Le bureau des messageries est séparé de l'Immeuble principal de façon à permettre un accès plus facile aux camions. ACDF Architecture turns historic Montreal railway station into offices

Canadian studio ACDF Architecture has transformed the arches of Montreal's Gare Viger into contemporary offices for software company Lightspeed.

The local studio undertook the project as the third stage of a five-phase plan to turn the grand hotel and railway building, which was built in 1989, into offices.

ACDF Architecture aimed to keep the character of Gare Viger's Châteauesque architecture while introducing contemporary design elements.

The offices are for Lightspeed, an entrepreneur-focussed software company with over 640 employees.

The dark elevator hall is Lightspeed's central hub

ACDF Architecture transformed a 929-square-metre storage unit on the railway hotel's fifth floor into a network of professional rooms.

Upon arriving on the fifth floor, visitors enter a dark, circular elevator hall, the central hub of Lightspeed's offices.

An adjacent curved training room features new white oak bleachers and original exposed brick walls, which are visible through glass windows, and contrast with the dark hall.

"Remnants of the building's existing shell offer a backdrop to the contemporary atmosphere of the office space," ACDF Architecture told Dezeen.

To the east and west of the main hall, the offices' monochrome theme continues in the form of bright white corridors with curved, cavernous ceilings.

These white corridors create a transition between the offices' dark elevator hall and the brighter meeting rooms and work zones that extend beyond them, which are complete with more exposed brick walls and light wooden beams.

Lightspeed's offices are furnished with pieces by American office furniture makers Haworth, and custom pieces by Claste Collection.

ACDF Architecture was met with multiple challenges that come with renovating an old building, including regulatory requirements.

The interiors take into account Gare Viger's original architecture

A boardroom on the sixth floor was fitted with a new evacuation corridor that crosses through the exposed wooden structure of the offices' attic and connects to an existing exit.

In order to maintain the roof's exposed wooden beams which inform the offices' design, an exterior roof insulation strategy was put in place.

Exposed brick walls are a key design feature

The offices also function with an ambient lighting scheme. This combats the lack of natural lighting offered by Gare Viger.

"The architects uncovered remaining bricks, stones walls, industrial steel beams and the timber structure of the attic to expose raw materials," said ACDF Architecture.

"This creates a fruitful contrast between old rough walls and new rectilinear geometry that highlights the space's qualities."

Lightspeed's offices are a mix of dark and light spaces

Lightspeed's offices are also designed to optimise flexible workspaces that can be rearranged without disruption. For example, dark ceilings allow cable trays to be placed anywhere and mean that additional lighting can be subtly fitted when necessary.

"We created work areas that would never be limited by architectural ceilings that do not correspond to the arrangement of workstations," explained ACDF Architecture.

Cavernous ceilings soften the rooms' sharper shapes

The firm is now focussed on the fourth phase of completing Lightspeed's offices. This phase will address implementing social distancing measures as part of the offices' layout.

Currently, Lightspeed's offices occupy half of Gare Viger's ground floor, as well as levels three, four, five and six.

The final two phases of ACDF Architecture's project will extend the offices to the remaining half of the ground floor, and level two. By September 2022, the whole of Gare Viger will be dedicated to Lightspeed's offices.

Designers everywhere are envisaging innovative ways to improve the spaces we work in. Beyond Space has designed a colourful office built in a reconfigurable grid system that allows users to change the office's layout to suit their needs. Triodos Bank is an office building in the Netherlands that can be taken apart and remounted. 

ACDF Architecture is led by Maxime-Alexis Frappier, Joan Renaud and Étienne Laplante Courchesne. The firm was founded in 2006.

Il primato del Toro, una splendida realtà.

