As I cannot write I put this down simply and freely as I might speak to a person to whose intimacy and tenderness I can fully intrust myself and who I know will bear with all my weaknesses

I was born at Ashburnham in the county of Sussex in the year 1813 of poor but pious parents my fathers occupation was a labourer for the Rt Hon the Earl of A my mother kept the Rt Hon the Countefs of A Charity School and by their ample conduct and great industry were enabeled to render a comfortable living for their family which were eleven in number William Samuel Mary Edmond Jesse Elizabeth Hannah Jane George Louisa Lois endeavouring to bring us up in the fear and admonition of the lord as far as lay in their power always giving us good advice and wishing us to do unto others as we would they should do unto us thus our parents pointed out the way in which we were to incounter with this world wishing us at all times to put our trust in god to Walk in the paths of virtue to bear up under all the trials of this life even till time with us should end.

But at the early age of thirteen I left my parents to go and live with Mr and Mrs P to nurse the children which had I taken my Fathers and Mothers advice I might have remained in peace until this day but like many others not knowing when I was well of in fourteen months I left them for which my friends greatly blamed me then I went to Fairlight housemaid to Lieut G but there cruel usage soon made me curse my Disobedience to my parents wishing I had taken there advice and never left the Worthy Family of P but then alas to late they treated me with cruelty too horrible to mention for trying to avoid the wicked design of my master I was thrown down stairs but I very soon left them and came to my friends but being young and foolish I never told my friends what had happened to me they thinking I had a good place and good usage because I never told them to the contrary they blamed my temper.

Then I went to live with Col P Catsfield kitchenmaid where I was well of but there my memory failed me and my reason was taken from me but the worthy Lady my Mistress took great care of me and placed me in the care of my parents and sent for Dr W who soon brought me to know that I was wrong for Coming to me one day and finding me persisting against my Mother for I had forsaken her advice to follow the works of darkness For I acknowledge being guilty of that great sin of selfdestruction which I certainly should have done had it not been for the words of that worthy Gentleman Dr W. he came to me in the year 1829 he said unto me Elizabeth I understand you are guilty of saying you shall destroy yourself but never do that for Remember Elizabeth if you do when you come before that great God who is so good to you he will say unto you Thou hast taken that life that I gave to you Depart from me ye cursed but let me never hear those words pronounced by the O Lord for surely I never felt such impressions of awe striking cold upon my breast as I felt when Dr W said so to me. But oh with what horror would those words pierce my heart to hear them pronounced by an offended God

But my views of things have been for some time very different from what they were when I first came home I have seen and felt the vanity of childhood and youth And a bove all I have felt the stings of a guilty Conscience for the great Disobedience to my parents in not taking their advice wherewith the Lord has seen fit to visit me with this affliction but my affliction is a light affliction to what I have deserved but the Lord has been very merciful to me for he has not cut me of in my sins but he has given me this space for repentance. For blessed be God my frequent schemes for destroying myself were all most all defeated. But oh the dreadful powerful force of temptation for being much better I went to stay with Mrs Welham she being gone out one day and left me alone soon after she was gone I thought within myself surely I am one of the most miserable objects that ever the Lord let live surely no one ever had such thoughts as me against the Lord and I arose from my seat to go into the bedroom and as I was going I thought within myself ah me I will retire into the most remotest part of the wood and there execute my design and that design was that wilful design of self destruction But the Lord was pleased to stop me in this mad career for seeing the Bible lay upon the shelf I took it down and opened it and the first place that I found was the fourth chapter of S. Luke where it tells us how our blessed Lord was tempted of Satan I read it and it seemed to give me some relief for now and not till now have I been convinced of my lost and sinful state not till now have I seen what a miserable condition I have brought myself into by my sins for now do I see myself lost and undone for ever undone the Lord does take pity of me and help me out of this miserable condition.

But the only object I have now in view is that of approaching death I feel assured that sooner or later I must die and oh but after death I must come to Judgement what can I do to be saved what can I do to be saved from the wrath of that God which my sins have deserved which way can I turn oh whither must I flee to find the Lord wretch wretch that I am who shall deliver me from the body of this death that I have been seeking what will become of me ah me what will become of me when I come to die and kneel before the Lord my maker oh with what confidence can I approach the mercy seat of God oh with what confidence can I approach it. And with what words must I chuse to address the Lord my maker pardon mine inquity pardon mine inquity O Lord for It is Great Oh how great is thy mercy oh thou most merciful Lord for thou knowest even the secret desires of me thine unworthy servant.

