After properly waking up (and finally not having any more wake up for the race till Vegas, WE DID IT), here’s a bit if my analysis of the race, which is my favourite so far, a bit even more than Japan, because of its chaos and emotions
First, hometown hero. Zhou was not driving the car based on anything, other than pure emotion. He was living his dream in a way that I wish everyone could one day, honestly I’ve been emotional since that sprint shootout when he reached SQ3 and so proud that he is making history and realising his dream. On a more technical aspect, Sauber meed to get their shit together, the car is not good, and the fact that we celebrate them having a pit stop less than 5 seconds is so disappointing. They need to get it together to get points and be in that fight.
Nico Hulkenberg is a Goat, there I said it. The way he is taking that Haas places is just phenomenal, and honestly I think he deserves a proper team, and he so deserves to be on a podium, more than just one time. Kevin had an okay race, except of course, for ruining Yuki’s. But if K-Mag did not get his shit together, Ollie very easily could replace him next year, especially since Komatsu is no Guenther, and he will not have the mentality of fucking the youngster over.
RB’s weekend was going very well, in terms of race not sprint, that sprint was not great, but the circuit is not for them, and it’s Yuki’s first time there, so an off weekend (a normal one) was not going to be the worst thing in the world. But the way the race played out, with Kevin knocking Yuki out if the race with a stupid crash, destroying his race, and then Fernando locking up and hence lance knocks Daniel out with a crash that was so easy to prevent if he was focused on the car in front of him instead of the apex during the time of a safety car returning to the pit, the pack all close together and still getting up to speed. Yeah, that sucked for them, Daniel especially who was in contention of points. But other than that, the strategy was kind if fucked up, but it could have been saved at the end if it were not for both Astons.
As I said last race week, the Alpines are slowly but surely getting better. They started having pace today, and even if it were anyone else other than Nico, Esteban could have gotten points, but Nico Masterclass. This season is showing who is the leader of the French team, and it’s Estie. He’s extracting every single once if pace in that car, even if there isn’t any, and is showing that he’s the one. Pierre, tbh is getting better as well, but not to the Esteban level of almost Q3 and potentially points. Actually I feel like Pierre has not given much (expect for the Dutch GP last year) where he’s showing that the move to Alpine was a right choice for him.
George is impressive, and I hate to say it, more that Lewis is. He’s getting out everything out of the car, and I feel is working harder to keep Mercedes alive this season, with both the sprint and the race, with snagging that last point in the sprint from a shit quali, to an impressive performance in a track that doesn’t suit the new Mercedes cars, and trying his damn best all weekends, I’m genuinely impressed and proud of him, especially with the way he’s working to show the team that he could be a leader. Meanwhile I feel like Lewis is just trying to finish the year to go to Maranello, granted he’s trying, but I feel George is working harder.
McLaren, I have mixed emotions, Oscar was okay, again his first time on that track, but when compared to Lando, he did okay, not great. Lando was actually phenomenal, pulling that one stop, and doing so well in that, holding Checo back almost half of the race, he should be extremely proud of himself. And on that note, I love seeing Adam Norris down when Lando and Max are on the podium, I feel he’s proud of his son, but also Max, and I am just so happy and giddy
Ferrari, Idk what to feel. On one hand, Charles was phenomenal, but on the other, all these plans just give me anxiety, again, pulling that one stopper, but Checo got him, in a track that doesn’t feel of seem suited for the car, actually impressed. Carlos however, seemed to have gotten in his head, from saying yesterday that if he got Max he would have won the sprint, to the unnecessary fight with Charles on the sprint, he’s getting cocky, and that won’t help his situation of getting into a good team next year.
Red Bull, I AM SO FUCKING IMPRESSED AND I CANNOT BEGIN TO SAY HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS TEAM AND AM SO PROUD OF THEM. Max was just phenomenal, despite the sprint quali that was apparently not so great because the car was not set up for rain. Simply because the forecast didn’t show much rain. As for the race, damn I can’t believe the team did that, 2 perfect double stacks with a total pit stop time of 8 for changing 16 tyres. The pit crew are the actual heroes today. Checo you could see that he’s disappointed, and that shows how much he’s comfortable in the car, and how at one he is with the team, in addition to knowing the stakes at hand. But nonetheless, he was phenomenal in a weekend that according to him, wasn’t great. But yeah, this race was just amazing and chaotic and tbh, I love this chaos. And up next Miami, what will each one do, especially since Max never got pole there (just like Jeddah). We shall see
(Also, hoping the girls next race have a good weekend, especially the Red Bull girls, not because they’re Re Bull, I’ve been impressed by Hamda since COTA last year, and I called she’ll be the RBR girl)
I have nothing to add to any of this, so I'll just leave it in all its glory as it is. ❤️

Steppy’s thoughts on Drive To Survive Season 5:
Please take into account that some of the things might not be corresponding to the actual episode, but I forget things so bare with me 💀 also I’ll try to make this as short as I can because I talk too much 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- The way Guenther and Gene got rid of Mazepin… they were waiting for that 💀
- Mazepin getting called “Mazapan” 😭
- The way Guenther and Gene spoke about Mick was just not it. You can be mad that your driver isn’t performing the way you want him to in a shitty car, but human decency shoukd always come first. Fuck them. Fuck Haas and fuck everyone except Kevin. Fuck Nico just in case.
