just saw that pride art of cu you ordered and I love that it kind of looks like he has too surgery scars? like trans cu for the win
Yes, I've always assumed that was deliberate, based on @forfeda-project's caption on the original piece -- his short stature, beardlessness, and exclusion from the category of "men of Ulster" are all elements which can contribute to trans readings, while other aspects (i.e. his deeply homoerotic relationships with Fer Diad and, not mentioned, with Láeg) can contribute to different queer readings. Though I also appreciate the ambiguity of the scar/line being the same colour as the outline -- just as we can explore different and even contradictory readings of the texts, so we can interpret the same image differently :)
(But since it is definitely Pride Cú -- the Ogham says bród -- I think it's safe to assume that this Cú is queer no matter the specifics of our interpretations.)

Tumblr keeps eating my replies on the post for some reason, so re: your recent ask about "a boy with a difference" in Kinsella:
This line shows up in the encounter with Fóill mac Nechtain, but it seems to be creative liberty on Kinsella's part.
Kinsella's edition: "A boy with a difference!" cried Cú Chulainn. "A boy who came here to look for a fight!" "It will be a pleasure," the warrior said.
CELT edition (Recension I): ‘I am no lad indeed,’ said Cú Chulainn, ‘but the lad who is here has come to seek battle with a man.’ ‘That pleases me well,’ said the warrior.
My knowledge of Old Irish is basically nonexistant, but if I've stumbled my way through O'Rahilly's Irish edition of Recension 1 correctly, "Nímda mac écin" is the phrase OP is looking for (on p.23). I believe it does accurately translate to "I am no lad indeed."
ah, thank you for this! i did not have the energy to go digging around too much.
and yeah, there are a few things in kinsella's translation that can be misleading like that, or seem to be loaded with meaning in english that isn't there in the irish. that's why i generally work from o'rahilly's translations, because they're more literal, though obviously that's bc i'm an academic and a nerd; there's nothing wrong with using kinsella for general reading, but i wouldn't base any analysis on him -- especially not of single words
@belafleck (it will not let me tag you for some reason), i hope this answers your question!

Ogham: An Introduction
Tumblr media
What is ogham?
Ogham (pronounced OH-mm) is a writing system that dates from the 4th century CE that was used to write Primitive Irish and is used today as both a writing and magical and divinatory system. Each letter in the Ogham alphabet is called a fid (pronounced fee) and a group of letters is called a feda (pronounced fed-ah).
Stones with ogham inscriptions are found all around Ireland and areas surrounding the Irish Sea.
You may also see it spelled ogham spelled as ogam, which is the Old Irish spelling (the version of Irish that came after Primitive Irish).
The original alphabet has 20 letters and is divided into four groups of five letters called aicme (hear pronuncation). An additional five letters were added to the ogham in the Old Irish period (600CE to 900CE) and these are known as the forfeda and are less commonly used today.
Each letter has many associated lists that may have been used as mnemonic devices as well as bríatharogaim or kennings which are phrases that are associated with each letter which we can date back to the Old Irish period.
As a quick aside: Often when people have heard of ogham it’s through Robert Graves’ The White Goddess and his “Celtic tree calendar” or “Celtic astrology.” Ogham is not a calendar or time-keeping system and has many associations beyond just trees.
What do the ogham letters look like?
The ogham letters are formed by tally marks that come off of a central line. They are generally read from bottom to top when the text is arranged vertically (as it often is on stone inscriptions) or from left to right if it is arranged horizontally. The rightmost line of this images is the forfeda who's characters are more complex than the original alphabet.
Tumblr media
Where did ogham come from?
There are 2 main theories on where ogham comes from. The first is that ogham was created by the Irish to be a written language that could not be understood by Latin speakers (primarily for political. religious, and military purposes).
The other mainstream theory is that the ogham was invented by early Irish Christians because the Irish language was difficult to write in the Latin alphabet.
There is also an older theory that ogham was invented by Druids in Gaul which has since been discredited as it has since been shown that ogham was almost certainly created for writing primitive Irish.
What are ogham's mythical origins?
The Book of Invasions and The Scholar’s Primer both have similar stories about the invention of ogham that relate to the Tower of Babel (see this episode of The Constant podcast for more context around this).
In this version of the story, a (fictional) Irish king sends out a group of scholars shortly after the fall of the Tower of Babel to try and reconstruct our previously shared language that the Christian God had destroyed. Those scholars take the best part of each new language that they find and mix them all together and create the Irish language/recreate the original language before the fall of the Tower of Babel and the ogham writing system with each fed being named after one of the scholars who helped reconstruct the language.
However The Scholar's Primer contains a second creation story and it tells us that the god Ogma, a God known for his skills in speech and poetry, invented the ogham to warn the God Lugh that his wife would be stolen away to the Otherworld unless he protected her with birch.
What are ogham's uses today?
Today ogham is primarily used in Pagan circles as a writing and divinatory system. The bríatharogaim and associated lists for each letter are generally used as a guide to the letter’s divinatory meaning. The main reference cited for ogham as a divinatory tool is a brief mention in The Wooing of Etaine but not much information is given on how exactly the ogham was used other than it involving yew wands with the ogham written on them, but reading methods tend to vary from practitioner to practitioner.

