I didn't want to romance Solas at first bc of all the angst but the more I played the more I realized how fucked up the inquisitor Lavellan is even without romancing Solas. Especially in case of a mage...It feels like the game is punishing you for siding with mages and elves or being one yourself. Your companions don't like you, you lose your faith, your entire history is one big lie, you can even lose your entire clan. Both the mage rebellion and the dalish are constantly demonized. You have to listen to racist or pro templar bullshit. No one understands you except for Solas who leaves in the end. I gave his romance another try and oh god. This is like ultimate loneliness and isolation. I had no idea why would someone like Solas fall in love with a modern elf but now I know why. Because Lavellan is like the only one who can see a real person in him. In modern Thedas, he is nothing but another pair of pointy ears. An apostate. An elven hobo. During the days of ancient elves he was nothing but a title. The Dread Wolf. A symbol, not a real person. And literally the same thing can be applied to Lavellan who is being crushed by the weight of their title. Who is being devoured by the narrative until there is nothing left of them. They are so alike, damn. Inquisition companions mostly act like a group of coworkers and Solas doesn't trust even his own agents (hi Felassan). The game ridicules a player for certain opinions and Solas conditionally says he was called a liar, a fool, a madman by both his enemies and his allies alike for trying to share his knowledge. I used to think Solas romance was kinda empty and unsatisfying and holy shit how wrong I was. It hit me like a ton of bricks. Solavellan to me is about finally finding a person who understands you under the shittiest circumstances possible after accepting that you will probably die alone. And then...Being completely destroyed by your own sense of duty. With all the Solas hate in this fandom I kinda forgot he actually...Cares about Lavellan? It wasn't an easy decision to leave. And it was even harder for Solas to not let Lavellan join his cause. He had to get rid of his own humanity for the sake of other elves and he doesn't want his vhenan to do the same. And the most tragic thing about this, that there is not much humanity left of Lavellan anyway. They are tired and lost and alone. Inquisition has changed them, they can't go back and pretend that nothing happened. They are not the same person they used to be. Solas greatest fear is dying alone but in the end of the game my Lavellan felt like they are the one who is slowly dying alone.

Also Solas is bisexual to me I don`t care what bioware say.

All right [cracks knuckles] I'll start from the top.

Mass Effect (original trilogy): Commander Adriana Shepard. I named her after my husband because he introduced me to the game. NOT VERY ORIGINAL, but named with love? 🤣

Mass Effect Andromeda: Mara Ryder. I honestly cannot remember why I chose this name for her. Vibes, probably? I often just pick a name that "feels" right...

Dragon Age Inquisition: okay, I made up sooo many fucking Lavellans, and when I first started writing, most of them were just named after Game of Thrones characters. This includes Elia, Arya, and Lyanna.

(By now, you may have noticed that all my OCs have names ending in "a". I do like names ending in "a." I am consistent that way. 😂)

Athera Lavellan is the DA:I OC whose name is the most thought-out. I borrowed it from FenxShiral's Elvhen book of names, and it means 'part of a dream', which thematically tied into her romance with Abelas.

But then there's Tamaris, which is another name that I chose because of vibes (it "felt right"). I will admit that I know someone named Tamaris and I love the name, but I was also surprised to find that this is coincidentally a name from FenxShiral's name dictionary - a fact that I used in my fic of her and Felassan.

Dragon Age 2: Rynne Hawke. Her name was also chosen for vibes; 'Rynne' struck me as a kind of fun, playful name. I think in-world, she is named after a great-aunt. (It's been a while since I revisited her, I think this is the lore. 🤣)

Dragon Age Origins: Yara Mahariel. BACK TO THE TRIED AND TRUE METHOD OF USING GAME OF THRONES NAMES. 🤣💀

Baldur's Gate 3: my main Tav is Eilaena Valderol, aka Brynn Bladetongue. THIS WAS THE NAME I THOUGHT ABOUT THE MOST. Her birth name, Eilaena, is a drow name broadly inspired by the goddess Eilistraee. Her last name is her mother's name, which I used a D&D name generator to come up with. Her criminal alias, Brynn , was borrowed from an adventurer she admired who was a regular at the theater-tavern where she grew up. 'Bladetongue' is a stagename-like surname that she came up with; in her words, it's masturbatory (flattering herself for her silver tongue), and she likes the alliteration. She's half-wood elf/half-drow, and she purposely gave herself a human-sounding alias to fuck with people LOL.

