Watching the The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1976 - 1977), a grim, hopeless, 70's British adaptation that looks like it was shot in an empty supermarket - lots of empty, dark, "minimal" background. Pretty faithful to the book, great characterizations, almost a full cast (Gudule is missing as usual and also no Louis XI). Come join us and get depressed, yay!

I really LOVE the symbolism of Jean Valjean giving up his National Guard uniform at the barricade.
In earlier chapters, the National Guard uniform represented Jean Valjean’s disguise as a “respectable law-abiding citizen.” It was something he wore to reassure himself he was safe whenever he was frightened of his secret coming out.
But one of Jean Valjean’s character flaws is that he’s become unhealthily obsessed with worshiping these symbols of “bourgeois social acceptance”/ “respectability.” He worships them in large part because that shallow appearance of respectability really is the only thing keeping him out of prison. His survival depends on how well he can keep up his act. His freedom depends on whether he can look and dress like a bourgeois.
Three or four times a year, Jean Valjean donned his uniform and mounted guard; he did this willingly, however; it was a correct disguise which mixed him with every one, and yet left him solitary. Jean Valjean had just attained his sixtieth birthday, the age of legal exemption; but he did not appear to be over fifty; moreover, he had no desire to escape his sergeant-major nor to quibble with Comte de Lobau; he possessed no civil status, he was concealing his name, he was concealing his identity, so he concealed his age, he concealed everything; and, as we have just said, he willingly did his duty as a national guard; the sum of his ambition lay in resembling any other man who paid his taxes. This man had for his ideal, within, the angel, without, the bourgeois.
But not only does he see the National Guard uniform as a means to an end— as something that will help him pretend to be respectable— he also, tragically, sees it as something that will make Cosette love him.
He doesn’t understand that Cosette loves him for his kindness. He seems to think she loves him for his shallow surface-level facade of a “proper gentleman.” He looks at wealthier men on horseback with even fancier uniforms and thinks that if he had uniforms like that, Cosette would love him more:
He once chanced to see a general on horseback, in full uniform, pass along the street, Comte Coutard, the commandant of Paris. He envied that gilded man; what happiness it would be, he said to himself, if he could put on that suit which was an incontestable thing; and if Cosette could behold him thus, she would be dazzled, and when he had Cosette on his arm and passed the gates of the Tuileries, the guard would present arms to him, and that would suffice for Cosette…..
After Jean Valjean and Cosette see the chain gang, Jean Valjean is violently thrown back into trauma-filled self-loathing and terror that he’ll be “found out.” As a result, he spends the next week trying to distract Cosette by taking her out to festivals— and wears his National Guard uniform to them:
Jean Valjean donned his uniform of a national guard with the vague inward feeling of a man who is betaking himself to shelter.
The National Guard uniform is basically the symbol of Jean Valjean’s disguise as Fauchelevent. It’s the tenuous “shelter” he finds in symbols of bourgeois respectability.
So when he gives it up at the barricade, he’s finally sacrificing all of that.
The barricade rebels are in a situation that’s basically a more extreme/exaggerated version of what Jean Valjean has been living through. Anyone who has a National Guard uniform will be seen as a respectable law-abiding citizen, and be able to walk past law enforcement unharmed. Anyone who does not have that shelter of respectability will be marked as a rebel/criminal.
So when Jean Valjean gives up his coat to save someone else, it shows that he’s finally giving up that shelter. I think it’s one of our first clear signs that no matter what happens at the barricade, he will never be able to go back to being “Monsieur Fauchelevent” again.

OTD  2006, a 23-year-old French-Moroccan Jew by the name of Ilan Halimi was brutally murdered for simply being Jewish.
ה׳ יקום דמו 🕯️
His killers, a gang that went by the name of Les Barbares or “the Barbarians”, kidnapped Halimi, held him hostage for 24 days before burning him alive and dumping his body near a train station in the Paris suburb of Saint-Genevieve-de-Bois. Halimi was found alive by a local, still fighting for his life, with 80 percent of his body deformed and disfigured by acid burns, an ear and toe cut off and his genitals mutilated. He died on his way to the hospital.
