Ages of Dracula casts
This ask made me wonder how close past Dracula casts were to the ages of the characters as established in the novel. Looking at these adaptations:
Dracula (1931)
Horror of Dracula (1958)
Dracula (1974)
Count Dracula (1977)
Dracula (1979)
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Dracula (2020)
In some cases characters are merged or changed; I've associated each character with the person who comes closest to having the same name.
Jonathan Harker (early 20s)
Dracula (1931) - David Manners, 31
Horror of Dracula (1958) - John Van Eyssen, 36

Inspiration Saturday
Hi everyone!!!!! I'm finally back to writing after hard times and I'm back with angst for this secret wip I named you left me (at least for now)
tagged by @daffi-990 @steadfastsaturnsrings thank you <33333
playlist + snippet
Bobby quickly brings them up to date on what happened and where they need help 136 with. Eddie finds himself paired with Buck, who only greeted him quietly, after which he continued to work as if Eddie wasn't here at all, without asking for help with anything. Eddie feels like he's back on his first day at work, only then Buck wanted Eddie not to be part of the team, and now he wants Eddie to just disappear. Painful. Considering they both swore there was no one more important for them, except Chris of course.
“So, hello and silence it’s all I'm getting?” Eddie tries to say it without the sadness in his voice, and he succeeds. But his voice sounds angry, like he blames Buck, accusing him for the silent treatment he is getting over the last two weeks.
Remembering it was him who asked, or better say stated that they need a break - he should have stayed on sadness.
Before Eddie can even curse himself for his stupid decision  - he can’t say about which one exactly the whole break thing or blaming of Buck - he proved it was a bad idea to talk like that with Buck by angry dark, like the skies during the thunderstorm, eyes. Eddie swallows when he swears he can see the lightning flashes inside them.
“It's you, who wanted a break, Eddie. What am I doing wrong now? Giving you too much space? Well, you asked about it,” Buck hisses the last part and leaves him alone. He says something to Bosco who worked with Ravi. She then looks at him not impressed and goes to Eddie to take Buck’s place as his partner, while Buck starts to work with Ravi.
“He deserves better than the ex-not-ex-boyfriend to try to make him feel bad, as he is the villain in the story, for keeping the distance he was asked about by this exact ex-not-ex-boyfriend,” she pins him with such a stare Eddie surprised he is still standing and not falling dead on the place, before starts working. “Not saying that you’re a villain, but even though you have your reasons to ask about time, you have no right,” she again sends the same killing look, “no right to talk to him like that.”
“I know, I just” Eddie sights, kicking the part of the car on the road, “I hate all this situation and I hate my brain for destroying the best relationships I had. I hate that therapy about it not taking me anywhere and Frank tells me it’s because I need to talk to Buck about the problem why I asked about the break when Buck was ready for more for us. When he was so Buck to tell me we can do anything in my tempo, but my fucked up head chose the break, thinking it’s for the best, but,” Eddie looks at the way Buck barely smile on definitely a good joke from Ravi, “but it only leads for nights without sleep, our son looks at me like I’m an idiot. Everyone cast sympathetic glances, and Buck … Buck is not even talking to me while we are working. I just want everything to be ok again. I want everything to be easy. Magical,” another kick to the pure tyre.
“Life is not a fairytale, Diaz. Nothing, especially relationships, are ever easy. So talk to Buckley sooner or, trust me, you will regret you hadn’t. Because right now this man is slipping through your fingers faster than you can imagine,” on than Lena removes the last piece of metal from the road and their work is done.
The blonde woman does not even say goodbye to him, getting back to her team, taking the place near Buck, which should be his. But not now.
Maybe never again.

