Do you think that when Rooster tries to eject and can't, before Hangman saves them, that he gets an answer to the question he's had for most of his life? He finally knows what his dad felt before he died, that fear, that hope dying as you realise you're stuck and can't do anything? Do you think he realises everything about why Mav pulled his papers, apart from his mum of course, that realised how traumatising it was for him to know his backseater, his best friend, died? Do you think it really set things in place for him understanding and forgiving Mav? Do you think he realised his mum was also the reason, when he thought about how his mum lost his dad so tragically?

(Not sure if this has been done yet, I apologize if I’m stealing)
Maverick: I just realized something, I had a bad childhood.
Goose (not looking up from his book): Yeah I know.
Iceman: What do you mean, you know?
Goose: Look at you!
Slider (looking at himself and the others up and down): What do you mean, look at us?
Goose: Look at how you stand. People who had good childhoods don’t stand like that.
Everyone: …
Maverick: Like sluts?
Goose: NO-

Tumblr media
You adjusted your dress carefully, checking your appearance in the mirror. The cups of your dress were tighter than normal, but the rest of the dress was flowy and hid your figure well enough. Someone would have to really be scrutinizing your abdomen to find a sign of your little bump among the patterned fabric.
Getting into a secret relationship with your brother’s best friend was definitely not the best idea that you ever had in your life. And neither was getting accidentally pregnant with his baby before you even told your brother Maverick that you were together in the first place.
But in your defense, if Maverick wanted keep you two apart, he should have stopped leaving you two alone together while he chased after whoever caught his eye. Goose and you spent a lot of time together over the years because of Maverick’s horndog tendencies and you weren’t going to apologize for that.
And, well, Goose was a good man. He was sweet to you. He bought you flowers for your birthday even before you ever dated. He always supported you and never spoke over you or made you feel like you weren’t important. He sent you love letters that made you swoon even though he knew that you couldn’t do the same for him for fear of Maverick finding them.
You loved him. And he loved you. And that was all that mattered.
You took a deep breath and tried to calm yourself down. It wouldn’t do you or anyone else any good if you showed up stressed. Maverick would get suspicious and hover around you and then you wouldn’t be able to tell Goose the news. And you needed to tell him. Soon. Before your bump was actually noticeable and everyone found out.
You just hit seventeen weeks and your bump was growing every day. You managed to hide it from everyone for now, but soon, it wasn’t going to be possible. So, you really needed to tell Goose. Tonight. Immediately. You were lucky enough that he got called home when he did, instead of in another seven months like originally planned.
So, you had to tell Goose about the little gosling. Tonight.
“What do you think, huh?” you asked, running a hand down your bump. “I’m just freaking out over nothing, aren’t I?” You rubbed your hand up and down your bump and sighed, placing your hands on your hips. “You know, one of these days, you’re going to have to kick for me.”
But not today, apparently.
Smiling softly, you grabbed your purse and keys and headed out to Goose’s car—his blue 1972 Ford Bronco. Goose called the car ‘his baby’ and left you specific instructions on how to take care of it while he was away. Ironically, Goose’s actual baby was more than likely conceived in the backseat.
Frantic goodbye sex minus a condom because Goose never restocked his stash plus your now very ironic ‘just pull out, we’ll be fine’ comment equaled one little gosling.
And you hadn’t told Goose. You were worried about his reaction—mostly about the high possibility that he would open the letter in front of Maverick, your brother, pass out from the new information, Maverick would read the letter, and it would all blow up from there. And, well, if Maverick was going to freak out, then Goose didn’t deserve to go through that alone.
Not if you could help it, anyway.
Pulling up to base, you showed the guard your ID and signed in before you were directed to the proper parking lot. Adjusting the straps of your dress, you made your way over to the airstrip. On your way over, however, you were surprised to see Cougar’s wife Eileen and her son.
“Eileen?” you called, causing her to turn around. “Cougar’s coming home too?”
“Yes, he is,” Eileen replied, adjusting her hold on her son. “I just got the message last night. Maverick and Goose are coming home as well?”
“Yeah, I got a message last night too,” you explained, trying to not stare at the baby boy.
You were the second-grade teacher at the on-base elementary school, so you had spent quite a lot of time around children. But there was just something about finding out that you were expecting one of your own that made your eyes latch onto any baby within a ten-meter radius of you.
“Where’s Kathy then?” you added, referring to Merlin’s wife.
“I called her last night and she said that she never got any message. Merlin isn’t coming home.”
“That’s strange,” you trailed off, trying to not assume the worst. You quickly forced your usual teacher smile when dealing with a concerned parent and gestured to Eileen’s son. “But at least Cougar finally gets to meet this little cutie.”
“I know,” Eileen sighed, hugging her son closer. “He was so upset that he missed his birth.”
“That’s the Navy, unfortunately,” you mumbled, grimacing to yourself.
The thought of giving birth alone crossed your mind more than you would have liked to admit already. Goose and Maverick could be redeployed at the drop of a hat and sent to the complete opposite side of the world, leaving you all by yourself. You tried to not dwell on that fact, though. There were a lot of other steps that had to be taken first before you even got there.
“Come on, I’m sure that they’re just about to land,” you urged, redirecting the conversation.
You made your way over to the airstrip to see the three aviators already walking over. Cougar started sprinting as soon as he spotted his wife and son. You smiled and squeezed Eileen’s shoulder reassuringly before breaking away to greet your own boys. Maverick reached your first, but Goose was impatiently right on his tail.
“Ah, there you are,” Maverick jokingly called to you. “You weren’t going to make us walk home?”
“Not this time,” you mused, letting your brother pull you into a hug. “I missed you, Pete.”
“Missed you too, Sis.”
You released your brother, who instead stared over at the exchange between Cougar and Eileen. You quickly turned to Goose and fought the significant urge to leap into his arms and kiss him breathless. Instead, you stepped over and got up on your tiptoes to give him a proper hug.
“Hey, Goosie,” you stated, burying your face in his chest.