Episode 2: Mercedes principal Toto Wolff works to combat the team's unexpected struggles, while Lewis Hamilton navigates a bumpy ride in the team's redesigned car.
- BUMPY RIDE LMFAO
- Horny telling Toto to change his fucking car? My favorite moment of this whole season.
- Toto really went all psycho on them because they didn’t want to help him 😭 like bro, if everyone else but you was able to somehow fix their proposing issues, that’s your problem only.
- When he tried to use the “safety” speech and Mattia wasn’t having it? Hilarious. Mattia lowkey said “your team’s safety is not my problem”.
- Whenever George opened his mouth: 😐
Episode 3: Ferrari drivers and decision-makers feel the pressure of high expectations at a star-studded new event in Miami and a game-changing race at Silverstone.
- Whenever Charles spoke I felt a pain in my heart. I’m a Max fan and all, but I like Charles and I feel that his team failed him miserably. He deserves better so I hope Ferrari doesn’t fuck him up again. I don’t want him to win but yeah 😭
- I forgot about the Monaco “stay out, stay out”, if I was Charles I would’ve yelled at them. I don’t care.
Episode 4: Crashes and costs mount for Haas as driver Mick Schumacher fights to live up to his father's racing legacy and proves his worth to the team.
- When I tell you I cried almost the whole episode I’m not even joking.
- Y’all know how much I love and adore Mick, and you know that I’ve said that his performance wasn’t the best, but the way the team treated him? That’s fucking disgusting. How do you expect someone to be motivated when all you do is break him down? The fact that Kevin was the only person who believed in him is so sad and tells us all we need to know about Haas as a team.
- Guenther’s comments were just not it. I don’t care if you wanted him out, but no one deserves to be treated this way.
- When Max started talking about him I BAWLED my eyes out, and when they showed baby Max with Michael, tears kept falling and they didn’t stop. Plus he gave me baby fever LMAO.
- Max can’t even leave me alone on an episode that’s not about him.
- When Mick said his last name is a blessing and not a curse like many said? He said fuck you in every single language possible.
- Love Mick. Fuck Haas.
Episode 5: Otmar Szafnauer's efforts to overhaul Alpine bear fruit, until a new round of driver musical chairs throws his plans for the future into question.
Episode 6: Daniel Ricciardo's future starts to look uncertain when McLaren team managers set their sights on new talent, while Alpine weighs the best way forward.
- THESE TWO EPISODES 😮
- Fucking Nando making me laugh the whole thing. Man couldn’t give less of a fuck.
- The DRAMA was insane, and Bear became my new favorite DTS member.
- I feel like Mclaren is a good opportunity for Oscar but I totally understand Otmar being pissed. They spent 4M on the guy for him to just zayn like that.
- Pierre being chosen over Daniel by Alpine wasn’t because they think he was better but because he was most affordable. Daniel might not be delivering as expected but man is expensive af.
Episode 7: As the Red Bull team pushes to build on its lead against Ferrari, all eyes are on Sergio "Checo" Pérez during a dramatic Monaco Grand Prix.
- Dramatic Monaco Grand Prix? More like Ferrari being Ferrari and fucking up another Grand Prix.
- Checo reacting the same way I did when Seb decided to be funny.
- My theory about Carlos ALWAYS being on the podium whenever something crazy happens was proven right AGAIN.
- Checo saying his family is the most important thing and talking about his wife after cheating on her 💀 + the damage control made with scenes from their wedding, funny af. No one will forget it, but good try Checo.
- Max talking about the pressure of being a Red Bull driver when he’s the pressure 😭
Episode 8: When Pierre Gasly announces he's leaving Alpha Tauri, Yuki Tsunoda faces losing a teammate and a friend.
- Yuki farting next to Pierre at any chance he got 😭
- You know I’m not Pierre’s biggest fan but the way he talked about Yuki made my heart melt. You can see he actually cares about him. After all, he did say he was like a little brother to him.
- Yuki saying that he’s not a rookie anymore and that he’s ready to lead the team 👀 I hope he does though, I’d love to see that and I’d love to see him prove us all wrong.
