“Elsa's eyes open wide when she sees him, and then she looks at Alf's flat. At the radio. Because there's no coincidence in fairy tales. And there's a Russian playwright who once said that if there's a pistol hanging on the wall in the first act, it has to be fired before the last act is over. Elsa knows that. And those who can't understand by now how Elsa understands things like that just haven't been paying attention. So Elsa understands that the whole thing with the radio and the accident on the highway must have something to do with the fairy tale they're in.” - My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry, pg. 323
Re-reading My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She’s Sorry and I did not remember how meta this was for Fredrik Backman’s storytelling in general or how a character literally brings up and then subverts the Chekhov’s gun principle. This is maybe particularly vindicating for me and the essay about Chekhov’s gun in The Winners that I haven’t written (which mostly sums up to the first gun you see seems to already serve its narrative purpose up until it’s the one fired last).

hi c what are the most absolutely readable books you've read
recency bias notwithstanding, here you go —
Beartown trilogy by Fredrik Backman: easily one of the best things I've read; about an ice hockey town and how the sport is both toxic and redeeming for the town; he does people beautifully and I have cried multiple times on public transport while reading this
Figuring by Maria Popova: it looks at how creativity is a collective human project and how the best things/the truth about the world is almost always uncovered when people encounter other people and ideas. The book has galaxy brain energy and it made me feel all fuzzy and soft about the human project after reading it <3
Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe: about the IRA and the Troubles in Northern Ireland and its bearing on politics now; how violence of this sort lives on in societies and cultures long after it has ended; how cultures deal with (or fail to) morally dubious histories. There's just so much to think about here!
Appliance by J. O. Morgan: a short dystopian novella about this machine that is basically teleporter. The book follows how its growth and occupation of the society is basically inevitable; makes really chilling and smart observations on authenticity and scientific progress along the way
The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen: follows the Lambert family at the end of the 1990s and through them, about everything up, socially and economically, with American culture then. Really well written and one of Franzen's best
The Room on the Roof by Ruskin Bond: a coming-of-age story he wrote when he was 17; somewhat autobiographical and captures his life between England and India as a child and teenager among friends and family
There but for the by Ali Smith: about the chaos that develops around a family and particularly a man when said man goes into one of the rooms at a dinner party and locks himself in it; he becomes a sort of lightning rod for a lot of politics and rhetoric, and the book shows this in really witty ways. There's great wordplay and endless puns and you'll have fun while reading it
Our Bodies, Their Battlefield by Christina Lamb: about what war does to women, and more specifically about how rape is and should be tried as a war crime; it's part journalism and in part an exploration of how we can make things better on this front. Very harrowing but very very good
I will also direct you here for some comfort books, and here for some more fiction i really like

Eriksson on the rainbow bandage: "Will do everything in my power"
Playing with a rainbow armband could be banned by Fifa during this summer's World Cup.
Magdalena Eriksson will do everything she can to allow it.
- Then we'll see what it leads to, she says.
The German national team sent a request to Fifa to use the rainbow armband during the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer.
The request was denied by Fifa, the German national team manager has told Bild.
Fifa themselves deny, and say that a decision on whether or not the rainbow armband has been made has not been made.
The Swedish national team's Magdalena Eriksson will not lie flat if Fifa chooses to ban the use of the rainbow bandage.
- There has been no clear announcement, but if the decision is made, I know that as a person I will push as far as I can and do everything in my power for it to be allowed. That's what I know, then we'll see what it leads to, says Magdalena Eriksson.
"It was awesome"
Earlier this year, it began to be reported that "Visit Saudi", Saudi Arabia's tourism ambassador, would become a sponsor of the championship.
Many reacted to it and wanted it stopped, including the Australian and New Zealand Football Associations. And Fifa listened.
Magdalena Eriksson wants to use the same methods in the case of a binding ban.
- It was cool to see how voices were raised about the potential Saudi sponsorship, enough voices were raised and it changed. So we have power and we must use and utilize that power.
Before Friday's match against Denmark, the national team will be visited by the newly appointed chairman of the Swedish Football Association, Fredrik Reinfeldt.