“Hey, honey,” he returned, resting his head on top your own.
Goose quickly wrapped his arms around your and pressed a discreet kiss to the top of your head. One that you knew meant that he was excited to see you and that he was barely holding onto his sanity at the fact that he couldn’t kiss your like he wanted to right then and there.
But you both knew that you just had to wait a little longer before you could reunite properly.
“What happened with Cougar?” you asked, reluctantly breaking away from Goose.
“He turned in his wings,” Goose replied bluntly, causing your eyes to widen.
“He did what?”
“He got all freaked out on one of our patrols,” Maverick supplied, turning to you. “He thought that he was going to die and never meet his son.”
“Poor man,” you sighed, shaking your head. You turned back to Maverick and Goose and straightened up, studying their gazes. “But why are the two of you home then?”
“We’re going to TOP GUN,” Maverick stated proudly, high-fiving Goose before turning back to you. “And you should come with us.”
“Really? You want me to come with you guys?” you asked, trying to not reach out to Goose.
“Yeah, unless you’re doing summer school,” Maverick replied, shrugging his shoulders.
“No, I’m not,” you replied, shaking your head a bit. Sharing an intensely longing look with Goose, you eventually turned back to Maverick. “I mean, if you don’t mind me coming along, I could.”
“I think that you should,” Goose all but blurted out immediately. “Come along, I mean.”
“Well, then I guess I should get packing,” you agreed, unable to help your wide smile.
As Maverick turned to start walking over to greet Cougar and his wife, Goose reached for your hand and gave it a quick squeeze. You grabbed his hand in return, wanting to openly show the world that you loved Goose and that he loved you.
“Tonight,” Goose whispered in your ear, causing you to sneak a quick peck to his cheek.
“Tonight,” you agreed quietly.
And, like clockwork, Maverick’s horndog tendencies gave the two of you some space to talk.
Goose threw open the door to your bedroom and kicked it closed with his heel. Carrying you over to your bed, Goose gently laid you down before crawling on top. You cupped Goose’s cheeks with your hands and wrapped your legs around his waist. You rolled your hips up to grind against his own, which caused Goose to tighten his hold on you.
“Did you miss me, Goosie?” you asked, running your hands down his back.
“Every day, honey. Every. Goddamn. Day,” Goose groaned, rolling his hips in time with your own.
He sat up and quickly removed his Hawaiian shirt. You helped him pull off his white undershirt before pulling him back down to your lips once more. Goose rolled you two over and reached for your zipper without ever taking his lips off of your own.
But when you felt your dress start to loosen, you pulled back. Goose dropped his hands immediately and stared up at you with concern.
“What is it, honey? What’s wrong?” Goose asked softly.
You pressed your lips together and rested your hand against Goose’s chest, feeling his heartbeat underneath your fingers.
“Before we go any further, there’s something that I need to tell you.”
You climbed off of Goose and sat up on your bed. Goose straightened up and turned to you with a worried expression. He reached for your hand and brought it up to his lips, earning a small smile in return from you.
“What is it? You can tell me, honey.”
“Do you remember the night before you shipped out?” you started off with, staring down at your lap.
“Very well,” Goose assured you, pressing a kiss to your cheek. “Why?”
“Well . . .”
You trailed off, trying to figure out how to deliver the news. You released Goose’s hand and slowly stood up. Reaching back, you finished pulling down the zipper of your dress. Turning back to Goose, you put up a brave face and pulled the straps of your dress down. You let the fabric pool around your feet and stepped out of it.
Goose stared up at you, clearly confused, before he spotted the now visible bump. You slowly cupped your small bump, which became infinitely more noticeable when you curved your back a bit and turned to the side. Goose’s breath left his body. His eyes looked like they were about to pop out of his skull and his lips parted in shock.
“Well, um, I got a souvenir from that night,” you quipped nervously, waiting for Goose’s reaction.
He blinked rapidly, glancing between your face and your small bump. You pursed your lips together anxiously, trying to remain calm. You reminded yourself that you just dropped a bomb on Goose. This was definitely a surprise for him, so you just needed to be patient.
“You’re pregnant?” Goose breathed out, staring up at you with wide eyes.
“Yeah, Goosie.”
Goose nodded slowly, still processing the information before he slowly got up from his spot. You watched him closely, worried that he was going to get up and leave. But then he carefully pulled you to his chest and gently tilted your chin up so that he could rest his forehead against your own.
“You’re pregnant?” he repeated, his tone softer than before.
“I’m pregnant,” you confirmed, causing Goose to nod.
“And you’re okay with that?” he asked you softly, searching your eyes for concern.
“Yeah, I’m okay, Goosie.”
“And everything’s healthy? With both of you?”
“Clean bills of health.”
“I’m going to be a dad?” he asked, his voice picking up a lighter tone.
“Yes, Goosie,” you mused, rubbing your noses together. “You’re going to be a dad.”
“Holy shit,” Goose breathed out, causing you to chuckle. “I’m going to be a dad.”
He quickly pressed a set of kisses all over your face, which made you giggle due to the tickle of his mustache. You tried to return the kisses, but he was too fast for you. Pulling you into a deep kiss that stole your breath away, Goose slowly rested his hand on the swell of your bump. He spread his fingers, feeling the curve on his own properly for the first time.
“Holy shit, I’m going to be a dad!” Goose exclaimed, causing you to frantically shush him.
“Goose, the neighbors!”
“I’m going to be a dad!” Goose yelled out instead.
“Nick,” you laughed, trying to get him to quiet down. “You’ll alert the whole town yelling like that. Including Mav.”
“Right, sorry,” Goose whispered back. “Holy shit, I’m going to be a dad.”
Goose pulled you in for another soft kiss before dropping down to his knees to kiss your small bump. Nuzzling against your skin, Goose pressed a series of kisses that brought happy tears to your eyes. You ran a hand through his hair as Goose whispered to your little gosling.
“Hey, I’m your dad,” Goose informed your bump, causing you to smile. “I’m sorry that I was away for a bit, but I’m here now and I can’t wait to meet you in . . .”