- Nyck saying he’s going to bring maturity to the sport and me wheezing because I FUCKING FORGOT HE’S ALMOST 30 😭
- Yuki almost crying when Pierre was giving him a motivational talk.
Episode 9: With both championships within reach, Red Bull's team faces incendiary accusations that they've cheated by violating a league-wide spending cap.
- “We didn’t cheat” - Horny.
- “Turns out we exceeded the limit” - Horny, 5 seconds later.
- Toto going one by one trying to stir shit up and the only one who ended up doing something about it was Zak.
- Mattia going all “it wasn’t me” on Horny and gaslighting him into thinking that if he thought he did something was because he was guilty.
- Max saying that those things basically don’t concern him. King behavior.
- Zak laughing about his letter but then going silent and pissed when Max won again and Red Bull became champions 😭
- Helmut going “okay” when Horny told him to go and get the trophy.
- Fucking Jos ignoring Miss Racist in Austin 💀
- Max saying the team deserves it and then hugging the team 🥹
Episode 10: The 2022 season hurtles toward a conclusion in Abu Dhabi, where Ferrari fights to hold off Mercedes and McLaren hopes for a miracle to overtake Alpine.
- Not much to say here.
- Mercedes being Mercedes. I felt bad for Lewis though.
- Turns out I was half asleep when I watched Abu Dhabi because I didn’t remember shit from that race.
- Fucking Alonso saying bye again and saying he’s happy to leave 😭
- Seb saying he doesn’t know what it feels like to be away from the sport. Cried again.
- Daniel’s little tribute 🥹😭 I’m going to miss that idiot so so much.
-
That was basically it. I hope you enjoyed this masterpiece ❤️

Friendship bracelets & fan-cams - The 'fangirlification' of Motorsports
It’s no secret that motorsports and sports in general are seeing a surge in popularity. Formula One enjoyed a crowd of 1.3 million watching the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a brand new track with no history. But is this due to organic interest in the sport? Out of these 1.3 million, how many turned the race on for the first time with no expectations except to see fast cars zip through a street circuit? Or did they watch with an expectation, with the basic knowledge that can only come from consuming content on social media?
Shows like Drive to Survive (Formula One) and There Can Only Be One (MotoGP) have a reputation to be dramatized, fans of the shows labeled as ‘DTS fans’ and not true fans of the sport. This, unfortunately, is a common occurrence in many fan circles, affecting mainly women and younger fans, pushing them away from the sport. Mention your interest in Formula one or MotoGP around a certain group and expect to be quizzed on what DRS stands for or on what happened in Sepang between Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. Name a popular driver and brace yourself to be accused of liking them for their looks.
But there has been a change, not a sudden one, but a change that has been long coming.
The online fan-spaces of sports have slowly filled by more women, sharing their opinions, ‘live-tweeting’ and ‘live-blogging’ their reactions. It’s become a trend to make races an event with bracelet trading and painted shirts. This isn’t anything new, Japanese fans are known to flood Suzuka with intricate hats, each bigger than the last. The Tifosi (fans of historic team Ferrari) are known to come dressed in elaborate costumes. Popes, Priests and many more religious figures flock to Imola and Monza to bless the Ferrari Drivers. You can joke that Charles Leclerc enjoys a fan-base of mostly younger women, but the dedication Italian men show to him cannot be topped.
Even the teams and the sport itself are embracing the new attention from their fan circles. Duracell, battery manufacturers and sponsors of the Williams F1 team, have jumped in head first, posting ‘fan-cam Fridays’ of drivers Alex Albon and Logan Sargent. Ferrari has even joined in, fans joking that the team posts ‘thirst traps’ of the drivers when they don't live up to standards. MotoGP takes a more subtle route, their latest campaign ‘under the skin’ an intimate look into the scars and tattoos of the riders. But the upturned eyes and soft lighting feels less than educational.
But is this a healthy path for the sport to go down? Should the sport rely on their drivers' looks and marketability to gain fans instead of pushing innovation and talent? It's a gray area at best. The days of proclaimed playboy Jenson Button prove that looks and talent can be balanced. But BrawnGP wasn't posting Jenson in an ice bath after a tough race.
If we are exploring the marketability of teams and its pitfalls we have to discuss Haas and Guenther Steiner. Moneygram Haas Formula One was once a pool of potential, the only American team on the grid. Haas could have been the envy of the grid, pride of the American fans. But Haas sits comfortably towards the back of the grid, known for Lego brick cars, the phoenix called Romain Grosjean and their Ex-team principal Guenther Steiner. Driver to Survive captured Guenther as a character in the paddock, with his colourful language and quotable sentences. Newer fans were swayed by his portrayal and then ultimately disappointed when their underdog lost to the dominant Max.