Dia duit! Do you happen to know of any other blogs about Irish culture and language that aren't racist about it?
Dia is Muire Duit!
Embarrassingly, I don’t interact with all that many other people who do this sort of thing, mainly for 3 reasons:
(1) Professional distancing -- Small field, everyone knows each other, which means that if I find anyone or anyone finds me, there’s a not-small chance that we know one another IRL. There’s a reason my palms get a little sweaty when I think about new people coming into Tumblr, and a solid portion of that’s that I don’t want....too much attention on what I do here and, especially, not on my main. (Which I know is the equivalent of holding up a meat stick to a bunch of dogs and going “DO YOU WANT THE MEAT STICK?”) I can’t really vent about my department on main anymore simply because, even though names aren’t attached to things, it’s ridiculously easy to narrow me down if you know what to do. I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong, but there’s a difference between Me On Here VS Me in a Professional Context, and it’s been difficult to try to make that sort of...shift from being a shitposting teenager to suddenly being an Academic™. (But also, I don’t want people to think I’m unapproachable, either -- rule of thumb is “Mutually Assured Destruction.” You know I’m on Tumblr, I know you’re on Tumblr, and we both never mention it.)
(2) Wanting to distance myself a little from what I do Every Day -- Posting on here and interacting with people who are willing to seek me out on here is fine, I like that, I enjoy doing it, I enjoy everyone who follows me, but it’s much more on my terms here. (Hence the inconsistent posting schedule.) When I was younger, before this was my job, I could be around it constantly, and it was a lot of fun, but now it’s like....it’s a Lot, now that it’s my actual life. I check in on the Irish Mythology tag every once in a while, but I can’t really follow it like I used to just because it’s this constant state of *engagement* for me, in a way that, say, French musicals that three people in the world like don’t have.
Brain tired, brain needs nappy.
(3) I’ve seen some people on here, when I’ve looked into blogs to follow be....well. Bitches. Especially re: Americans taking this on and, as an American myself who is very serious about my line of work, it does. Rather sting. (I have a lot of complex opinions on the whole business that I won’t get into now, but the tldr is that I get why people can be hesitant, especially with the borderline fetishization of Ireland in the States but, at the same time, the effect is often scaring people who have a genuine interest in this sort of thing away and, when it comes to an endangered language....the more people we have taking the time to learn it, the better.) (But also, if you imply that my degree, which I got from an *Irish* uni is worthless, the claws will come out. I made a lot of sacrifices for that....glorious....piece of poster board in Latin.)
BUT. BUT.
I do have a few. I want to emphasize that these aren’t all the Good People who do Irish Things on Tumblr, these are just the ones, off the top of my head, I can think of.
@trans-cuchulainn Excellent resource on the Ulster Cycle, A+ shitposts
@finnlongman Another Ulster Cycle specialist
@ad-ciu A former colleague and friend of mine, one of the only human beings in the world I trust with Mythological Cycle content. Not on as much these days because they’re doing things like “schoolwork” and “having a life” and “getting a PhD”, but genuinely a wonderful person to follow so you can catch when they do post.
@amylouioc Wonderful artwork inspired by medieval Irish lit, explicitly anti-racist, multicultural Tuatha Dé, Nuada is a snacc.
@forfeda-project Another A+ art blog, am considering getting their pub shirt for Fled Bricrenn to wear at conferences.
@bloctg4 Shitposts in the Irish language, brought to you by Ireland’s own Irish-speaking TV station (or, rather, an intern at said TV station.)
Just want to emphasize -- I definitely don’t believe these are the only non-racist Irish themed blogs on Tumblr, these are just the ones that came to mind, especially since these days I’m the social media equivalent of a hag hanging out in a little cave, sometimes poking my head out to drop a shitpost before returning, shaking my head and muttering.

