Karl Bryullov (Russian, 1799-1852) Genseric's invasion of Rome, ca.1833-36 State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow
Genseric was king of the Vandals and Alans (Germanic tribes) from 428 to 477 AD. He conquered a large part of Roman Africa and in 455 sacked Rome. He played a key role in the decline of the Western Roman Empire during the 5th century. Genseric succeeded his brother Gunderic at a time when the Vandals were settled in Baetica (modern Andalusia, Spain).

Historical parallels between Roman Empire and Berserk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Casca was originally a Roman Man:
Publius Servilius Casca
Publius Servilius Casca Longus (died c. 42 BC) was one of the assassins of Julius Caesar. He and several other senators conspired to kill him, a plan which they carried out on 15 March 44 BC. Afterward, Casca fought with the liberators during the Liberators' civil war. He is believed to have died at the Battle of Phillipi either by suicide or by Octavian's forces.
Despite his being initially a childhood friend of Caesar, Casca and his brother Titedius joined in the assassination. Casca struck the first blow, attacking Caesar from behind and hitting his bare shoulders, after Tillius Cimber had distracted the dictator by grabbing his toga. Caesar replied "Casca, you villain, what are you doing?" and tussled with him for several seconds. Casca simultaneously shouted to his brother in Greek, "Brother, help me!" The other assassins then joined in.
Casca joined Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus, the leaders of the assassins, during the Liberators' civil war against the Second Triumvirate, Caesar's former supporters.
Casca is commemorated on a coin along with Brutus, in which a bearded figure is depicted next to his name. However, this appears to be the god Neptune rather than a portrait of Casca.
Neptune is the Roman god of freshwater and the sea in Roman religion. He is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon.

Guts: "Anytime she stands next to water, nothing good ever comes of it ..."

Calpurnia was either the third or fourth wife of Julius Caesar, and the one to whom he was married at the time of his assassination. According to contemporary sources, she was a good and faithful wife, in spite of her husband's infidelity; and, forewarned of the attempt on his life, she endeavored in vain to prevent his murder. Her contemporaries describe Calpurnia as a humble, often shy woman. The night before his assassination, Calpurnia dreamed that Caesar had been wounded, and lay dying in her arms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gaiseric (c. 389 – 25 January 477), also known as Geiseric or Genseric was king of the Vandals and Alans from 428 to 477. He ruled over a kingdom and played a key role in the decline of the Western Roman Empire during the 5th century.
(Sack of Rome in 455) Gaiseric's invasion was a devastating blow to the empire itself, so much so that historian Michael Grant claims, "Gaiseric contributed more to the collapse of the western Roman Empire than any other single man."
Before Gaiseric marched upon Rome, Pope Leo I implored him not to destroy the ancient city or murder its inhabitants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gaiseric agreed and the gates of Rome were thrown open to him and his men. Once inside the city, the invaders plundered it thoroughly, including the Jupiter Capitolinus temple "Gaiseric contributed more to the collapse of the western Roman Empire than any other single man."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marcus Junius Brutus was a Roman politician, orator, and the most famous of the assassins of Julius Caesar. He also was close to Caesar. Brutus eventually came to oppose Caesar and sided with Pompey against Caesar's forces during the ensuing civil war (49–45 BC). Pompey was defeated at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48, after which Brutus surrendered to Caesar, who granted him amnesty.
With Caesar's increasingly monarchical and autocratic behaviour after the civil war, several senators who later called themselves liberatores (liberators), plotted to assassinate him.
Popular unrest forced Brutus and his brother-in-law, fellow assassin Gaius Cassius Longinus, to leave Rome. After a complex political realignment, Octavian – Caesar's adopted son – made himself consul and, with his colleague, passed a law retroactively making Brutus and the other conspirators murderers. This led to a second civil war, in which Mark Antony and Octavian fought the liberatores led by Brutus and Cassius. The Caesarians decisively defeated the outnumbered armies of Brutus and Cassius at the two battles at Philippi in October 42. After the defeat Brutus took his own life.
His name has been condemned for betrayal of Caesar, his friend and benefactor.

Headless Horseman
Tumblr media
After the Great Roar of the Astral World one notable astral creature that appeared was a headless horseman. I think he is a portmanteau of the Green Knight due to his knightly armor and the dullhan a demonic fairy both headless riders.
Tumblr media
I think he might be the one to kill Locus. In Arthurian literature the Green Knight is a tester of knights. Locus told Rickert about the divine right of kings and we see a sword in the stone a nod to Excalibur.
Tumblr media
Locus is a knight of renown who probably broke the code of chivalry since he became an Apostle. He also carries a lance similar to the headless horseman which to me indicates a future match.
Tumblr media
I think the headless horseman's armor was built by Hanarr. He has already built knightly armor. I also think that the headless horseman might be how Skull Knight met Hanarr.
Tumblr media
Guts drew a connection between Hanarr and Godot which makes me think he used to live in the mountains near Godot's home.
Tumblr media
We know elves lived in the area and what's more Skull Knight knew where it was.
Tumblr media
I think Skull Knight was the one who beheaded the headless horseman and in the fight experienced first hand Hanarr's craftsmanship so sought him out. Skull Knight if he is indeed Gaiseric has always carried shield. His first one being an aegis which in Greek mythology was affixed with the head of a gorgon.
Tumblr media
So far we haven't seen Skull Knight with a shield when he donned the Berserker Armor but I believe he did. I think his shield was affixed with the head of the headless horseman.
Tumblr media
Everyone notes the similarities between Guts and Skull Knight. Guts has three woman in love with. We know Flora shared a similar relationship with Skull Knight that Schierke and Guts have. Flora had the Berserker Armor in her possession maybe they will be a third woman similar to Farnese in possession of his old shield.