“About five months,” you supplied for Goose.
“About five months,” he echoed back to your bump.
Goose pressed another kiss to your bump before standing up and gathering you in his arms again. But just as you started to return his loving kiss, Goose pulled back with a sudden realization.
“Wait right here.”
“What? Goose, what are you—”
You didn’t even get to finish your question before Goose bolted out of the room. Sighing to yourself, you shook your head. Running a hand down your bump, you managed a small smile when you heard Goose cursing at himself as he rummaged through his drawers.
“Your dad’s a bit of a nutcase,” you informed your baby, shaking your head. “But we like our nutcase.”
Goose nearly tripped as he ran back into your bedroom. You were about to ask him what the fuss was all about when he dramatically dropped onto one knee and held up a small box. And this time, it was your turn to comedically widen your eyes and drop your mouth open.
“Nick . . . are you serious?” you asked him softly, holding a hand to your chest.
“Of course, I’m serious,” Goose replied, popping open the case.
“How long have you had the ring?”
“About a year.”
“Nick, we’ve only been dating for a year,” you pointed out, like he was the crazy one.
“I know, honey,” Goose replied, causing your eyes to widen again.
“Holy shit.”
Goose laughed and held up the ring for you to see it. The ring was simple with a gold band and a circular diamond in the center. It wasn’t that large and Goose knew that some of the men who routinely flirted with you on base could probably afford a bigger and grander ring. But you didn’t seem to mind when you held your hands to your mouth, happy tears in your eyes.
“Will you marry me and make me the happiest guy in the whole world?” Goose asked, smiling softly.
“Of course, I’ll marry you, Goose,” you gushed, urging him to his feet.
You pulled him in for an emotional kiss and Goose managed to somehow slide the ring onto your finger despite the distraction. After you broke away from the kiss, you rested your head against his chest and admired your new ring.
“It’s perfect, Goosie.”
“You’re perfect, honey,” Goose returned, causing you to shoot him a playful glare.
“You’re a sap, Nick Bradshaw.”
“But I’m your sap, honey.”
“And don’t you forget it,” you warned him jokingly.
You pulled him down for another kiss, running your hands through his short hair. Goose trailed his hands up and down your sides, mapping out every inch of your subtle curve where your baby was growing. Your baby. A little human that you made together.
Holy shit you were going to be parents.
You shared soft kiss and caresses for a few moments, communicating all of the love that you shared for each other. But then you both remembered that you hadn’t seen each other in months and hell, you were both running high on adrenaline. Pulling away from the kiss, you rested your hands on Goose’s chest and tilted your chin up.
“Make love to me, Goosie,” you whispered against his lips.
“Yes, ma’am,” he replied, grinning as he pressed another kiss to your lips.
Goose gently lowering you back onto your bed. He stood up, shoved his pants down, and hurried back to you. Carefully hovering over you, mindful of your little bump, Goose trailed kissed down your face and down to your chest. Nuzzling the sensitive valley between your breasts and pressing a kiss to the top of both of them, Goose paused for a moment.
“I’ll be back for you two soon,” he stated, referring to your breasts.
“Goosie, stop personifying my breasts!”
“I don’t think they mind it, honey!”
Despite your playful scoff, Goose went back to task and trailed kisses down your stomach. Kissing over your small baby bump, Goose paused again and sat up a bit.
“Gosling, I’m going to need you to close your eyes and plug your ears for a bit. It’s nothing personal, but I just think that you’re a little young to—”
“—Goose!”
“What?” he laughed, causing you to shake your head at him and buck your hips. “Don’t worry, honey, I’m getting there. Be patient with me.” He grabbed the waistband of your underwear and shot you the smile that got you into this whole mess in the first place. “Now, you just sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment, sweetheart.”
After becoming very well acquainted with each other again, you snuggled up together on your bed.
“When did you want to get married?” Goose asked you softly, wrapping an arm around your bump.
“Well, we should tell Pete about what’s going on before we sign the papers,” you mumbled, rubbing a pattern into Goose’s chest. You sighed, snuggling further into Goose’s side. “I just hope that he doesn’t freak out about it.”
“You’ll be fine,” Goose replied, pressing a kiss to your forehead. “Me, on the other hand, he might strangle with his bare hands.”
“No, he won’t,” you told Goose. “He loves you like a brother. He’d never hurt you like that.”
“But he’s your actual brother,” Goose pointed out. “And he’s hated all of your boyfriends.”
“None of them hold a candle to you, Goosie,” you told him honestly.
“I know that you’re just telling me that to make me feel better, but it’s actually working,” Goose stated, causing you to laugh softly.
“I’m serious,” you assured him, pressing a kiss to his chest. “I love you, Goosie. Like I’ve never loved another man before. He’ll see that.”
“I love you too,” Goose returned softly, rubbing his fingers over your bump. “You and our little gosling . . . there’s nothing else that I care more about in the whole world.”
You hummed contentedly and snuggled further into Goose’s touch. Goose leaned down and pulled the thin blanket over your bodies as you slowly started to drift off to sleep. He pressed a kiss to your forehead, your nose, and then finally your lips.
“Goodnight, honey.”
“Goodnight, Goosie.”
Your breathing evened out and you quickly fell asleep against Goose’s chest like you always did after your reunions. Goose kept a careful hold on you, making sure that you stayed warm and secure. Rubbing your back and your bump, Goose couldn’t help but let his mind wander as the afterglow of your reunion faded and reality started to set back in.
You were pregnant with his baby. And that changed everything.
Hell, you needed to get married. Quickly. And before you got married, you really should tell Maverick about the whole situation. And then deal with the fallout of that because even if Goose and Maverick were like brothers, Maverick was still an overprotective older brother when it came to you.
And Goose wasn’t just dating you. He knocked you up. And he was marrying you.
Maverick was going to put his head on a pike when he found out.
And, then, of course, there was the whole issue of money and a house and everything else that went into having a baby. The benefits would be good and he wouldn’t have to worry about healthcare for you, but hell, he needed to buy a house. Not just a cheap rundown one, like the one that you all shared now. But a real one.
