Honestly this all star roster is the reason I think fan voting shouldn’t exist or should at least have a limited number of players per team that could join. There’s no way 9 players being from only two diff teams is fair. And who tf voted for georgiev!!!!
I am all in for the fan voting because the results usually reflect, who the fans want to see there outside of those, who had already been chosen by the league, but for heaven's sake, make limitations on how many players from each team can come.
As hot as Vancouver is this year, no one (outside of the Canucks fans) wants to see five of them there. Why are we filling five damn spots with players from a team that is nowhere near the most popular in the league? Why are we filling five spots with one team, to begin with?
I can, to a certain point, understand why there are four Maple Leafs since it is going to be held in Toronto (as much as I love him, I don't understand why Morgan was the 4th one "voted in"), but there should be maximum of three players representing a single team, no more than that.
If it was up to me - choosing those 44 players out of 32 teams, those eight allowed goalies are in italics:
Anaheim Ducks - Vatrano and Dostal
Vatrano leads the Ducks in points, it's understandable, and Dostal deserves it for the insane performances he has been putting out lately.

I write mainly Tom fics, and in most of them happy endings simply aren't achievable for him without ruining his character

I wouldn't add lines in my native language, and even less in a language that I don't speak well. In my opinion, lines that most readers don't understand do not add any value.
And I have to add that I have seen some words in my [small and therefore exotic] native language randomly dropped into a fic, and it makes the whole thing absolutely unreadable. Sorry, but it's too unexpected and just—well—awful.

What's your opinion on the other games (THH, SDR2, and UDG)? I don't remember seeing you post about them much or at all
indeed! i haven't posted anything about them! (except one (1) kyoko cameo)
i do like the other games!! i've only watched playthroughs of dr1 and 2 (and read a summary of udg. i haven't had the time to watch a playthrough yet "OTL).
THH was popular when i was in middle school (Kyoko Kirigiri and Sakura Ogami were very relevant to my tween am-i-gay?™ crisis) and around that time SDR2 was already out, i think? (yes it was i just googled it.) so i have been an extremely casual dr enjoyer until recently. when drv3 came out i genuinely had no idea and legitimately thought it was a very elaborate fangame some people i followed occasionally posted about (hi, nice to meet you! im Very Dumb!!)
i got SUPER sick last summer so i watched a bunch of lets plays and now im in hyperfixation hell!!
DRV3 is specifically the game my brain has been obsessed with because themes of real vs fake/fiction vs reality/meta-bullshit fall directly into my personal interests. Plus, out of spite (and the game being on sale at one point), i actually played it on my own in may, which has just amplified my current hyperfixation and now im here. on tumblr. actually engaging in fandom. wowza.

makoto is so goddamn stupid i love that for him, he is genuinely so dumb. even though kyoko and togami are supposed to be on the smarter side, they are also occasionally morons (both of them. BOTH OF THEM went "poison? bet." and ingested it) therefore makoto comes off even DUMBER. (affectionate)
Aoi is wonderful and underrated i would die for her anytime.