In the end, none of it matters. The sport is ever evolving and will always be evolving. The beloved Halo, saviour of many, was once seen as a curse. Only time will tell if the ‘fangirlification’ will bring the sport down or uplift it. It's not about the race to create the perfect sport, but more about the history and community built from it.
Yes Max Verstappen may be dominating the grid, but off-grid the real winners are the fans, watching history be made, and even be part of it.

I think y/ns dad would treat mick as if it was his own child, absolutely defending him at all costs, like imagine him defending mick against guenther??? im living for it
Tw: haas
"We can sit here, the race is about to start", you nudged your parents to sit in the garage's sofas, looking out to the pit as you looked for your boyfriend's car on the screens. It had been tough the last couple of days, Mick having found out that Haas wasn't certain if they were keeping him for the upcoming season, and this weekend, with all the changes they had made to the car, the progress was not going the way they expected, which left a weird environment around.
Mick had been driving as best as he could with what he had, and when he was called back to change his tyres, your mother was the first to comment on it, "is that a good idea? Everyone else seems to be going the opposite way", while your father nodded his head, "I don't know, these cars all behave differently, you can't even compare them", you mumbled.
Some issue in the car in front of Mick's and some debris from a previous crash managed to get into the car, compromising its performance as your boyfriend sent another weekend without points, looking defeated as he exited the car, taking off his helmet and balaclava as he spoke to Gary, "I'm sorry we couldn't do more for you, Mick", he apologised as the driver was about to reply to him, the team principal barged in, "we really can't keep having this weekend in weekend out, we have to score points!", Steiner said, and while some employees just left him to his devices, Mick actually tried to have a conversation with him until some offensive accusations started being thrown in your boyfriend's way, making you step a little closer to him, "I feel like this is not helping, so maybe another day? He has media duties now", you tried as the older man looked at you, "and do you think I care? God knows how bad this has been! No one fucking delivers, a-", Steiner raised his voice at you, making everyone look at you.
"Whatever it is you're dealing with, deal with it. But don't take it on my daughter, or much less on Mick. Let alone everyone else here. They're trying to do the best job they can. It's not their fault the car doesn't go as fast as you want. And, please, start treating people properly. Mick is an excellent driver and you're failing to support him and help him develop, and in all honesty, not having him here next year will be the best thing for him, because I'm sure you're not going to be any better, but he will", your father defended, the calm yet assertive way he spoke with surprising the team principal as you all turned your back, Mick heading to change for his duties.
As soon as he was done with interviews, he caught up with your father while you had gone to the bathroom with your mother, "Thank you for defending me. I don't want to seem rude, or something else that I am not, but these environments are really hard, and he's not the best person when it comes to... people I guess...?", Mick said as your father chuckled, "Mick, you don't deserve to be treated like this. You're talented and you will do it one day. Maybe it will take time, buy you'll get there, I know you will", your father said as he hugged hour boyfriend, just in time as you got back, "having a hug? Without me?", you teased them before coming to hug both men before moving to just cuddle Mick, "but he's right, I know you'll get there one day, my love".
(Thank you for submitting an ask 🤍)

Do u reckon that Micheal Schumacher is disappointed with how Mick was in formula 1
Well, we know very little about Michael Schumacher’s life now, but based on what I know of him from the racing and post-racing days, I imagine he’d be somewhat disappointed with how Mick’s F1 career panned out.
I don’t think you can ever be disappointed in your child for not being better than their best. As long as they’re doing everything they can do, what more can you ask? Michael seemed like an involved father but a supportive and loving one, I think would have known that. So I don’t think he would have been disappointed in Mick for not achieving better results. I think it’s clear Mick was doing what he could do. That said, with Michael’s continued coaching/influence Mick probably would have been a different driver. I know Seb was a mentor to him but I think having his dad around as he progressed through the junior formulas would have helped him develop his driving style and different habits, and maybe keep his head a bit more when he got to F1.
I think Michael would have been disappointed in Haas, but had Michael been around, I think the Haas experience would have been different. Guenther strikes me as a suck up and I think Mick would have had an easier time of it in that garage with his dad around. But you could argue that with Michael’s Ferrari connections, would Mick have ended up at Haas or would Alfa Romeo have taken him on? Who knows.
But yeah, I think to see Mick’s career come and go the way it’s looking likely it has, I think he would be disappointed. But more in the whole situation than in his son. Mick clearly did his best, he was disciplined and committed, handled himself with Grace under fire (arguably till recently). I don’t think any parent could be less than proud of that

Things that I want to see on this season of dts that won't be there:
Williams, in general (like Alex drove the wheels off that car and James Vowles asking permission to break the cost cap to upgrade their facility)
Esteban's podium (also his weirdly cursed season)
How brutal and unsafe Qatar was for the drivers
The dangerous end of Australia with people in the pit lane when they shouldn't be when the pit was still open with one car still having to do their mandatory pitstop as well as the restart at the end with the crashes and Carlos' penalty
An episode about the rookies (including Liam) and the pressure of coming into the sport where there's limited time to learn tracks (less free practices) as well as other rookie struggles
Yuki and his amazing job in the AlphaTauri dragging it to points and battling for it while showing he can be a team leader (while finally turning away from the narrative that all he does is crash and curse)
The lost podiums of Charles and Lewis
The negatives and positives of the Vegas GP (particularly about how dangerous Carlos' accident was)
Anything about Zhou (even something like how he felt returning to Silverstone because last season focused solely on George and not him??)
