I can't remember where I read it but someone was talking about how Black people from HBCUs can end up being even more pro establishment than Black students who went to PWIs and the argument they laid out made sense. HBCUs in the beginning (and still?) Had curriculums that were like. Very much in support of the status quo but with the veneer of progressivism. And as someone who went to a PWI....that place WILL radicalize you as a minority student. And my PWI is quite liberal. And this is less about HBCUs now and more about the PWIs but there's a certain way you're just hyper of being probably one of the only Black people in any given class, any given group, any given building, even. All academic institutions but PWIs especially have this burning undercurrent of hostility that BREATHES down your neck as a Black student and you can tell as much as they make noise about celebrating Black students they truly do not give a shit about Black students because there was always SOMETHING going on. While the entire school was hyperfocusing on ONE Black man who'd graduatedddd idk. Decades ago? And had since died. And whom they never spoke about outside of February. The sub school that I was in pointedly ignored BHM even after they'd had repeated scandals re Anti Blackness among the students. Clowns.

I'm tired of horror movies

So, the other day i saw a white girl with these wicca pins on her backpack. Now, that isn't bad. But she had veves too. And I reminded that because I'm watching a crappy horror movie and they used voodoo. Ofc those assholes they used voodoo.

Anyway, the movie tried to imitate a whole fucking ritual and while I was watching, all I could think of was "ooh the consequences, the consequences". There were veves and incantations.

I usually hate horror movies because you can clearly see that their research was poor. Yeah, I get that it's a fucking movie but hey, maybe don't use shit that you don't really understand?

It feels like that time a friend asked me if love spells work because they saw a "spell" on tiktok. Yes, yes they work but not the way you'd think they do. At this point this is my most common answer:

Besides, portraying these practices (voodoo, santería, palo santo, etc.) as evil is, um, racist. The Satanist stereotype also gets on my nerves, however I can understand that one (since most people come from a catholic background, horror artists are no exception). I find it hilarious that my job at the movie theatre can have no working ice machine, no AC in 100 degree weather, two broken fridges, no fresh fruit, no hot water, a leaking ceiling, managers who never answer the walkie or help during rushes when I’m the only bartender, mold and fruit flies, but the absolute last straw was them tearing the Downton Abbey standee with Hugh Dancy that I claimed months ago down and throwing it in the compactor.
