im so jealous of people who have a comic store near them and can just go pick up new idw sonic issues the day they come out and pick their favorite out of all the covers and stuff the only physical copies of idw sonic i can ever find in person are the volumes that collect 4 issues into one book
#i think the only physical copy of an individual idw sonic issue i have is free comic book day 2022#which i only managed to get because i was away from home at the time#i guess i could always look online for physical copies but like.#is it really worth having to deal with resellers older issues being overpriced#paying for shipping thats just as if not more expensive than the issue itself trying to track down specific covers etc

The first event I went to with GENDER QUEER was in NYC in 2019 at the Javits Center.
So many of the people who came to my signing were librarians, and so many of them said the same thing: "I know exactly who I want to give this to!"
Maia: "Thank you for helping readers find my book!"
While working on the book, I was genuinely unsure if anyone outside of my family and close friends would read it. But the early support of librarians and two American Library Association awards helped sell two print runs in first year.
Since then, GENDER QUEER been published in 8 languages, with more on the way: Spanish, Czech, Polish, French, Italian, Norwegian, Portugese and Dutch.
It has also been the most banned book in the United States for the past two years.
The American Library Association has tracked an astronomical increase in book challenges over the past few years. Most of these challenges are to books with diverse characters and LGBTQ themes. These challenges are coming unevenly across the US, in a pattern that mirrors the legislative attacks on LGBTQ people.
The Brooklyn Public Library offered free eCards to anyone in the US aged 13-21, in an effort to make banned books more available to young readers. A teacher in Norman, Oklahoma gave her students the QR code for the free eCard and lost her job. Summer Boismeir is now working for the Brooklyn Public Library.
Hoopla and Libby/Overdrive, apps used to access digital library books, are now banned in Mississippi to anyone under 18. Some libraries won’t allow anyone under 18 to get any kind of library card without parental permission.
When librarians in Jamestown, Michigan refused to remove GENDER QUEER and several other books, the citizens of the town voted down the library’s funding in the fall 2022 election. Without funding, the library is due to close in mid-2024.
My first event since covid hit was the American Library Association conference in June 2022 in Washington, DC. Once again, the librarians in my signing line all had similar stories for me: “Your book was challenged in our district"
"It was returned to the shelf!"
"It was removed from the shelf..."
"It was moved to the adult section."
Over and over I said: "Thank you. Thank you for working so hard to keep my book in your library. I’m sorry you had to defend it, but thank you for trying, even if it didn't work."
We are at a crossroads of freedom of speech and censorship. The future of libraries, both publicly funded and in schools, are at stake. This is massively impacting the daily lives of librarians, teachers, students, booksellers, and authors around the country. In May 2023, I read an article from the Washington Post analyzing nearly 1000 of the book challenges from the 2021-2022 school year. I was literally on route to a festival to talk about book bans when I read a startling statistic.
60% of the 1000 book challenges were submitted by just 11 people. One man alone was responsible for 92 challenges. These 11 people seem to have made submitting copy-cat book challenges their full-time hobby and their opinions are having an outsized ripple effect across the nation.
WE NEED TO MAKE THE VOICES SUPPORTING DIVERSE BOOKS AND OPPOSING BOOK BANS EVEN LOUDER.
If you are able too, show up for your library and school board meetings when book challenges are debated. Send supportive comments and emails about the Pride book display and Drag Queen story hours. If you see a display you like– for Banned Book Week, AAPI Month, Black History Month, Disability Awareness Month, Jewish holidays, Trans Day of Remembrance– compliment a librarian! Make sure they feel the love stronger than the hate <3