mmj is one of the most ignored groups it's so sad. like vbs and wxs has a ton of content (probably because they're the groups with guys in it), n25 is the most outwardly angsty so they're the most popular group that doesn't have men in it, and l/n has tsukasa's sister so at least she gets stuff. but mmj doesn't have any of that so they're seen as the most boring and it's so sad. mmj are my little guys i love them
I LOVE MMJ!
I have to admit, I used to not be a big fan of Leo/Need until my friend who was obsessed with them showed me the light but More More Jump is my third favorite group in the game.
We have to respect how Minori is living out her fantasy of being the protagonist of a self-insert x Haruka fanfic, and jokes about that aside, I LOVED the fact event where she said she wanted to get to know Haruka as the normal girl instead of Haruka the celebrity! I also loved her story of getting rejected all those times and still going! Nobody can say my girl isn’t determined! I get that people liking the dark intricate dynamics of nightcord, hell my favorite ship in the game is mizuena so I can’t be a hypocrite, but minoharu really is great in its simplicity.
Also Shizuku is my favorite in the group! I really love Shizuku’s flighty personality and of all three sibling relationships in the game, hers with Shiho seems to be the one the game, and the fandom ignores the most. But I think Shizuku’s arc of expressing that she isn’t perfect when fans demand that idols be perfect and she was so despised for being perfect is great! I love how Shizuku is so full of love!
And Airi! Airi is so good! I love that she’s cute and pink and also dirty and tomboyish! Yes! I love that she was able to reclaim Happy Everyday not as a corporate puppet who she didn’t want to be but her own part of herself that she loved! People also make jokes about her being mean but she’s a sweetheart! I love that area conversation where Saki runs into her and gets excited so she gives her an autograph! I also love her and Shizuku’s friendship! They’ve overcome their differences after a rocky time and Airi understands her like no other. They’re underrated as hell. I also think we should address Airi and Enas friendship more. It never goes discussed in the fandom! They were friends before Nightcord! Girls with loud personalities.
Haruka… I think the game doesn’t give as much attention to Haruka as it should. I mean, the first MMJ events in the English server all focused on the girls individual struggles seriously and took a look at how the idol industry hurt them, and then Harukas was mostly focused on Shizuku and was mostly portraying Harukas overworking tendencies in a quirky way with funny comedy beats. I love Haruka but that event did not do her Justice. And it seems the writers knew this too because More More Making Xmas was pretty much just as much a Haruka event as it was a Minori event. And this was much better. Showing her more set in the old ways and needing convincing while Minori is open to change. It’s far more competent.
Staying on the subject of Haruka, she is clearly someone who tends to suffer in silence when she’s been hurt. Take the very first MMJ main story where she came to the school because of a traumatic event and didn’t tell anyone until the rest of MMJ heard from a secondhand source. She thinks Minori is amazing because Minori will express whatever she thinks at any given time and keep going and never burn out. They’re a Sun and moon type ship. Anyways Haruka is a good character I hope future events do her better.
I also want to say, I was a bit worried about MMJ at first because telling an idol story always comes with the side of glorifying the idol industry but MMJ surprised me by giving a distinct criticism of the idol industry. All the MMJ girls (sans Minori who never got in) were miserable when they were in the actual industry and MMJ is essentially an indie group without a suit attached, and because of that they’re able to embrace themselves, grow, and be happier as people. It’s honestly really refreshing to see!
Okay last point I’m making- the vocaloid outfits in the stage sekai are so good. People should draw them more.

Sorry I have to rant, I just saw post on reddit about how Gege hates his main trio and has completely destroyed them(I'm paraphrasing) and I get it everyone has their own opinions and they can complain etc etc but the whole thing was so dumb!😭 Literally stupid reasons only because they have made so many assumptions about how the story would/should go. These last two chapters have caused such a mayhem in the fandom. People are impatient, quick to make predictions, and get upset when they things don't happen their way. And that's one thing I really don't understand and absolutely hate, how fans of a media think that they know how the story should go better than the creator itself, especially if it's something like a manga which is released on a chapter by chapter basis. Only two chapters have been out! There is more to come! Don't be hasty to judge and please have some patience! Hell! even the shippers are mad I don't know if you ship fushiita, sukuita or sukufushi but it's really chaotic right now. Fans seem to think Yuuji's only purpose was being a vessel(which is a pretty gross way to think about him in my opinion) and now he's useless. Btw thanks for the earlier ask you answered about this because I was also upset about it but that had more to do with 'megumi is the perfect vessel actually' and not Sukuna being separated from Yuuji, anyway you really helped me deal and understand it. Thank you for that! Your blog feels like a safe haven for Yuuji and Kenjaku fans. They're both so underrated and completely overshadowed by other flashier characters (megumi, Yuuta and getou respectively) I cannot tell you how happy I was that I've found like-minded people like you. They're both my faves and I feel so sad that they're ignored by most of the fandom especially Kenny who's only misfortune is being in gojou's ex's ex body.

