Launched by Williams Electronics in 1979, Gorgar stands out as the pioneering pinball machine to feature speech technology, marking a groundbreaking moment in the gaming industry. Crafted by Barry Oursler, this fantasy-themed table invites players into the ominous domain of its namesake demon, Gorgar, challenging them to defeat the malevolent entity through adept shots and strategic maneuvers.
This table enchants players with its innovative speech capabilities, enveloping soundscapes, and intricate artwork, offering an engrossing and immersive gameplay experience. The playfield, richly illustrated with scenes from Gorgar's infernal kingdom, is populated with targets and barriers that both amplify the game's thematic resonance and enrich its complexity.
While Gorgar is a very innovative table, it's acknowledged for its challenging nature. The gameplay, reflective of its 1970s roots, is geared towards short game durations where the primary challenge lies in prolonging playtime beyond mere minutes, due to the ease with which balls can be lost. This aspect underscores the era's pinball design ethos, which emphasized survival in the face of swift losses.
Nevertheless, this Williams's table foray into digital pinball simulations has broadened its appeal, meticulously preserving the essence of the original game, including the delicate balance of gameplay and the art of executing precise nudges to avert ball loss.
This digital reincarnation not only pays homage to a seminal moment in pinball evolution but also reacquaints both new enthusiasts and seasoned aficionados with the allure of arcade's golden age, encapsulating the spirit of a bygone era while reaching an expanded audience.

Image Description: A picture of Markus St. Vincent mid-fall from the sky over Gorgar, surrounded by the wooden shards of his wrecked ship. He wears a red captain's jacket over a hooded tunic, with a golden skull mask covering his face. In one hand he holds his sword, the other reaches up to a shard of wood above him. Above him is positioned the figurehead of his ship, a golden statue of a merman, extending one hand as if he is in song. The positioning of Markus and his figurehead appears to make the figurehead look to be giving the wooden shards to Markus as they both fall. End Description.
Hail her, oh hail her!
Our gallant captain cried
Blow high, blow low
And so sail we-
(my piece for the zine of ultimate evil which you can find here!)

most unhinged way to connect the world of elna and the world of spyre: the elves are the same, and efink was the elven oracle before eleminthindriel, who preceded adaine. think about it. fallinel is a parody of valinor and the undying lands, where elna is middle earth, and spyre is the evolution after the age of evil and the reign of leiland jr. technically we’ve only seen one continent of the world of spyre. elna could be on the other side. or the place could have just reorganized.
kei lumennura is kind of the thing this hinges on, since it kind of functions as a horny teen lothlorien. hallariel is celebrían if she married a pirate and then a tragically unlucky vice principal. there’s a ton of references to elven nonsense in fallinel. it just makes sense.
speaking of pirates, think about markus st. vincent and the sky kingdom of cael stuppe/kaelstoop. feels like a fun way to lead to a pirate city floating on the waters of the celestine.
ok wait i’m contextualizing this further: solace was a nation of halflings before it was settled by highcourt. need i remind anyone of ruckland? galfast hamhead’s energy tracks with the halflings of solace, which is a group that includes both the anarcho-socialist cubby family, and the luckstones, most notably penny. working class halflings are an established thread.
also deeply funny to imagine the gukgaks as descendants of the goblins of gorgar. with all the new arcanotech, who’s to say riz isn’t rigged to explode.
obviously eftbk and fantasy high are not happening at the same time. but really, we’ve been given info on <1000 years of spyre’s history. there’s time before that for the rise and fall and rise again of the evil kingdom of gorgar, that’s run by a set of evil coworkers. kalvaxus who. if you go by ages/eras, the reign of leiland jr over gorgar could mark the fourth age, which eventually culminated in the destruction of the goddess of sylvaire, and with the rise of the nightmare king began the fifth age, assuming we’re paralleling lotr.
also imagine arthur aguefort interacting with any of the vile villains. just any of them.