My Free Comic Book Day 2022 Experience
Free Comic Book Day is usually held every First Saturday of May, but for this year, my local bookstore, Fully Booked is doing this event again at this Last Saturday of June. This time, it's gonna be held both in-person and online sale. Two of their largest stores requires an online registration to receive two comics each, while other selected stores will have one comic per person without register. Also, all of the comics are distributed RANDOMLY from 10:00 AM to 12:00 NN.
I told my best friend, Miggy about this announcement that they're having FCBD again in stores after two years, so we have to plan something when we go out on that day. One of the comics we want to get is this Dog Man & Friends Teaser Comic which has excerpts from Dog Man, Cat Kid Comic Club and Captain Underpants. We are both fans of his stories and illustrations, and we were so happy to see that comic on the list to be given away. I had mentioned this comic on my previous post.
On that exciting day, I was all prepared since 5:30 AM when Miggy texted me some last-minute stuff before we go outside like bringing an extra tote bag. My mom is joining with me all along, then we left the house at 8:35 AM to commute from my home to SM City Grand Central.
When I arrived there, the mall is still closed but I haven't seen any people falling in line for free comics. I had to stay inside the supermarket (the first store to be open an hour before the rest of the entire mall at 10:00 AM). As the mall opens, I rushed through the bookstore when a staff told me that I was the first person in this branch to arrive, so he gave me Naruto & Archie (not pictured) comics. They don't have some Pilkey comics there. Anyway, I'm not a fan of Naruto but let's see if I like its storyline.
He also noticed that I'm in a Dog Man-inspired outfit and asked me on the upcoming release. Plus points for being an avid Dav Pilkey fan.
The second bookstore I'm going is Trinoma, where surprisingly, I spotted a Dav Pilkey comic being included in their store! The staff gave us this and a Zelda comic and left the area, and I texted Miggy if he already got that Pilkey comic. He sent me a picture of what he got from the Gateway branch, which I'm gonna show you at the end.
Both of us are in a hurry to get free comics in various stores within two hours, and what I'm heading on my final stop will be at SM City North Edsa. They have two Pokemon comics that I was gonna get both, but my mom had to pick that Wonder Woman comic instead. I saw this book already but the one I got was an excerpt and I even knew that I attended a virtual event with Shannon Hale last year.
I am not tired, but I visited all three bookstores within an hour! Some of the good comics I bought were based from my interests or trying them from recommendations. One branch (Bonifacio High Street) was a blockbuster because the online registration is full, while other stores are continuing FCBD the whole day due to public demand and still availability of free comics.
After all of that waiting, Miggy and I finally got this Dav Pilkey Comic Sampler! Here's what he got from one branch:
This was my first time attending FCBD because of Dav Pilkey's comic to be included in the list and my best friend influencing me to the event, but hopefully next year we could do this again for free comics.
Thank you to Fully Booked for reuniting geek fans to this physical event again, it is a big success for them to revise this tradition in this bookstore and I'm looking forward for more.

[12 May 2022] hi hi!! i just wanted to say that i really enjoyed the demo and that unfortunately for me ren lives in my head rent-free because he is RIGHT up my alley in terms of design (pastels + comfy clothes). though i did have one question, does ren actually like to read? i know he was at the library for us, but i'm curious if he has some genres books he actually likes!

Ren has definitely read a lot of manga and comic books when he was younger (and probably still does to this day), but I don't think he'd actively pick out books just for the sake of reading them. He'd much rather spend his time watching you from afar, and he can't really do that with a book about "Corland Bay's local flora" blocking his vision, y'know?
If YOU have an interest in books, however, then give Ren some recommendations and watch as he spends the next hour paying express shipping for a kindle so he can read it himself lol