It is quite a shame that Kenjaku is so unpopular. Honestly don't know why? They have the looks, the smarts, the connection to the main character (although somehow that often gets overlooked beyond the milf jokes), they drive the entire plot and have an entertaining personality. But most of the time people don't even notice that. They're just Geto 2.0.... Or a grumpy conservative old man. No idea where that characterization came from or why it's so prevalent, but especially in fanfics I see it a lot.
Yuuji is very popular, but he's often turned into Pink Naruto, despite them being very different besides some standard shonen tropes. Naruto without Kurama is unthinkable (well until Boruto happened, but that was after Naruto's main development was already over), so the same must apply to Yuuji, right? If Yuuji doesn't have Sukuna, what's the point?
Also, I don't know what it is with this fandom and going off the rails every break week. Like clockwork the "Yuuta is the real mc because he stronk and his laser beam go pew" take comes back every time and people make up the wildest stuff. I'm surprised by how many genuinely think Yuuji is dead dead. Done. Story over I guess. Megumi hasn't gotten any points, so that's clearly not the case yet. If not, he obviously has to throw around some Infinity-level technique to "prove" he's the mc. They also already see Hana at the bottom of Megumi-Sukuna's stomach I guess and/or Yuuji as Angel's new host. Somehow...how would she even get to him so fast? And sure, switch one manipulative 1000 yo sorcerer for another...what a fun and unique concept. At this point I'm more looking forward to the next leaks because it will give people something meaningful to talk about than the story (not true, I really want to know what happens next, but these takes are very annoying).
I haven't heard that Gege hates the main trio before, but I certainly see it paraded around a lot in regards to Yuuji, even though Gege clearly says in the fanbook that that comment was simply about how he is hard to write and they want to make sure to do him justice. Of course an author can get a bit exasperated, but that doesn't mean they hate the character. If that was the case, Gege wouldn't put this much thought into Yuuji.
In regards to the trio, with how jjk works and everything that's been happening, there was no way they would stay together (assuming that's what people take issue with). It's basically a tradition. Sashisu, Nanami & Haibara, Maki's group, the Kyoto gang, they all got separated, some even died. Honestly, it would be pretty unrealistic for the Tokyo trio to stay together. And as you said, things just started to pick up, much can happen. Megumi is probably gonna resurface for at least a little bit before he dies - or not who knows. Nobara's situation is a bit iffy, but she was never as important as Megumi or Maki so eh. If she comes back, I need her to be properly integrated into the story. She has no connection to the current plot, any of the main villains or adds to the lore. Her coming back with some new strong technique would be nice, but what's her function gonna be besides moral support for Yuuji and killing some less important enemies? So far I don't feel like she needs to come back for parts of the plot to progress. If she doesn't, it wouldn't be a huge loss. Therefore, if it happens, I need some character exploration for her. I still think it would be neat if her grandma somehow shows up and does...idk something, but she sounds awesome (knew from the start not to trust Jujutsu Tech, best woman) I want to know more about her.
I don't really ship any combination of Yuuji-Sukuna-Megumi, so I don't know what happened on their side. Fanartists have put out some very dramatic, traumatic and bloody ItaFushi art recently, which I appreciate, but that's all I know. After ch 212 I got the impression shippers liked the new development for the angst. Didn't know that changed, but I'm really not that in touch with that side of the fandom. Either way, Yuuji not being a vessel anymore sounds more like it would be beneficial for them (separate bodies and all) unless you're really into the possession trope.

i love karamatsu a lot and i think it is a shame like. how hes been treated by fans over the years but also that people genuinely think hes cool
hes just like the rest of them hes literally just some guy hes so dude and like hes trying he tries so hard but hes just so very lame and pathetic and thats so funny to me
hes so like. interesting to think about because like. i feel like we as the audience still even after 3 seasons and a movie (hasnt seen hippopo or whatever movie yet) we still dont know much about karamatsu at least as much as we do the other 5. like the movie was ostensibly About him it was his memory world it was his regret he was pretty much the main character, but we barely saw him he barely grew as a character which i get is the point of a comedy show and its honestly impressive getting through an entire movie while moving absolutely nothing lol like we have no idea how karamatsu evolved from just a little guy to. they even mention it in pizza, they never have any idea what karamatsu is thinking and neither do we!! his genuine feelings are SO under lock and key most of the time so its really hard to get a gauge on him he grew up and built up cringe as fuck walls that have Lasted that he only lets down when he sees fit
that is one area he has grown though he is bringing it down more frequently n i really enjoy it like he lets it down a lot more through the seasons especially around choromatsu (suiriku underrated) like he tells him doing everything for everyone is hell he tells him about his crush and how hes worried about how todomatsus gonna be. and hes letting out his more negative feelings through it like how Low his tolerance for his brothers has gotten, on my rewatch of the show hes absolutely just stopped giving a fuck and its one of my favourite things he will just flat out be like i dont care, exclusivematsu is the best possible direction they couldve gone with him, his whole part in pizza where we Watch that wall come down, the bits in phantom stream where hes like jyushimatsu i do not see you. choromatsu i believe in you!! >;D and then he walks out the room like :| NBMVNC literally any time he interacts with osomatsu absolutely No respect
i feel like most of his popularity, at least in the early days idk i dont really interact w wider fandom now, came from him being a sad little wet dog of a man that was prime woobification real estate but i just really like when he gets mean cus he gets so backhanded about it too like hes soooo bitchy its so funny LIKE IN THE BARTENDER SKIT theyre like dude we didnt order these give us our drinks and he fucking tuts and says like okay fine in The most fruity way hes ever done anything and thats saying something hes literally so fucking funny