With a fenced in backyard so that the gosling could run around. And with an actual driveway so that the gosling could learn how to ride his or her bike without worrying about someone hitting them with a car. And without a rickety staircase out front that would definitely give them a splinter. One that didn’t have too many projects in case he got sent out soon after the baby was born.
Hell, would he even get to be there when the baby was born? Cougar didn’t.
Goose paused in his worrying when he felt pressure against his hand. Confused, he looked over at you to see you still asleep. Pulling back the covers a bit, Goose sucked in a breath when he realized that the pressure against his hand was coming from your bump. From your little gosling.
The baby was kicking. Your baby was kicking.
Goose pressed against the kick gently, just to tell the gosling that he was there and grinned when the pressure returned. Resting his head on top of your own, Goose pressed a kiss to your forehead as he cupped your small bump again.
He knew that he had to figure things out. He had a lot of things to figure out. But for right now, he just wanted to hold you and your baby.
And so, he did.

Saunter (Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw x fem!Reader)
wc: 3.5k No warnings! Enjoy and please let me know what you think!! Summary: As Viper's secretary, you encounter a new set of hotshot pilots every 6 weeks, but a certain WSO catches your eye, and you can't help but fall for him...and his mustache.
Tumblr media
---
“You boys are grounded! Until further notice, neither of your asses are gonna be up in the air under any circumstance,” Viper’s voice cut through the office, sending a chill down your spine.
You had been a secretary at North Island’s ‘Fighter Weapons School’ for some time now, hopping from admiral to commander when duty saw fit. Usually, you found yourself sitting at some small, beige, creaky, metal desk a couple feet in front of one of the higher-ups’ offices, your sole purpose fetching coffee and checking in the arrogant pilots who got called in to get their asses whooped.
Two weeks ago however, when you got assigned to the beige desk outside of Viper’s office, you realized just how much business these Top Gun men meant. Every other day it seemed the same two sweaty idiots were wandering past your desk, muttering their callsigns with their heads low, and returning after a screaming fit from Viper, heads held even lower. You had never said a word to them, never really even lifted your head to notice them, just shrugged them off as another pair of cocky assholes who flew too close to the sun.
“Maverick, this is your last warning!” Viper yelled
“Yeesh,” you muttered under your breath, the tip of your pencil swirling over the name ‘Maverick’ scribbled into your ledger.
“And Goose,” Viper said quieter, almost disappointedly, “You’re a good backseater, you’re a gifted flyer, you gotta stop letting an idiot like Maverick play with your life like that,” he finished with an almost fatherly tone.
“Final warning boys,” Viper sighed, “do I make myself clear?”
“Yes sir,” their voices intersected each other, morale completely defeated.
You found yourself tracing the two o’s in Goose’s name when the also creaky door to Viper’s office opened, startling you enough to look over to the two men coming out, heads low. The one in front was shorter, strong build, jet black hair, and the other was tall, lanky, blonde, and had a mustache…and boy were you a sucker for a good mustache.
“That sounded brutal,” you said quietly, your eyes darting to the taller one’s briefly, catching his gaze and sending a blush through your cheeks.
“Brutal doesn’t even begin to describe it,” the shorter one said, his palms darting up to cover his eyes, “ugh Goose what the hell are we gonna do?”
So that was his name. He was Goose, Viper’s so called ‘gifted flier.’
“What are we gonna do?” Goose questioned, revealing his sweet lilted voice, “Mav I love you buddy but only one of us is flying the plane…what we do up there is kinda on you.” He sounded defeated, like he felt bad for having to reality check his best friend after such a serious conversation with Viper.
“Yeah, yeah,” Maverick shrugged him off, walking instead over to the front of your desk, “hey you’re here all the time right?”
Was he asking you? You looked up from your ledger to meet his hooded blue eyes.
“Me?” You asked, surprised, eliciting a chuckle from Goose
“Yeah, you.” Maverick responded, “you’re outside of Viper’s office all the time…does he get this pissed at all his pilots?”
“Well,” you looked down at your ledger to read his name, “Maverick,” you turned to Goose, “and Goose,” he smiled at you saying his name, “I’ve been here for all of two weeks, but I can say with absolute certainty that neither has anyone come in as frequently as you two, nor has anyone gotten Viper as riled up…”
Maverick hung his head as Goose walked over to him, patting him on the back.
“Motherfucker!” Maverick yelled, slamming his fist down on your desk, making it rattle and sending your pencil from your hand.
Goose bent down to pick up your pencil, standing to place it delicately in your hand and greet you with his tender gaze and warm smile, his teeth barely peeking through his mustache.
“You’ll have to excuse my dear friend Maverick here,” he said sarcastically, placing his hands on his friend’s shoulders to guide him up from your desk, “he’s had a bit of a rough day and unfortunately likes to handle that by making rash decisions that put everyone’s lives in danger,” Goose pat him on the back with a chuckle
“That’s about what I’ve gathered from all your little conversations in there,” you said as you gestured to Viper’s office.
“You’ve heard all those, have you?”
“Oh yeah,” you chuckled, “probably a little more than I’d like to, Goose”
He blushed as you said his name again, a smile peeking through his mustache once more.
“Well, I better be getting this flyboy home so he can forget today ever happened,” he said as he slapped Maverick’s chest, making him groan in annoyance, “ain’t that right honey?”
“As much as I love your company, I’m hoping I don’t see either of you again, for the sake of your careers,” you said, making Goose chuckle and Maverick groan again.
“My name’s y/n by the way,” you said quickly as they started to shuffle away, but they didn’t seem to hear you.
“What was that?” Goose asked, turning around and leaning back so he could face you
“Oh,” you blushed, mostly out of embarrassment, “I said my name is y/n”
“Y/n” Goose repeated, your name rolling off his tongue sending chills down your spine, “I like it…I think I’ll remember it”
You laughed, shooting them a small salute as Goose turned around and walked with his best friend to the parking lot, leaving you alone to question how you couldn’t stop thinking about a certain naval aviator.