During the investigation, key members of the group confessed that they believed that all Jews are rich, which motivated them to target Halimi, although he came from the same lower-class, Parisian suburb as the abductors did. The abductors also threatened the Halimi family to send money from the “Jewish community” and “rabbis” if they could not afford the 450,000 euro ransom.
This instance of the re-emergence of old antisemitic canards associating Jews with money and power demonstrates the lethality of bigotry towards Jews.
The aftermath of the Ilan Halimi case unfortunately only gained French national attention. Reactions from the global community were scarce, with only the United States Helsinki Commission holding a briefing recognizing the omnipresence of antisemitism in the modern world.
While all those directly implicated in the abduction of Halimi were sentenced to heavy dues for their crimes, a Halimi relative quotes, “The important thing for me is not handing out heavier jail terms, honestly. The important thing is to open this to the press and public and make it a learning experience”. Unfortunately, when the world sits silently as Jews are murdered overtly, clearly the world holdsno intention for a lesson to be learned.
The cases of the murder of Mireille Knoll, Sarah Halimi (no relation) and others that followed Ilan Halimi’s serve to prove that lethal antisemitism is very much alive in France today.
May his memory be a blessing

you said to an anon yesterday that lestat would probably feel relieved that louis is with armand as it means that louis will be protected. what did you mean by that?:) how does armand protect him in the books and in the show as well?
i’ve only read iwtv so i only know that much really. i’m sorry if this makes it a silly question, i just don’t absorb books very well or show material as my brain gets muddled. also, this isn’t armand hate, i adore him:)
All good. :)
Armand is a very complicated character, and he often does things that he thinks are right, even though others may see it... differently. :)
Lestat goes to Armand to ask for blood in the book, but also tells him about Louis (and Claudia), in a desperate attempt to save their lives. Because he knows of the old rules, he knows Armand. When Armand falls for Louis there it means that he will not kill Louis. That is an aspect of that in (the) IWTV (book).
Later on there is a phase where Louis lives with Armand in New York, at Trinity Gate. It's after Lestat has let the "ever-multiplying" vampires drive him from NOLA... because he is loathe to kill them. Armand had roused him in his coma once to get rid of the riff raff, but later, after Merrick Lestat does not like going after them anymore:
This is from "Prince Lestat" (which Rolin has already stated to take from):
The mavericks multiplying everywhere were causing trouble for one another, and their gang fights and brawls have made life ugly for the rest of us. And they think nothing of trying to burn with re or decapitate any other blood drinker who gets in their way. It is chaos. But who am I to police these preternatural nincompoops? When have I ever been on the side of law and order? I’m supposed to be the rebellious one, l’enfant terrible. So I let them drive me away out of the cities, and even from New Orleans, I let them drive me away. My beloved Louis de Pointe du Lac left soon after, and from that time on lived in New York with Armand. Armand keeps the island of Manhattan safe for them—Louis, Armand, and two young blood drinkers, Benjamin and Sybelle, and whoever else joins them in their palatial digs on the Upper East Side. No surprises there. Armand has always been skilled at destroying those who offend him. He was after all for hundreds of years the coven master of the old Children of Satan in Paris, and he’d burn to ashes any blood drinker who didn’t obey the vicious old rules of those miserable religious fanatics. He’s autocratic, ruthless. Well, he can have that mission."
Armand protects Louis. Armand keeps New York "safe". I think we are looking at a mix of Merrick and PL era with the show's Dubai penthouse.
Armand protects Louis, even "from himself", too, as was stated rather plainly in season 1. It was also already said by Assad and the others (and I mean it's been clear now through the trailers and teasers) that Armand has at least influenced Louis' memories... probably to keep him from (fatally) painful ones. Armand is a big spell and mind gift user after all :)
I honestly think that all Armand has done/will be shown to have done to/with Louis was to protect him - in the way he saw fit.