O Lord I pray the Look down with an Eye of pity upon me and I pray the turn my wicked Heart Day and night have I Cried unto the Lord to turn my wicked Heart the Lord has heard my prayer the Lord has given heed to my Complaint.

For as long as life extends extends Hopes blest dominion never ends

For while the lamp holds on to burn the greatest sinner may return

Life is the season God has given to fly from hell to rise to Heaven the Day of grace flees fast away their is none its rapid course can stay.

The Living know that they must die But ah the dead forgotten lie Their memory and their name is gone They are alike unknowing and unknown.

Their hatred and their love is lost. Their envy's buried in the dust By the will of God are all things done beneath the circuit of the sun

Therefore O Lord take pity on me I pray Whenever my thoughts do from the stray And lead me Lord to thy blest fold. That I thy glory may behold

Grant Lord that I soon may behold the not as my Judge to condemn and punish me but as my Father to pity and restore me For I know with the O Lord no thing is impossible thou can if thou wilt restore my bodily health And set me free from sin and misery For since my earthly physician has said he can do no more for me in the will I put my trust O blessed Jesus grant that I may never more offend the or provoke the to cast me of in thy displeasure

Forgive my sin my folly cure Grant me the help I need And then although I am mean and poor I shall be rich indeed

Lord Jesus have mercy upon me take me O kind shepherd take me a poor wandering sinner to thy fold Thou art Lord of all things itself death is put under thy feet O Lord save me lest I fall from thee never to rise again O God keep me from all evil thoughts The little hope I feel that I shall obtain mercy gives a happiness to which none of the pleasures of sin can ever be compared. I never knew anything like happiness till now O that I may but be saved on the day of judgement God be merciful to me a sinner

The Miraculous Medal

In November of 1830, Mary again appeared to St. Catherine at the Rue de Bac Chapel. This time, our Blessed Mother was standing on a globe, with dazzling rays of light streaming from her outstretched hands. Framing the apparition was an inscription: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” When Mary spoke to St. Catherine, she said “Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around the neck. Those who repeat this prayer with devotion will be, in a special manner, under the protection of the Mother of God. Graces will be abundantly bestowed upon those who have confidence.”

The Miraculous Medal was originally called the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, but, because of the numerous accounts of miracles by those who wore it, people began to call it the Miraculous Medal, and the name stuck. The Medal is a visual reminder of our salvation through Jesus Christ.

The Front Side

The front side of the Miraculous Medal depicts Mary Immaculate, her hands open, full of light. St. Catherine Labouré saw Our Lady appear like this and heard her say, “Have a medal made according to this model. Everyone who wears it around their neck will receive great graces.” Mary stands upon the globe as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. Her feet crush the serpent to proclaim that Satan and all his followers are helpless before her (Gn. 3:15). The year 1830 on the Miraculous Medal is the year the Blessed Mother gave the design of the Miraculous Medal to St. Catherine. The reference to “Mary conceived without sin” supports the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary — referring to Mary being sinless, “full of grace,” and “blessed among women” (Lk. 1:28). The dogma of the Immaculate Conception was proclaimed 24 years later in 1854, and then confirmed when Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France, in 1858.

Mary stands on a globe, crushing a serpent beneath her feet. Describing the original vision, Catherine said the Blessed Mother appeared radiant as a sunrise, "in all her perfect beauty."

Rays shoot out from Mary's hands, which she told Catherine, "... symbolize the graces I shed upon those who ask for them."

Words from the vision form an oval frame around Mary: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

Seen as a matrix, the elements of the front design encapsulate major Marian tenets:

Quality of Our Lady As Illustrated by the Medal

Mother - Her open arms, the "recourse" we have in her.

Immaculate - The words, "conceived without sin."

Assumed into Heaven - She stands on the globe.

Mediatrix - Rays from her hands symbolizing "graces."

Our Protection - Crushes the serpent (Gn 3:15).

The Reverse Side

On the reverse side, the Cross and the letter M symbolize the close relationship of Mary to the suffering, passion, and death of her Son. The cross can symbolize Christ and our redemption, with the bar under the cross a sign of the earth and the Altar, for it is on the Altar at Mass that the Sacrifice of Calvary continues to be present in the world today. The M signifies “Mary” and “Mother.” The interweaving of Mary’s initial and the cross shows Mary’s close involvement with Jesus and our world. In this, we see Mary’s part in our salvation and her role as Mother of the Church.