Ogam-ring/sigil for HRT *Transwitches*
First off: trans-NB sibling, if you aren’t on HRT or not going for the physical changes, you’re valid! This is to share for those that do, but know that I support you wholeheartedly.
After getting worried about the less desible (harmfull) symptoms of going for HRT I decided to magic something up for it. The premise was “To filter the harmfull outcomes, and enhace the desirable outcomes”
For this, I decided to take the Ogam, that had given me good physical results before, and ask it for the Feda to use. I had to decided if I wanted to use this symbol on my body, or with the hormones. In this case, having decide that the premise was about the potential harmfull effects of the hormone, I decided to put the symbol with them, instead of the body, to program it in a way to work as I intended.
And that’s what I did from one medical consult to the other, to see the physical changes and outcomes with my doctor, and decided if the symbol was
So, below the cut you’ll find the symbol in question (so i don’t bombard the lot of witchblr with it), what it means, and variables in question when testing it (hell yeah scientific method!)
[disclaimer: I’m not a doctor, I’m using myself to see how this works, so be mindfull of that]
Onwards!
Here’s the ring:
Tumblr media
I have been trying out ogam sigils, and find that rings make for nice energy loops, so that’s the shape i’m working with.
We have, upwards and going anti-clock wise, Beith as the ‘here it enters this’ in this case the hormones, and it starts the purifying aspect, of removing the banefull from the hormone and start ‘new changes’ that are ‘befenicial’.
Then we have Gort for the ‘good place’, or in this case to invoque the desirable growth, to make the body the temple-good place to inhabit.
Then comes Luis/Lus, for protection, to nurture the changes and guide it in a way the body may process correctly
Then, a Forfeda (yes, I use those in my practice), Ebad, invoquing the chace of wisdom, or in this case, honoring the pursuit of the ‘true’ self. In this case it helps with the self image, while also conecting the spirit-mind-body of the person, while settling the changes in a harmonious way.
Finally, Coll, it conects directly with Ebad - it’s what that Feda is chasing. It says ‘here’s the answer you’ve been looking for’, conecting the circle with the beginning, making it self-sustainable. It represents the ‘liminal’, like the undergoing change, knowing this is the fringe of the physical transformation and allows for them to exist in a way that sustaint the personal times of the person.
Together they anounce: [I initiate a change, that grows protected, and reveals who i am]
It technically could be used medications as well, but i wouldn’t recomend it on cancer treatment because of Gort.
I drew this ring in golden ink on the box of my gel hormones. And maybe it’s time to talk about the varibles. What do I mean about varibles? things that can’t be calculated because everyone is a world and it could have had an impact on the working of this ring, so it may have altered the results but can’t be said so for sure.
Varibles:
1 -  First off: genetics. There’s a pre-programed path of growth and change and it often follows the family’s pattern.
2- This was made with a transmasc in mind (masc-NB), but the way it works was not gendered, so I feel confident it may work for witchever hormones you take
3- I... have a thing with Inanna/Ishtar. Historically Their priest-ess would change gender while in ceremony. Sometimes even outside of ceremony. So, that’s a thing in this case.
4- The hormones: I’m personally using androlone gel 1%. It is often said that it has the most subtle changes bla bla bla. Anyways, the type of hormone and how you apply it is a varible too.
Now, for the ‘experiment’:
I put the ring on the gel-box, for a period of three months, up until the tests my medic proscribed to me to see how i was progressing.
The results (description of physical changes, including genitalia):
On the first month I percieved my throat ‘opening up’, and because I used to be on choir and my friends too, the change of vibration was noticeable for us, but not to my doc.
By the time I started the second month I couldn’t hold my high notes anymore, and my voice would go rought like flu, and break. My body hair started to darken, and my clitoris started to enlarge.
By third month mark, the moment I sat down on my doc’s office they noticed my voice changes - I am correctly gendered on phone calls! They said it was a lot, and when I described the rest of the changes, they observed my body and facial hair, a bit dumfounded. I told them about my clitoris, about the libido raising, and was like ‘you’re missing the top surgery basically and you’re set’ - which i plan to, but tl;dr: I have all ‘desirable’ changes be noticeable and visible on the first three months of treatment.
Now, about the lab results, which is the way we have to know how the hormones have been impacting the body: none of the ‘harmfull’ expressions have presented themselves, meaning, my other hormones are good and well, my red blood cells are well within the normal leves, and there was no need to correct my dosage for the hormones dosis. So currently: no harmfull effects present.
And why am I sharing this?
Well, I think we trans-NB are a community that can help eachother, in this case my little grain is a bit of magic to help along those that can try for hormones. I will update this every few months as I keep track of my health with the doc’s appointments, but know it’s a work in progress. But now that the lab results came in, I feel confident enough to share this with you all.
If you decide to use this ring and try to track your changes-results, I would love to hear it.
Best wishes, witch-siblings, you’re valid and beloved by the stars!
~Howl