That is how Armand, as a centuries old coven master operates - he deals with things as he sees fit.
Loving Louis... means Armand won't kill him. Will protect him, too.
Unfortunately (for Claudia, and others) it is as simple as that. Because Armand could not love her.

Carmen Miranda - The Brazilian Bombshell
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carmen Miranda (born Maria do Carmo Miranda da Cunha in Marco de Canaveses, Porto on February 9, 1909 – 5 August 1955) was a Portuguese-born Brazilian singer. Nicknamed "The Brazilian Bombshell", she was known for her sass and signature fruit hat outfit that she wore in her American films.
Miranda was introduced to a composer while working at her family's inn, and she soon recorded her first single ("Não vá Simbora") in 1929.  She then signed a two-year contract with Rádio Mayrink Veiga, the most popular Brazilian station of the 1930s. Her rise to stardom in Brazil was linked to the growth of a native style of music: the samba.
At the invitation of US show business impresario, Lee Shubert, who saw her perform in Rio's Cassino da Urca, she came to Broadway and starred in hit musicals: The Streets of Paris and Sons o' Fun.
Her fame grew quickly, and she was formally presented to President Franklin D. Roosevelt at a White House banquet shortly after her arrival in the US.
When news of Broadway's latest star (known as the Brazilian Bombshell) reached Hollywood, Twentieth Century-Fox offered her a contract in 1941. Her most memorable film performances are in the musical numbers of films such as Week-End in Havana (1941) and The Gang's All Here (1943).
After World War II, Miranda's films at Fox were produced in black-and-white, indicative of Hollywood's diminishing interest in her. As a result, Miranda decided to produce her own films to limited success. Although her film career was faltering, her musical career remained solid and she was still a popular nightclub attraction. She continued to tour the US, Europe, and Latin America.
After filming a segment for the NBC variety series The Jimmy Durante Show, where complained of feeling unwell, she died at home from a heart attack. She was 46 years old.
Legacy:
Chosen by former Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas as a goodwill ambassador in the United States
Was the first contract singer in Brazilian radio history; subsequently, the highest-paid radio singer in Brazil in the 1930s
Was Hollywood's highest-paid entertainer and the top female taxpayer in the US in 1945, earning more than $200,000 that year
Has a museum in Rio de Janeiro, Museu Carmen Miranda, established in her honor in 1976
Received the Ordem do Infante Dom Henrique Grande Oficial, a Portuguese order of knighthood, in 1995
Has a square in Hollywood named Carmen Miranda Square with a ceremony headed by honorary mayor of Hollywood Johnny Grant and attended by Brazilian consul general Jorió Gama in 1998
Was one of 500 stars nominated for the American Film Institute's 50 greatest screen legends in 1999
Honored by the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro in 2005 and the Latin America Memorial in São Paulo in 2006 with a Carmen Miranda Forever exhibit to commemorate the 50th anniversary of her death
Bestowed the Ordem do Mérito Cultural by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil in 2009
Was a part of a set of commemorative US Postal Service Latin Music Legends stamps, painted by Rafael Lopez, in 2011
Honored in the 2016 Summer Olympics closing ceremony with a tribute
Was the first Latin American star to be invited to leave hand and footprints in the courtyard of Grauman's Chinese Theatre
Was the first South American honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her contributions to motion pictures in 1960, located at 6262 Hollywood Boulevard

The Panther / The Vampire
My favourite poem is "Der Panther" by Rainer Maria Rilke, an Austrian poet that wrote a beautiful but very sad poem about a panther in enclosure that's slowly losing it sense of self and the world around it. It reminds me a lot of Astarion and we know he likes poetry, so I wanted to share. English translation first, then the original German text:
Tumblr media
The Panther (In Jardin des Plantes, Paris)
His gaze against the sweeping of the bars has grown so weary, it can hold no more. To him, there seem to be a thousand bars and back behind those thousand bars no world.