There's more that I think dts is going to miss, but I digress.
What I think we're going to get:
Guenther for way longer than Haas' season deserves
Christian Horner being unbelievably smug
Toto being weird and saying that Mercedes will be back and better

Surviving to Drive by Guenther Steiner reviewed | F1 reviews
Has Drive to Survive raised the profile of any individual in Formula 1 more than Haas team principal Guenther Steiner? Sure, Daniel Ricciardo became another favourite figure of the hit Netflix series. But when the Box to Box crew first sent their cameras into the paddock Ricciardo was already a grand prix winner and far better known than the leader of a team which was only in its third season. Steiner’s plain-spoken, unfiltered and often profane reactions to his team’s fluctuating fortunes certainly helped him become the unlikeliest break-out star of the series. But how well does that style come across in book form? In Surviving to Drive (you can see what they did there) Steiner retells the story of the 2022 season, adding in snippets of his backstory. This is all told in some approximation of his mannerisms familiar from a dozen DTS memes – in other words, heavy on the expletives, including over 300 uses of ‘fok’. That averages out at more than one per page. That’s not going to be to everyone’s tastes, though for me it was less of a problem than how forced the narrative feels. There’s no end of cheeky chappy what-is-he-like ‘Banter Steiner’, which starts to grate about three pages in, but other passages read like rehashed press releases. It’s repetitive, too, and not just in its self-references. Many of the recaps of 2022 races boil down to little more than luck going against them. Mentions of the ‘ongoing silly season’ crop up in close succession. The limitations of the style would be tolerable – just – if Surviving to Drive brought compelling new insights into the goings-on at Haas last year. But it adds little to what was reported over the course of 2022 and too often lapses into bland explanations of aspects of the season unrelated to the team. Its most enjoyable passages are the handful of anecdotes about the early stages of his career. Perhaps because the author assumes the reader is less familiar with the stories – and in spite of his apologies for including them – these are the most colourful and entertaining sections of the book. Steiner also lives up to his reputation of being unwilling to pull punches. Andreas Seidl gets some largely good-humoured stick, Ralf Schumacher the same but without the humour (and with his name misspelled). Surviving to Drive also stands out as being a rare example of an F1 team principal putting pen to paper at all, never mind while still an active competitor. That makes it an interesting case but given its other shortcomings is not enough to earn it a recommendation. The scale of hatred for Mick is just beyond human comprehension.
Yet an all American white teenager who supports a Constitution-violating man baby dictator in the making who would use violence to stay in power who at most is a "mid" in his F2 performance compared to the likes of Drugovich, Piastri, Pourchaire, Daruvala, Hauger, Doohan and Lawson gets zero hate and has less of a personality than most of last year's F2 grid.
Hate me if you will but I will never, ever allow an American poison F1 for what it's worth. Especially anyone closely associated to that dictator in the making of a former US President who insulted Canadians for being "too soft" and giving us Canadians a headache by spreading their trigger-happy mass shooting tendencies here.
As I have said before, as long as that American prick is in Williams, F1 2023 will be a shit ass of a season and I will be laughing with glee if Guenther Shitstainer blows up the entire Haas trailer in anger for not gaining any points this year.
Honestly I'd whack him but I'm a Christian and Tumblr doesn't like words like "kill or murder." 🤨😁
I'm in no way racist towards Americans but l am now because I have a co-worker who lives in Georgia and he is annoying as hell. Once I got in trouble for lobbing a tray in his face to shut him up about his flimsy constitutions.