louisville UNDERRATED?
that is, conceptually, so funny to me
you go there, no one will shut up about it. it's all "take me down to the paradise city!!!" and "woooo animal exploitation festivaaal" (every. single. year. and it's not tourists really throwing themselves into it, it's the people living there) and no one will stop bragging about jack fucking harlow (what's there to even brag about?). i'd heard so many lgbtq+ people say they flocked there as a "safe" city (it is NOT lgbtq+ safe, unless in comparison to the rest of the south, which is a low bar)
like, this place was insanely popular, and no one would ever EVER shut up about how "amazing" it was
and for what? being stuck in that city my whole life until very recently never gave me anything but trauma i'll never recover from. this is one lgbtq+ person who FLED that hell. via amtrak, ironically
& no one ever shuts up about it. i don't see how it could possibly be underrated. even if it were somehow the best city in the world, it'd still be overrated because people just talk it up that much
idk, maybe it's just specifically very many of the people living there that have big heads about their abusive little spot on the ohio, and you're not from there, so you don't hear it that much? idek, i've hardly yet gotten to experience a life where people AREN'T bragging about louisville 24/7
So I grew up in Louisville and I just feel like it's underrated because I feel like it is a city that people often forget about unless it's derby season, but I do see what you mean with it being overhyped as a safe place for queer people given it is still in Kentucky

"Metal Gear Rising is so dumb"
So I wanted to reminisce about the popular reception to MGR:R with the excuse of its 10th anniversary.
I remember back when the game first came out, the main argument I remember from my group of friends was "this game is bad because it's not a real Metal Gear game", which quickly faded away when we realized it was actually fun as shit and very badass. Still, the compromise was "it's fun, but shallow compared to the real deal".
Funny enough, over these 10 years, my opinion on the game has flipped. I actually think the storyline is severely underrated, while the gameplay has fatal flaws that I only truly started to feel after many repeated playthroughs in an attempt to master the tougher challenges. Regardless, the combat system isn't the rant I wanted to go on today.
I wanted to talk about a pet peeve that I have with this perception that this game is "shallow and dumb", surely not helped by the massive amount of memes. I laugh at them like anyone else would, but they also worry me a bit sometimes. Like this.

Guys, come on. I know these memes aren't that deep, but they show this popular idea that the game is just crazy and it doesn't make much sense. But I think it's the opposite, these memes show miscellaneous lyrics from the game's soundtrack and they could hardly be more explicit about the point they're trying to make.
I'm not going to post every little example here, but many of the game's popular songs use very thin metaphors to comment on the brutality and cruelty of war, how soldiers are made to kill each other with no more motivation than to not get killed themselves, how war dehumanizes you. The individual boss themes are reflections of each character's feelings and motivations, which I will admit can get more esoteric and harder to understand at first glance, but these characters in the context of the story also come with a villainous monologue to help you understand their point and how it links to the broader narrative, for the most part.
In no sense is all of this more blatant than in the final two boss fights in the game. First, US Senator Armstrong greets you with a cartoonish speech laying out his political ideology.
And from the ashes, a new America will be born. Evolved, but untamed! The weak will be purged, and the strongest will thrive -- free to live as they see fit, they will make America GREAT AGAIN! (this game came out in 2013 by the way)
His ideal world is one where, seemingly, every person is free to do as they please, with no one to stop them, power completely unchecked. Meaning they would also be free to oppress. A world where tyranny is justified if you can earn your spot at the top. It's extremely unsubtle, with the point of culling the weak being explicitly mentioned several times, because we all know poor and marginalized people are only holding the rest of us back, right? And as if you needed the message hammered into your head any harder, the song that plays during your first round against the senator goes a little something like this:

But it doesn't end there! As you could imagine, if you haven't played or watched the game (sorry for spoiling the hell out of it I suppose), there is a round two against Armstrong, and the lyrics during that fight quite literally spells out the point of the game, again with the subtlety of a jackhammer. This is the one that became the subject of many, many memes.