(Michele Climaco) - Dal pentolone ribollente di un campionato in cui sembra vigere la legge dell’alternanza in testa alla classifica, ecco spuntare il primato del Nardò. Lo sbarco granata in vetta alla graduatoria coincide con la quarta vittoria consecutiva di questo magico scorcio di stagione. Un filotto di successi che rappresenta quasi una sorta di alterazione del dna di un torneo, che procede per il resto nel segno di un grande equilibrio e di una discontinuità evidente tra le pretendenti al salto di categoria. Un primato provvisorio, certo, in virtù delle tante gare da recuperare da parte di tutte le inseguitrici, ma che è una immensa gratificazione per una stagione partita tra mille problemi e incognite. La rincorsa verso la beata solitudine della vetta, iniziata subito dopo il ko di Bitonto, si è quindi compiuta grazie al largo successo agguantato contro il Brindisi. Non tragga però in inganno il 4-0 finale, perché non è stata una vittoria facile. Per un’ora gli adriatici hanno opposto una lucida e strenua resistenza, indossando la mimetica e l’elmetto. E’ stata una partita complicata, che gli uomini di Danucci sono riusciti a riportare sui binari giusti con la spettacolare azione da cui è scaturito il vantaggio siglato da Rimoli. Un gol che, interrompendo quel flusso di autostima che aveva fin lì tenuto in piedi il Brindisi, lo ha esposto ad un vero e proprio tornado granata. E così nel volgere di appena due minuti il Nardò ha trovato seconda e terza rete, mandando in archivio il match con largo e insperato anticipo. Il sigillo finale di Gallo è servito solo per definire il punteggio finale di una vittoria casalinga contro il Brindisi che mancava ormai  da 26 anni. Precisamente dai tempi dell’aurea presidenza di Benito Papadia, ospite d’onore in tribuna, e festeggiato dalla società neretina con una maglia celebrativa per gli 80 anni compiuti da qualche settimana Per il Nardò si tratta della terza gara in sette giorni, da affrontare praticamente con una rosa con alternative limitatissime, in virtù della perdurante indisponibilità di Mengoli, Scialpi e Zappacosta, cui si aggiunge la squalifica di Stranieri. Potenza e Rimoli sono le due novità nell’undici di partenza. Danucci, pur nel segno di una evidente continuità di impianto tattico, getta dunque subito nella mischia le carte migliori del suo variegato mazzo offensivo, completato da  Caputo e Törnros.  Confermatissimo il collaudato quartetto difensivo over,  tocca agli under Cancelli e Valzano presidiare la zona nevralgica del campo. Il Brindisi, reduce dal ko casalingo contro l’Aversa, cambia invece modulo (3-5-2) e ben cinque uomini. Nel terzetto difensivo Panebianco prende il posto dello squalificato Boccadamo; a centrocampo c’è Bottari in regia e Forbes nell’inedito ruolo di interno, mentre Nives è il quinto a destra; il 2002 Buglia affianca Calemme in attacco. Chi si attende un Brindisi votato al martirio resta deluso. La squadra di De Luca tiene bene il campo e si mostra pure intraprendente. La prima palla gol del match è brindisina, ma nasce da un passaggio errato di Nicolao in fase di costruzione del gioco dal basso. E’ il 19’ e Calemme si avventa sul pallone e fila verso la porta di Milli, il quale si inarca sulla sua sinistra per deviare in angolo la bordata dell’ex compagno di squadra. Sono evidenti le difficoltà nella costruzione del gioco da parte dei granata, che deve affidarsi alle palle inattive per creare pericoli alla porta di Lacirignola. Al 22’ Törnros aggancia una punizione di Caputo e fa partire un destro, che il portiere brindisino sventa in angolo. E’ impreciso l’attaccante svedese al 29’, che sparacchia alto in piena area su punizione bassa del solito Caputo. Il primo tempo si chiude con un nuovo tentativo del centravanti neretino, che si avventa su una conclusione imprecisa di Potenza, e scaglia un destro che passa non molto distante dal primo palo. Va così in archivio con un nulla di fatto un primo tempo abbastanza intenso ma in cui le due squadre difettano della capacità di imbastire una manovra finalizzata ad innescare le punte. Ha un altro passo il Nardò in avvio di ripresa, nonostante la capacità del Brindisi di stringere con molta attenzione le maglie difensive. Il primo brivido si consuma però in area granata: Calemme trova spazio per affondare sulla sinistra e mette in area un pallone insidioso: Nicolao anticipa Forbes e sventa la minaccia. Al 7’ sale in cattedra capitan De Giorgi: percussione centrale e apertura sulla destra per Potenza che evita il portiere in uscita e calcia in porta da posizione defilata con Sicignano che salva praticamente sulla linea. La pressione del Nardò si fa sempre più intensa e il Brindisi non può più essere quello sbarazzino del primo tempo. Gli uomini di De Luca sono costretti alla difesa ad oltranza e pur non riuscendo più a ripartire si difendono comunque con accortezza. Il gol del vantaggio del Nardò giunge al 19’, al termine di un’azione davvero spettacolare: una fitta rete di passaggi corti (almeno cinque), che fa girare la testa ai pur accorti difensori brindisini, che assistono storditi alla veloce triangolazione finale tra Rimoli e Potenza che porta alla seconda rete stagionale dell’ex leccese.    Trafitto, il Brindisi cede di schianto. E il Nardò approfitta dello smottamento della difesa biancoazzurra per piazzare i colpi del definitivo ko., nel giro di un paio di minuti. De Giorgi ancora nelle vesti di uomo assist lancia in profondità Törnros, sul quale rovina Lacirignola in uscita: impeccabile la conclusione dal dischetto di Caputo che spiazza Lacirignola e raggiunge la doppia cifra in fatto di realizzazioni. Giusto il tempo di rimettere il pallone in gioco a centrocampo, che Potenza sfrutta una prateria per affondare sulla destra e beffare Lacirignola con un diagonale che si infila all’altezza del primo palo. E’ il 22’ e il Nardò si ritrova di colpo sul 3-0. Brindisi in ginocchio e gara ampiamente chiusa. Al 36’ Gallo cala il poker, con una conclusione di sinistro in piena area, su respinta corta della difesa avversaria. Poi da Fasano giunge la notizia del pareggio del Casarano e il successo del Nardò si fa ancora più luccicante. La decima vittoria porta in dote la vetta della classifica, probabilmente quella più inattesa nella lunga storia del calcio neretino.

