Slimmer in the Seventies: Simplicity 5401

This kind of fit-and-flare style with fitted waist and flared skirt appears in the 1940s as well as in this pattern from 1972. But such a silhouette didn’t have the trademarked Slimmer name attached to it. In the 1940s, it would have been recommended to women as an especially good look for a woman with a slightly bottom-heavy hourglass figure as the best way to make the most of a small waist and skim over the hips. Since the 1920s, American women had been self-conscious about their weight. That was the first fashion revolution of the 20th Century, and the second came in the 1960s when a very thin look came in that toyed with the idea of dressing women as tall children. The 1970s saw longer dresses so women didn’t have to worry about miniskirts making movement embarrassing. It also saw more mature styles, as the baby-doll and simple A-line silhouettes were abandoned in favor silhouettes that were clearly womanly.

So slimmer was still a look to aim for in the 1970s. Other features would have helped with its slimming purpose. See the princess seams which create a set of vertical lines which make the waist look smaller. Then the V-neckline and the other features are all towards the top of the dress. Notice how the white trim and the white collar draw the eye up to the face for emphasis while the short sleeves widen the very top of the figure making the waist look slimmer in comparison. The print dress is less effective in this, but breaking up the entire silhouette, it also distracts from any bulk in the figure.

 They recommended lightweight wools as well as crepes and challis, all of which would have made the swing of the skirt graceful, and also poplin and linen which would have been crisper and belled the skirt out further. The colors chosen remind me of the 4th of July, but you can imagine more subtle or darker colors as well.