Beneath the Cross, bar, and the M are two hearts side‐by‐side: the Sacred Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and the Immaculate Heart of Mary pierced by a sword. The two hearts represent the love of Jesus and Mary for us.

The twelve stars signify the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles, who represent the entire Church as it surrounds Mary. They also recall the vision of Saint John, writer of the Book of Revelation (12:1), in which “a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars.”

A cross-and-bar surmounts a large, bold "M."

12 stars disperse around the perimeter.

Two hearts are depicted underneath the "M," the left lapped with a crown of thorns, the right skewed by a sword. From each, a flame emanates from the top. Again, employing a grid analysis, we can see how the reverse-side design contains great symbolism reflecting major tenets of the Catholic faith.

Design Element and its Catholic Meaning

The large letter "M" - Mary as Mother, Mediatrix.

Cross and bar - Jesus' Cross of Redemption.

12 stars - 12 Apostles, who formed the first Church.

Left Heart - The Sacred Heart, who died for our sins.

Right Heart - The Immaculate Heart, who intercedes for us.

Flames - The burning love Jesus and Mary have for us.

THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER

On July 18, 1830, at the age of twenty-four, in Motherhouse Chapel of The Daughters of Charity in Paris, France, St. Catherine Laboure received an outstanding grace.

She had been awakened that night by her Guardian Angel in the form of a beautiful child. The Angel said to Sister Catherine m, “Come to the Chapel; the Blessed Virgin is waiting for you.” In the Chapel Our Lady appeared to her and said, “My child, I am going to give you a mission.” This mission was to invite all people, young and old, to grow in holiness, and to place themselves at the service of others, especially the poor.

Four months later, in another vision, Sister Catherine learned that she was to introduce the medal of the Immaculate conception to the whole world. During this apparition, our Blesses Mother was standing on the world with serpent under her feet, symbolizing the crushing of Satan. Her arms were outstretched, and powerful rays of light shone forth. Mary explained that these rays symbolized the graces she obtains for all those who seek her intercession.

Appearing around this vision of the Blessed Virgin were the words : O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” These elements were to compose the front of the medal.

Then the vision revealed the reverse side of the medal. St. Catherine saw a cross with a bar at its feet that was intertwined with the letter “M.” Beneath the letter were the hearts of Jesus and Mary, both surmounted by flames of love. One heart bore. Crown of thorns (the Sacred Heart of Jesus). The other was pierced by a sword ( the Immaculate Heart of Mary). Encircling all of this were 12 stars, symbolic of the 12 apostles and representing the entire Church.

The Blessed Mother then said, “Have a medal struck after this model. All who wear this medal will receive great favors. Favors will abound if it is worn with devotion.” Extraordinary answers to prayer occurred immediately, and this medal came to be known throughout the world as the “Miraculous Medal.”

MIRACULOUS MEDAL PRAYER

O Virgin Mother of God,

Mary Immaculate,

we dedicate and

Consecrate ourselves

to you under the title

Of Our Lady of the

Miraculous Medal.

May this medal be

for each of us

a sure sign of our affection for us

and a constant reminder of our duties

toward you.

Ever while wearing it,

may we be blessed by your loving protection

and preserved in the grace of your Son.

O Most powerful Virgin, Mother of our Savior,

keep us close to you every moment of our lives.

Obtain for us, your children, the grace of

a happy death; so that, in Union with you,

we may enjoy the bliss of the heaven forever.

On Feb 3rd, we venerate Hoodoo Saint, Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange on the 144th anniversary of her passing. 🕊

Born in Santiago de Cuba, Mother Mary traveled to the States with her family seeking refuge following the Haitian Revolution and landed in Baltimore, MD as a young Black Woman in a Slave State decades before Emancipation. Fellow Caribbean refugees, particularly children, in need of education, drew her focus paired with her pursuit of religious service. Living independently off of her father's small fortune, she opened the first Catholic school for Black children in her home & taught refugee adults how to read/write. When later presented with the unprecedented challenge of launching a catholic school for girls, Mother Mary soared above & beyond the call of duty. First, founding St. Frances Academy. From there she went on to found the Oblate Sisters of Providence as the 1st Mother of Superior of the 1st African religious congregation in the U.S.