The soft the supple step and sturdy pace, that in the smallest of all circles turns, moves like a dance of strength around a core in which a mighty will is standing stunned.
Only at times the pupil’s curtain slides up soundlessly — . An image enters then, goes through the tensioned stillness of the limbs — and in the heart ceases to be.

POSITIVELY GEEKING ABOUT THE IWTV S2 TEASER TRAILER
HERE ARE SOME THINGS I’VE NOTICED BECAUSE MY BRAIN IS SO FRIED
-Armand is now sitting at the interview table-his identity is revealed, and thus he no longer stands by Louis’s side in his servant Rashid persona.
He looks up at Louis ominously-controlling what he says?
He now has a voiceover-he is now an active participant in the interview? He describes Paris FOR Louis “Paris was XYZ for Louis”, taking away his agency. I guess we can pretty much assume the “Armand is controlling the narrative” is canon lol
He’s wearing white!!! (no longer matching with Louis’s off putting minimalist goth)
-VAMPIRE BIKER GANG!
I wonder if we’ll see Killer again
-DELAINEY! She looks so cool! Of course I’ll miss Bailey’s performance but I cannot wait to see her!
Claudia seems to be wearing significantly more childish clothing, which we know she resents. She’s even performing in the theatre in a very doll-like roll. Is it her own choice? What’s her motive? Perhaps playing up her innocence to avoid suspicion of Lestat’s murder?
-MADELEINE! I think my theory that they’re changing Madeleine to be Claudia’s lover instead of mother may be right-I saw a lot of longing glances 🫣
-EVERYTHING about the Theatre and Armand. The fashion? The spectacle? The horror? YUMMMMMM. YUMMMMM!!!!!!
Armand seems to have a different accent here than when he was masquerading as Rashid. As Rashid, he had a very posh English accent but he seems to have a vaguely French(?) accent in the teaser (what Armand’s accent would be is also a wonder to me because he’s Ukrainian but spent the majority of his life in Italy and France).
Him pronouncing Paris and Lestat de Lioncourt really excessively Frenchly threw me through a loop. Lestah de Leeoncourh. Parieee. Lol.
-THE LESTAT PAINTING
God Louis can never catch a break lmaooo 😭 The CO-FOUNDER
Also HE’S WEARING THE WOLF CLOAK 🥲 We know Nicki was casted. THE VAMPIRE LESTAT FLASHBACKS???
As you can tell I’m very normal and well-adjusted

Today's Les Mis chapter describes Jean Valjean's sentencing and subsequent journey as a part of a chain gang to the galleys of Toulon. Published from 1782-1788, Louis-Sébastien Mercier's work, "Tableau de Paris" is a multi-volume book in which he paints a picture of all aspects of Paris and Parisian life. Here are some excerpts from his eye-witness account of a typical galley chain gang leaving Paris:
Tumblr media
"The Chain of Galley-slaves.
It leaves twice a year, on May 25th and September 10th. The galley slaves are held at the Château de la Tournelle until their departure for Toulon, Brest, and Marseille."
Tumblr media
"On the departure day they are placed in long carriages. The same chain connects and binds them all to the wagon.  Eight policemen lead 120 wrongdoers this way. They leave, imploring help from their fellow people, towards whom they were violent and unjust. They leave; and the conscience, that indestructible judge, cries to many that their torture is light, and that they escaped the death that they have merited."
Mercier then goes on to ruminate on his feelings seeing the men bound for the galleys:
"Oh! How I would like to be able to read to the depths of their soul which is the most criminal or the most innocent! I would like to know why, how, and to what degree they have shown contempt to virtue. Is there, in these individuals, as in others, an equal balance of virtue and vice? Human laws are so heavy handed! And then is the moral perfection of society possible, and to what point?"
Noticing an older man in particular, he wonders how he came to be there, with some distinct parallels to Jean Valjean:
Tumblr media
"Is he a hardened criminal who has escaped the justice of men all his life? …  Is he a poor soul thrown into the abyss for a partridge, a pinch of tobacco, a few pounds of salt; for among us Christians, the law of taxation is the most sacred of all; and we know that a partridge or a rabbit is worth infinitely more than a man, even if he is the father of a large family! This is what tears my heart, but the wagon is going to take them away, and with them their justification and the mark of their trial."