“Y/n!” Viper’s yell cut you out of your daydream, spinning you around in your chair to face him
“Yes sir?”
“Fix this damn door when you’re done fawning over my flyers, it's too damn creaky!
“Oh god,” you blushed, making Viper chuckle, “yes sir”
“Listen Y/n,” his tone changed, returning to the normal calm voice you were used to when he talked to you, “I’m fine with it…as long as it's not Maverick”
“It's definitely not Maverick sir”
“So it's Goose then?”
“Why are you asking me about this, sir?” you couldn’t help but question him. You had been working with Viper for weeks now and although he had always been friendly towards you, and you had shared a few conversations in between meetings here and there, he had never asked you anything personal.
“Because I’ve been standing here since you botched telling Goose your name…and it’s hard not to notice.”
“Oh god have you actually?”
“You were so flustered you didn’t even hear the door creak…” he clicked his tongue, “I guess I’ll have to find more reasons to bring Bradshaw in here then…” he taunted as he turned around and walked back into his office, closing the very creaky door behind him.
“You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your liiips,” a warped voice sang from within the bar next to base.
You had talked yourself into going out and trying to make some friends, and the best place for that just so happened to be the bar a mere 2 blocks from your work. It had been months since you moved here and you still knew virtually nobody outside of Viper who you guessed counted as a friend now? You had let your hair down after work, and had swapped your suit jacket and skirt out for high waisted jeans and a light sweater. Nothing fancy, but also nothing that screamed military, just something that would help you blend in a bit.
The awful voice continued to sing, now joined by what sounded like twenty other equally awful voices, “You’ve lost that lovin feelin!”
“Oh god,” you thought to yourself, wondering how you planned on accomplishing anything in there.
Once you were inside you saw a crowd of navy men in their dress whites dissipating from the bar, some laughing, some continuing to sing the remainder of the song. At the epicenter of it all was none other than Maverick. Of course. Sitting next to him was a rather flushed blonde woman wearing a very similar outfit to you, and Maverick was obviously trying to work his charm.
Your gaze traveled from Maverick to other parts of the room, glancing at couples sitting in booths along the walls, aviators trying to chat up women at tables scattered around, and lone men in white nursing their beers throughout the bar. Eventually your eyes settled on one blonde, mustached man in particular, Goose. He was sat at the opposite end of the bar as Maverick, beer in hand, eyes wandering the label of the bottle.
This was your chance.
You sauntered over, hands deep in the pockets of your jeans fiddling with the fabric. Goose didn’t even look up when you approached him, too lost in the contents of his beer to even notice your presence, you just stood there amused, watching him lost in thought.
“Evenin’ sailor,” you said softly, a blush creeping along your cheeks as Goose’s eyes drifted up the barrel of the bottle, up your frame, and eventually to your eyes.
“Well I’ll be damned!” He beamed, scooting over and patting the bar stool beside him, “if it isn’t miss secretary herself.”
“You keep calling me that and I’m gonna think you forgot my name, Chicken,” you teased as you purposefully messed up his callsign, eliciting a sweet melodic laugh from his lips.
“How could I ever forget a name as beautiful as y/n,” he said as he tilted his head down, his eyes looking up at yours through his lashes.
“Well well, the Goose has a good memory,” you smiled, flagging down the bartender to order a beer for yourself
“I’ll have whatever he’s having,” you said, resting your elbows on the bartop
“Put it on my tab,” Goose interjected, shooting a quick wink your way
“If I didn’t know any better I’d say you were trying to flirt with me sir,” you shot him a suspicious look
“Well who says I’m not?” Goose asked, shooting the same look your way
“I just find it hard to flirt with a man who’s only identification is the name of a bird” you said sarcastically, accepting your beer from the bartender and taking a sip
“Lieutenant Nicholas Brashaw, callsign Goose,” he drawled out, holding his hand out for you to shake
“Y/n L/n, secretary” you said with the same tone, placing your hand in his
Goose brought your hand up to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss to the top of it, his mustache hairs tickling your skin and giving you a chill.
“So, Nick, I gotta ask you,” you began as soon as Goose let your hand go
“Shoot,” he prompted you, taking a sip of his beer
“Why on earth do you all let Maverick sing if he’s so damn bad at it?”
Goose threw his head back in a laugh, “It's a bet.”
“A bet?”
“Twenty bucks…he’s gotta have carnal knowledge of a lady on the premises…and that is our top selling approach”
“Top selling huh? So you’ve done this before?”
“Once for Mav, he crashed and burned…never for me though”
“And why not? The bet doesn’t extend both ways?”
“Well I guess it's cause you weren’t here to catch my eye,” he smiled a confident smile at you, “had I seen you sitting across the bar all by yourself, well it wouldn’t have been Mav up there singing today”
“Oh you would have done that for me?” You chuckled
“Honey I’ll sing you whatever song you want whenever you want it”
“You’re one smooth man Goose,” you smiled at him, he smiled back, making you both blush.
Just as Goose was about to speak, the blonde woman from earlier walked by, fixing her lipstick with her finger
“Your friend was magnificent by the way,” she chimed as she walked by, causing your and Goose’s mouths to drop. Maverick followed close behind, a spring in his step.
“Nah,” Goose said, his eyes on the woman, “nah!” he said even louder as his eyes found his best friend.
“I can’t believe that actually worked,” you said stunned, turning to face Maverick as he approached you and Goose.
“What can I say,” Maverick shrugged, a cocky smile plastered on his face.
“There’s no way,” Goose said, mouth agape, “there’s really no way Mav”
“Where there’s a will, Goosey, there’s a way,” Maverick said, slapping Goose on the shoulder, “I see you’ve found our secretary from earlier”
You tilted your beer up to cheer Mav, who was now sitting on Goose’s other side.