bloodkeep 🥰🥰 i do like to think about markus like. as a pirate "saving" those in the realm of the light who are seen as undesirable and bringing them back to sokhbarr <3 obvi he doesn't use the word save but is like "i kidnapped them from their homes" but they're never hurt. their "keepers" or parents may be tho <3
hey i love this so much. wrote a short fic because i love it so much actually

"You're coming with me now."
The man who stood in front of them was... terrifying, and Seven could feel their whole body shaking. He was tall, with lithe muscles, wild black hair, and a gold skull mask covering his face, and he was holding a curved sword that glinted in the moonlight and dripped with red.
Seven knew they couldn't do anything about this, even if they wanted to- they hadn't had anything to drink in two days, and anything to eat in longer than that, and they honestly were struggling just to stay standing in the corner of the barn they had been sleeping in for the past few months. "What do you want?" they asked, voice scratchy with disuse and thirst.
The man tilted his head, looking them up and down, and Seven tried to stand up as straight as they could. "I told you," he said, "I'm taking you with me."
"Oh," Seven said, and they weren't even surprised. "M... my parents finally hired someone to get rid of me?"
"No," the man said, and then he laughed, and Seven was expecting the sound to be harsh and frightening, but it was bright, almost musical. "No, your parents didn't hire me."
Seven suddenly remembered the red on the man's sword.
"They put you here, didn't they?"
Slowly, Seven nodded. "They said I'm cursed," they said, "because of something I did, maybe, or something I'm going to do? That's why I look the way I do, and why... why I'm not really their child, and why no one else is allowed to see me."
The man nodded, sharp and quick, like Seven was just confirming something he already knew. "Right. Come on, then." He gestured out the door of the barn with that wicked sword of his, and Seven knew that they would be going with him, one way or another.
Still, they hesitated. "Where are we going?"
The man's face was hidden behind that golden, shining mask, but somehow, Seven still knew that he was smiling. "Have you ever been to Gorgar?"

Sokhbarr was busy with the wargs, the less sentient kind, when one of his assistants came and told him that Markus was back from another expedition out of Gorgar. J'er'em'ih trotted after him gladly as he moved towards the door of the wildlife sanctuary, shelter, and medical wing they had constructed from the remnants of the beast pits.
Markus stood waiting with a... a figure at his side. Humanoid, mostly, but their limbs were just a little bit too long, their mouth stretched a little too wide, their teeth a little too sharp, their proportions just not quite human. They trailed behind Markus, looking around the sanctuary while clearly trying to appear like they weren't looking around the sanctuary.
"Sokhbarr!" Markus called, and the figure looked over, their eyes immediately going wide.
"Welcome back, Markus," Sokhbarr said, pulling Markus into a hug that made the other man laugh.
"Acting like it's been years since you've seen me," he said, clapping Sokhbarr on the shoulder and stepping back, and Sokhbarr could hear the grin in his voice. "Anyway, I want you to meet Seven. Stole them away from their home, one of those small villages in Elna. Their parents had shoved them into the barn, if you can believe it."
The figure- Seven?- kept sneaking glances at Sokhbarr, without quite looking at him.
"Seven, huh?" Sokhbarr asked. "Interesting name."
"Seventh born," the figure said, voice soft. "Never got a real name."
Sokhbarr raised an eyebrow. "Well, if you're going to be helping me in the sanctuary, you'll have to choose a name at some point. No rush, of course, but whenever you pick one."
Seven blinked, looking up at him for the first time. "Help you... what?"
"In the sanctuary," Sokhbarr said, gesturing around and behind him. "We take in all sorts of creatures, from Gorgar and from all of Elna, and we give them a place to live, and some help, if they need it. It's a big job, so sometimes Markus... finds people to help me."
"If you want to," Markus interrupted. "We can find other work for you here, if you'd prefer something else."
"Some of the animals back home were the only ones who didn't seem frightened of me," Seven said, looking around again. "There was a cow, one time, that was born not-quite-right, so they threw her into the barn with me, and I kept her safe." They paused, and then smiled, the first one Sokhbarr had seen from them. "I'd like to help."
Sokhbarr grinned at Markus, and then at Seven. "Well then," he said, "welcome to the bloodkeep."