Then the topic of conversation, the rainbow bandage, is planned to be brought up.
Eriksson wants to convey to Reinfeldt that they should fight for the bond.
- We must push it all the way in as far as we can, and we must not settle.
- But first of all we have to meet him, I haven't even greeted him. So we will meet and talk and find a strategy to work together.

Gåsmamman season 5
Bet you didn't see this one coming.
The season opens up with Nina on a morning run, micking the opening season to the very first episode where Sonja was on a run. It's a nice touch.
We soon find out that she lives with Zac and that Sinus lives with them and is just about to turn 18. It's been three years and little Fredrik is a toddler now.
We are then introduced to Gustav who hasn't cut his hair since Sonja died. He has a questionable man bun and a questionable tattoo. And hangs out at a even more questionable gym as the police raid it not even 10 minutes in. Gustav makes a run for it but is caught and brought to the police station. We soon find out that Gustav works undercover with Emil and their main mission is to capture the major who he believes killed Sonja and is the sole reason why he's infiltrating in the first place. Oh boy. But the gym he infiltrates has close connections to the major as the majors drugs are found there. Obviously Gustav has a new girlfriend but also a daughter named Magda. He's been away from them duing his infiltration thing but is quickly reunited.
Tumblr media
Moving on to Oslo where Sonja and Lukas work together as the major. Lukas pretends to be the major and Sonja is the real major. Their "business" partners are in trouble because of a delivery of cocain. We are introduced to Robert Kronstedt who is responsible for the distribution of cocain in Sweden. The major is not happy and their former business partners discover Lukas microphone and the secret is out. It all goes to hell and Sonja ends up ramming their car which kills them and an innocent family that gets crushed by their falling car.
Oh and Sonja has a wig!
We get more information about Roland Kroonstedt who is married to Vera. Roland gets a call from Tony (the big guy from the gym) so there's definitely a connection there. To make things more messy Emil picks him up and threatens him into work for him to capture the major. Turns out Robert has alot of shady stuff going on.
Sonja is in shock after killing innocent people and she wants to quit. She ends up at a bar and we realise just how messed up she is. She gets drunk and hooks up with a guy. We really understand that she's in a bad place. Her and Lukas start making plans to leave the business but it won't be easy. As usual Sonja asks too much of Lukas. They want to offer Mr Gerafi to take over the business in exhange for new identities. We learn thst there is a server in Stockholm were the major has all the information there is. And the first mission for Sonja and Lukas is to get the server. Obviously Robert gets to know and informs Emil who plans an operation to finally catch the major. He obviously has no idea that the major is Sonja.
Tumblr media
There's a family dinner with the ek siblings plus Emil. It's a nice evening until Klara shows up. We learn that Klara is not dating Roland Östling (brother to Henrik Östling that played a huge part in season 2 and 3 and was the main reason everything went so bad) Roland is also a bit of shady man but that's what Klara likes I guess. Nina in particular is angry with Klara for betraying Sonja. She's still sassy, Klara.
The first episode nicely sets up the story and reintroduces us to everyone and what everyone is up to. Sonja and Lukas with the server and getting out, Emil and Gustav trying to get the major arrested and Linus who has some shady business of his own going on. We also learn that Klara knew all along that Sonja is alive but has kept it a secret and has kept Sonja updated. It also ends with a huge cliffhanger when Klara gets kidnapped and Lukas fails to get the server aswell as Emil and Gustav failing to catch him.
Tumblr media
Episode 2 picks up with Nina running into Sonja and mother and daughter reuniting. After everything they have been through it's so nice to see them like this. Their reunion is perfect. Nina is shocked but quickly comes to terms with it and it feels like their bond is stronger now because Nina is also a mother now.
Klara is still kidnapped and Nina and Sonja start a plan to get her back.
Back at EcoVera Roland and his partner in crime try to get into the server. They soon find out that they need the key to decrypt the server and acess the information.
Lukas and Sonja have even more trouble as they've lost the server they were supposed to deliver to Gerafi. They also realise Robert is a snitch.
Linus are still together with Tanja but she's in a place for young offenders having getting caught dealing. We also learn that Linus is helping her pay of her debt by dealing himself but he's in trouble. And he proposes to her despite lying to his family about them not being together anymore.