reading roundup: May 2024
you guyssssss you guys you guys you guys I've been reading so much this month :)
sometimes my brain gets the itch to just DEVOUR books and it's really been on me, probably thanks to the burst of energy + free time that comes with the semester ending and summer getting started! the days are longer, the last of my season depression has been kicked to the curb, and I can spend hours reading on the porch every evening. the ideal!
right now, as the month ends, I'm feeling a particular hankering towards nonfiction and juicy new summer novels; I reblogged a Lit Hub roundup of new books the other day that got my brain buzzinggggg with excitement for the coming months. we'll see if that ends up manifesting in the June roundup, but for now, here's what kept me busy in May:
Paris Daillencourt is About to Crumble (Alexis Hall, 2022) - this month I read two romance novels picked by my beautiful patreonites; I did a compare/contrast between the two over on Patreon and I'll leave the majority of my thoughts there, but suffice to say that I am not a fan of Paris. definitely the weakest of the three Alexis Hall novels, and a real disappointment since I found the other two delightful. the story is straightforward enough and has some potential for sure, but Paris as a protagonist is a sodden mess who I found just insufferable. thumbs down from me, gang.
Chef's Kiss (TJ Alexander, 2022) - hi, it's the other romance novel. this one is a lot goofier than Paris Daillencourt, which is fitting since it's BA Test Kitchen rpf starring a bisexual Claire Saffitz and a nonbinary Brad Leone. it's frustrating because the story is definitely stronger than the one in Paris but the romance is piteously undercooked, although I was at least fine with the protag and her love interest getting together - they were boring but unobjectionable, unlike Paris and his love interest who I really thought would have been better off as friends. now that I'm thinking about it, you might get a perfect queer cooking show romance novel if you somehow mashed the two of them together. they're both, like, so close to working, but ultimately fall flat.
Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 4-6 (Ryoko Kui, 2018) - I don't even know what to say except that I'm still loving everything about Dungeon Meshi. the craft and thought that Kui puts into every facet of the world, from the big picture politics between fantasy races to the individual thoughts and feelings of each character, shows so much love for the world without ever being overbearing; it never feels like exposition is being hammered down my throat so much as little details are being tastefully arranged to be enjoyed at whatever speed and to whatever extent the reader likes. the world is getting bigger with each chapter and I'm looking forward to exploring more, especially now that Falin's hottie monster form and that good good catgirl have entered the chat.
Earthdivers Vol. 2: Ice Age (Stephen Graham Jones, Riccardo Burchielli, Patricio Depeche, Emily Schnall, Joana Lafuente, 2024) - once again I've done the worst thing that you can do as a comics fan, which is get invested in a series that's just starting out and is still releasing individual issues. the third trade paperback won't be out until December, so I guess I'm either going to have to go on hiatus with Earthdivers or start chasing down new releases on comic pirating sites, which feels shitty - that's how I read Batman comics that are the same age as me, not new stuff from authors I actually want to support! but Earthdivers might just be worth it. the second installment takes us to a wildly different setting than the first, Columbus-killing collection, dropping fearsome mother Tawny in a prehistoric North America. but while the setting changes, the series is still grappling with the question of what its protagonists are willing to sacrifice and who they're willing to become to change the past and save the world. we're starting to see bigger hints about how much history can be altered and catching some clues about the series' antagonist (???); I gotta know what happens next.
Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder (Caroline Fraser, 2017) - here it is, the book that got nonfic so powerfully on the brain! this is a riveting history whether you grew up on Little House on the Prairie or not (I didn't), tracking Laura Ingalls Wilder from an impoverished girl constantly imperiled by life on the prairie to a beloved icon of American propaganda. for me, personally, this hefty book really picks up when it gets to the endlessly complicated and frequently nasty relationship that Wilder had with her daughter when said daughter was grown; Rose Wilder Lane is a FASCINATING figure in her own right and I'm kind of obsessed with what a shithead grifter girlboss she was. fascinating stuff all around.
The Brides of High Hill (Nghi Vo, 2024) - Vo's series of Singing Hills novellas has always woven from one genre to another, exploring new types of stories just as our protagonist, the cleric Chih, explores new lands. this installation takes us straight into a gothic horror that pulls out all the stops: an isolated manor, an enigmatic madman roaming the grounds, the strangling snares of social conventions, and a blushing bride who isn't exactly what she seems. I read it in one sitting, it's delicious.
Superfreaks: Kink, Pleasure, and the Pursuit of Happiness (Arielle Greenberg, 2023) - a poppin' primer for anybody who wants to learn more about the world of kink and what the fuck is going on out there. at one point I did catch myself thinking that I was a little underwhelmed and that Greenberg wasn't really putting forth anything that radical, but then I realized that speaking extremely candidly about and validating interest in basically any kink or fetish imaginable, and yes I do mean straight up any of them, is actually A Lot for many people to handle. so, yeah, good book, check it out for a friendly and enthusiastic intro to the wide world of kink.
Sex Criminals Vol. 2: Two Worlds, One Cop (Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, 2015) - the first volume of Sex Criminals left me feeling a little meh, but I decided to keep going because Matt Fraction's Hawkeye run was lifechanging and I know this series is pretty widely acclaimed, so I want to see where we're going with this. (plus it's free via the library, so what do I have to lose?) this volume really sold me on the series and particularly on Jon, who I was pretty lukewarm on initially. he really stole the spotlight in this one, and I like the way that the story is ratcheting up the stakes.
The Stone Sky (N.K. Jemisin, 2017) - GOOOOOOOOOD what a book! what a trilogy! in a series shaped by empires and natural disasters, the story ultimately ends with a quit confrontation of clashing ideologies, a young daughter determined to end the world and a mother equally determined that one of her children should live. and that shit hurts! I read the series a couple of times when I was younger but I was never before able to fully appreciate the work Jemisin does in crafting Essun and Nassun, showing us the way cruelty and fear have shaped both of them into the people they ultimately are and the choices they make. absolutely masterful, a legend.
From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World in Search of the Good Death (Caitlin Doughty, 2017) - this was another reread, and while N.K. Jemisin was blowing my mind, Caitlin Doughty was giving me a warm hug. I don't know what to tell you, reading about the ways that people all over the world care for their dead and take comfort in their memories makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. death can be really beautiful and comforting, if you're not a coward.
The Big Reveal: An Illustrated Manifesto of Drag (Sasha Velour, 2023) - listen, I'm not really a Drag Race girlie. I first heard about this book when Velour was a guest on Nicole Byers' podcast, and while I was very charmed by her I was not expecting to be blown away by her book. it's just a little cash-in for a Ru girl, right? all she needs to do is slap together some cool pictures of her in drag and a few platitudes about being yourself and boom bang, that's a book. but readers, I owe Sasha Velour an apology: this book was so much cooler and smarter than it needed to be! Velour brings an impressive eye to forces of colonialism and capitalism that shape art and conceptions of queerness, and keeps this framework firmly in place while keeping the tone of the book bubbly and lighthearted. she also goes out of her way to spotlight a huge variety of drag performers and gender nonconforming figures throughout history, celebrating all the different means of expression that make up the tapestry of contemporary queerness. a great read, and one that I've already shelled out for. a friend and I are working on a documentary exploring the nuances of queer style, and I know I'm gonna want to pull heavily from Velour's thoughts and the history she's curated.