Before ultimately being killed by Raiden, Armstrong reflects how, despite finding his ideology of "the strong get to decide" repulsive, ultimately the protagonist proved him right because the only way to stop him was by being stronger than him, doing so by force. This point isn't trying to say that Armstrong's ideology was correct in the end, and they very obviously weren't the same, since Raiden's motivation was to ensure that the weak would not have to resort to violence to survive like he had. I strongly believe this is supposed to be a mockery of Armstrong, who even while dying has to resort to cheap political rhetoric to save face. Stop me if you've never heard a politician try to appeal to everyone by saying "we actually want the same thing".
As it stands, the game is loud, and it couldn't be making its point in a less subtle way. Everyone deserves a life of peace and freedom from oppression, and sometimes the only way to ensure that peace is to commit otherwise unethical acts. Rebelling against the oppressor does not turn you into "the new oppressor" and it sure as hell doesn't put you on the same level of morality.
This entire rant had one point: to briefly show people that Metal Gear Rising Revengeance isn't the nonsensical spectacle it's broadly perceived as, it's an action game that wears its political, anti-war influence from the broader Metal Gear franchise on its sleeve, and it does so loudly and proudly. I'm ashamed to admit it took me a while to understand it at first too, but I thought having english as a third language played a bigger role in this. To reiterate, it is a little bit concerning that the broader english-speaking internet seemed to miss the point of the game so hard, and it probably goes to show how generally immature we still are.
If you're still interested in this flawed masterpiece after having the ending spoiled, I was going to stream it all in one sitting this weekend (nice plug, loser), and/or you can get it for 5 bucks on steam right now, since there's a sale ending on the 27th. Hoping big time that Once Upon a Studio has the Black Cauldron, Sword In The Stone, Treasure Planet, and Atlantis characters. All of these films are underrated, and I hope they'll finally get the love they deserve! Also I just adore Disney crossovers in general.

And me too! I’ve been recently rewatching episodes of House of Mouse because of reasons and I just love how they do the crossover stuff in the show. Seeing all the toons from all these movies interact with another is great when it’s not just the most popular ones. And the interaction are just very funny and clever too
I remember when I saw Ralph Breaks the Internet I was very disappointed with the Oh My Disney scene because pretty much all the characters were subjected to the background. And the ones we did really get to see were just the popular ones
Not that I disliked the Disney Princess scenes with Vanellope. I wouldn’t have minded more of that. But I was kinda hoping they’d at least have fun with the idea of all the Disney characters being together. But instead we just see Baby Groot answering questions because hey, he’s popular and only says three words
It didn’t feel like a celebration, just felt like “Yo! Look at all the cool stuff we own, now!”
Looking forward to Once Upon a Studio, so far it’s looking to be a lot of fun!

