out of the dirty sock off of her own foot!”
Dude-man's sand dollar, one of a set of two
Front low on the tree
A custom made gift from Ms. Laura to Mom from a Crabtree Valley Mall kiosk in 1989.
Tumblr media
We have another that looks like my Dad’s old cat Simon that my Mom bought for him a different year.
The Apples
Cover, in any empty colorless or empty spaces
Antiques from Grandma Denise to Mom when she first moved out
Tumblr media
The black airplane
Top of the front of the tree
A gift from Grandma Harriet to Dad
Tumblr media
Aunt Sharon’s ugly-ass pink bear egg
Mid to bottom back of the tree
Handmade by Aunt Sharon in 1998
Tumblr media
This is by far the most hideous ornament we own, undeniably one of the most memorable.
Gold-tipped lute-playing angel
Front, mid on tree
A gift from Grandma Denise (also during her angel kick)
Tumblr media
Star square Abbi
Eye-level on the tree
A gift from Aunt Lisa to Mom, photo taken in a shoot from the daycare
Tumblr media
Star Plush Santa
Bottom of the tree
A gift from Aunt Kimmy to Mom for Abbi's first Christmas
Tumblr media
Bonus:
The Christmas Slug
Tumblr media
❗NOT❗ allowed on the tree!
The Best Gift
Tumblr media
Under the tree. Always. She’s difficult to reach. Bear please come out we have to put the lights on.

person bedridden because of a black hole swirling inside of their stomach. this black hole will inevitably consume everything near and around it, but for now its concentrated into one singular area. this person (me, to make it more clear) will now recall niche & unimportant facts about themselves to anyone going out of their way to read these. hi there
1. they eat donuts in a weird way. essentially, they eat the entire perimeter before ripping the donut in half and eating one half & then the other. apparently this pattern was built because their mother would eat donuts this way; also bagels. they don’t eat bagels this way, which makes for an odd feeling.
2. when they were younger, there would be extended periods of time where they would have a small, somewhat high pitched squeak of sorts leave their throat. this was an interesting noise to make.. it was also peculiar. this pattern still pops up now and again. as to why, they’re unsure. what they do remember is that it felt like a compulsion to make the noise & they distinctly remember feeling as if when they were younger that if they didn’t make the noise something bad would happen. this is a rather telling sign of compulsive tendencies from childhood
3. as remembered from previous night ramblings aloud to themself and fits of awful irony, they remember being a young child and being given the opportunity by their 4th grade teacher to talk about the weather. this was the same teacher who had madagascar hissing cockroaches in their classroom, if they remember right. they remember having a blast of a time doing this. they still have a video on their google drive of one of these recordings..
4. more irony here, they remember liking a certain character mentioned on the dead meat podcast as a younger individual and distinctly remember finding them quote, interesting. they hadn’t watched the movie they were from until later on in life. this feels jarring to write.
5. when their old neighbors were still around, they remember asking their neighbors child named zee (college aged, should clarify) about their friends. zee was, and still is, extremely nice. they would hang out with this person often. they were like an older sibling they never had, in a way. because of this, items from adolescence and items zee would enjoy, like overwatch or fran bow, are seen as immensely nostalgic. markiplier is one of the content creators which was from this time they remember. dead by daylight is nostalgic as well. their original point with this story is that they once had a discussion with zee about sexuality. they were a child, then. zee asked them what they themselves thought they could be. they said pansexual, as they thought gender didn’t matter to them. they then proceeded to draw the huntress from dead by daylight, along with zee’s friends.
6. speaking of zee, there was another point during adolescence which they remember. they had a sleepover upstairs, and remembered zee playing overwatch with its halloween edition. they were playing reaper with a certain headless horseman inspired skin equipped. this person was a integral part of their childhood. they still have the rainbow alpaca zee gave them as they moved out of their parents house. they still cry when they see it. other trinkets have sadly been lost to time, but that alpaca is one thing which continues to exist as a memory of someone which shaped the person they became.
7. although it is truly hard to say, they remember being in middle school and finding a person they knew fascinating. they were both in the GSA club for their school. they thought this person had a very pretty face. they then proceeded to connect back with this person again in high school. they never forgot what they looked like.
thats all the emotional vulnerability i have at the moment. take these snapshots of my life and infer as you will!