All the while, she committed her life to poverty, chastity, & obedience beneath the watchful eye of the Roman Catholic Church. She nursed the sick & shut in during the Cholera Epidemic from the early 1830s- mid1840s. During which, and in the years following, she suffered violence & prejudice on 2 fronts - Antebellum South racism & extreme poverty. After the Civil War, she gathered 60 Black war orphans beneath her wings to care for. In 1991, an Archbishop petitioned Rome to see Mother Mary canonized into Sainthood; if so, she would be the 1st Woman of African descent to hold the title. "Our sole wish is to do the will of God " - Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange. Her Major Shrine can be found at Our Lady Of Mount Providence Convent in Baltimore, MD. May she bless those who would commit their life to Spirit & the selfless work of educator, protector, & faithful servant. We give her libations & extra 💐 today. THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT CATHERINE LABOURÉ The Silent Visionary of the Miraculous Medal Feast Day: November 28

"When I go to the chapel, I place myself before the good God and I say to Him: 'Lord, here I am, give me what You will.' If He gives me something, I am very pleased and I thank Him. If He gives me nothing, I still thank Him, because I do not deserve anything. And then again, I tell Him all that passes through my mind, I recount my pains and my joys and… I listen. If you listen to Him, He will speak to you also because with the good God, it is necessary to speak and to listen. He will always speak to you, if you go to Him simply and sincerely."

St. Catherine Labouré was born on May 2, 1806, in a quaint village in Burgundy, France. She was the ninth of eleven children. At the age of nine, her mother (Louise Gontard) died, and in her sorrow, St. Catherine turned to the only other mother she knew. Standing on her tiptoes to see the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in her home, St. Catherine tearfully said: 'Now, dear Blessed Mother, you will be my mother.'

At the age of 23, she joined the Daughters of Charity, a religious order of Sisters that St. Vincent de Paul founded. It was here that our Blessed Mother appeared to St. Catherine in 1830 and told her to have the Miraculous Medal made. During the next 46 years, St. Catherine was aware of the countless miracles God was working through the Medal, yet she chose to remain anonymous.

After his much-publicized conversion to Catholicism—which was sparked by the Miraculous Medal—Alphonse Ratisbonne asked if he could meet the Sister who had seen our Blessed Mother. Nobody knew which sister it was. That was the way St. Catherine preferred it. She wanted nothing more than to humbly perform her daily duties and devote herself to the care of the sick and elderly (due to the great care she gave them, she is called the patroness of seniors).

Right before her death, St. Catherine told her superior that she was the Sister of the Miraculous Medal; up until that point, the only person she spoke to about the apparitions was her confessor. On December 31, 1876, St. Catherine left this earth for heaven, and after her passing, her superior broke the silence about the Sister who had seen and touched the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Her body was exhumed 57 years later. Miraculously, it was in perfect condition. Even death respected the Sister whose hands rested on the knees of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was declared a saint because of the heroic virtues she lived while doing her commonplace duties. A 'Saint of Ordinary People,' St. Catherine holds the secret of sanctity for us all. St. Catherine was canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 27, 1947.

aww thank u thats actually super fucking cool, like im never gonna be able to articulate it but something something no part of humanity lives in a vacuum, there are parts of you that have been loved for centuries and will be loved for centuries to come, you have the same smile as your great great grandmother and the name of someone elses long dead ancestors, you may not know the names and shape of your history but it loves you anyway, humanity is a constant weave of intertwining legacies ya know?

I don’t wanna be spicy but do you ever feel deterred or uncomfortable with the kinds of epithets or magnanimity ascribed to the Blessed Mother? In Orthodoxy especially, I mean. I’m 110% on for Mariam devotion, really and truly. But I was just reading prose from the Akathist hymn and it calls Mary the world’s salvation? I know it can be like.. the *reason* for the cause of salvation, and so be fitting language, but.. like.. isn’t it just technically a bit extreme, linguistically? *Also* in the Akathist, it ascribes “invincible power” to her. Only God is omnipotent—even if it’s a flattering-by-excessive-praise type euphemism, it strikes me as inappropriate… what do you think, personally? Thank you :)

If you spend time reading any Catholic Marian devotions, you will see extremely similar language used. If you read Saint Louis-Marie de Montfort for example, you will also find him using language describing the Blessed Virgin Mary as:

"It is by Mary that the salvation of the world has begun, and it is by Mary that it must be consummated."

"We must conclude that, the most holy Virgin being necessary to God by a necessity which we call hypothetical, in consequence of His Will, she is far more necessary to men, in order for them to arrive at their Last End. We must not confound devotions to our Blessed Lady with devotions to the other Saints, as if devotions to her were not far more necessary than devotion to them, or as if devotion to her were a matter of supererogation."

