Audra and Bernadette: The Last Remaining Ladies in Red

Audra McDonald vs. Christine Baranski Bebe Neuwirth vs. Bernadette Peters

It's just an objective fact that Audra and Bernadette are two of Broadway's foremost Divas. It's going to come down to this soon enough. But for now, here we are.

Audra and Bernadette overlapped just one episode on The Good Fight before Bernadette's character was carted off to prison (again, bigger Good Fight post later).

Along with an overflow of talent riches, Audra and Bernadette appeared on "Broadway for Orlando - What the World Needs Now is Love," a single release to raise money for the LGBT Center of Central Florida in the wake of the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting in 2016. Coincidentally, Bernadette and Audra featured in back-to-back solos. Divas included: Andréa Burns, Carmen Cusack, Judy Kuhn, Rebecca Luker, Andrea Martin, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Kelli O’Hara, Bernadette Peters, and Lillias White, among many other Broadway stars.

It's complete coincidence I continue to feature things that just so happen to contain Donna Murphy (thereby keeping her alive and well in this tournament).

Bernadette and Audra also starred in two separate film versions of Annie, based on the Broadway musical. Bernadette in the original 1982 version as Lily St. Regis (alongside Carol Burnett and Tim Curry, holy shit what a trio); Audra as Grace Farrell in the 1999 made-for-TV version, where her casting caused controversy for exactly the reasons you're assuming.

I favored the 1999 version myself, specifically because I was deeply in love with Audra, who was a young woman in her late twenties and already a three-time Tony winner.

Personality:

Emily initially comes off as quiet, free-spirited, and sweet. On the flipside, she can be aggressive, impulsive, and rebellious. She has a creative mind, high intellect, and possesses a photographic memory which makes it easy for her to remember massive amounts information. She is polite when the situation calls for it but can be rude when necessary.

Despite her gentle surface persona, Emily was shown to harbor sociopathic tendencies, able to commit small acts of violence when agitated or afraid. It is believed this is a combination of a genetic mental abnormality inherited from a maternal great-grandparent as well as acute PTSD from the childhood abuse she suffered at her half-brother's hands.

When she was a baby and she and her mother, Evelyn, were still residing with her father on the greaser side of town, Evey walked in on a two year old Johnny poking Emily with pins, culminating in the young mother fleeing into the night with her infant daughter. Whatever hostility or disappointment Evelyn's parents felt for their daughter's decision to breed with someone below her station disappeared upon seeing their granddaughter's face and the fear in their only daughter's eyes. Blythe and Thomas welcomed Evelyn back into their arms, taking she and Emily into their home, opting to help raise their grandchild, who was the apple of their eye.

As Royce Clayton's mother, Sarah, was Evelyn's best friend, the two children spent almost every day together, even sharing a bed during naps. Their friendship was cemented in stone when Emily was hospitalized at four years old after her half-brother, Johnny, who was two years older than them, threw her from a window during one of his half-sisters visits to see her father. When Johnny showed up with his father to visit her - despite clear warnings that her brother was to be kept away - Royce lost his temper for the very first time, attacking Johnny, culminating in the older boy's head going through a window, and Markus Sullivan being slapped with supervised visitation on the soc side of town.

Despite being exposed to his rage firsthand - and fully knowing that it would more than likely get worse, and not better as the years passed - Emily refused to turn her back on Royce, knowing even at her young age, that she wanted to be by his side for as long as he would let her. Emily later admits that she believed she loved him even then, before she truly knew what that type of love was. As the years passed, and their relationship deepened, and despite having three best friends that she loved very much, Royce was still her main confidant, scarcely away from her, constantly displaying physical affection. His constant presence - and people's genuine fear of inciting his temper - kept any interested parties away from her. At some point in 1955, the two entered a relationship, becoming engaged in 1957.

Royce's murder shattered Emily. The overwhelming grief she felt at his loss mixed with the burning rage at her half-brother for ripping him away proved too much for her to handle. She killed her brother and then slit her own wrists

We know some more about DC anthology starring Asian characters by Asian creators. Also, they revealed the alt-cover, which puts Cass Cain front and center.

Titulat Parade of Heroes is Katana story, but it wil lfeature Cyborg and Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes as supporting characters.

Gene Yang and Bernard Chang will introduce DC’s version of the Monkey King, who will debut helping Shazam fight Doctor Shivana.

Both Cassandra Cain (referred to not as Orphan but as Batgirl) and Damian Wayne will both get solo stories, former by Mariko Tamaki and Marcus To and latter by Aniz Ansari and Sami Basri. But they’ll ALSO both feature in a story by Dustin Nugyen which will also see return of long-time not seen friend of Damian, Colin Wilkes.

Greg Pak and Sumit Kumar are doing a team-up between Green Arrow Connor Hawke and Kenan Kong, Super-Man of China.

The graphic novels fans will be happy to see that Sara Kuhn (Shadow of the Batgirl) is writing Emiko Queen story and Minh Le, writer of Green Lantern: Legacy, is back with main character of that book, Green Lantern Tai Pham.

There is a story by a yet unannounced creative team starring Grace Choi, Anissa Pierce and Black Lighting. It’s called “Family Dinner” so I’m just gonna tak @thefingerfuckingfemalefury here....

Finally, Ryan Choi and Cheshire stories, but we’re told this is only some of what’s coming. I remember older solicits mentioned Lady SHiva, for example.

Picking your favorites every year is never easy, but after a significant amount of agony, I've narrowed my list down to just four. This isn't a definitive ranking but rather reflects the order in which I read these books. Are any of them make your favorites list this year?