Well, after a more than filling dinner at La Iguana and a brief excursion to Montreal's Jazz Festival last night it was time to burn some calories and an official biking tour through the city would help me keep the certain weight gain from the delicious Montreal food at least somewhat under control. My biking tour was scheduled to start around 8:30 am, but on this gorgeous day, Canada Day no less, our national holiday, I got going early.

Bright and bushy tailed I walked out of the hotel by 7 am and strolled over into Old Montreal. Jacques Cartier Square at 7 am was pretty much deserted with just a few people opening up cafés and Avenue south residences condo street vendors starting to open their stalls. Further south the sun was reflecting off the silver dome of the Marché Bonsecours I noticed that runners dressed up in red t-shirts with the slogans "Run for Canada" and "Great Things For Canada" were congregating in the port area at Quai Jacques Cartier.

Upon further investigation I found out that all these athletes were raising funds for Canada's Olympic teams for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics as part of a charity event organized by HBC. I asked some of the participants and found out that the race was officially going to start at 8 am. Since I had about a half an hour, I decided to explore the area around Quai Jacques Cartier and I walked eastwards out to Quai de l'Horloge (literally translated "Clock Pier"). I strolled out on this stretch of land until I reached a clock tower, the "Tour de l'Horloge", which is an offwhite structure that was built in 1992 to commemorate merchant marine sailors who had lost their lives during the First World War. The Jacques Cartier Bridge can be clearly seen in the background.

After my initial investigation it was getting closer to race time. Now there was a whole animation team that was exhorting the runners to do calistenics to warm up for the big race. Several fitness experts on a podium were doing countdowns to the music ("a-one, a-two, a-three" - all of that in French, of course) while the members of the crowd were enthusiastically raising their arms and legs, pumping fists and doing all sorts of other warm-up exercises to get prepared for the start. Then, just a few minutes before 8 am, all the runners lined up in an area fenced in by a white picket fence and just a few moments after the official countdown began. Punctually at 8 am the gate was opened and the runners started running for Canada, to raise funds for Canada's Olympic teams.

Well, watching all this exercise made me look forward to my own activity-rich schedule, starting off with a bicycle tour in the morning. I walked about 10 minutes eastwards to Ça Roule, a bicycle rental and repair shop at 27 rue de la Commune that is a prime access point for travelers who want to discover Montreal by bicycle. You can rent bikes by the hour or by the day, and Ça Roule (also known as "Montreal on Wheels") even offers guided tours. And that's what I was going to take today: a guided tour accompanied by a licensed tour guide from Guidatour.

First I went in the store to get outfitted, I got my bike (a very comfortable touring bike, I might add), a helmet, a detailed bicycle map of Montreal and a free bottle of water. Our tour group was congregating outside, we had a couple from Vermont, a young man from New York City, and a local gentleman who lives on the South Shore across the St. Lawrence River from Montreal who were going to take the tour with our licensed guide, Bruno.