I got in an Isaactor mood again after picking up my old WIP, which is funny because the chapter I'm working on is mostly Hector bashing Isaac like the bitter ex that he is :P but yeah. They have a relationship. Not sure what kind of relationship, but they definitely have one. I wish at least one of the prequels fed me more than the smallest of breadcrumbs.
... I'm just weak for that "we're fundamentally incompatible and we are toxic for each other and we are using each other for our deepest selfish needs and yet we are so close that we're part of each other and I can't imagine my life without you" thing that is rotating in my head. Then you add the divorce, and you have a beautiful mess <3
Hecula:
"It's not my OTP," I say, as I squee fangirl-style everytime I see someone fall in hell with me, or even better draw fanart/talk about it. I may be in denial :P
Anyway, yadda yadda, it's abusive, it's gross, it's Problematic™, it hits those very nice tropes that make my brain rot faster than fruit in summer (age gap, abuse of power imbalance, mentor/protégé, manipulation...), IMO it enriches Hector's character arc of finding freedom and agency in the human world, I am utterly fascinated by how Dracula's feelings for Hector are described in Japanese, it's Lenector done right.
(I was about to tick "it would never work in canon but", just to get that bingo, but I can't lie. After all, it's canon and I have proof :P although I admit there is a lot of heavylifting to do here since we know very little of what Hector thought of Dracula pre-betrayal)
Isaacula:
The mirror opposite of Hecula. Isaac adores his Lord and would nullify himself for him, and Dracula is, at best, only mildly amused to have a dog at his beck and call, but won't grant him the Special Treatment that Isaac craves :P I still rotate in my head various possibilities on what Dracula does to Isaac, from completely ignoring him, to only feeding on him but pretty much for necessity, to also using him as a toy but without any sort of fondness, just a way to manipulate him and keeping him happy and compliant.
Sidenote, I find somewhat amusing that Isaac is "merely" Dracula's loyal servant in canon, as in one that simply didn't even think of betraying his Lord, but it's just so, so easy to imagine him as being utterly, selflessly devoted to the point of self-destruction. It's because of the collar and tattoos. Because Isaac has a fantastic character design that tells you everything you need to know about him without anyone explaining it to you. (and personally, I've always loved his line "if you have a good weapon, you use it, don't you?", which just. says a lot about him. my broken boy <3)
And second sidenote, I honestly wonder why any combination of Dracula/Hector/Isaac seems to be so unpopular, even back in the day when people were far less picky regarding ships :\ (N!Isaactor is quite popular, but I haven't found anything for N!Isaacula and N!Hecula. The latter sucks so I understand, but idk, are people really afraid of some good lord/servant ship even when positive like in the former's case?)

I see them as fire-forged besties (or "besties" 😏), but I can absolutely see the romantic appeal! Also their relationship is underrated in general because Grant is underrated in general :(

I feel like this is pretty obvious in the way I write but the one thing I love about him is that he isn’t just being reckless for reckless’ sake. like you’re not gonna see him pull off dangerous moves in the air if there’s no end goal, he does everything for a reason! it’s just that the way he goes about doing it is perhaps a little riskier than some might like but it’s for a reason. and this isn’t something that only developed in the sequel, it’s obvious in the first movie too- the narrative just put a much deeper focus on his recklessness. (this is why I’m a bit 👀 when people write mav just being.... reckless for no reason.... just doing shit bc he can.... because really?? really???)
and bc this was a pretty ordinary headcanon I’m gonna give you another one LMFJDJJD my second headcanon is much more dumb and it’s basically. mav likes romcoms. he fucking loves them. so sue him he’s a romantic at heart and he kinda likes it when they run towards each other in the end and kiss in the rain. I feel like after a day of dealing with idiots and flying in the air and nearly dying a total of ten times he’d want to watch people fall in love and sometimes goose joins him too.

eda....... i love her so so so much......... she's basically the embodiment of everything i could ever want from a female character and she's the sole reason why i started watching the show in the first place <3 she's funny and silly. she's so sad. she's loyal and cares so deeply abt others. she's rude. she's uncouth. she's feminine. she's masculine. she can turn into a badass huge beast. she's bisexual. she's a milf. she's a witch and a hag. she's such a tragic character and yet still so fun. she's deeply relatable. she commits so many crimes. she's everything to me.

hunter....... he's such a good character. the owl house always nails comedy AND tragedy and i think he's a perfect example of that, he can be such a (unintentionally) comedic character but when you think abt him for more than a few minutes you start to get Sad. ik he's very popular in the fandom but i can understand why, he's such a great character
im putting gus in this category as well bc he's so adorable and i love him so much. such a cute silly little guy. his backstory was very relatable to me and he reminds me a lot of my younger self, albeit more outgoing and confident lol. he's a rlly caring and sweet character at times and puts his own feelings aside for the benefit of others, which is a side of him we see in the human realm especially. he's so young, even younger than the other kids, and he's been through so much....... someone give this kid a hug please

this golden guard......... he only appears for like one flashback scene but he's fascinating to me. he clearly wasn't integrated into witch society and was going along with philip's plan to hurt/kill witches, which is rlly interesting bc later on philip seemed to take on the strategy of telling the golden guards they were witches and letting them view him as a witch as well. i wonder if the moment in this flashback where they stage the explosion was the moment that convinced this golden guard to rebel, when he saw how people were suffering because of philip/belos.......
obv caleb as well. we haven't even seen him get animated yet or heard him talk but he means so much to me and every time he's even vaguely mentioned i go rabid. fingers crossed that we'll see more of him in the next episode