Eamhancholl
BeechLetter: X (Xi) Forfeda Flash Card – Vicky Newton The appearance of Eamhancholl in a reading indicates that you are entering a time of cleansing. This might be a physical clean out of belongings but also an emotional and spiritual cleansing. On a physical level take time to consider if you are holding on to things needlessly or if there are things you can pass on to others to their benefit.…

Studying Ogham runes and I'm wondering whether Js should be translated phonetically or using one single replacement. For example, Jean would probably use the G replacement like ᚛ᚌᚓᚐᚅ᚜ (ignoring forfeda), whereas Elijah would use an S like John vs. Seán (᚛ᚓᚂᚔᚄᚐᚆ᚜).
I've seen sources state to replace all Js with Gs because it's the closest letter but I've also seen some sources say to replace all the Js with Hs. I suppose it doesn't really matter if it's personal use but replacing a letter not present in Ogham with a single letter that is doesn't feel right.

not of all the ogham letters are trees (just most)
so I see this a lot and I wanna make a quick PSA that might turn into a giant post because I don’t like telling people they’re wrong without providing the correct info BUT
not all of the ogham letters correspond with trees and I’m not sure who bungled that up but I see a lot of wiccans making this misconception so I’d like to clear it up. *most* of them are trees or tree-related, but some of them are metals or random objects so here’s a list.
I’m also going to add a Bríatharogam (kenning or meaning) for each. There are 3 different sets of Bríatharogaim (Morainn mac Moin, Mac ind Oc, & Con Culainn) for each fid (letter). The first two are found in the Ogam Tract and the Auraicept na n-Eces, but Con Culainn came much later. I personally tend to stick with the Morainn mac. If a particular letter really speaks to you I highly recommend looking at the other sets of Bríatharogaim because the meanings/kennings vary immensely. or you don’t have to use them at all because ngl they are confusing as hell. it’s up to you.
Aicme Beithe:
ᚁ Beith (Birch) “féochos foltchain” (withered foot with fine hair)
ᚂ Luis (Flame or Herb) “lí sula” (luster of the eye)
ᚃ Fern (Alder) “airenach fían” (vanguard of warriors)
ᚄ Saille (Willow) “lí ambi” (pallor of a lifeless one)
ᚅ Nuin (Forked Branch) “costud síde” (establishing peace)
Aicme hÚatha:
ᚆ  Úath (Terror) “condál cúan” (an assembly of hounds)
ᚇ Dair (Oak) “ardam dosae” (highest tree)
ᚈ Tinne (Iron Stick) “trian roith” (1/3 parts of a wheel)
ᚉ Coll (Hazel) “caíniu fedaib” (fairest tree)
ᚊ Cert (Rag or Bush) “digu fethail” (tatters of clothing)*
Aicme Muine:
ᚋ Muin (Ruse or Love) “tressam fedmae” (strongest exertion)’
ᚌ Gort (Field) “misliu feraib” (sweet grass)
ᚍ nGétal (Slaying) “lúth lego” (sustenance of leeches)
ᚎ Straif (Sulphur) “tressam rúamnai” (strongest reddening [like a dye]
ᚏ Ruis (Red) “tindem rucci” (intense blushing)
Aicme Ailme:
ᚐ Alim (Pine) “ardam iachta” (loudest groan)
ᚑ Onn (Ash [Tree]) “congnaid ech” (wounder of horses)
ᚒ Úr (Earth [Dirt]) “úraib adbail” (dwelling in the cold)
ᚓ Edad (Aspen) “ergnaid fedo” (discerning tree)
ᚔ Idad (Yew) “sinem fedo” (oldest tree)
*for this one I used the Con Culainn because the Morainn Mac doesnt have a clear translation and it’s more applicable than the Mac ind Oc
native Irish folks please feel free to correct me if I’ve gotten anything wrong, I know I left off the forfeda, I'll probably go back and add it later