First Bruno took is into the port area to Quai King-Edward where we cycled out all the way to the tip from where we had a great view of the skyline of Old Montreal. From there we went eastwards to Place Jacques Cartier and pushed our bikes up the gently sloping square. Once at the top, right in front of Montreal City Hall, we got back on our bikes and went east to rue Berri where we were impressed by the Gare Viger, a former railway station built in the typical Chateau style that was so popular during Canada's early railway era. Bruno indicated that this building will probably be renovated in the next two years and turned into an upscale hotel.

Rue Berri is a major north-south thoroughfare in Montreal and what's great about it is that it has designated bicycling lanes that are completely separated from the road traffic. We cycled past UQAM (Université de Quebec à Montréal), Bruno's alma mater, and puffed up a couple of gently sloping yet longish hills. We had officially reached the Plateau Mont-Royal area. At the top, just north of Sherbrooke Street, we cycled into the Parc Lafontaine, the main green space in the Plateau area. The park was laid out in 1908, features two man-made lakes, tennis courts and bowling greens. Bruno mentioned to us that in the winter the waterways turn into a beautifully illuminated skating area. We stopped for a few minutes in the serene surroundings of the park. At the north end there was a map of Montreal's extensive cycling network, right across from the "Maison des Cyclistes" which caters to bicycling enthusiasts.

Page 04. --- UN INCENDIE CAUSE POUR ENVIRON $10,000 DE DOMMAGES RUE ONTARIO EST — LE JUGE BAZIN CONDAMNE 17 VOLEURS  AU PENITENCIER OU A LA PRI ­SON. --- Quelques centuines de tonnes de foin, évaluées environ à $10,000 ont été consumées, hier après-midi, au cours d’un incendie qui s’est declaré aux greniers à foin de M. J.C. Bisaillon, 1735, est, Ontario. L’immeuble appartient au Pacifique-Cana ­dien. Ce foin y avait été emmagasiné par M. Bisaillon qui a son bureau rue Saint-Sacrement, No 42. Le chef Chevalier et les chefs de district Favreau et Marin étaient sur les litieux avec nombre de postes de la division est. Les flammes avaient percé le toit, d’où le feu était vu de très loin. Les pompiers ont eu quelque difficulté à combattre l’incendie:  il faillait, yu la distance des bornes-fontaines, laissier les boyaux traverser les rails du P. C., et des tramways. Apres un travail ue pres de deux heures, le feu a été maîtrisé.

De Nombreuses Condamnations Nombreuses sont les sentences prononcées hier par le juge Bazin, en Cour des sessions, afin de détourner le flot toujours montant de la criminalité parmi les jeunes citadins. René Simard, récidiviste, passera 5 ans au pénitencier. Il a volé en décembre 1918, 22 sacs de farme a la “Western Canada Flour Mills Co.” Victor Sanscartier, qui a voulu acheter des marchandises avec un chèque de $79.85, volé ù Orner Page, a été condamné à deux ans de penitencier. Trois voleurs d’un phonographe avec disques, au montant de 146 dollars, passeront trois ans à l’ombre. Ce sont Wm. Deeelilies, Eug. Boutlnllier et Hormisdas Labranche. Emile Gagnon et Emile Vigeant, accusés du vol d’un automobile ont aussi été condamnés à trois ans de pénitencier. Sur Vigeant pesait une seconde accusation, qui lui a fait infliger une autre sentence de trois ans, mais cette peine sera purgée concurremment avec l’autre. Art. Demers. Alfred Rivet et Emilien Richer, pour avoir voilié 125 dollars de cigares cigarettes et autres articles, ont été condamnes a trois ans de pénitencier. 

Tram Yiramo a été condamne a quatre ans de prison pour vol de 102 dollars, sur la personne de Albert Guimond.  Moïse Bleau et Ovita Thibault, complices de Simard dans le vol commis à la “Western Canada Flour Mills Co.” ont été condamnés à 6 mois de prison, et Bleau à 6 autres mois, pour un vol de $200 chez John Quinlan et Cie. Quatre autres inculpés ont reçu de moindres condamnations. Ce sont: Jos. Massé, deux mois; Alfred Montpetit, trois mois; Israël Cloutier, six mois; Mile Bourboisk, six mois.  La plupart des prévenus sont des jeunes gens qui n’ont pas atteint encore 25 ans.   TROIS ETRANGERS VOLES. Trois nouveaux vols à main armée ont été commis. Les trois victimes ont perdu ensemble $266. Toutes trois sont des étrangers. Un soldat américain est aller boire dans un cabaret de la rue Craig, où il fait connaissance avec deux individus. White — c’est te nom du sammy — allait sortir quand ses deux frais amis lui ont braqué un revolver, l’ont dépouillé de ses $66 puis ont pris la fuite. Ambroise Paré, de passage ici pour la première fois, a préféré s’ècarter plutôt que de demander sa route. Il venait de descendre du train d’Ottawa à la gare Viger. Il s’est avisé, angle Berri et NotreDame, de s’enquérir de son chemin auprès de deux individus, qui, pour toute réponse lui ont enlevé $100 sous la menace d’un revolver. Paré n’ayant plus le sou a demandé hospitalité à la police. Enfin la troisième victime est un homme des Trois-Rivières qui se serait fait voler $100, dans une maison d’une rue inconnue.

