You guys. You guys. There are enzymes called scramblase and flippase. That is the cutest thing ever.
I don't need to know them, they were just in an illustration of a cell membrane my professor used, but apparently (according to Wikipedia) they move phospholipids around within the cell membrane.
Oh wait! Stop the presses. There is also a floppase!

probably the stupidest thing in all of biochemistry is that flippases and floppases are proteins with distinct functions from each other. flippases flip lipids in while floppases flop out in case you were wondering (my exam is in 5 hours ahahahahahaha)

flippase and floppase still the most elite enzyme naming combo no one is doing it like them

I'll be lying in bed and then I remember there's enzymes named flippase and floppase that do exactly what they sound like they do and I just start giggling

Hi Dr. Julia! I'm here with a dumb question but what's the difference between essay and assay cause in spanish they mean the same? I'm reading a paper and I think that I understand the difference but I thought better ask! Also I love the words floppase flippase and scramblase
Hey thanks for this ask because I think otherwise I never would’ve learned that “essay” and “assay” mean the same in Spanish! And I feel this is very important for me to learn because I a) live in a US state with lots of Spanish-speakers and b) work in a field that uses those two words commonly. So very good to know!
Essay is a long written piece of work, like the kind you get assigned in class. For example: your teacher may assign you to write “a 5 page essay on the pros and cons of having puppies in class, due Monday”.
An assay is a “catch all” term for any analytical experiments or tools that involve measuring something, or can also be used as a verb to describe doing such a measurement. A very common assay is an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay, abbreviated as ELISA, that measures (or assays) the quantity of something specific in a liquid sample. An example of an ELISA is an at-home pregnancy test that measures levels of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone in urine. For more info (and probably a more professional definition of “assay” than what I provided), here’s the wikipedia link to the word.
I hope that helps! And yes, I agree I love those enzyme names as well! Sometimes we scientists can have a lot of fun naming things (and other times we just keyboard smash, it seems like).

Bad protein names that prove that biologists suck at naming
MAP kinase kinase kinase kinase
ubiquitin
sonic hedgehog
hedgehog
flippase
floppase
pikachuin
literally the entire fruit fly genome
a good chunk of the worm genome too
like there’s a gene called cheap date
and several more that I’m sure I’m leaving off because I got to ubiquitin and almost rage quit science because it’s so fucking stupid

Did I ever tell y’all my #scientistgoals for my future?
I wanna discover some really important thing, something so important that it will be covered in high school and/or first/second-year undergrad courses in university. And, when I do, I’m gonna name it something incredibly silly and easy to remember, just to make people giggle when they refer to it!
My favourite examples of scientists that actually did that:
> The “floppase” enzyme

Studying for bio and the people who discovered the proteins that move lipids from the exoplasmic side to the cytosolic side of the membrane and vice versa “flippases” and “floppases” respectively.

Transbilayer lipid motion has been dubbed ‘flip-flop’ and it is unfortunate that this rather childish term has stayed in the scientific literature, together with the flippase and floppase terms that designate lipid translocating enzymes
get fucked scientists I will defend my flip-floppy membrane proteins for as long as i live

"Wait. 'Flippases and Floppases' are an actual thing?!" "In lipid bilayers yes, they are enzymes that aid lipid movement between leaflets." *laughs* "Seriously though, Flippases and Floppases. What absolute legend came up with those as names for enzymes."
Absolutely losing it

biochemistry is so funny actually like what do you mean there’s a thing called flipflop diffusion that gets catalyzed by flippases and floppases
5 notes · View notes
Note
also if i were an enzyme i'd be flippase so i could flip your lipids all night long
it’s better than floppase I guess