“You know Goose here hasn’t shut up about you-”
“No no no no,” Goose turned to face him, placing a hand over Maverick’s mouth, “we don’t need to talk about that Mav, we don’t need to bring that up I don’t think”
“Oh yes we do Goose,” he muttered through Goose’s hand.
“No, Goose, let him talk,” you bit your lip as you smiled at Maverick, “I want to hear what he has to say about you”
“The woman wants to hear,” Maverick muttered
“Mav, it's not happening. I’ll stay here all night if I have to”
“Goose!” You whined, “I want to know!”
Maverick pried Goose’s hand from his mouth for enough time to blurt out, “hasn’t shut up about you since we left base today! Said he thinks you’re gorgeous!”
“I’m gonna kill him,” Goose said, getting up and facing his best friend, “that’s it, Mav, you’re a dead man”
“Awww,” you chuckled as Goose grabbed Maverick by his collar and threw him off his stool, sending Maverick into a laughing fit nearby,
“Pretend you didn’t hear any of that,” Goose said as he sat back down
“That’s not happening” you said as you shook your head
“And why not?”
“Cause I’ve been thinking the same thing,” you blushed. Maverick returned in time to slap his friend on the back in congratulations.
“Yeehaw!” Goose exclaimed, his cheeks burning red and his smile beaming towards you. You couldn’t help but smile back at him.
Now you were sat at your desk, pencil in your hand, waiting to check in whoever Viper was gonna sink his teeth into next. Your mind however was replaying the events of several nights ago, when you and Maverick and Goose became a sort of inseparable trio at the bar: Goose’s sweet flirtations filling your ears every chance he got, and his arm swung around the back of your seat in Maverick’s car as they drove you to your house, and Goose’s gentle kiss on your hand as he said goodnight to you.
“Goodmorning ma’am,” a voice cut you out of your daze. Your eyes traced up the slender frame to Goose, a goofy smile plastered on his face.
“Morning lieutenant,” you spoke softly, “am I meant to check you in? You and Maverick get up to trouble again?”
Goose laughed, “no, no, Mav left his ego at home today and we landed early, so I wanted to stop by and say hi”
“Well hi,” you blinked up at him
“Hi” he said back confidently, “listen I was hoping you’d want to uh-”
“Bradshaw!” Viper’s voice rang from the other side of the door.
“Oh god,” you laughed, eyes darting down to your ledger
“I'm in for it now honey,” Goose said as he stood up straight and prepared for Viper’s reprimanding
“Lieutenant,” he began, the squeaking of the door muffling his words, “you're not distracting my secretary are you?”
“I hope not sir”
“I don't know if I believe you Bradshaw. Whether or not distraction was your intention, she looks pretty distracted to me,” Viper smiled down at you
“Sir,” you shook your head as you plopped your face into your hands to conceal your blush
“She was working perfectly before you arrived Lieutenant, and now she can't even lift her head high enough to read what's on the page in front of her!” Viper yelled sarcastically, gesturing to you, “you better right your wrongs or I'll have you and that hotshot pilot of yours grounded for another week!”
Viper spun around, shooting you a wink as you raised your head from your hands, and closed the door to his office, satisfied with his work.
“Well…” you began
“Commander's orders miss L/n…what could I possibly do to rectify the situation,” Goose jokingly pondered
“Hmmm let's think,” you said, twirling your pen
“How's about I take you out…” Goose blushed, his mustache curling up into a smile, “on a date.”
“A date?” You teased
“Yeah. Just you and me. No idiot Maverick to tease us the whole time,” he smiled
“Yeah Bradshaw, I’d like that”
“You free tonight honey?” He drawled
“Pick me up at six Lieutenant, not a minute later,” you shook your pencil at him
With a salute and a “yes ma'am,” Goose was walking down the hallway head held high.
5:59 the clock blinked as you sat in front of it, makeup and hair done, a light blue slip dress gently hugging your frame. This had felt like the longest minute of your life, sitting in front of your digital clock just waiting for the minute to change and Goose to arrive.
6:00 blinked and your heart started racing uncontrollably. The noise of it thumping was so loud it just about drowned out the knocking at your door. Breathing sharply to calm down, you stood up and smoothed out your dress, heading slowly towards the front door.
Opening it, your eyes scanned up Goose’s frame, taking in his pressed khaki pants, his white button down tucked into it, sleeves rolled up and top buttons undone, and his mustache curled up into a smile.
“My goodness,” he hollered, “don’t you look mighty fine darlin”
“Back at ya flyboy,” you blushed
“You ready for the best date of your life?” Goose asked, his soft eyes gazing down into yours.
“I’ve been thinking about it all day, Viper hasn’t heard the end of it,” you said as you locked your door and followed Goose to his bronco.
“Is that right, sugar?” He asked as he helped you into the passenger seat, goofy smile curling his mustache
“Oh yeah Lieutenant”
“Even the part about Viper?” He asked as he walked around to the driver’s seat and hopped in
“Especially the part about Viper. You better be on your best behavior or he’ll be hot on your tail,” you joked
“Ah-ha,” Goose hollered.
Goose drove you two down the sunset-lit road, gentle rock music playing from his stereo, his aviators resting gently on the bridge of his nose as his hand grasped the headrest of your seat.
Your date with Goose was full of laughter, good food, many drinks, and even more flirting. He told you the story of how he joined the Navy, and how he met Maverick in training and they became attached at the hip, and even how he was nervous about Maverick’s flying sometimes but he trusted him with his life. He asked you all about yourself, and as you told him about your upbringing and your career and your family, he sat with his head in his hands staring at you with bright eyes and curiosity. You loved listening to him talk about himself, and from the looks of him it seemed he felt the same about you.
After offering to pay multiple times, Goose finally wore you down as he set cash, plus a generous tip, down on the table.
“Thanks Goose,” you said genuinely, grabbing his hand in your own and looking him deep in the eyes.
“Anything for you, sugar,” he returned your gaze with a smile, his mustache curling over his lip, “ready to hit the road?”
“Yeah,” you smiled, keeping your hand in his as you stood up from your booth and walked towards the door, “where to next?”
