But Kaede’s arc is not as well developed as Kaito’s. Yes, She grew desperate to kill, but at the very end, she gets sanitized of any wrong doing, so her actions and her reasons are nearly invalidated because all Shuichi sees her as his dead girlfriend.

She died more so for Shuichi’s development than Kaito. When she dies, she becomes an object of Shuichi’s guilt until Ch6, in which she is proven innocent and turned into a martyr, her flaws seemingly erased.

Of course Kaede's arc wasn't as developed as Kaito's, because it didn't have nearly as much time to be. Both she and Kaito had somewhat similar arcs about selflessly wanting to do anything they could to protect everyone around them, feeling like they’d failed in their efforts so far, and eventually growing desperate enough to keep protecting everyone within some kind of time limit that they became willing to kill for it. Kaede's version of this arc had to happen quickly enough to fit in one chapter, because the protagonist-swap twist really wouldn't work any later than that. Meanwhile, Kaito's version of this arc could span five chapters and not just one because his self-destructive selflessness was much more complex than Kaede's - in fact, he was probably (out-universely) written to be more complex than her on purpose, because the writers knew they'd have all that time to explore him. If Kaito had been the one to die selflessly in chapter 1 and Kaede in chapter 5, that would have wasted most of Kaito's potential, and I'm not sure Kaede could have quite lived up to that with her own.

I also really think the memory of Kaede is used less for Shuichi's guilt and more to push Shuichi forward and convince him he needs to keep being strong to fulfil her wish. Which is also exactly what Kaito is to Shuichi once he's gone. (And that's what both of them died wanting to be to him, so it really doesn't do their own arcs a disservice at all!) The only reason that's perhaps not as apparent for Kaito is because he only spends one chapter being a fallen inspiration to Shuichi, whereas Kaede spends most of the game like that - unavoidably so, because she died earlier.

Regardless of exactly what the memory of her is used for, though, obviously Kaede’s not going to be able to continue to have her own arc after she’s dead. That doesn't mean she didn't have a great one while she was alive! Sure, it was short, but someone needed to be the chapter 1 culprit, and doing it the way they did with Kaede was probably the literal best possible way to make a chapter 1 culprit feel like an important, developed character and not just a throwaway like in the previous two games.

But most importantly... no, Kaede is not sanitised of all wrongdoing, or however else you want to word that, in chapter 6. I’ve talked about this at one point on my sideblog in which I did a lengthy commentary of the entire game, so I'll quote a bit of that here:

So, I’ve seen people complain that Shuichi acts like Kaede was perfect and innocent and without fault at this point in the trial… but that’s not really what he’s actually doing here. Admittedly, he doesn’t properly acknowledge to himself that Kaede was still guilty, since that’s something I imagine he’d want to avoid thinking about too much, so he is still being a little influenced by his own personal bias of how much she meant to him. But he is also not trying to incorrectly argue, to himself or out loud, that she was ever innocent, and I think that’s important to keep in mind. All he ever says is “she didn’t actually kill anyone”, which is true on a technical level relating to her being executed for it, and that’s the context in which he said that.

The gist of the rest of what I talk about at around that point in that post is that, regardless of the moral responsibility that she does still have for Rantaro's death, Kaede should not have been executed according to the rules of the game, and that's the part that Shuichi focuses on and gets the most upset and passionate about. And yeah, although he never tries to argue that Kaede was innocent, Shuichi does kind of avoid thinking about the part where she was still guilty - but that's fine. He's a character. He's allowed to be biased; that doesn't change just because he's the protagonist whose perspective we see the story through.

Shuichi is an unreliable narrator who overlooks or misinterprets or fails to properly think about a lot of things in this story. If we judged the quality of every character's arc based on how much of it Shuichi sees and openly acknowledges, then Kaito's arc would be way “worse” than Kaede's despite being more complex and spanning far longer, because Shuichi notices almost none of what he goes through. But that doesn't mean Kaito's arc isn't there or that it isn't good, or that he doesn't have weaknesses and flaws. Of course all of that is still there in the story!

However, it's up to the player to notice for themselves what's going on outside of Shuichi's perception and come to their own conclusions separately from him. And it's easier to do that for Kaede than it is for Kaito, because we spend most of a chapter in her head (even if the game is omitting a few thoughts for the sake of the twist) and she openly talks about the mistakes she made and the weaknesses she had at the end of her trial in a way that Kaito only very slightly does at the end of his.

