a list of my fancy linguistic resources for naming warriors ocs ! these are how i put together names like waxwelk, roinmist, furzeglow, sloemarsh, hundtooth, etc etc. <3
wikipedia - plant symbolism
not necessarily for “old” names, but something i still use for both flower symbolism and as a general index for various plants. useful for if you want to be a little ✨extra silly✨ and name them for a plant that might also have some subtle symbolic meaning in your character’s story. looking at their individual wiki pages is useful for figuring out geographical relevance, and searching all of the plants in google images easily lets you decide if you think they’d make sense in reference to the color of any particular body parts as well.
english to old english translator
if you’re particularly desperate for the older equivalent of a specific word, maybe just to try and spice things up or to avoid confusion with doubles of prefixes / suffixes / full names, even : this might prove useful for you ! the link leads to the modern-to-old version, but there’s an easy toggle to switch it around. you can type however many letters are needed and it has you pick your word from a drop-down list. the site can be a little janky and is missing some really odd words to not have, but it serves its purpose well nonetheless.
the dictionary of old english plant names
this website is WONDERFUL, especially if you’re thinking that you want a name to start with a specific letter ! you can search everything from plants themselves to anatomical parts or products to things even just adjacent to plants or related to them. clicking on words pulls up everything from a photo of it to ((usually)) the modern name of it to alternate spellings of the same plant name !
Tumblr media
be wary though, this index is in OLD ENGLISH, NOT EARLY MODERN / ELIZABETHAN ENGLISH. plant names will have many more letters and characters that are seldom-used in modern english, and may only be suitable for sourcing modern spellings of names for you to then use.
manx word list - 101lang
a nice list of words in manx gaelic. contains not only weather / natural terms and flora + fauna, but also plenty of personality traits and descriptors n adjectives. a good resource !
rampantscotland - scots weather
a very specific resource, but a fun little article about different words for wet weather and weather phenomena ! i just really like this one. i love the word plowtery so much. the site also just has a bunch of neat links at the bottom ! this list is more useful for location names in my experience.
dictionary of gaelic nature words
i love this funny little dictionary so much. it’s super neatly sorted and has all kinds of categories from plants to fungi, aquatic life to birds, amphibians and reptiles to mammals. also contains geographical / landscape related terms !
a scots dictionary of nature - amanda thomson
this is an actual book, but one i LOVE picking through. even just putting naming pickings aside, it’s a gorgeous book and i 100% recommend looking into it, especially if you’d like to use all those pretty terms for normal writings, poetry, etc etc. google books provides a preview of over 80 out of the 350 or so pages of the book.
highland titles - wildflowers
another useful resource for scottish plants specifically. this list contains a huge sum of plants and flowers that are native to scotland, and even includes pictures to boot ! it has everything from visual aids to taxonomic titles to even when the plants actually flower and grow, if you were wanting to keep names relevant to a cat’s physical appearance and / or what time of the year they were born and what would be in bloom.
brewminate - shakespearean herbs
this list contains not only herbs and plants and their early modern names, but also medicinal uses for them and cures they would be included in ! very useful not just for names, but even for medicine cat usage if you’d prefer to take other titles for plants they might have used.
the phrontistery
this link leads to one of the alphabetized lists of unusual words, my bookmark always loads up on W since i’m lazy, but it has one for every letter. it’s pretty easy to find archaic words in these lists, and the phrontistery is also just an interesting resource to use regardless !
old english core vocabulary
put simply, this is literally a teaching resource. it contains a hefty list of words for a variety of terms, not just nature related ones, so if you wish to find more personality-related parts for names, this may work well for you. be wary, though; like the plant name dictionary above, this is a resource in old english and may contain letters not part of the modern english alphabet.
general reading + ideas for what YOU can find yourself !
i’ve found many pretty words and resources i’ve long-lost by looking through pieces of early modern english poetry and writing. generic and simple search terms like “plants in shakespeare plays” or “animals in shakespeare plays” pull up pretty decent lists of archaic words and phrases and if you can find any sources that contain further lists— which i have multiple times doing this— you’re golden. it also just generally pays off to search for more specific landscapes’ / regions’ native flora or fauna within a certain area. that usually turns up a nice list of pieces of nature you may never have found otherwise !