Hi tumblr! I figured I would reintroduce myself here, since I have decided tumblr is simply my favorite place to share online *still* to this day.
My name is Odera and I am a painter and illustrator!
The main places you can find me are here, my side blog @burritobowlofthepelvis, my website, and @ oderaigbokwe on IG.
I'm physically located on the unceded ancestral territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations (aka known as Vancouver Canada).
Alot of my work centers the magic of the African diaspora and the Black Queer Imagination. The foundational years of my career were complimentary to Black speculative works, Afrofuturism, and Fantasy as a gateway to healing. This has since grown to explore the spirit based, ancestral work of the diaspora, and most recently I have been combining it all and trying to find that magic in the physical, daily, embodied things.
My side blog is @burritobowlofthepelvis which I am slowly but surely reorganizing. This blog is filled with reblogs for inspiration, potential reference images, more casual glimpses of my life, selfies, and outfits of the day. (Some of the reblogs are NSFW, so minors DNI there). Ultimately I am trying to use that blog as a combination journal/resource for my sketchbook.
Below are some of my favorite paintings and illustrations over the years that give an idea of the kinds of things I am exploring or have done throughout my career.

This painting is the centerpiece of my series of Tarot/Oracle/Afrodiasporic Divination paintings. The series is slowly but surely coming together, and once I get to the minor arcana I am excited to make some stylistic shifts that not only match the messaging but are also much faster to make.
Selections from my solo exhibition 'New Yam Festival'. These paintings are all big, juicy, vibrant, improvisational, and embody the playfulness, pleasure, and joy of the Black Queer imagination! Up until that point I was working mostly at a smaller scale (anywhere from 8x10 to 20x30 inches). So it was fun to size up to 6-8 feet for each of these!
Above are some of my favorite commercial illustrations for book covers and comics. Covers are their own particular fun design challenge, but of all the illustration assignments they can feel the most fulfilling to me.
And something classic from the archive: Odera Redesigns the cast of Sailor Moon.
I can't believe most of those were created almost 10 years ago. But that's where we are, and it feels good to still want to use this platform despite how much the world is changing.
