Fixing a clogged sink with leaking pipes

It's bad enough when your kitchen sink drain is clogged and water is leaking into the sink, but it gets worse when you look under the sink and find that water is leaking from the drain pipes. The good news is that the leaking pipes give you a clue as to where the leak is - it must be behind the trap. The repair is not difficult, but it will be messy. If you remove the trap, you can get to the clog better, and you can tighten the trap when you reinstall it.

Place a bucket under the sink to catch the water and unscrew the nuts that connect the trap to the garbage disposal or to the end piece of the sink, which is the pipe that goes down from the drain, and to the wall drain. First disconnect the siphon from the garbage disposal or end piece, and then from the wall drain. Turn the trap upside down, empty the water into the bucket, and set the trap aside.

Lift out the inside of the wall drain with a screwdriver. Clogs are often located near where the pipe bends downward, which may be just a few inches from the opening. If this is the case, you should be able to clear the clog.

If you can't find a clog near the opening, you can use a pipe cutter to pierce the drain. Insert the head of the cutter into the drain, push it in as far as it will go, and turn the crank to push the head through the clog. If the clog is large, you may need to work your way gradually, pulling the drill bit out of the drain repeatedly to clear the head of debris.

Prepare to replace the trap once you're sure the drain is clear. Examine the outlet of the garbage disposal or tailpiece and remove any debris you find there.

Pull the plastic sleeves off the ends of the drain and the wall drain and replace them with new ones. Put the fittings on the ends of the pipes and push them about 1.25 cm away from the ends.

Assemble the fitting around the end piece or drain, slide the union nut down and hand tighten it as much as possible. Mount the drain around the wall drain pipe and tighten the nut on this fitting the same way.

Tighten all nuts on the trap, including the union nut in the center, using adjustable pliers. If a fitting is leaking, tighten it more firmly.
