ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Negotiations are at a standstill in Hollywood as the Writers Guild of America strike continues. On Tuesday, Atlanta members of SAG-AFTRA, the actors and artists union, will gather for a rally at the Teamsters Hall in Atlanta in support of their ongoing strike and in recognition of a National Day of Solidarity. The writers strike started on May 2, shutting down most TV and film production in the U.S. In July, SAG-AFTRA voted unanimously to go on strike, joining the writers guild. They made the decision following failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers. What performers want is higher wages to keep up with inflation. They’re also asking for protections against AI so their voices and likeness cannot be used without their permission.

US concerned over approved “foreign agents” bill by Georgian parliament while having similar legislation
US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel claimed on Wednesday that his country remained deeply concerned about the draft law on “foreign agents”, which was approved in the first reading by the Georgian parliament, sparking protests in the capital city of Tbilisi.
We will continue to urge and reiterate with the Georgian government our dire concern at this legislation.
Patel warned that if passed, the bill could “stigmatise civil society organisations working to improve the lives of Georgian citizens and media organisations operating within Georgia to provide information to Georgian citizens.”
Georgia voted in favour of advancing a bill on “foreign agents” on Wednesday, but critics argued it would undermine the country’s democracy. The EU called the approval “very concerning development”, claiming that final passage of the bill would have a negative impact on Georgia’s EU accession process.
The bill requires organisations, including media outlets, that receive over 20% of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence. Such organisations will be obliged to publish annual financial reports.
The United States has a similar law introduced in 1938 entitled the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA). It requires certain agents of foreign principals who engage in political or other activities specified in the act to disclose publicly their relationship with the foreign principal on a time-to-time basis. Such organisations must also report their activities, revenues and expenditures supporting such activities, according the US Department of Justice.

Editorial Roundup: Georgia
Dalton Daily Citizen. August 16, 2023. Editorial: Be mindful of charity scams As we watch the truly devastating impact of the wildfires that have hit parts of Hawaii, many of us may feel a need to respond with a call to action. The images have implored many of us to find ways to help, even in some small way. And although we are seeking ways to help out, please be mindful and do some research…

Constitutional Court of Georgia approves impeachment of President Salome Zourabichvili
Six of the nine constitutional court judges voted in favour of allowing the Georgian Parliament to continue impeachment proceedings for violating the Constitution.
Zourabichvili violated the Georgian Constitution by travelling outside the country and meeting with foreign officials without prior government permission.
The ruling Georgian Dream Party initiated a campaign to impeach Zourabichvili in September, alleging that the president made official visits despite government prohibitions.
Parliament announced in late August that it had not authorised 10 official visits by the president. The next day, Zourabishvili flew to Germany for another official visit.