August grows into a child and is now a heavy sleeper. He has to sleep in the toddler- and baby-room for now, until we can afford a bunk bed. Time to open the business, again!
It's time to harvest the hay and the goats have kids, too. Great! Time for the Mid-spring-Festival. Unfortunately, Ibb gets robbed and can't get her money back, even though she tries.
Back at home, Gilbert grows up - he's now friendly (and sooo cute, omg!). Time for more toddler skilling and another baby - this time, it's a girl, named Ceday.

Trying to make sense of Skull Knight and Gaiseric and the empire and the parallels with Griffith and Guts and Void and the godhand and what all this means for current events and I just need to read the whole thing again
There were 5 godhand including Void when the empire fell in an eclipse. Void is the only one remaining so it's likely he is the one who sacrificed, he's also probably the sage from the tower of conviction and so was Gaiseric's enemy even before sacrificing and ascending. Gaiseric has no history prior to being king and was a poor ruler. The person who sacrificed must have loved the city and its people to sacrifice them. Gaiseric escaped and became Skull Knight who is neither a godhand or apostle, as Guts escaped Femto. Guts is compared to Skull Knight but Griffith is compared to Gaiseric. Those other 4 godhand are gone, and the new ones didn't simply replace them because there was a spot waiting for Femto. So did Void turn on the other 4? Is Griffith now going to do the same? If Femto opposed the others, what would the apostles do? Would they turn on him without thought or choice?
I don't see it ending in Guts vs Griffith because a) I don't think guts stands a chance against Griffith and the apostles even with Skull Knight and his friends and whatever other allies and b) even if they beat Griffith, there's still the rest of the godhand

Look who gets a chapter in this snazzy book on women who built the gaming industry. HeR’s CEO Megan Gaiser!
It made me sad to read the line where Megan is quoted about leading creatively instead of forcing her own views onto the team (unlike another CEO we know). We really had something special for 20+ years.

What is it with YA books (that get turned into TV shows) set in the modern era and naming characters Alaric? Once is weird, two is a pattern.
Was there a popular series or something in the late 90s early 2000s that had a character named Alaric that both were going off or something? That's not a name people have in the modern era.

The installation of the Vandals in Roman Africa
“La fin d’un empire”, Claire Sotinel, Belin, 2019
by cartesdhistoire
With Gaiseric, their king since 428, the Vandals, the last hostile barbarian group, entered Africa in order to find a rich territory, sufficiently away from the imperial armies to be able to live there in complete independence: in May 429 their army of several thousand men, accompanied by their families, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar. They progressed towards the east over 2000 km, sweeping away the Roman troops and leaving the memory of a particularly murderous expedition. For Rome, losing Africa means losing the richest province in the West and the City's source of supply. But the counter-offensives did not make it possible to defeat the Vandals even if the siege of Hippo between June 430 and August 431, during which its bishop Saint Augustine died, ended in a failure for the barbarians.
Faced with millions of African Romans, the Vandals were few in number (less than 100,000) but they were invaders who had little interest in signing a fetus with Rome. Finally, the latter was still signed on February 11, 435; the Vandals received land around Hippo while the Romans kept the largest part of Africa, the most urbanized and the richest. But Gaiseric, converted to Arianism, went beyond his status as federated king by adopting an anti-Catholic and anti-Roman aristocratic policy: in addition to the destruction of churches, expulsions and executions of clerics, was added the confiscation of ecclesiastical or senatorial lands for transform the Proconsular into an area of Vandal settlement and Arian religion.
On October 19, 439, Gaiseric took Carthage by surprise and then occupied Byzacene and Tripolitania. Rome negotiated in 442: the Vandals occupied proconsular Africa, Byzacene and the eastern part of Numidia while the king agreed to deliver grain to supply Rome. He respected this treaty for 20 years but the loss of Africa was no less a disaster for Rome.

Supreme King Gaiseric Theory
Tumblr media
I have a theory that the Skull Knight is not Gaiseric but his son.
Tumblr media
Skull Knight seems like he was a young man before becoming a wraith. He called himself a foolish king and being foolish can be associated with youth. And he his lover the Lady Priestess was young woman.
Tumblr media
The historic record of Gaiseric having no children seems like propaganda to justify splitting up the empire into different kingdoms. And it is natural hat the nations who were conquered would want their autonomy back.
Tumblr media
Falconia is Gaiseric's restored capital city, and it is massive. Conquering the continent and building it seems like it would have taken decades.
Tumblr media
Skull Knight that his friendship with Flora mirrors the one between Schierke and Guts. Guts is a young man and it was revealed that Flora was a servant to the Lady Maiden in her youth.
Tumblr media
Ganishka was also an Emperor and conqueror had an adult son.
Tumblr media
Daimons are high level spirits that exist in a deeper domain of the Astral World. I think Gaiseric became one when he died.
Tumblr media
It was revealed that humans can become daimons heroes and magic users. And Gaiseric was credited with ending the age of the warlords bringing order.
Tumblr media
I think this could be important because he might have played a role in defeating the previous generation of the God Hand.