'The learned and pious Suarez the Jesuit, the erudite and devout Justus Lipsius doctor of Louvain, and many others, have proved invincibly, in consequence of the sentiments of the Fathers (and, among others, of St. Augustine, St. Ephrem deacon of Edessa, St. Cyril of Jerusalem, St. Germanus of Constantinople, St. John Damascene, St. Anselm, St. Bernard, St. Bernardine, St. Thomas, and St. Bonaventure), that devotion to our Blessed Lady is necessary to salvation, and that, even in the opinion of CEclompadius and some other heretics, it is an infallible mark of reprobation to have no esteem and love for the holy Virgin; while on the other hand it is an infallible mark of predestination to be entirely and truly devoted to her."

"If devotion to the most holy Virgin Mary is necessary to all men, simply for working out their salvation, it is still more so for those who are called to any particular perfection; and I do not think any one can acquire an intimate union with our Lord, and a perfect fidelity to the Holy Ghost, without a very great union with the most holy Virgin, and a great dependence on her succour".

If you familiarise yourself with different dedications to the Blessed Virgin Mary, such as praying the Rosary daily, you will see similar promises that those that do so will end up in Heaven as the Blessed Virgin Mary will intercede for them upon their death. Looking into Marian appearances, you will again see that there are promises of salvation for those that are piously dedicated to her. There are prayers calling her the Mediatrix of Salvation.

Let us look at an abbreviated story of the Miraculous Medal for example

I use these examples to show that Orthodox Christianity is not unique in the titles and the language that it ascribes to the Theotokos. If you have an issue with the dedication that Orthodox Christians have towards the Theotokos, then you will also encounter these difficulties in Catholicism. Eastern Catholicism also use Akathists towards the Blessed Virgin Mary, in fact, the exact same ones that Orthodox Christians use. In which case, I would ask, is it inappropriate for Catholics to venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary in the language they use?

I would, in this situation, recommend both contacting your Priest to talk about the Catholic dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary and would also suggest contacting a local Orthodox Priest to ask him questions about the Orthodox veneration. Because it seems like both would be extremely beneficial to you both in terms of grappling with the Catholic understanding of their veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Orthodox understanding of their veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Orthodox veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary is bound up in the Incarnation and her unique role in mankind's salvation through Jesus. Invincible power is often ascribed to her in Catholicism as well, because Catholics too understand how her will conformed to the Will of God in a very unique way, and as such her intercession is ascribed as particularly powerful before God.

When I was undergoing RCIA, the prose and the titles and the language ascribed to Mary was particularly a challenge for me for precisely the reasons you ascribe "Isn't it a bit much to call her these things?". Even though, I too was perfectly fine with the idea of devotion to Mary. But one can be perfectly fine with the theory of, "yeah we can pray to Mary, isn't she great? :)" and not quite understand what the Saints are talking about when they actually talk about that veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary - or at least that was the case for me.

I hope I don't come across as rude with any of this by the way, I realise I can be a bit blunt or cold when answering questions. I'm just extremely autistic, in the actual diagnosable condition way. But if I may be so bold anyways, I would say that your issue with Orthodox veneration of Mary stems in the similar misunderstandings that I had about Marian devotion and that you feel safe to call this veneration of her inappropriate because it's ascribed to Orthodoxy and that sooner or later, you will encounter more of this language being used to describe her in Catholicism. When I was undergoing RCIA, I did look into Akathists and too felt weirded out by the language used, which is why I feel comfortable saying these things - because it feels very much like a similar position. It is infinitely better then, to do what I should have done, and speak with a Priest. Because a Priest is going to be infinitely more valuable and helpful than anything I have to say about it. I am not perfectly or even well) versed in Orthodox theology or arguments. All I can really draw upon is my Catholic background and how much time I spent reading Marian devotionals and about Marian prayers etc lol.

Perhaps something you might find helpful is reading Saint John Maximovitch's Orthodox Veneration of the Mother of God. It's actually not that long, and should be pretty accessible for you.

This is particularly aimed more at Protestants that are interested in Orthodox Christianity, but you might find that some of what they have to say here is also helpful in some capacity:

2 Nephi 26:33 – All are alike unto God : When will the Church embrace all people?

he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; and he remembereth the heathen; and all are alike unto God, both Jew and Gentile

A loving Heavenly Father would not cast someone out of His presence because of the way He created them. The Celestial Kingdom will be a place where the diversity of the Lord’s children can be on full display without judgement.