-‘Still need to phone gene’
-‘We look like fucking idiots’ AGAIN
-Jamey boy is preaching to some higher power or something

-And Williams score again
-And we are again with a ‘Hi Gene’ phone call
-Claire I love you

-He looks so happy (probably wine drunk being in the vineyard and all) but he’s looks 10 years younger
-Just two grown men have a boozy lunch in a vineyard taking about life and moving on (my god this is some hallmark movie moment)
End scene! Bye Guenther! 🥺👋🏽

NOTES FROM THE PODCAST ‘F1: BEYOND THE GRID’ EPISODE WITH KEVIN
1. the story and feelings about his comeback
kevin, as everyone else, did not even think himself as an option to replace m*zepin. despite reading that m*zepin had lost his drive, he did not contact guenther or anyone else at haas to say he was interested - even when people from the paddock started messaging him and asking him if he was coming back.
kevin confirmed that he understood the team’s decision in 2020 and that he was told that it was purely a financial decision. he did not take it personally and left the team on good terms with everyone in haas. he also mentions that he was treated very well in the team throughout the years, he even calls the haas team his home in f1.
k-mag did say yes immediately to guenther, but told him that he had things he needed to sort out before the contract could be signed. the first thing kevin did was call louise, his wife, and despite her feeling worried about how much he would be away, she said he had to do it. it was very important to him that his wife was on board since he’s a dad and husband now and not just a racing driver.
2. talking about his family
kevin talked a lot about his daughter, laura, generally. but he talked about how sad he had felt that f1 and his daughter never overlapped since she was born january 2021 and he believed that 2020 was his last season. he talked about getting emotional seeing his daughter in the back of the garage in the mirror during his seat fitting. then she really wanted to get in the car with him, so she got in and pressed all the buttons on his steering wheel.
he is really happy that he got last year “off” as he calls it since he was able to spend a lot of time with laura and he says that he would not have traded it for anything. so the timing of losing his seat and then getting it back was actually perfect.
because his dad is not as busy anymore with racing, kevin believes that he will come to quite a lot of races. he said jan was very excited when he heard about kevin’s f1 return and is watching every session now that he has the opportunity.
3. talking about the car and his fitness level
he quickly got a good feeling about the car, it was predictable and easy to drive and definitely fast. he is glad that with his neck that he’s not in one of the old cars, saying this one is slower in the corners. he confirmed the 2022 cars require a slightly different driving style, but he is totally okay with that and that it is not a big change.
kevin believes that it will take him two more months of daily training to be where he should be physically. he did work out last year, but a lot less than when he was a f1 driver. he said that fitness is important in all racing and that it gives you those extra percent. but that driving sport cars and training a little less made him lose his strong neck quickly.
during qualification in saudi arabia, a nerve in kevin’s neck started to spasm and he physically could not hold his head up, it was just flapping around and it was very painful. he believes they could have started p5 if his neck had been stronger, which he believes would also have meant a better race result.
4. on the team and mick schumacher
kevin really likes mick. he says he is a super nice guy and down to earth, very polite and liked by everyone. kevin appreciates that mick is open and honest and not too proud to ask questions. he thinks that mick really deserves his place in f1 even if his last name had not been schumacher, and that mick has done more than enough to prove he belongs in f1 by winning both f2 and f3.
he is aware that he is seen as the team leader, but he says that he doesn’t really see himself as that. he just wants to do his best for the team and doesn’t expect any special treatment just because he is the most experienced of the two drivers. kevin also points out that mick is intelligent, so his feedback is good and the team also listen to mick, of course.
he is very open with mick and doesn’t hold anything back, which is the first time kevin has felt comfortable being 100% honest with his teammate. he sees it as a case where if he helps out mick, he helps the team, and that’s good for kevin too. and if his help does give mick what he needs to pass k-mag then kevin can learn from him and raise his own level.
5. on his personal growth
he feels as if his year away were actually ten years and then when he got back in the car, it felt like he had not really been away. he contributes a lot of his growth to everything that has happened outside the track. after becoming a father, his family is now the most important thing in his life. he admits that before his happiness was determined by how well he was doing in f1, but now that is not the case.
kevin believes that losing his seat in f1 was good for him, he survived walking away from f1 despite the fact that it had been the most important thing in his life for so long, and now he sees everything as a bonus, which means he can enjoy himself more as he is not scared of not being in f1 anymore. during the year away, he was able to look back at his time in f1 and be grateful rather than sad of not driving a f1 car anymore. and he got a new appreciation for the sport watching it as a fan and not experiencing it as a driver.
6. talking about IMSA and driving alongside his dad
one of his dreams was also to drive the iconic tracks his dad has driven like daytona, so he is happy that he got that experience. he also says that it meant he and his dad, jan magnussen, could talk about racing in a different way and that he could actually give kevin technical advice.
he also talked about how much a privilege it was to drive le mans with his dad and how crazy a place it was to have a father-son weekend. kevin also talked about how interesting it was to see a new side to jan because kevin knows him so well as his dad, but he got to see him as a racing driver and how fun it was to see all the data and compare and be racing nerds together.
7. on the future
kevin is dreaming about a podium but does not expect it since haas does not got the pace to beat the three big teams on pace alone, but if haas can be best of the rest then he says it as a possibility and admits he is thinking about it quite a lot.
he came to peace with the fact he was not going be a f1 wdc ever last year, but it is still his biggest dream, the ultimate goal, and he is excited for it to be a somewhat realistic dream again.