“If it's not too forward,” he began, leaning down to speak softly into your ear once you exited the restaurant, “and tell me if it is…but I was hoping you’d want to come back to my place for a little?”
“And what exactly is there to do at your place?” You feigned confusion.
Goose simply shrugged, a smirk threatening his lips, as he walked to the passenger side of his car and opened the door for you.
“Never leave room for the imagination, Bradshaw,” you muttered, getting in the car and watching Goose saunter around to the driver’s side.
With a smile on his face, Goose’s hand traveled across the center console until it found yours, his fingers gently lacing with yours as his thumb rubbed gentle circles while you drove the short distance back to Goose’s house.

mav, loudly clearing his throat and shaking out a VERY long sheet of paper: my dearest goose
goose, glancing up: yes?
mav, assuming a strong stance like he’s about to serenade him: my dearest nicky, words cannot express my adoration for you, nor my dedication to your side. nay, but I shall attempt anyways. your hair is silky like a really nice pillow, your eyes as deep as a river. your nose was drawn by the gods, and your mouth was painted with a rose.
goose, turning to mav’s literal boyfriend, eyes wide: you aren’t going to stop him???
ice, mav’s aforementioned literal boyfriend, turning the page in his book: if I stop him now, he’ll just start over
mav, getting louder: YOUR HANDS-

talk to me, lucky (part 2)
summary: You're Maverick’s kid. You’re also Bradley Bradshaw’s best friend—or at least, you were. What lies between you two now is uncharted territory.
pairing: bradley "rooster" bradshaw/mitchell!reader
wc: 2.3k
a/n: sooooo likeeee i was genuinely expecting like three (3) people to read this. I'm so glad you guys like it, that means the world to me, so I'll continue this little series as long as folks want me to!
This part was purely self indulgent with the goal to make a Pete Maverick Mitchell so dad shaped that it might fix my own daddy issues. (didn't work but a girl can dream.)
Also!! I am purposefully trying not to comment on physical appearance! The reader is female, but her mother is intended to remain ambiguous. There is a lack of accessible fics on this website and want I POC to be able to enjoy this as well!

The Hard Deck fell silent as soon as my hand made contact with his cheek. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. All eyes were on us, but the only ones that mattered to me were Bradley’s.
They were as brown and as big as I remember, and he raised his hand to cup his cheek, brows knitted together in confusion as he stared at me. That only served to make me angrier, and I forced myself to take a step back before I hit him again and got myself into actual trouble. He was at a loss for words, and I was afraid if I said anything I’d reveal more of myself to the pilots to our left than I’d like. Without so much as a murmur of an insult, I turned, collected my phone and keys from the table, and made a beeline for the front door. As I was walking away, I heard Lieutenant Seresin laugh, making some quip to Bradley along the lines of what the hell was that about, Bradshaw?
My eyes found Penny’s, who knew and understood and looked at me with sympathy before patting my dad’s arm in goodbye as he slid off his stool. That made me feel rotten. He’d been so excited to reconnect with Penny, and here I was making a scene and ruining his evening. I bet he was thanking God the last name on my flight suit was my mother’s instead of his.
The air outside had cooled since the sun set, and I managed to speed walk down the block to where I parked my car before a hand caught my arm. I didn’t dare turn around, tears hot in my eyes, my heart still in my chest as I held my breath and waited. Much to my relief, the voice that spoke belonged to my father.
“Why don’t you ride home with me? You’re too upset to drive.” He said softly, and I shook my head, feeling more and more like I was nine years old as the seconds passed.
“I’ll walk.” I snipped, chest tightening with guilt at my tone. I was mad at him too, as much as I hated it. I blamed him for Bradley leaving, all those years ago, but I forgave him after a week. My father was all I had left, and I wasn’t prepared to lose him over an action he felt morally obligated to take. And Uncle Ice might have had something to do with me forgiving him so quickly.
Dad sighed from behind me. “You can’t walk all the way back to the house.”
“Who says I’m going back there?” My voice quivered, and even as he gently tugged on my arm I refused to turn around, arms crossed over my chest. The thought of going back to our base issued housing, that completely staged two bedroom home void of memories or light or emotion or Mom was already suffocating. Dad was quiet for a spell, probably thinking, before he inhaled sharply and spoke up.
“Alright, how about we go to the gas station for some slurpees and drink them at the beach?” His tone was light, and I didn’t have to be looking at him to know he had one eyebrow raised with that little smirk on his face. I perked up a little, and he tossed his arms around my shoulders from behind. “How bout it, Birdie? Or are you too grown to hang out with your old man?” He shook me a little, and I rolled my eyes with a small huff, turning in his arms. He had me with my nickname and he knew it, so I mustered the best pout I could.
“Can I get a large?” I asked, and Dad smoothed down my hair gently with a nod.
“Of course.” He stepped back and held out his hand, waggling his fingers and his brows at the same time. I laughed and rolled my eyes, taking his hand, and together we walked to where he’d found a spot to squeeze his bike. Like all the times I’d had before, I waited until Dad had slung his leg over the bike and walked it backwards before I slid on behind him. My arms wound around his middle and I unceremoniously shoved my face into his back, and I could feel him laugh as he eased the bike into a cruise. One hand came from the handlebar and clasped over mine, and I smiled faintly into the leather of his jacket as we picked up speed down the road.
I was one of the luckiest girls alive to have Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as a father. His military career alone opened more doors for my future than would’ve ever been possible without the Navy. Beyond that, he was—in my humble opinion—the best dad ever. Growing up, my father always put me first. He never accepted a promotion that would take him away from me more than he had to be, and after mom died he accepted a position that essentially grounded him so he could stay stateside, sacrificing his love for flying in order to raise his child.
In those years he never missed a ballet recital or softball game or debate competition, and he always made sure I went on whatever field trips my school was carting us off to. He made sure I had nice clothes and nice shoes and a reliable car and always, always made sure I knew how much he loved me.
Pete Mitchell thought I hung the moon from the second the nurse put me in his arms, and it has been that way ever since. He acted like a loving father should and then some, because that love always translated over to Bradley, too.