8. an artist you think is underrated
oh god. so many. the big one that's coming to mind right now is marika hackman, bc she's sonically in that popular "sad girl" indie rock genre (i know a lot of the artists chafe at the label and i get it but also i don't know how else to lump them together) your mitski lucy dacus phoebe bridgers etc. but she doesn't really get included in a lot of the lyric compilations and doesn't seem to get a lot of the shine. there's a lot of reasons for that (her last album was in 2019 and others have had more recent releases, she's british and a lot of these other artists are american, she's a bit more folk than rock or pop) but i can't help but feel like it's a bit unfair. people were calling hozier a spooky lesbian forest spirit when she - an actual lesbian - released we slept at last, a gorgeous spooky forest-y album, in 2015. people lament "sanitized" queer representation, and her 2019 album any human friend has quite a few songs about explicit lesbian sexuality. i feel like she has a lot of what people want in media but they don't know about her.
check out "deep green" & "before i sleep" for the spooky forest vibes, "boyfriend" & "i'm not where you are" for the indie-rock vibes.
oh also! speaking of artists similar to popular artists, irish band soda blonde had a very similar arc to mitski & laurel hell with their 2021 album small talk - they were more of a folk rock band in their previous iteration as little green cars, but when they reformed the band (a member had to leave for health reasons) they went in a more dance-y, pumped up direction. the lead singer faye o'rourke, like mitski, has a very rich emotive voice that makes the direction work, and faye's vulnerable lyrics were giving me comfort long before i discovered mitski. check out "swimming through the night" and "the dark trapeze".
(long time followers of this blog have probably heard me rec both of these artists before. i'm not sorry.)

i was stunned when i first heard no children by the mountain goats. like i was super late to the game so i had years of hype about the mountain goats and all the tiktok virality to raise my expectations and then it was actually as good as people said. like, it was less sad and mopey than i expected, but honestly that was a pleasant surprise. it's not a funny song exactly but it's got this bitter sarcastic edge that highlights a totally different side of the relationship-grieving process. it's about all the unpleasant cruel petty feelings we often feel - the desire to see the person who caused our suffering suffer as we did, the desire to wallow and moan forever instead of moving on. there's not many songs that deal with that so directly.

taylor swift haters are one thousand percent more cringe than taylor swift stans. yeah uncritical praise is dumb but at least they're enjoying themselves, taylor swift haters are just like. misogyny but it's okay bc she's a white woman who's famous and makes bad music sometimes

i'm sure there are lots i could get up in arms about but the only one that's coming to mind is the sexy baby line from anti-hero. like taylor's got lots of cringe lyrics, plenty on that album specifically, but they all work on anti-hero bc it's self-aware - the problem is me! admitting your insecurities is often cringe and embarrassing. insecurities are often irrational and ridiculous. that's the point.

Holy shit thank you for your post about liking characters that are “neither all good or all bad” because i like a lot of characters that tend to fall into the gray area, or whatever that’s called lol. It just makes the characters feels more “human” and more realistic that way
Although some of my aa favs got a lot of hate from the fandom (and some are underrated as hell, but understandable bc they’re like, victims) for doing something a normal human would do in a stressful/intense situation, even if it’s morally wrong, so yeah i do get why ppl hate them but i personally love how realistic they are for that. Idk who your problematic fave(s) is/are but you’re so right they’re the best

There wasn't any one thing in particular that got me going, just a long history of my favorite characters getting dunked on that inspired me to finally write out my gripes. It's not just in one fandom either, I tend to be drawn to complicated characters and especially those who go through a major character arc that involves redemption, atonement, etc.
Black and white thinking/judgment is a problem hardly restricted to fandom and fiction, of course, but it's funny how uncomfortable certain circles get about "gray" characters and storylines.
For instance, one glance at my blog (cough) will tell you my "problematic" AA fave is Godot, a character somehow even more controversial and maligned in the fandom than multiple serial killers. And I mean, we've got three other prosecutors in this series who definitely and canonically got innocent people convicted/potentially executed for years, and one of them is easily the most popular character (hint: it's Edgeworth.) But you use one fundamentally decent guy as a tragic dark mirror of your protagonist to explore the concepts of toxic grief and the toll that denial and loneliness take on someone in a series all about the power of truth and friendship, and he's somehow painted as more despicable than Manfred von goddamn Karma.
I just think it's funny, that's all! (and also that characters that make you think and ponder and argue are the best ones!!)
