like, enough I'm recommending it even though i know half of you will hate the smell so so so much

(the baking soda soak recommendation i found really reduced the smell significantly, highly recommend)

it's juicy enough to use my driest ink, too! which is a relief.

makes me want to try their music nib next.

to be serious though, the things I like about this pen include but are not limited to:

it feels nice to hold - the resin is warm and it feels like it's just a tiny bit soft while being really really sturdy in the hand, and it's a nice big pen for me without being heavy

the nib writes really smooth at the thinnest and it's not too bad at it's thickest either, tho I admit that that takes a lot more force than my hand is good for right now in any sustained way

even though I'm not able to exert enough pressure to get the full Flex without a fair amount of strain on my part, a) remember that I have a half paralyzed hand doing all of this, so your mileage may vary, and b) just the light line variation I get with natural writing with it is so appealing to me, I can't overstate it

and it's just so juicy, it lays down a lot of ink, and I know that that can be actually a problem in a lot of people's experience, but I adore it

and the clip looks like a whale! how incredibly nerdy! I love it when my pens are nerdy.

記得十年前，想要一支用來書寫英文書法的 #彈性尖鋼筆 ，選擇很少，當時最低價的也要一千元，還很硬很難寫。而且當時大部分的彈性尖鋼筆，如果想要用來書寫銅版體，細線要達到如髮絲一般的書寫標準，往往得需要請人研尖。

自從越南彈性尖問世後，彈性尖鋼筆的價格變得人人負擔得起，不到新台幣兩百元的價格，筆尖極細，用來寫英文書法，不必再苦苦找人研尖。便宜，寫壞了不心疼。

但！容我打個預防針！

我覺得它���用上是有門檻的。

我曾帶越南彈性尖鋼筆去英文書法課上讓學生們試寫，同學們寫一寫......恩，真的如我所說，比沾水筆還要刮紙！滅火，回去繼續用沾水筆順手。

它不適合用來畫圖或寫中文(除非你想寫螞蟻字)，它的筆尖實際上是沾水筆尖，沒有銥點，加上筆尖極細，寫起來非常刮紙，寫在鬆軟的紙上很容易勾起紙毛，連帶的拖出墨水，破壞字跡的細節。

當然，便宜就是它最大的優點，才兩百元，這樣的書寫表現，很可以了啦！

它另外一個優點是不怎麼挑墨，大部分的彈尖鋼筆，需要挑流動率高的墨水，不然容易寫出空心字；而越南彈尖大部分的墨水都OK！

另外有許多自學的初學者，不知道彈尖鋼筆、沾水筆正確的書寫方式，常常大力壓筆、左拖又跩，使得筆尖錯位甚至損壞，這款筆大概也頗適合這樣的人，不貴嘛！寫壞不心疼。

I was looking at the line work you do and was wondering: do you ink it physically and then scan it, or is it fully digital? It's really good and gives a solid grit to it and adds texture to your works. How do you do that?

99% of what I post here is all digital because I don’t really have access to a scanner very often! my inking style looks the way it does because I draw traditionally in my sketchbooks a LOT and the way I ink digitally is Exactly The Same as I do traditionally (which is why you see a lot of double lines in my inking, stray lines, or scribbling when I fill in solid blacks without the fill tool, I also always turn off any stabilization features a brush might have bc I don’t like the way it feels) and I often go looking for brushes that are gritty or crunchy so that it looks similar to the pens I use on paper!

You can see a bunch of the stray lines and general scribbling I did here, which is exactly what my irl sketchbooks look like, and the circled brushes (I edited these after I downloaded them all to have 0 stabilization) are the ones I used for it!

Good inexpensive alternative to flex nibs for those looking for line variability on the cheap.

Also a bit easier and faster to use, if you don't mind twisting the pen around to get fat strokes. really good for quickly and precisely filling in blacks. I normally use my Pentel Pocket brush for the task, but it can be a bit tough to get really tight spots without going over a line.

Id still say a flex nib has more fun bounce, but it's like sketching with a rapier versus a machete. Rapier is beautiful but difficult to fight with. but you cant deny how gorgeous the forms are, and nothing beats the precision. Machete is a beautiful multi tool thats far sturdier but has the nice swish and form all its own. And requires way less finagling to wield.

i can see the fude being more beneficial for fast sketching where as the flex is better for careful considered inkwork.

ok maybe its just like an offhand comment, but I'm like obsessed with Greta asking for a pen specifically with a flexible nib when going to get supplies to write the letter to Charlie.

because like I am a person who uses fountain pens everyday and has for years and like, the only reason you'd use a flex nib is if you were like planning on doing some very nice handwriting. not necessarily calligraphy (though you could use some for that) but like if you're just writing a letter you don't need that. it would probably get in the way if you weren't like intending to write carefully and neatly.

i understand why many fountain pen users prefer subdued, more professional ink colours but the thing about me is i dont use my pens much outside of drawing and writing in my planner or oc idea notebook so i’m armed with three jinhaos and one kakuno each with a different shimmer ink at all times

also signing documents with in glittery pink is awesome

I miss my old Wacom, the lines don’t feel as smooth on Huion even with the stabilizer settings changed, it just doesn’t have that smooth glide with the smallest bit of friction to it

I think I need to adjust the pen for more ink flow tbh but we'll see. I'm also not used to having to vary pen pressure and as much as I love them I don't write with fountain pens nearly as much as I'd like! Plus lbr I don't naturally have very nice handwriting anyway. I've been looking up exercises to improve it lmao but we'll see how that goes.

Oh, I'm using a Noodler Konrad Flex pen with Noodler's American Eel ink here. I've heard both glowing and kind of middling reviews of their stuff but it's abt the only cheapish pen with a flex nib you can get these days so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you’ve never used an Omniflex nib from Monteverde, just a reminder: it is NOT a flex nib. I’d treat it more as a soft nib, something that has a little spring and bounce that adds character to your regular handwriting. It doesn’t take much to overflex this pretty nib and misalign the tines + cause hard starting! The nib requires no pressure at all to write, and that’s how I’d recommend you use it. The weight of the pen should give it enough force as is to lay down a rich, wet, and satisfying line.