Tumblr media
Over all these two first episodes work well to introduce the new plot. All characters have something going on and they all tie together very nicely.
Gustav finds out Linus is up to no good and discovers thst Linus has his own weed farm in a trailer. He burns it down which turns out to have devastating consequences for everyone.
The season moves quickly and the six episodes are jam packed. For instance Robert is killed off in the beginning of ep 2. Yet it doesn't feel rushed in my opinion and I actually really like it. Despite it being quite different from the former seasons in ways that are hard to explain.
We really get a sense on what these three years have done to all the characters. Gustav is blind in his need to get revenge for Sonja's death and he's desperate. He's also pretty distant from his family. Linus is dealing drugs and keeping secrets. Sonja is a mess and Lukas is left picking up the pieces as usual. As I said all storylines are connected and I really like that.
Tumblr media
Klaras kidnapping is my least favourite plot this season but we get to see Barry and Nina working together and it's used to catalyst other storylines. I just think something else could have been used for that and since i don't care about Klara that much the kidnapping scenes feel too long and dragged out.
I'm much more interested in the other storylines. I like that Barry is dragged into it all and Vera hired him to kill the major but he's also helping Nina with Klara.
I also find it a bit funny that Gustav has yet another girlfriend and while it makes me roll my eyes it clearly shows how all the shit he's been through has affected him. He clearly has issues and he also distances himself from people close to him. Just like in season 4. He's trying to hide from his real feelings, just like in season 4.
I like how we see that his and Linus relationship is still in a bad place. It's a nice continuation and even if I dislike Gustav for what he does to Linus in season 5 it makes sense. They are no longer what they used to be.
Tumblr media
The rest of the episodes continue on what the first two built. Each episode feels well paced and almost everyone ends on a cliffhanger. But like I said the season feels so different from the others. I can't even tell what it is.
Slowly but surely each character gets more and more nestled up in trouble and their storylines connect more and more.
Sonja has to get back the server and Linus get caught up in even more of a mess when Gustav lights the trailer on fire. It's ironic how Gustav essentially fucks everything up. He tries to help Linus then but it's already too late.
Nina is trying to get Klara back and as I said gets some help from Barry. In the end though she ends up doing almost everything by herself like the bad ass she is.
The main storyline is of course getting back the server and unknowingly it leads Sonja back to all her kids. First Nina then Gustav and then Linus.
I love how Sonja, Barry and Gustav reunite and 2 minutes later they are forced to work like a team to get away from Tony. Which they fail at.
The container episode does a great job exploring Sonja's and Gustav's relationship. I can't blame Gustav at all for despising her. From season one she's treated him like her partner in crime and been very neglectful and dismissive of her children's feelings and traumas. And he's obviously not delt with if and it's turned into resentment. It's especially effectful when he realises she's infact the person he's spent all that time trying to catch. In addition she's been alive this whole time. I understand him but he also pisses me off alot this season with his attitude.
Tumblr media
Nina also gets more and more annoyed because Sonja has to do other things than finding Klara and like I said she ends up doing it all by herself. It's also her and Zac that saves Gustav, Barry and Sonja from the container.
Meanwhile Linus bless his soul is trying to help Tanja and eventually ends up at that poker tournament where Sonja is also at along with Barry. We all know what happens. Sonja and Barry gets the server and the neckless and Linus points a gun at his mother without realising it. Bless his soul.
Again it's ironic how Gustav is the reason why Linus is there in the first place and then Linus ends up shooting at him and Magda. Poor Linus though getting super traumatised by it. I would love to see Linus mental health get adressed more.
Tumblr media
Speaking of which I absolutely hate of this storyline comes to happen. It's so stupid. Tove wants a concussed Gustav to take care of a baby so she can sleep. Gustav takes Magda with him and when he spots the robbers he follows them with Magda in the car. And then Linus shoots at them (with a gun from Zac's safe) its just so stupid.
