idk if this counts but the skyboxes from the PS1 Spyro games
that like, triangular multicolor gradient thing going on
ok wow this turned out super interesting!!
i assumed that this was just prerendered somewhere and then brought into the game on a sphere or something like a lot of games. but i wanted to see just in case so i found a model rip and UH?
Tumblr media
ACTUALLY IT TURNS OUT THEY JUST PAINTED THEM DIRECTLY ONTO A SPHERE USING THE VERTEX COLORS?
this absolutely saves a Ton of space back in the era of early 3d games not needing a giant skybox texture & saves a ton on rendering too it just caught me sooo off guard. but that explains why theyre triangular, and gradient!! when you paint vertex colors, two vertices next to eachother will blend into eachother from one's color to the next. essentially every point on this sphere's color bleeds into all the surrounding points. someone sure had fun with this

Pro Tip: If a company you're interviewing for ever tells you: 'We don't have a crunch culture!', your question should be:
"Do you deliver everything to plan?" And when the answer is some roundabout way of saying "No",
You will be crunching. Because bitch, that work has to fit SOMEWHERE.

Elly's Adventure
^^^ this is the trailer
Tumblr media
"ELLY'S ADVENTURE" is a small funny game of action. I made most of it. It invokes a graphical style much like a certain handheld device that changed the world. It's a game of simple patterns, of movement, of how fun it is to play with toys. It is about a girl on a journey to get back what's most important. It is not a particularly long or demanding game but I hope you will enjoy it regardless.
Here is the page where you can download it on your very own PC!!!!
Thanks, and have fun.

Or! Very different! Return of the Obra Dinn
Tumblr media
ok now THIS i have absolutely no idea. i have been thinking about her ever since it came out and i am at a complete loss. so i will do some digging
ok SO. it does something super similar to what i was speculating for sable by rendering the scene to a texture for edge detection. each individual part is given a random color so it can know what to draw lines between
Tumblr media
it also passes lighting + some extra colors to pick which textures & dither pattern to use. red here is the lighting!
Tumblr media
they found a way to have all that information in just one texture but i showed both of them just for claritys sake. in the actual game it only needs one!! super fast
and then we have the part that i have had nooo idea how they did, the final result with all the dithering. this is done in a full screen post process effect!
Tumblr media
i know theres way to convert images into 1-bit dithered images using something called a dither pattern, but i dont 100% understand the technology behind it
Tumblr media
i also know its incredibly hard to make look good when moving the camera around. and so did the guy making obra dinn! so he spent 100 hours experimenting to get it to look natural and finally cracking it by mapping the dither pattern to a sphere that follows you, and sampling the sphere from the angle you look at things from

GRIM: A Retro FPS-Styled TTRPG, inspired by Quake, has released on itch.io and DriveThruRPG!
ITCH.IO
DRIVETHRURPG
Tumblr media
In a time far beyond Earth’s exodus, explorers have unearthed relics and ancient architecture that are said to be older than the cosmos itself, shattering all theories of the creation of the universe and its age. You and your allies, assigned by the Martyrs of Free Olympia or the Elysian Coalition, are tasked to investigate ruins on the planet Gamma Rho Iota Mu, simply referred to as GRIM, to find any traces of life that are rumored to lay beneath the only structure on the planet: a towering obelisk.
Countless explorers sent to GRIM have delved into these ruins, but none have returned. Many denizens of Free Olympia and beyond have feared that their planet will be next to succumb to GRIM's grasp, and some have fallen to their knees to worship this fated harbinger of doom.  All seemed hopeless and lost...
Tumblr media
Inspired by prolific FPS games like the Quake series, GRIM's mechanics are quick, brutal, and easy to understand without sacrificing its immense depth.Using either the flip of a coin or a six-sided die (d6), use Combat Skills to speed around combat maps and frag enemies, or use Roleplaying Skills either in or out of combat to navigate the dark and oppressive world beyond the Whispering Gate.
This game is meant to be played with a Watcher (GM / DM), and 1-6 other players.
Tumblr media
If this game reaches certain goals within 30 days, more content will be added to both the handbook and beyond!
$300: This game is fully funded! Thank you so much!
$600: 5 new Pre-Made Battlemaps for combat encounters will be added to the handbook!
$800: GRIM, The Palace of Eyes,  a setting expansion for GRIM, will be released! Explore a realm tucked between dimensions, and fight eldritch horrors while navigating expansive castles and dungeons. Will include more unique enemies, weapons, powerups, and settings!
$1,500: A printed run of GRIM will be made and released!
$3,000: Beyond the main theme already released, an entire soundtrack for GRIM will be created! Enjoy intense combat music and horrifying ambient tracks that will immerse you even further into the world of GRIM!
$3,000+: ??? (more goals will be released! I'll immediately jump for joy, however.)