So when it's revealed in chapter 6 that Kaede didn't directly kill Rantaro, that's also something that's up to us to interpret outside of Shuichi's perspective on it and evaluate Kaede's actions ourselves. That's kind of the point. And, heck, if anything, the revelations about Kaede's crime in chapter 6 add to her story rather than diminish it. They show that she was very deliberately manipulated by the mastermind - the person she was trying to kill! - into killing someone innocent for the sake of making an entertaining killing game. That’s really interesting! That adds a delightful extra layer when you're replaying chapter 1 that wouldn't be there if the whole truth really was that Rantaro's death was only Kaede's fault. That’s obviously why the writers included this lategame twist, not for any purpose that has anything to do with shallowly “erasing her flaws”.

Neither is Kaede even remotely presented as nothing but Shuichi's "dead girlfriend" once she's gone, for that matter. Yes, it appears that Shuichi had romantic feelings for her, but the canon story makes literally no explicit reference to this, not while she’s alive or after she’s dead. Shuichi's crush on her is entirely incidental and not the point; the point that the narrative and that Shuichi's thoughts on her throughout the game make is that she was his friend who supported him and inspired him to be stronger. Just like Kaito also goes on to be! Anyone reducing Kaede to some shallow fridged-female-romantic-interest trope is doing that reducing themselves, because that's really not the actual narrative that exists in the game.

I once saw some writing advice on the topic of killing off characters that suggested imagining the character you're planning to kill as the protagonist of the story and considering whether that story would feel unsatisfyingly unfinished if they died there and then. That's practically what V3 actually does with Kaede! They didn't have to - they could always have just made Shuichi the protagonist from the start. Imagine if that had been the case: Kaede's death would have been far more likely to come across as cheap and only-there-to-develop-Shuichi, even though the actual objective events that happened would be exactly the same. So I really believe that they made Kaede the protagonist in chapter 1 not only for the plot twist factor, but also so that they could emphasise that her actions and her story were about her and not just Shuichi.

To the person who left me confused and lost,

This is the last time I will write about you, the last time I will spend my physical time putting an effort into explaining my side of the story. Most likely, you will never see this, yet I am doing this for me. I am done trying to do anything to apologize, to take blame for things that weren’t even my fault. You’ve made it clear you won’t hear or understand any of it, that you won’t make the equal effort to do the same for me. Instead you will play the victim. And honestly? That’s okay. If that is what you need to heal and move on, I accept it. I will take the role of abuser and toxic friend in your mind if that will let you feel better about how it all ended. Because I? I understand. I understand deeply, where you will never be able to do the same for me. I understand we all have different trauma and experiences that make us behave the way we do. I will never know your trauma, because you never let me into it, and that’s okay, I don’t need to know it, to know, that it still is controlling your actions and behaviors.

You are NOT a bad person. Amongst all of this, that is the one thing I have believed to be true. I will NEVER call you my abuser, even when your actions hurt me deeply. I will never say you are a fully toxic person. Did you act in ways that were toxic? Yes. Did you react in ways that felt abusive to me at times? Yes. But that doesn’t make you a person who is only abusive or toxic. We ALL do these things at times. What makes us beyond a toxic or abusive person? Is owning up to them. It’s how we respond to someone pointing it out that makes us a better person. How we listen and change is what makes us truly better. I have done these things. I know, perhaps, some of my own actions were poor and hurt you. And I have apologized numerous times for all of it. Even when you called me an emotionally abusive person, I apologized and understood how you might feel that way. Yet...you never did the same for me.

And I’m okay with that now. Because I know I will never get that in return from you. And that’s okay. Because you are no longer a part of my life, I don’t require anything from you. What I require is all within myself. I will not stoop down to the level of running a smear campaign on you. I will never call you abusive or toxic to the world. That’s for myself to process and understand in time. What I do know is that you were meant to be in my life when you were. Whatever was false or true about our friendship, it’s taught me a lot. Both good and bad. You taught me to ask for help when I needed it most. You taught me it was not shameful to seek professional help, to seek medication, to allow myself to feel the way I felt. You taught me to stand up for myself when you were being an “asshole”. Even if you never owned up to it, truly. You told me yourself you were an asshole, you were mean, and I should have took you at your word. You taught me that even if someone claims it’s not their fault you felt bad about their words, that it doesn’t make me wrong at all for feeling the way I feel. You taught me not everyone will take accountability for their actions, not everyone will be able to see your side of things, not everyone will apologize even when it’s necessary.