This is what makes Gustav decide to go against his family. Before he's sort of protected them even if he hates Sonja. But when he figures out what Linus did he gets him arrested. I understand but it pisses me off that it's his fault and that there's nothing left of their old relationship. Instead of talking to Linus and making an effort Gustav is obviously too caught up in his own problems. He simply can't. So instead they end up with Gustav betraying him and Linus being arrested
Klara is killed by Roland after she figures out he's behind her kidnapping as some sort of revenge for Henrik?
It all really falls apart for everyone in the last couple of episodes. Nina ends up a murderer, Sonja never gets to escape after being this close and Linus is arrested. The whole plan with getting the server to the Gerafi also goes to hell.
It can only get worse from here. I get super anxious thinking about season 6. What will happen to Linus? Will Gustav betray his family again? How will Nina cope? Who will die?
Over all I like season 5 it's a bit short but it's easy to follow and it feels like there are less side characters to keep track of. Probably because all storylines are connected.
This season really made me love Nina. She's an amazing character.
I can't wait for season 6.

Part 2/???
Another of the AU I’m thinking so far. Now with some of the new cadets.
Tumblr media
A new cadet to the OSF. Her power is photokinesis. The top graduate of the 567th class, Katarina is ready to begin her life as an OSF member. She is professional in all sense. While she isn’t insubordinate, she does have some disdain of how casual her superiors can come off. But she proves herself to have a strong sense of leadership and takes advantages of times she can call shots within her platoon. She is placed under Emil’s platoon and does fine with that.
Before Katarina was her mother, Petra, that had originally been under the Bryström family. She had dreams to join OSF like others in her family did. However there was a problem. She didn’t have abilities. And when it didn’t look like she would, her relationship with her parents started to deteriorate. She found a solace with her classmate, Fredrik, who insisted that it was late and even if she didn’t have powers, she could still do for the people like she wished. Petra worked on her own and even with her parents wanting her to enter experimentation, she refused insisting that she can get by on her own.
Of course because of fundamental clause of OSF, she couldn’t join them without powers so she NDF where she served with Fredrik. While they were doing defense for an incorrect Other forecast, Petra did awaken a power and despite this, they were going to stay in NDF but because of her and Fredrik’s power being demonstrated, they were scouted as Adults, people that had their powers awakened later.
This was something Katarina was intimately knowledgeable about and served as a lesson of being fair to all. Regardless of if they were volunteer or scouted. If they had psionics or not. She had entered with the hopes to eventually change the relationship with OSF and NDF to make a better security for the people. Since they, ultimately, were who both organizations were for. Simply separated by those distinctions. It’s quite ambitious...and dangerous. Which is why Emil had immediately took a bid for her to be under platoon. He didn’t want her to get put into anything unsavory such as personality rehabilitation. And no, he doesn’t know of their relation. She on the other hand does and had suspicions in his interest in her.
Although she has her hands full since she also is keeping an eye on her cousin, Eira, who is in the same class as her. (They are same class despite Kat being older because Kat was a volunteer, who had to wait longer, and Eira was scouted at a younger age because she had such a strong power.) However she isn’t too excited since Eira ended up in Crowe’s platoon and she’s trying to get one of them transferred.
Her ability of photokinesis is the generation and manipulation of light. This is mainly used for her to create constructs that aid in her battle and being able to travel, in a sense, as fast as light. Not truly because it puts a lot of stress on her brain but in bursts, it’s fine. For anyone using her ability through SAS, this extends to making constructs of the user’s weapon to strike simultaneously with them. With further bonds with Katarina, this can turn into also making light copies of themselves to attack or fake out enemies.
Tumblr media
Also a new cadet to the OSF. His ability is regeneration. He is in the same class as Katarina although they have never met until passing into cadet status since he apparently was scouted. He does have a sunny disposition, which combined with Eira makes it seem like such a bright class. However he can also be quite reckless, which is usually attributed to his ability. As for it, he thinks it’s a bit of a misnomer since it’s not much different from healing and what his is primarily used for. When used in the SAS, the user recovers health while it is active and negates damage (due to regeneration being faster than injury). He says it’s pretty boring compared to other SAS abilities he’s seen.
