A little experiment with leather-effect Fimo to make my plain new coffee tumbler a little brighter and more me. Can I see all of the mistakes I made? Absolutely. But I still made a thing that makes my world more colourful and that's the energy I want more of this year.
I want to get back into doing more polymer clay things, even though my physical crafting space is a bit limited at the moment.

My cosplay wig is here... I need to style it later this week but it feels like a big step towards actually finishing my cosplay for the con this time. I also got chain for the coat too, and some fabrics I already have in store. I still need some dyes and paints, some fabrics I don't have yet (mostly blue for shirt, faux leather for boots and gold-yellow for the inside of the coat), something to create all the various decorations out of (I don't have a 3D printer, so.) And of course, materials for the sword. I'm thinking everything will be mostly foam (EVA foam type), possibly some cardboard with reinforcements where needed, polymer clay (Fimo) where I need super detailed shapes, or if I can get my hands on it, worbla/similar. We've worked with many of the materials before and so it all should be pretty straightforward, I'm just mildly dreading the actual process of creating everything.
#the wig could be better quality but I'm honestly not going to bother getting a more custom one before I assemble the entire cosplay#and see how it turns out#besides when the friend we used to cosplay with was alive#we were occasionally titled 'the wig wizard' of our cosplayer friend group. it's a weirdly niche skill we have.#so I think I can make it work#it'll just take a lot of styling and product to get it ~just right~#chalk thoughts

. Set with most of the bits added. I glued all the handles I had made onto the draws with a glue gun along with the tap. Although I had lost one so I had to make another extra in my own time. I also added some leather effect Fimo pieces I had baked to add to the pile of fur fabric I had scavenged from the College fabric tub to add some other materials/ingredients to the bottom shelf. For the carpet I had brought some black fabric with silver glitter which made it look like a night sky rug (which felt appropriate for a god character due to the celestial theming) which I cut down to size.

My OFMD Blackbeard cosplay plans
Writing them down helps with the good ‘ole adhd.
So I’m working on my Blackbeard cosplay, because despite the movie Blackbeard’s Ghost being my favourite childhood movie for the last three decades; it has taken seeing Taika Waititi in his pirate road warrior outfit to make me actually cosplay as the character.
I’m starting with the jacket as I think that’s going to be the key costume piece. I’m bidding on a couple of second hand leather jackets on eBay right now. I want the total jacket cost to come under £10 for materials so this might take some time to find.
However I can sew and I’ve worked with leather before so I should be able to remove the right sleeve and use that material to make the shoulder paldron perhaps reinforced with plastic to make it stand up?
I’ll definitely need to buy a leather needle as I do not have one. Ed’s jacket has shark teeth adornments and silver bits. Can get the stud machine thing cheap enough to do that, though I would be afraid of loosing real shark teeth so might make from fimo.
Would probably just use cotton trousers instead of leather, but dress them with studs etc. knee brace will have to go on my right knee instead of left, because that’s literally my bad knee.
Purple undershirt and black scarfy thing should be cheap enough to get second hand or from primark.
Wondering if you can get a custom fake tattoo sleeve printed? Or I can paint on with fabric paint. Note to self buy body stocking fabric.
Will use greasepaint beard and talc in hair.
Will need one gun and one knife, like everybody else.

Got a couple more polymer clays and did some test baking. I'm not entirely sure how to tell if they've been baked thoroughly, since I have no idea how they're supposed to feel when cured? I've been going rather slowly with the baking in case my oven's temp was too high. Now my Super Sculpey has gotten very, very hard and snapped when I tried to bend it, but Cernit and Fimo are quite flexible still. The Fimo leather effect is supposed to be bendy, so that's okay I guess. Really not sure about the Cernit translucent, though 🤔
I haven't touched the Cosclay at all, this will be a project once I'm a little more comfy with the others.

Mac’s TROS Padme Cosplay Adventure!
This post is a follow-up to my
TLJ Cosplay Adventure.
I thought that, as TROS is the final film in the Skywalker Saga, I ought to update the costume. Plus, I was going to Washington, DC to see TROS with some fellow Reylos and I wanted to look my best ;)
I did a test run last Halloween, switching the linen belt pieces for a poly-cotton blend. It was far too thick. So I decided to keep the linen belt but dye it. At the advice of some marvelous people in the Cosplay chat of the @reylofanfictionanthology Discord, I treated the linen as though it were a synthetic. I also used twice as much dye as called for.
I tried to make the middle layer of the belt out of leather, but without a sewing machine it proved impossible. I kept the heavy felt I’d been using and updated the embroidery to a canon-compliant gold.
I made a new belt “buckle”-- this time out of wood instead of a last-minute cardboard monstrosity.
I have to give props to Crayola: their kids’ clay really doesn’t dry out. My necklace from TLJ was intact. Still, I needed a new, properly shaped one. I used Fimo clay this time. The new one is on the right.
The hardest part of this was making a new tunic. I had:
a) no sewing machine
b) no pattern
c) a cat who kept laying on the fabric
and d) only one shot-- I just had 1 5/8 yards of this fabric.
Operation Cosplay Without A Pattern began by tracing a dress and shoo-ing my cat while I pinned the fabric.
Surprisingly, it was a success. Sort of. You see, much like Shakira, I have hips that don’t lie. My hips split my seams and I had to re-sew most of the tunic. I ironed hem tape and a strip of fabric over the inside of the seams as well. It didn’t split again.
Next was my hair. For TLJ I had the hairstyle correct, but it felt thin. I decided to augment it with some fake hair. I have a number of cheap wigs, so I chopped them up. I tested this on Star Wars Day 2019. The hair was too auburn in pictures. I bought a medium brown wig and wove that in with the auburn and dark brown. Half of the braids are mine, half are synthetic. In this light, it looks like there’s too much medium brown. *shrug*
The last thing I changed were my shoes and leg wraps. I found a flat gray boot to wear and swapped the plum silk for a plum poly-cotton.

I had to be very careful of how I moved in the tunic (you can see that it’s tight on my hips), but HUZZAH! I’m very pleased with the finished product.
More importantly, I was so, so, so happy to meet people I’ve been talking to online for years and to see TROS with them. No matter how we felt about the film, I had a great time sitting with everyone and having a late dinner and drinks after. ABSOLUTELY worth the 12+ hour drive.
The cosplay is retired, but the memories remain <3