It’s interesting to think this teaching was not added after 1978, it was in the 1830 version of the Book of Mormon. Despite how obvious these words seem, this church spent over a century treating Black members differently, denying them the opportunity to receive temple blessings, they couldn’t be sealed together, their men not allowed to be part of the priesthood brotherhood, essentially they were denied exaltation.

I think the same thing is happening now. Clearly the scriptures teach “all are alike unto God,” we’re all welcome to come to Him, and yet roadblocks are setup to keep certain groups out, to deny them blessings offered to others. When will the Church believe the words and embrace queer people?

God cares more about the kind of people we are than the kind of people we’re attracted to

It’s interesting the Nephi wrote this when he’s the one who earlier wrote:

Wherefore, the word of the Lord was fulfilled which he spake unto me, saying that: Inasmuch as they will not hearken unto thy words they shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. And behold, they were cut off from his presence. And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them. (2 Nephi 5:20-21)

The LDS Church was founded at a time when slavery was part of America and Christians used the Bible to justify it. LDS Church leaders used these words in 2 Nephi 5 to further justify their racism. They missed the lesson that Nephi said this, but as he matures he changes so much that by chapter 26 he’s saying "all are alike unto God." They ignored verses where Nephites would discover they misunderstood the Lamanites and that they’re actually not the wicked people they had always been taught. Instead we had 100+ years of racism instituted in the LDS Church.

Nowadays the LDS Church teaches that the curse was that the Lamanites were cut off from the Lord. And later when they embraced the gospel “the curse of God did no more follow them” (Alma 23:18). The “skin of blackness” wasn’t a curse but was a way to distinguish the Lamanites from the Nephites. As the book goes on, the mark becomes irrelevant as the Nephites go through periods of wickedness & righteousness and the populations intermingled.

The Book of Mormon claims to be for our day, and has lessons relevant to us. It teaches about racism and prejudice and how they are destructive and against God’s will. This book is the story of violently racist misogynists who thought they were better than everyone else. Their pride and wealth inequality doomed their civilization. Too many people who read the Book of Mormon view the Nephites as the heroes and the Lamanites as the enemy, but Doctrine & Covenants 38:39 warns that the Nephites are the cautionary tale, we shouldn’t be like them. And yet racism and misogyny are present in our church culture.

I can’t help to draw parallels between the homophobia & transphobia the church inherited from Christianity and hasn’t questioned. There’s no revelations by church leaders about the treatment of queer people nor their place in the gospel. Instead we’ve been taught that being queer is an abomination and the only place for us in God’s plan requires us to live like we are cisgender heterosexual people. Already the basic understanding of church leaders about queer people has changed and continues to change. We aren’t queer because we choose to be or because of abuse or absent fathers or selfishness or whatever reasons they used to teach. This change in understanding is leading, albeit slowly, to changes in how the church talks about and treats queer people.

But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you; in this way you will be sons of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on bad men as well as good, and his rain to fall on honest and dishonest men alike. For if you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? Even the tax collectors do as much, do they not? And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.’

Reflection on the painting

From today's Gospel passage it is clear that Jesus wants us to go beyond what we could do on our own. He calls us to love our enemies. He lived this out when he was crucified. Even at that very moment he loved everyone around him and showed unconditional love. It is easy to love the people who love us and who bring blessings on us; it is a whole lot harder to love people we don't particularly warm to or even like. But those are exactly the people Jesus is asking us to love too. Especially during Lent, our Lord can help lift us beyond what we think possible.

The first Christians had to put this into practice in a very real way, during the Roman persecutions. Our artist, Konstantin Flavitsky, depicts Christians about to be killed in the Colosseum in Rome. They are all gathered in the corridors of the arena. Flavitsky depicts the moment when the guards open the doors and push the Christians out, to be fed to the lions or be killed in any other cruel way for the entertainment of the Romans. The moral strength of the early Christians is on full display. The man on the left holding aloft a cross has resolve and is ready to face death in the name of Christ. That small cross in our painting is one of the first things we notice. It is set against the brightness of light. Christian children, women, men are ready to give their lives for their faith. They prayed for those who persecuted them and put today's Gospel reading into practice in a very tangible way.

‘Love your enemies and pray...’: Jesus suggests that to pray for those who persecute us is to do something that has a divine quality to it. It is to give expression to the love of God which goes out to all, even to those whom we think least deserve it.