Aspis is just the latest of identity for him. The reality is that Aspis has been through the process of joining platoons many times. This is because of an incident. When he first joined OSF, he has been a volunteer cadet that had hoped to help make his home in Seiran more peaceful. A few years in and there was an attack that was presumed to have killed him with a partial devouring of his brain from Others. So imagine the shock of the coroner to hear a voice from one of their doors. This was the incident to find that Aspis’ ability wasn’t a simple healing but full regeneration. And there were those that wanted to test with this.
Unbeknownst to him at the time, this was to do with the Other weapon project. Since it gave a ‘consistent’ brain to their others. But killing to obtain a brain over and over was considered cruel and, more importantly to the scientists, less effective. They found their best results from time that Aspis had to develop for practical combat and have experience and the like. So it became he joins a platoon, stays for a while and eventually a mission goes awry and he ends up awake on a slab.
Because of how the anti-aging drugs work on him, Aspis maintains a rather youthful appearance despite how may times he’s been through this song and dance. He had hoped for a long while that his power would start fizzling out and that it would no longer be viable. But after enough of these runs, he has realized it’s possible his power in itself might not make it possible for it fizzle out. And so he had turned to wanting to retire but hadn’t been allowed to with initially threats towards his family and when they were gone, he really had no place to go. Despite it all, Aspis doesn’t appear especially bitter because he went down doing what he had set off to do when he was a cadet the first time.
However it is arguable that his sanity is not intact. Which also lends to his reckless behavior. But Aspis would claim he’s perfectly sane, that his ability simply proves that he’ll survive the stuff that would take out his companions. And that’s what he cares about. Despite all that happened, what bums him out more often is how much he’s lost comrades, who are now the only ones he can think of as family, and that he would want them to live long lives too. Even when he no longer could be in their service.

Taking on the Universe, Chapter Two
Chapter Two: Arcturus Station
Tumblr media
Summary: To Natasha Shepard, Arcturus Station was a stark reminder of everything she'd lost; not the bright hub of interstellar politics everyone else viewed it as. Finally forced to return after months of careful avoidance, she comes face to face with the living reminder of the ghosts of her past. For seven years she's been trying to outrun them, but she can't run forever.
CW/TW: Mention of PTSD/Flashbacks of trauma
Preview of chapter below. AO3 Link: here.
Arcturus Station: the military and political headquarters of the Systems Alliance, home to 45,000 residents, and the absolute last place in the entire galaxy Natasha wanted to be. She’d put immense effort into avoiding this station, and one specific person on it. Of course, as a member of said military, it wasn’t possible for her to completely escape its haunted halls.
This time, she’d managed to stay away from Arcturus for a few months. But now she was back. Just like every other time she was forced to return, everything she’d repressed for the past seven years bubbled to the surface, threatening to overwhelm her as she made her way through the familiar territory of the barracks. Just walking through these halls made her heart ache, longing for a simpler time. Memories she tried so hard to keep at bay pressed against the wall she’d erected to keep them hidden. There was just too much history here.
As a child, she’d walked these same halls, clinging to the hand of whichever parent was about to leave on their next tour of duty without her. There had been several times she’d left with Hannah, spending months at a time stationed on ships. Other instances left her with her father, Kristofer, who was sometimes sent to colonies further out in Alliance-controlled space. Having both of her parents commissioned as officers meant that she’d known what all military children grow up knowing; there’s a considerable amount of moving around involved, which can make life as an only child quite lonely.
The majority of her childhood years, however, had been spent aboard this station, with Kris. He had been the highest-ranking engineer in the Alliance, stationed at their capital as he worked to improve communications around the galaxy. Between both of her parents’ various postings over the years, Natasha had seen most of Alliance space by the time she was ten years old. It had been then, during one of Kris’ stays on Arcturus, she had met the friends she would bond with, and finally find a sense of belonging among her peers. In no time at all, Fredrik, Evelyn, Jeff, and Arthur had become some of the most important people in her life.

I mean, I think a lot about that “top 10 Holby characters” article that had the “standout moments” for every character on the list, and Henrik’s was... the abuse storyline. That really does sum up the way Henrik will be remembered.