Most importantly. You taught me how to move on, how to let go, how to believe in myself even amongst the verbal insults and abusive words thrown my way. You taught me to see who I truly am. A forgiving, understanding, emotional, sensitive, caring, loyal, and loving person. It’s a shame you’ll never be able to see the same. But I don’t care. I only care what I believe. And I KNOW for a fact, I never meant harm. All I ever wanted was a friend. I never asked for you to “save” me as you put it. I never claimed you “made me”. What the hell does that even mean? You didn’t MAKE me. That’s insulting, even if you meant it as you made me anxious or hurt or whatever you meant. You must think so highly of yourself that I’d consider you made me in some way. The fact you think I think that is so...confusing. I never asked for your help. You offered a hand when I was at my lowest, and I took it. And I am NOT nor will I EVER be ashamed for accepting your help. Even when I question your sincerity and who you really were, I still know, that you helped me when I needed it most. I won’t apologize for that. I won’t apologize for telling you my darkest secrets, the things I was ashamed to even tell my own mother. You were the first person I told about my self harm outside my therapist. The first person I told I was thinking of suicide. I won’t apologize for texting you when I was having an anxiety attack and seeking someone to just talk me down for a minute. I won’t apologize for any of it. You never told me no. You never made it clear you couldn’t handle me. THAT is on you. And when it came down to it, when you did tell me, you didn’t give me a chance to improve. The moment I asked for my OWN space to process things, you “dumped me”, or should I say #dumpthem? You did. You say you asked for space and that’s all you ever did, and I reacted poorly. I admit I acted poorly the first time. I was scared. I was attached. And yes, I even had some codependent qualities that were toxic. But that’s not why I reacted poorly. I reacted poorly due to the WAY you asked for that space.

You didn’t just ask for space. You asked amongst criticizing me, berating me, pointing out everything that was wrong with me. And not once, did I do the same back. Not once did I point out that you were hurting me. I was silenced into believing all the words you told me were true. I still remember those words to this day.

“Your anxiety and depression are not personality traits, they don’t make you special or unique.”

“You’re always so negative, constantly.”

“I can’t be friends with someone who doesn’t want to change.”

That’s how you asked for space. I was left utterly, completely, confused. I was shocked into silence. I was left feeling hurt and like I was this awful person. THAT is the way you chose to “set your boundaries” to “ask for space”. If that’s not an abusive or toxic way of doing that...then please tell me what is.

I never claimed my anxiety and depression made me special. I never WANTED it. In fact. I never told anyone beyond you about it until you were out of my life. If I truly thought it made me unique, I’d be shouting it out to the world. I don’t want any of this. That was invalidating. My whole experience, diminished in an instant by your angry, hurtful words. I let you hurt me. I won’t let you hurt me again. My anxiety and depression are valid. Feeling negative is valid. I enver sought out your advice, you just gave it to me, expecting to fix me somehow. This is a process. A long, stressful process that I am consistently working on. I won’t let you diminish that.

I was negative because I was fucking depressed. More depressed than ever. I’m not sure you have experienced that if you can berate me for being negative when I’m depressed. Depression makes your whole world view negative. I literally, physically, did not see any good. You could have told me to stop talking about negative things, to give you space, without berating me for being depressed. Depression leaks into everything. It made me negative. I won’t apologize for suffering with that for so long on my own. I won’t apologize for telling someone else these thoughts and doing so thinking they were okay with it, because not once did you tell me otherwise, until you blew up on me.

And finally. I WAS changing. I have been changing consistently since the beginning of this year. For you to invalidate that in one sentence? That was not called for. This was the most hurtful, most invalidating, more upsetting thing you ever said to me. Ever. In that one sentence you invalidated ALL OF MY WORK. I am going to a psychologist. I am going to a psychiatrist. I am taking medications. I am taking time out of my work schedule to do all of this. I am making more effort to change than anyone I know. I am putting in 24/7 constant work to change my bad behavior, my negative mindset, the hurt I need to heal in order to better myself. So you hurt me terribly for ever considering I am not changing. If for nothing else but this. Fuck you. I have been changing from the get go. The fact you couldn’t see that is on you, not me. I am proud of all I have accomplished, no matter who sees my effort or not. You know nothing about the constant work I put in. You know NOTHING about how truly hard it has been on me. You never understood me, if you can say that so easily, I won’t change. Fuck you. I am changing. Maybe you should take a look at your own change for once.

And the moment I explained I wasn’t sure where we stood, or that there were many things I was questioning that made me unsure if I wanted to visit, you took the defensive route. After talking to my mom and therapist they told me many things that made me question our relationship. That you sounded like a bully, that you were holding all this resentment on me and that wasn’t fair, that you allowed it to build until you blew up on me. She told me she doesn’t know your side, and she isn’t here to label you, but based on everything I said, showed her, both sides, her conclusions opened up my eyes to certain things, certain red flags and behaviors of you. But I didn’t tell you that. Maybe I should have. But I wasn’t about to berate you like you did me. I didn’t want to hurt you and blame you like you did to me. And yet you immediately made it about how you “were hurt” how you were “wounded”. Making it, once again, how I was the one hurting you, not once admitting that maybe...JUST MAYBE...I was hurt too. I know I hurt you. I apologized. But You. Hurt. Me. Too. And I stood up for myself.

And you #dumpedme in an instant.

