There’s lot of scenes of Mike and Will being by the other’s side, sitting or standing side by side, while there being a lot of scenes of Mike and Eleven in scenes rather standing across from each other.
And it’s interesting to see this throughout the whole show and how that changes depending on their storylines.
- a long post ahead!
(this might be a long theory post, just a bunch of coincidences of the most simple way of how they frame the scene and how these characters stand in scenes together, but also, it’s interesting to me. so here you go.)
For Mike and Will, being beside the other is almost their go-to move, a comfort during their important scenes.
And then most of the times Mike and El have scenes together, they’re standing/sitting across from each other:
There’s few important moments when Will and Mike are across from each other:
- when in s2 Will was being possessed by the Mind Flayer (aka, when Will wasn’t himself)
And when they’re fighting. Confrontations.
After the Byler fight in 3x3 even if there wasn’t another scene between Mike and Will (we only saw how Will said that the Mind flayer is back), in episode after that, Mike slowly shift back to sit more closely by Will’s side, which also moves him from across Eleven.
And this dynamic continues to change since then on.
Other times we see Mike and Will talk across from each other is:
- in s3 final episode Mike asks what if Will wanted to join another dnd party (that moment where Mike probably slowly realizing his feelings)
- and then with 4x2 their first meeting at the airport being framed across from each other (Will wants to hug Mike, but it gets awkward.)
(As contrast, reunion with El: Mike hugs El, but keeps flowers between them so they have to separate quickly. It’s awkward too.)
The only noticable Mike and El beside each other moment was in s3 in episode 7, where Mike was supposed to talk to her while waiting in the hospital.
Other moment is during s4 at the Rink-o-Mania.
This is really interesting scene because the seating arragnments changed from opposite of s3. El and Mike beside, and Will and Mike across from each other.
Yet Mike in that part above wasn’t able to recognize that something was off with El and Angela.
And when Will is worried about El a minute later, Mike shoots up and immadiately asks what’s wrong.
and after the Angela incident he didn’t even went by El’s side.
He stayed beside Will. Along with looking more at him during the ride back to the Byers house.
The car home, the dinner, all beside each other but so awkward.
Which leads us to next day and this part of Mike and Will sitting halfway across from each other. Mike is not looking at Will. There’s tension, they’re not exactly fighting, but they’re not exactly on best friends terms yet.
and then the ElMike fight in 4x3:
Similar how the byler fight in 3x3 happened they’re facing each other, confrontations and arguments being direct from one to the other.
But also this is the interesting thing that most of previous ElMike scenes being framed this way. And with how Mike’s problem was he couldn’t say ILY to El even when she needed to hear it, their previous scenes can also seem similar, like they’ve always been a part of a big fight/ disagreement between them.
In next episode it’s followed up by first of many heart to hearts between Mike and Will. This time with Will innitiating the talk, trying to calm Mike down.
4x4 The second heart to heart between Will and Mike starts a bit similar like the Elmike 4x3 fight. But it goes vastly different in the end.
But the main point is they set it up to both of these scene be directly from across each other - like fights, like arguments, but both with different outcomes.
And with Mike and Will sharing this talk, Mike apologizing and them re-establishing their best friendship terms, their dynamic slowly shifts back to the old ways. Or close to.
That leads to the 4x5 car roof heart to heart,
and then the van monologue in 4x8 - that’s another really interesting scene. Because we see them sitting beside each other in the van.
In contrast:
in 4x9 when they’re going back to Hawkins, we don’t get any full shot of Mike and El sitting beside each other. Instead we get few shots of them looking at what happened in Hawkins from different angles.
We know Mike and El are sitting beside each other and Will a bit in front of Mike.
But instead we get this camera angle focusing on Will and then going to Mike, then it switches back to Hawkins:
and then we get this frame of El, which doesn’t smoothly continue to Mike, but there’s the van doors in the way of the shot, like a cut or a break in the frame.
Only after that we see Mike and El again from this angle:
As they’re going to the Wheelers house and climb out of the van, Mike is in the center, Will at his right side, and El at Will’s side.
Then, in the Hopper cabin, El doesn’t talk to Mike, instead looks at him from across the room and goes to her bedroom.
Mike and Will stand beside each other, then go sit on the couch and have another heart to heart, about El, about Will and how he can feel Vecna.
This scene very much parallels the s2 scene of Mike comforting Will with touch.
Lastly, El is being shown few times in Vol. 2 standing around them and choosing to go away from the group, after her own idea or goal.
While all those scenes have Mike and Will standing side by side.
Conclusion:
I definitely think that there’s a connection of Mike and Will being beside the other (since S1!!) as a meaning of how much they’re better at understanding each other.
And El and Mike being positioned across from each other could be a form or disagreement or conflict, something that isn’t in harmony yet.
Especially with all Byler fights being framed that way too, but El and Mike aren’t shown by each other side almost at all.
And despite the fights, in the end, Mike and Will always find the way to be by each other’s side again.