Ahh, exciting, the first bits of merch I ordered from @forfeda-project have arrived! A couple still to come but I am hyped to have these.
Tumblr media
I think I might make this my workout top; there's nothing like a motivational Morrígan threat/promise. It's so cool to have artwork relating to texts I've worked on – the Morrígan shirt is a reference to Táin Bó Regamna, which I researched for my Weird Birds Project; the Watcher shirt is a reference to Acallam na Senórach, which I wrote part of one of my undergrad dissertations on; and pride Cú is, obviously, my boy (I've also ordered an art print of that one, for my wall).
There's so little good medieval Irish-inspired art out there, so I'm delighted to be able to support the Forfeda Project 😊
The only trouble is, I keep trying to link the blog from Facebook or Instagram, and apparently Facebook has flagged the link as malicious in some way, because it blocks it every time! I don't know why – I always have to direct people to search for it instead.

I haven’t been making many carved rune and ogam sets lately other than on a commission basis due to carpal tunnel, but I did dig out a few sets I had leftover from vending events. I have two carved Elder Futhark sets, one painted Elder Futhark, and one carved Celtic Ogam with Forfeda. All of them have leather bags made from old jackets. They’re all available at http://thegreenwolf.etsy.com - please note that prices on the carved sets include shipping.

We are making a set. The bottom pic has the blanks. There were 31 in total, to give myself some extras just in case I mess up any while making them. I’ll be making a set of 20, won’t be using the forfeda just yet. The example was made on one of the blanks that was shorter than I’d like. It is also some other variety of wood. Mystery wood. This was done to get a feel of the paint pens I’ll be using for making my set. They are confusing things...I’ve also messed with them on the packaging the things came in too. Given that I have a long weekend coming up I’ll be making the set over those four days I have off. This week will be spent preparing for the making.

logged into reddit for the first time in 9 years bc some folks on the old irish board (subreddit? what are they called) were trying to translate a bit of ogham which, properly, read CEDAF(EA)DOTBCIRI. absolute nonsense in modern irish. while some words were put forward it was ultimately concluded to be nonsense in old irish as well, and since it was a Yeats book no one was terribly surprised.
but see, these people were fucking brilliant. breaking down the forfeda and possible stems, explaining it all as they went. they were simply too smart to consider the truth.
enter clare, situational dumbass.
the use of forfeda is a strong indication of ‘i translated this from english’, & the Yeats thing compounded my suspicions. i was like alright. if i were an idiot who played fast and loose with the irish language. how would i read ogham.
the answer of course being upside down, since english readers are used to top-to-bottom text. well, we’d tried that. it was still IRICBTOB(EA)FEDEC, complete nonsense. i said to myself, if i were really, truly, completely unfamiliar with this script. how would i read ogham.
backwards.
Ted Gensamer, designer of this book cover, wrote IRISHFOL(K)TALES, in english, presumably copying it out letter-by-letter and assuming it was read horizontally, and left-to-right. and like, not to speak ill of ted gensamer. but if you have the whole beith-luis-nin in front of you, how do you get it upside down AND backwards? why even bother using the letters at that point? just make random tally marks and call it a day. smh
anyway reddit sucks & kept telling me i wasn’t logged in so like. sorry for trying to engage w your website bro