When Guenther had announced that Mick Schumacher was going to be joining the team - the whole of Haas were ecstatic. There were many ways to describe him, his kind and nurturing nature, his dedication to any job he sets out to do and his gentle manner that could put anyone at ease. As gutted as you were to not be Romain’s assistant going into the 2021 season, getting Mick was definitely going to make up for it. The day you were scheduled to meet him, to go over the pre-season press plan - you were excited to show him around, introduce him to the team and talk about the new challenges you were going to be facing together. What you hadn’t expected was the inability to form a proper sentence whenever he came near you - which, as his assistant proved to be less than practical.
“Hey, it’s lovely to meet you.” Mick had said when Guenther had introduced you that day.
“I - uh - likewise. I’m really looking forward to working with you this year.” You had stuttered. Never in your career before had you stuttered when introducing yourself - a pink flush creeped up your neck betraying you completely. Fortunately for your sake, Mick smiled innocently and shook your hand, when he clasped your hand in his you couldn’t help but feel your heart flutter.
Guenther watched on in amusement, obviously thoroughly enjoying the experience of you making a fool out of yourself.
After the tour - in which you had tripped over your words a fair few times - you said your goodbyes and trudged angrily up to Guenther’s office. Slouching on the chair in front of your desk, you sighed loudly. “What a day.” You uttered, pinching the bridge of your nose with your thumb and forefinger.
“How did it go?” Guenther asked, passing you a glass of water.
“I kept tripping over my words, to be completely honest with you it was slightly traumatic.” You replied honestly, taking the glass gratefully and taking a sip.
“You get the chance to work with Mick and you call it slightly traumatic?” Guenther mocked, the corner of his lips turning up.
“Tomorrow’s a new day - maybe I’m coming down with something.” You wiped your forehead in anguish.
As it turns out you were coming down with something but unfortunately it wasn’t really something that could be cured in a matter of days. You finally worked out what was wrong when Mick had asked you to grab a little bit of lunch with him before the first race in Bahrain. You had to keep reminding yourself that it wasn’t a date, it was for work and only work.
It was a well known fact that Mick was a heartthrob, a real life Prince Charming who drives cars for a living. His crystal blue eyes were seemingly easy to get lost in - perhaps that was half your issue. The way he was so softly spoken, lulled you into a trance. His mannerisms resembled that of a golden retriever pup and after that you realised - you were falling for Mick Schumacher.
You were sitting in a terraced cafe, looking over the city landscape near to where the track was. Picking on chips, as Mick asked about your career up to this point.
“What made you want to become an assistant?” He asked, passing you the plate of chips.
You picked one up and waved it at him, “I’ve always been in love with the sport and what better way to experience it first hand than work with the drivers. I could never have been one so join them, I suppose.”
“Did you ever race as a child then?” He asked, leaning onto his elbows, a lopsided grin plastered onto his face.
“I did for a while.” You nodded and took a bite of your chip.
“Maybe, during the summer break, we should go go-karting. Show me some of the good tracks in the UK.” He declared, completely oblivious to the effect it had on you. The familiar pink tinge that had gotten too used to creeping up onto your neck, the corner of your eyes crinkled as you gazed into his eyes.
“I would really like that.” You stayed transfixed, gazing longingly at him. If only he knew how you truly felt or even better - if he felt the same way. You knew he never could, at the end of the day he had been given an opportunity to drive in formula one and you knew he wasn’t going to let a girl he worked with distract him from that.
You cleared your throat and tore your eyes away from him - as much as it pained you - and stood up but as you turned back around, you realised that he was still watching you, his eyes glinted and the corner of his mouth quirked up.
“I suppose we should think about getting you back, wouldn’t want them thinking you’ve gotten lost.” You said, forcing a smile onto your face.
A few weeks later and it was time for the race in Imola, the rain was pouring down and the team’s strategists had re-grouped to come up with a strategy to fit in with the weather. Unlike for people at home, watching a wet race as part of a team was never enjoyable - the tensions thick throughout the race. Over the few weeks that you had been working with Mick, your feelings only grew stronger but since the season was well underway you found yourself spending more and more time with him. It was an impossible situation that you wished upon nobody.
You had never been good with nerves and that was clear as you paced up and down his room.
“Liebe.” It was his new nickname for you. “Why are you so stressed. When you start stressing, so do I and do you really want me to-” You stopped pacing and sat next to him, he placed his hand on your shoulder in an attempt to calm you. If anything it made you worse.
“I know, I’m sorry Mick.” You exhaled shakily and looked around the room. You had seen a fair few wet races in your time and not all of them had ended nicely, in fact the majority of the time someone ended up in the wall. “Racing in the rain always makes me nervous.” You looked down at your lap, toying with your fingers. You looked at him desperately, “Just promise me you will be careful.”