Count Dracula (1977)
The 1977 BBC tv film Count Dracula might be the best adaptation of Stoker’s novel.
Other adaptations like the 1931, 1958 and 1992 films might have claims to be better as films, but as adaptations they largely ignore the novel in various ways. The 1992 film adapts perhaps a lot of scenes from the novel, but in its storyline, it is more of an adaptation of The Mummy from 1932 than of Stoker’s book. And the 1931 and 1958 films called Dracula are rightfully regarded as peaks of vampire horror movies, but are very unfaithful to the novel.
The 1977 BBC film however is remarkably faithful, with Gerald Savory’s script taking a lot of dialogue straight from the book. There are changes of course, the largest of which is probably the removal of Arthur Holmwood, whose character is instead merged into Quincey, to save time and simplify the film’s character list. There are others changes, like how Mina and Lucy are sisters, and Dracula looks the same throughout and has no moustache.
Yet the 1977 film is probably the film adaptation most based in the book. The film’s length of 2 and a half hours helps in conveying the scope of the book. This faithfulness is to its advantage, as the novel’s characters are usually more interesting than the pop cultural versions of them.
Renfield in this movie is probably the best movie version of the character. It spends time on making him a complex and sympathetic character. It gives him a genuine character arc, where he falls under Dracula’s spell but out of care for Mina rebels against Dracula’s hold on him and pays the ultimate price. Actor Jack Shepard’s portrayal is excellent. Most movie versions cut the character or just make Renfield a creepy bug-eating weirdo, and the 1977 version, by taking more of the character from the novel makes him actually interesting.
The acting and the rather faithful to the novel portrayal of the characters is this version’s greatest strength.
Irish actor Bosco Hogan as Jonathan Harker has an unfortunately 1970s hairstyle, but manages to create a close to definitive performance as Harker. He manages to convey this dynamic character’s whole register, from charming naivety at the story’s start, to haggard traumatized suffering to the fiery determined Jonathan of the story finale.
Frank Finlay as Van Helsing is another definitive portrayal. He truly feels like the Van Helsing of the book, silly fake Dutch accent and all.
Judi Bowker as Mina Harker is also close to definitive. She portrays Mina as a woman who is compassionate and kind yet her kindness is also a strength of spirit, which enables her to resist Dracula’s vampirism. She gets to save Jonathan by shooting his attacker in the film’s climax.
I also like Susan Penhaligon as Lucy Westenra, who conveys a likeable Lucy, and you do feel for her when she is victimized and turned into a monster by Dracula.
Richard Barnes as Quincey has a terrible American cowboy accent, it’s the epitome of an English actor trying to have an American accent. But like with Van Helsing its awfulness feels oddly accurate to how Stoker wrote it, as funny as that sounds. He is a goofy character because of that terrible cowboy accent, almost comic relief, although it’s nice to have Quincey in a Dracula adaptation for once. He is usually left out of adaptations, because the cowboy in a gothic horror feels out of place. Here Arthur has been merged into Quincey, which if anything is the opposite of how most adaptations do it, usually cutting Quincey and keeping Arthur if he is around.
Louis Jourdan as Dracula is an interesting take on the character. Jourdan goes for a suave and handsome Dracula, compared to the book, he doesn’t even de-age into attractiveness. I’m not attracted to men, but I can sense his charisma. And this well-spoken and handsome Dracula probably is attractive to a lot of people. I can barely believe that Jourdan was in his mid 50s when the film was made, he looks at least 15 years younger.
Yet it works, because underneath the charm Jourdan’s Dracula is fundamentally the same character as the book Dracula. He is not a sympathetic misunderstood Byronic hero. Underneath his handsome and suave exterior he is the same monster, selfish and destructive. Jourdan manages to convey a genuine air of menace even when he is being soft-spoken and suave. He exudes a threatening air of complete confidence when he speaks, like he is just playing with his food by having an erudite conversation with his future victim. He can charm and seduce people, but only to destroy them. It’s good acting by Jourdan and a great take on the character.
The film is a tv movie, and it certainly looks cheap compared to some theatrical productions. It’s visibly 70s British tv. The sets really do look like sets, and the switch to video for location shoots is obvious. This movie is uploaded to youtube a lot and youtube compression makes it look absolutely terrible, yet even my dvd copy does show its age and origin.
Yet Philip Saville’s direction is intelligent and tries to do some visually interesting things. There are some nice shots that add to the gothic atmosphere. And there is an attempt to do new things with the TV format, like a POV shaky cam shot, which was probably unusual for TV in 1977. Some of its experiments do fail, like the negative images used to convey the supernatural of Dracula’s power. But the film tries to be visually interesting within the limitations of 70s TV
Overall Count Dracula is a success. It is not the most visually exciting adaptation, but it tries its best within the budget limitations. The overall faithfulness to the novel of the script and the high level of the acting means the characters are more compelling than most pop culture versions of Dracula. Again, there might be better films based on Dracula, but this is probably the best actual adaptation.