It was the same with me. Ever since I learned how to talk, some adult would smile at me and ask me what my daddy did for a living, and I’d smile with all my teeth (some of them missing on occasion) and say “My daddy is a hero!”, and I meant it every single time.  I still do.
Dad and I ended up on a slice of beach far from the prying eyes inside The Hard Deck. I abandoned my socks and boots and rolled my jeans up before plunging my painted toes—the only femininity females were allotted in the Navy—into the cooled sand. I balanced my cherry Slurpee between my knees, eyes on the moon as it reflected off the water’s surface. Dad and I sat there in comfortable silence for a long while, just listening to the waves crash in.
“Are you mad at me? For slapping Bradley?” I asked finally, my voice quiet, lips wrapped around my straw. To my right, relaxed in the sand, my father shook his head.
“Not angry, just confused.” He pushed around the blue raspberry slush in his cup with his straw, eyes on the horizon, like always. “I’m trying to understand why you hit him. That’s not like you, and Bradley’s the last person I’d expect you to be violent with. When I saw your pictures next to one another in the debrief, I thought you’d be excited to see him again.”
Guilt hit me like the waves I was staring at. “I was, when I found out B and I both got pulled for this deployment. I was even more excited when I found out you were coming too, but that wore off pretty quickly when I remembered Bradley hasn’t spoken to either of us in years.” I set my cup down and leaned forward, hugging my arms around my thighs and watching my toes wiggle free of the sand before burying them again. “He abandoned us. We’re his family and he left, over something trivial.”
“Have you put yourself in his shoes?” Dad asked, and upon receiving my twisted up nose and furrowed brows in response, he took another sip of his drink before setting it aside and lying back in the sand. He opened up one arm and beckoned me forward, and suddenly I was six years old again after a nightmare as I lay down and rested my head on his stomach. His hand slowly began to work through my hair, his other arm propped beneath his head. “The only memories Bradley has of his old man are ones he learned from everyone else. He knew his dad was a pilot, he knew he was a hero, and as soon as he got old enough, he decided he wanted to follow in his footsteps. That remind you of anyone?”
I closed my eyes with a soft sigh, shrugging my shoulders. “No.” I muttered, folding my arms, and my head bounced with my dad’s little laugh.
“Well,” he drawled, twirling some of my hair around his finger, “it reminds me of Little Mav.” I grinned with my eyes still closed, turning my head away so he wouldn’t see. Little Mav was the nickname I had earned from my father’s fellow service men and women. I was his shadow whenever I could be, accompanying him to work with wide eyed wonder, amazed at all the things he could do. Uncle Ice had originated the nickname when he first met me at the ripe age of three, claiming I was twice the ball of energy that my father was and ten times cuter. I had him wrapped around my finger, too, which came in handy years later when my father tried to prevent me from enlisting. He never tried to pull my papers like he did with Bradley, but he did try and talk me out of it more times than I can count. Eventually he accepted the fact that I was determined to be a pilot, just like him, but was afraid my last name would set me back due to his reputation. While he was highly decorated and well respected within the Navy, the last name Mitchell tended to stiffen the spines and lock the jaws of quite a few admirals. So, thanks to our dearest Admiral Kazansky, I was able to enlist under my mother’s last name. I was grateful for it—the last thing I wanted was to be judged based on who my father was. Or worse yet, to be handed things because my old man was Maverick.
“That still doesn’t excuse what he did.”
“Would you have stuck around if I pulled your papers and set your career back as long as I did Bradley’s? Because believe me, I wanted to.” He wasn’t kidding and I knew it because yes, he never tried to have my enlistment papers pulled, but they had caused more than a few arguments before my father (with the help of his wingman) came to terms that I was a grown adult who made my own choices. It scared the hell out of him, having me up in the air, but he wasn’t going to stand in my way and risk losing me. He’d already learned his lesson with Bradley. I lay there quietly for a long moment, feeling my throat tighten up and my eyes sting with the threat of tears.
“He left us.” I murmured, choking out the last word and it was painful. “I…” Two words followed that, ones that I couldn’t force my mouth or my brain to conjure into reality.
“I know.” My father whispered, smoothing his hand over the top of my head with a heavy sigh, and I was so grateful I didn’t have to say it out loud. “That’s why you have to forgive him.”
“I don’t know how.” I whispered, sitting up when my father did and looking back at him. His hand cupped my cheek, his thumb swiping away a tear that had escaped, before he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to the top of my head.
“You’ll figure it out, kiddo.” With a grunt he stood, holding a hand down and using it to pull me to my feet. I stooped down and scooped up my shoes and my Slurpee, before an arm was slung around my shoulders and we headed back up the beach. “In the meantime, I’m gonna take you to your car and pay my tab at Penny’s. Don’t wanna get in any more trouble with her than I already am.”
To that I smiled wide up at him. “Ooooh, you have a crush on Penny Benjamin.” I sang teasingly. “Try not to mess it up this time, Pops.” Dad grinned down at me, a look of mock offense on his face as he placed his free hand on his chest.
“Sometimes I think you’re Goose reincarnated.” He mused, and my smile softened. I rested my head on his shoulder, switching my things to one hand so I could wrap an arm around his middle.
“You think he would’ve liked me? Uncle Goose?” I asked quietly, and my dad sighed with a nod, one of those bittersweet smiles on his face.
“Oh, I happen to know for a fact that he loved you.” He squeezed my shoulder and I nodded.
“I’ll have to apologize to him for slapping his son.”
“If Goose is out there somewhere, I’m confident he’d agree that Bradley deserved it.”
I hummed with a slow nod, exhausted. Tomorrow was our first day at TOPGUN, and it was bound to be a big one as I faced the consequences of my action. “I hope Goose is with us. I’ll need him tomorrow.”
“He’ll be there, Birdie.” Dad assured me quietly, and if either of us had been looking up at the night sky, we would’ve seen the shooting star that passed over our heads at my father’s promise.