“Damn,” He whispered, “You know I was really considering driving off the track today. A little off-roading never hurt anyone.” He laughed at your horrified expression. “I’m only teasing, Liebe. You know I will be careful. Extra careful so I won’t get a telling off from you - or Guenther.” You allowed yourself to chuckle slightly, he nudged his knee with yours and tried to catch your eye but you deliberately avoided it, nibbling on your lip and furrowing your eyebrows.
He placed his finger under your chin and lifted it to meet his gaze then placing his hand either side of your face. Breath hitching in your throat and your heart having an absolute field day, you blushed profusely, once again unable to look away from his intense gaze.
“What’s on your mind?” He asked,  you could feel his breath fanning across your face. You shut your eyes, hands clammy and you didn’t know whether you could trust your voice.
“I care about you.” You managed to stutter, your eyes still closed. At least this way, you couldn’t see his expression when he realised.
“I care about you, Liebe, but you already know this-” He began carelessly.
“No, Mick.” You opened your eyes, his brows knitted. “I care about you more than I should.” Your tone was hushed, his eyes flickered with realisation, his mouth curved into a beaming grin. He moved his face so your lips were only a tantalizing distance from each other, “Why didn’t you say so sooner.” His lips brushed yours as he spoke and when you didn’t answer he closed the distance. Capturing your lips with his, it was like two puzzle pieces had been put together.
There was a knock at the door and the pair of you jumped apart - a voice called out: “Mick it’s time to head to the track.”
Reluctantly he got up, brushing down his race suit and held out his hand to help you up - instead of letting go once you got to your feet, he proceeded to pull you into his chest. “We shall talk about this after the race, Liebe.” He kissed the tip of your nose and walked out the door, leaving you lost for words behind him. You could still feel the ghost of his lips on yours, relishing in the events of a couple of moments ago - playing it over and over again in your head.
It was a tense 2 hours in the Haas garage - the race far from lacking action; with Latifi crashing into the wall on lap one then on lap four Mick losing the backend of his car whilst under the safety car and crashing into the exit of the pitlane. Fortunately with a new front wing he was able to carry on and finished the race 16th. They weren’t the only two to crash as Bottas and Russel came together - even Hamilton ran off the road. Imola was proving to be savage in the rain.
As soon as Mick crossed the finishing line, the whole garage relaxed, hugging and cheering. He had matched his result from Bahrain and managed to finish in front of Nikita. As far as Haas was concerned - it was a successful day. As his assistant you were to meet him at Parc fermé to take him to his weigh-in and post-race interviews. As soon as he saw you he took his helmet off and wrapped you into his arms, your feet coming off of the floor. You giggled and placed your hands either side of his face.
“I was as careful as I could be.” He assured, a smirk toying at the corner of his lips. You shook your head at him, your mouth curved into a wide smile.
“You did a good job.” You said to him, he wrapped his arms around your waist - pulling you closer into him. Then he dipped his face and connected your lips, rain falling around you. It was atmospheric and cheesy all at the same time.
There were wolf-whistles and cheers around you, as passing drivers walked by. You pulled your face away, both of your cheeks resembled tomatoes but it didn’t really matter. You knew you could never be happier with Mick by your side.
They say home is where the heart is and as long as you were with Mick - you were home.

Is Mazepin gone then? He can't pay for the Haas seat any longer right?
He's not - at least not according to FIA. Nikita Mazepin, citizen of nowhere, can still race.
Him (and Haas) can't display any "flag/symbol" related to Russia but the FIA doc doesn't say specifically if "names of sponsors" fall under that category. For all intents and purposes, Uralkali could still be slapped on the side of that Haas.
Also, Mazepin Sr. and his companies Uralchem/Uralkali etc. where not nominated in the sanctions (I went through the 26 names on the EU's journal, Dmitry is not listed), so besides the ruble being worth less than it did a week ago and Dmitry facing potential difficulties in signing off cheques for his son to race, Nikita would still be able pay for his seat.
The only question now is if Gene and Guenther can afford a PR nightmare like that and if they can get around the potential issues with having Nikita travel around the world with a Russian passport.

Rewatching Drive To Survive (12/20) → Boiling Point
"Last season, we made a big step upwards. We know that our opposition, they have got bigger budgets. It's very difficult to break into the top three. But nothing is impossible if you've got enough money and resources. [...] For a small team like Haas, we need to do a lot more with a lot less. So we need a different model to try to have success. In the beginning, we were questioned and critiqued and doubted because nobody had done it. [...] Having Rich Energy as a title sponsor is a good thing for us. We get some more money that will help us to move forward. Then to hopefully get on the podium." - Guenther Steiner