Years of character development. Years of storylines to pick from - his depression, his return to Sweden (in an episode filmed on location!! How is sensationalist, exploitative nonsense like the abuse story considered more memorable than an episode actually filmed in Stockholm?) and seeing Maja again for the first time since he abandoned her, his mentorship of Arthur, his decision to finally meet his son, his increasingly strained relationship with said son that leads to Fredrik shooting up the hospital, his tragic romance with John, heck you could even pick him bonding with Oskar or his relationship with Russ - even if both those storylines were very much under-served compared to what they could have been.
And yet all anyone is ever going to remember him as is “the rape victim”. That’s it. They’ll remember him and they’ll think “wow, poor broken, weak, cowardly Henrik! Wasn’t it awful that he was abused as a child? And then the abuse turned him gay, how very sad! I’m so glad I’m not broken and dirty and tainted like him!”.

Fredrik Backman - The Winners
A lot of time has passed since the tragic events of Beartown. Maya Andersson and Benji Ovich have left the village to start a new life somewhere else, the rest of the inhabitants has found a way of either forgetting or ignoring. But now they are threatened by a storm and a fateful series of events brings people home, opens up old wounds and creates new ones. Beartown as its rival village of Hed will never be the same again, they all will have changed and one person’s life especially will be determined by the events of only a very short time.
I have read almost all novels by Fredrik Backman and yet, I am overwhelmed each time and even though I am all but prone to extreme emotion, I can’t help crying while reading his stories. From the first two books settled in the Swedish village of Beartown, I knew what to expect from “The Winners” and was somehow prepared, but nevertheless, the author managed to trigger something in me.
Maybe it is the characters who are the most normal people one can imagine, who have their good and caring sides as well as the others which would much rather be hidden. Maybe it is the setting in an unknown village somewhere in the forest which nobody has ever heard of. It is the maximum of normalcy that we encounter in this trilogy and that makes you feel at home and bond with the characters immediately.
Backman’s masterful foreshadowing gives a glimpse in what is to come, it only hints at the upcoming tragedies and thus raises suspense which keeps you reading on, unable to put the book aside. You know that something really dreadful, horrible is waiting at the end and yet, just like life goes on you continue until you reach that moment where you are hit with a hammer.
I am lacking the words to adequately convey what the novel did to me, to describe the experience of reading and after the last page, of leaving this wonderful story. Backman is an exceptional author and his Beartown series is an exceptional read.

heyy can you recommend me some books for light reading cuz i have so much to study now but i still want to read something for stress relief
hi! these are my favourites for light reading —
intimations by zadie smith: six essays written during early pandemic; it's a short swift take on things happening then, weirdly comforting now
rain in the mountains by ruskin bond: stories and essays about writing, living in the mountains and so on. also check his notes from a small room, which is more about writing; but also, just pick any ruskin bond really
the anthropocene reviewed by john green: essays from the podcast that are about being human at an individual and a larger communal level; really really well done
a man called ove by fredrik backman: about a really grumpy old man that follows him over the course of three weeks and really just builds a character portrait of him. this is light reading because it's wholesome and the sweetest thing really, but it is also not light (for me) because everytime i read backman i just obsessively let the books consume me. anxious people is also same.
good omens by neil gaiman, sir terry pratchett: this is one of the funniest and the most wholesome-est books i've read; follows an angel and a demon working together to stop the apocalypse; they both share one brain cell between them, and i love them for that; also check gaiman's coraline (be warned, it is creepy); and pratchett's small gods
the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by douglas adams: this is the first part, and i would totally recommend them all; it starts with the earth being demolished to make space for an intergalactic highway, only one human escapes, he hitches a ride on a spaceship nearby; utter chaos of a book (affectionate), also very funny
round ireland with a fridge by tony hawks: it's a travelogue, where hawks takes a trip around the perimeter of ireland with a small fridge after losing a bet; it's absurd and engaging, and wild that this really happened
shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafon: it's a very very cool literary mystery/thriller that follows daniel, who works in his father's bookshop and who discovers a book by an author no one seems to have heard of and around whom there are only rumours and more mysteries. he starts digging into the author and his work and, as happens with thrillers, it turns into a lot he doesn't expect
i hope you find something you like!