Prophets In Our Midst!
Tumblr media
Sloughing Towards Galilee: Prophets in Our Midst!
St. John Bosco
Mark 6:1-6
Mark 6:1-6
"1. Leaving that district, he went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him.
2. With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him?
3. This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him.
4. And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house';
5. and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them.
6. He was amazed at their lack of faith. He made a tour round the villages, teaching."
===============
Even in the little village of Nazareth, long before digital over load, folks had to decide how to engage the wisdom and miraculous acts of One among them. Awe and wonder battled with envy and offense--and in today's Gospel at least for some God -among-them was dismissed as unworthy and irrelevant.
In today's world of information overload, where everyone says whatever they want to say on social media how can we know what messages sorting system. But I point to a few people who have been prophets for me.
I grew up listening to "Mister Rogers", never missed a show, and his words and actions have radiated through me:
"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people to who are helping" "Mister Rogers".
--------
"Love isn't a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like "struggle". To  love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he is")Mister Rogers".)
-----
These were words I heard, read, and my parents had me chew on, until they became reality in my life. This was the heart of the Gospel message over and beyond all else in the "Word of God!"
During my sophomore year in college, at the end of a retreat, Fr. Dan Berrigan, asked all of us: "If you are afraid when you have nothing to lose, when will you stand up to your fears?
Thirty one years ago I heard Des Moines. Iowa Catholic Worker, Frank Cardaro,  give a presentation on being a Catholic Worker, pushing me to embrace my inward call, and so the next year I came to San Francisco. His life is a demonstration of the living Christ.
And in the last six or so years as I have struggled with the over-whelming sense of the anger, and hatred on the internet, the desire to simply turn tail and run away, the young fifteen year old saint, Carlo Acutis reminds me:
"Life is a gift, because as long as we are on the planet, we can grow in our ability to love. The more we learn to love, the more we will enjoy eternal blessedness with God" (Carlo Acutis).
======================
With their lives and ministries these four have shown me the answer.
These ordinary prophets are pillars of my spiritual, moral, and professional life. Their lives--and their few words--point me to God, to my friends on the street, whom we separate ourselves from, so often, rather than seeing them simply as human beings. I help them, and I find they help me more than anyone else! These four saints, along with my friends on the street point me to the Divine within myself. I have found in the words of Terry Pratachett: "The meaning of life is to find your gift. To find your gift is happiness."
Whenever I stray from my role as prophet they call me back! Deo Gratias! Thanks be to God!

Mission in Life! (Revised January 1, 2024):
The best summary for my mission in life is found in the statement that:
"Obedience to Christ does not consist in
engaging in propaganda, nor in engaging in propaganda, nor even in stirring people up, but in being a living mystery. It means to live in such away that's one's life would not make sense if God did not exist."
Being a 'living mystery' means to love 'to the point of folly, and in the words of Kawaga:
"I am a free lance tramp, a vagabond for Christ. I must go until Christ's work is done. I go like the wind."

Colori neutri come base

Read the full article

Ursula 1000 - Movin' To The Sound (Insect Queen Music)
8DPromo · Ursula 1000 - Movin' To The Sound (Insect Queen Music)
Ursula 1000 is the alter ego of Alex Gimeno, a producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist based in Brooklyn, New York. He has released eight albums and mix sessions that take listeners on a retro-futuristic journey of exotic grooves and electronic disco funk. He has performed in over 30 countries, collaborated with notable artists such as Fred Schneider of The B52s, Lady Bunny, and Puddles Pity Party, and has had his music featured in various TV shows, ads, and even the Olympics. Now Ursula 1000 pulls out his dusty smiley face shirt from the closet and goes full-on 303 acid house squelch and jacking 808 grooves for this new single. "Movin' 2 The Sound" showcases Ursula 1000's signature exotic dreaminess, with elements of acid house, throbbing sequencers, and pumping hip-house action. The Berlin-based duo Acid Jerks provided the first remix, taking the acid house business to peak-time bliss. Meanwhile, Fort Knox Five, a leading force in the international funk and breaks scene, focused on electro vibes and b-boy action. Finally, Red Laser Records duo Il Bosco & Metrodome, also known as DJ Absolutely Shit, cranked up the bass, bleeps, and breaks to 11, bringing rave-ready, time-stretching, day-glo dancefloor destruction. This whole single's a trip!
Tyler Stadius (Deepen) – “Yeah, love this! Never get tired of good acid.” Frank Peisker (Bureau45 Agency) – “Killer! The dancefloor will be on fire with this retro electro smasher with a modern twist.” Psycho-Jones (Kater Blau) – “This is Ursula 2023. Love it very much.” Shan Frenzie (2SER FM) – “Love the funk edge on the acid grooves.” BMD (XLNT) – “As expected, Fort Knox 5 have nailed it. Great remix.” Steve ‘Griffo’ Griffiths (Subspace Radio Show) – “As a big fan of Acid Jerks, I was stoked to receive this. Muscular acid house vibes that transport me back to 86.”

The Ekphrastics-  Special Delivery (Harriet)
Tumblr media
Ahh…...it seems like the good old days, a new release by one of Frank Boscoe’s bands and it’s on classic indie label Harriet (which came back to life a few years ago).  You know Boscoe, he was in Wimp Factor 14, Vehicle Flips and a few other bands and here he is doing what he does best, writing clever, wry pop songs about, well, quite a range of all kinds of topics.
Song include the upbeat opener “Ghost Apples,” the very current “Making Fun of Bitcoin” and the zippy, nimble “Putting the Shot”  (I’ve always been kind of fascinated by shot putters).
Elsewhere, “The Steeplechase” sways and it’s almost like a waltz and “The Ballad of Becky Jane Joplin” zooms to the finish line (with a cool slower, dreamy middle part).
Oh and don’t miss the tragicomic “Sunday River Ski Mishap Could’ve Been Worse” which is just as good as the title implies.
After some singles, this is the band’s debut and they put a lot of hard work into creating it so give them the courtesy of a listen (or 10). One of the more fun listens in recent weeks/months.