When I e-mailed you out of emotional distress I was met with legal threats, with claims of “understanding” when in the same turn...you truly were not understanding. I explained how your instagram posts hurt me terribly and you never owned up to it, instead, once again, it was my fault for looking, it was me hurting you, betraying you, making you feel pushed and hurt by looking at a public instagram profile when I wasn’t logged in. I’m sure you felt hurt, I don’t question your pain. And I am sorry my actions caused such pain for you. Yet you don’t apologize to me in return. You never did. You never accounted for the fact that I was hurt by them, that these words you said to world, behind my back, hurt me deeply, when in the same breath you e-mail me privately claiming words of love, understanding, and empathy. I believed you. Yet now, I am left wondering what was the truth. What side of you is the truth. I shouldn’t have emailed you after you asked me to stop. I am mature enough to acknowledge that, to own up to MY mistakes that hurt you. Because I am truly sorry for it. I am. I sought closure when I shouldn’t have, and I know you won’t give it to me. It’s me, who in the end is responsible for giving myself closure. You owe me nothing, and I know you will never give it either.

No. You don’t owe me anything. I never asked you for anything. I never demanded anything of you. I never will. I have healthy friendships. None of them left me like you did. The ones that did, left slowly, gracefully. The ones that stayed (even the ones that left) have not once said the things to me you did. None of them ever called me abusive or toxic. In fact. The ones that are closest told me the opposite. Even my therapist, who I showed ALL the texts to, who I sent the e-mails, who I showed the instagram posts. Who isn’t required to tell me I am right and wasn’t wrong. Whose job it is to guide me, to help me, to help better myself. If I was wrong, she’d tell me, in order to improve myself. She’s seen it all. She said I am not to blame. A professional, who is neutral ground, said that. You have your problems that caused you to act the way you did. No, you aren’t a bad person, but even good people do bad things. No one is perfect. Not even you. And when you accept that you can do wrong to people too, that the world isn’t only out to get you, when you can accept good people can hurt you without meaning to, without being an “abuser” and you the victim, maybe you can start to change too.

I am tired of feeling invalidated by all the words you’ve told me. Anytime I stood up for myself you made it sound like I was at fault. “I can’t control how you take my words.” or “I can’t control what you see online.” or “Well JULIA, I am not a mind reader.” Nope. You can’t. But you CAN control what you say and put out online in the first place, you can control how you talk to people, you can have some empathy and try to understand how to better approach things for another person’s sake. Like you always told me, relationships are give and take, about talking things over, compromising, and yet you never did that. It was always me trying to compromise. You did a few times, sure, but not when it meant the most. You always spoke to me like the older wiser one, but clearly, you have your own faults you haven’t been able to see or work on. And I hope you do eventually, for your own sake.

And knowing you, if you do ever see this, you’ll take all of this as an attack...even when it’s not. And no longer am I going to worry about it anymore. I am tired of being the silent one, of accepting the world only knows your side. And still. I don’t think you were ever abusive or toxic. You did things that were, but you yourself, never were. I’m sure you meant good for most of it, you wanted to help, but you did things that hurt me too. I forgive you. Because unlike you, I know that good people can do harmful things in moments of emotional turmoil.

You always told me to get help. I hope you do the same for you. Because clearly, you need help, not just your friends telling you someone is abusive, but someone telling you how to change so you don’t wind up in the same spot you’ve been multiple times. I hope one day you’ll understand, that you’ll take criticism as a means of changing yourself for the better. But I won’t stick around waiting for it.

I am not here to diagnose you. I’ll leave that up to the professionals, who know your history. All I know is how you made ME feel, how you acted towards ME. And all my guesses are for me to keep to myself. I won’t tell the world what I think your behaviors point towards. I also won’t play the victim. I am not a victim. I am a human, who is learning and growing due to past bad experiences. I won’t be victimized. I am stronger than that. I won’t play that role. I will play the role of a survivor, not just of this, but of myself, my depression, my anxiety. I am a survivor, no matter what labels someone feels the need to give to me. I am in control of who I am, no one else.

So again. I forgive you. And I thank you for showing me all I needed during this period of my life.

Most importantly though. I forgive myself. I hurt you. I apologized. I claimed responsibility for clinging and being codependent in ways. I have accepted it. I did what I could. All I could. And I will learn from this. And that is what I value most. The learning process. All of this has helped me in ways you’ll never know. I am stronger because of what we went through. I am a different person. I won’t let anyone silence me again. I won’t let someone’s actions determine my self worth. I won’t let anyone’s words decide for myself who I think I am. I am more than what you think I am. I am more than what you made your friends and husband think I am. I am more than what you made instagram think I am. I am more and I won’t do the same to you. I am a good person. I mean well. And truly. I wish nothing but the best for you. I wish you healing and growth and getting help.

So. For the last time.