He ends with his views on the death penalty and the morality of sentencing men to such a fate for these crimes:
Tumblr media
"Maybe one day we will feel it less necessary to take away the life of a man who is only guilty of the crime of theft, and rather conserve a citizen than make of gold an idol to which we sacrifice human victims."
The volume of Tableau de Paris that contains these excerpts can be found on the Internet Archive.

Janeway, Tom, and B'Elanna jump forward in Time and meet Seven. Post-Stardust City Rag.
“I assume you’ve participated in bar fights, Mr. Paris?” Janeway asked, sotto voce. “Practically lived in bars once upon a time.” “No offense, but this is a lot more dangerous than a bar fight!” B’Elenna said after a snarl. Janeway had no doubt B’Elenna cut an intimidating figure befitting her Klingon heritage. “We can all just walk away,” Janeway said in a placating tone. Still hoping to de-escalate. It’s a different matter being on a ship with phasers and torpedoes, another matter when it’s just them. Janeway shifted her weight, but they’re not going to go down easy either. Janeway hates losing in anything. And her priority is to get her crew out of here, safe. Somewhere behind them Janeway heard someone swear, the sound of breaking glass.
Someone stumbled into their group, knocking Janeway back to the side, into B’Elanna. B’Elanna caught her arm and steadied Janeway. “Watch it!” One of the Romulans growled.
The interloper wore a battered brown leather jacket and reeked of alcohol. “You’re in my way.”
Janeway blinked and turned her head, the person was hunched over and even if she didn’t see who it was, it seemed they’d had better days. Aside from the heavy stench of alcohol, the stringy dirty blonde hair was all over the place preventing Janeway from seeing any discernible features. “Mind your business.” “Funny,” the interloper said with a rasp to their voice. “That was what I was trying to do.” And then almost suddenly, the leather jacket interloper bashed their head against the lead Romulan. The Romulan reared back falling against a stool and crashing to the floor. The cronies of the Romulan roared to retaliate but their leather-clad savior already had two guns out. One of the guns was aimed at the lead Romulan’s head and the other to keep away the others. “These Starfleet trash are my bounty.” Janeway felt her jaw drop when she finally saw their rescuer’s face as she stood at her full height. “What the hell!” She heard Tom whisper. “This isn’t your business, half-meat!” Instead of answering, a heavy boot stomped on the leg of the Romulan gang leader. Janeway cringed, hearing bone break. The Romulan yowled. “This is Ranger business. They’re my bounty. And if you call me that again,” Seven, and it was Seven. No one else had that profile, that distinctive Ocular implant. But the expression on her face was wholly alien. “I’ll tear your arm off and beat your friends with it.” The tension was palpable but the energy had shifted in their favor. Seven turned her head tagging each and every occupant in the room and they visibly recoiled. And then she turned her gaze at them and Janeway found herself, not recoiling exactly but taking a startled step back. Janeway was used to being on the receiving end of Seven’s furious stares but she was used to Seven's furious stares in a placid facade. There was a rawness in her expression that reminded Kathryn far too much of the first time Seven of Nine woke-up in the sick bay after her exo-plating was removed. Tom was not used to Seven's glares. And seemed to have taken a step back almost behind B’Elenna. “Let’s go.” Seven threw some credit chips on the bar and then swept away. She clearly expects them to follow. At least that part of Seven had not changed. Janeway looked at Tom and B'Elanna and then nodded her permission to follow Seven. They stumbled out of the bar into a chilly and sandy street. Seven was a few steps away from them. “What the hell is going on?” B’Elenna demanded.
“I have no idea,” Janeway admitted. “But we have to catch up with Seven.” “Or someone who looks like Seven,” Tom said. “Either way, we have to go,” Janeway said picking up the pace.