DEUX HOMMES ARRETES. Deux gens accusés du vol d'étoffes, évaluées à $10,000. commis, il y a quelque temps, chez le marchandtailleur Arthur Dupré. 211, Amherst, ont été arrêtés samedi par Savard, de la “Dominion Detective Agency”, qui a aussi retrouvé hier un lot des marchandises volées. Ce sont. Emile Côté et Albert Marion, pensionnant  tous deux au No. 531. Saint-Dominique. Muni d’un mandat de perquisition, le détective était allé, hier soir, dans une maison de la rue Hôtel-de-Ville. où il a trouvé sous matelas pour $800 de drap.  

IL AURAIT FAIT LA NIQUE A SES GARDIENS Le nommé Nick Lupin, que la police de Verdun a arrêté, il y a quelques jours, pour voies de faits et vol sur la personne de Mike Starischuck, serait réclamé à Cobalt, comme étant faussé compagnie à ses gardiens au cours d’un procès ou il était accusé d’un vol avec effraction. Lupin ou Meronick est dans le moment à l’hopital Western, d’ou il sortira bientot pour comparaitre.

Le Square Viger

Au cours des années 1840, la Ville de Montréal acquiert par achats ou par cessions, des parcelles de terrains qui permettent le début de l’aménagement du terrain marécageux que l’on y trouvait. On y plante des arbres et on commence le tracé de sentiers.

Avant 1851, un marché au foin et une pesée publique sont exploités sur le site, du côté est de la rue Saint-Denis. Le marché au foin est déménagé à quelques reprises sur le site, mais toujours vers l’est.

Le Square Viger est inauguré le 11 septembre 1860. En 1865, on ajoute des serres qui seront déménagées au Parc Lafontaine en 1889.

En 1870, le square Viger est la seule place publique à Montréal où l’on puisse entendre de la musique. Ernest Lavigne y dirige son orchestre de 1885 à 1889, avant qu’il ne s’installe au parc Sohmer.

En 1892, à la fois pour répondre à des requêtes des citoyens et pour agrandir le square, on démolit le marché aux bestiaux, situé près de la rue Saint-André. Une partie de l’élite canadienne-française s’installe autour du square, qui connaît une période faste avec la construction d’édifices de prestige comme la gare-hôtel Viger (700, rue Saint-Antoine Est) de l’architecte Bruce Price en 1898 et l’École des hautes études commerciales (535, avenue Viger) en 1908-1910.

Dès le début du XXe siècle, plusieurs projets de réaménagement sont suggérés pour ce vaste espace; on songe à y construire une bibliothèque municipale, un auditorium pour souligner le 300e anniversaire de Montréal (1942) ou encore d’y aménager un vaste terrain de stationnement dans les années 1950.

C’est finalement le développement même de Montréal qui a raison de cet espace, lorsqu’on aménage l’autoroute Ville-Marie dans les années 1970. Lorsque les travaux en sous-sol sont terminés, on procède alors à un réaménagement en surface de la place divisée en trois parties par les rues Saint-Denis, Berri et Saint-Hubert. L’aménagement des trois aires est confié à des sculpteurs et complété en 1985.

Tel qu’il se présente aujourd’hui, le square Viger ressemble assez peu à ce qu’il a été et l’ensemble est très critiqué à cause de la présence marquée de structures bétonnées et, surtout, de sans-abris. Le projet du CHUM ainsi que la reconversion de l’ancienne Gare-Hôtel Viger en bureaux amènera de nombreux changements dans le quartier. Des consultations ont cours qui amèneront un réaménagement important du Square Viger.