My other BG3 OC is Tavanah. I liked the idea of using the default "non-special" name of 'Tav', but making it special by having her romance, Rolan, be the only one who calls her by her full name.

i am thinking… about how a high approval lavellan really easily ends up relating to solas the way briala related to felassan. and how i actually like this much more than the romance route because it’s just as interesting and possibly even sadder.

lavellan doesn’t HAVE to see him this way, but they're given room to decide that solas is their mentor in an environment where they’ve otherwise been completely cut off from their culture-group. you have the opportunity to ask him for advice on just about anything, and the transmission of knowledge/history forms the bedrock of any positive relationship between himself and the player character. the dalish have limited written records, so most lore is passed down orally from keepers and hahrens to younger members of a clan. when solas starts rambling about the fade, it’s not just some guy telling stories, but an older elf sharing knowledge with his protege that would otherwise be lost with his death. he is fulfilling the responsibilities of a hahren in the same way felassan fulfilled them for briala, and he’s doing so while secretly the most literal hahren you could find. solas can occupy the role of an elder, but he is also among the oldest elves in the setting: not only a hahren, but the most hahren.

and in being granted the honor of a position as their elder, solas must confront the fact that lavellan is his legacy. they are the product of the world he’s created, the mortal race that owes its existence entirely to the catastrophic changes he made that he’s since come to regret. they purposefully incorporate him into their cultural lineage, and by doing that, they compel him to acknowledge the ties that bind him to present-day elves. he’s meeting his descendants in the post-apocalypse, and he’s grappling with the reality that for as bad as the world might be, it remains populated by people who recognize themselves in him.

for felassan, briala was the catalyst for an identical realization, and he was willing to die at solas’ hands to affirm her personhood (and, by extension, everyone else's). solas finds himself in precisely the same situation, except he’s been murdering his dearest friends to deny this possibility since before the story began. when he meets felassan’s own version of lavellan, when he actually encounters briala herself, he describes her in glowing terms because he realizes how closely they resemble each other. maybe this is why felassan bonded with her so strongly. the person she reminded him of could easily be solas.

i don't agree with the (prevailing?) interpretation that solas tries to separate himself from present-day elvendom because he doesn’t see other elves as people. i think he’s doing it because he wants to escape the truth that destroying the world means destroying his heirs, people who are as much like him as they could be while still surviving the terrible world he bequeathed to them. if you help elves, choose dialogues that reference elven lore, or even just point out to people that you are an elf, solas throws approval at you, but if you tell him directly that you are both elves and therefore similar, he gets scared. he knows lavellan is his people, but doesn't want to internalize that because that would turn him into a second felassan - and make his murder of the actual felassan completely meaningless.

the solas romance is about this immortal promethean god-figure recognizing an equal in the present and falling in love, but i personally like this version of the story more because it places greater emphasis on the seniority and power he holds. he's one of very few lines of defense between lavellan and a chantry that has a long, storied history of elf-killing. he has access to complete, firsthand accounts of their history, and can permit or deny them that knowledge at will. they're granting him their trust and their admiration, and it's on him to decide if he's worthy of it. they are his symbolic child, and he is the only person with the capacity to prevent them from becoming a sort of isaac to his abraham.

but instead, in true deadbeat fashion, he skips town, changes his number, and stops responding to your emails. and that’s why the new game is called dragon age dad

Do you think there are parallels between a Lavellan who befriends and looks up to Solas with Briala who looked up to Felassan? I feel like, romance aside, Solas does serve as a sort of mentor to Lavellan. I also feel like it's kind of ironic given Solas' disagreement with Felassan feeling compassion for modern day elves.

I think you could certainly play their relationship with that kind of parallel, yes.

Also since we're talking about Briala and Solas, I think it's really funny that Solas ends up speaking of his support for her rebellion (albeit while still separating himself from modern elves in a pretty snooty way) when Felassan's last words were that Briala reminded him of Solas.

My Gifts for the Arlathan 2022 Exchange

I received so much WEALTH this year during this @arlathanxchange! I waited for reveals so I could properly tag the creators and I'm so glad I did. Here they are in reverse-chronological order, because that's how I'm scrolling through my gifts tab:

Faerie-Stories Not for the Faint of Heart, by @hezjena is a beautiful, sumptuous examination of Flemeth of Highever tucked away in her tower, locked up by a jealous husband, who finds freedom not in the sword locked up with her like some useless treasure, but in a spirit who needs her help. Together, Flemeth and Mythal escape. The description of Flemeth's growing malaise and Mythal's threatening nature will haunt me from here on out.

Comrades in Arms, Brothers in Broken Chains, by @dreadfutures is a gorgeous piece about Felassan standing up to Geldauran during the early days of Fen'Harel's rebellion. Felassan makes a case for those who choose to keep their vallaslin, and in so doing exposes himself as the Hope of Fen'Harel. Felassan's dialogue is just perfect, and Solas at the very end tugged on my heart-strings so hard. "Are you here, my Hope?" will live on in my mind forever.

No Punches Left to Roll With, by @dreadfutures is a delicious, beautiful examination of Lace Harding falling for Charter as they fulfil Inquisition business. Harding's inner voice is perfect, Charter is stunning (pls kiss me omg Charter I love you), and their building friendship in this pre-relationship piece is just so tense and fun. I loved the insight into the inner workings of the Inquisition (and of Virelan!!! a sneak peek at my girl!) and how these two may have worked together.

oh the river, it's running free (oh the joy it brings to me), by @darethshirl is a (romantic? platonic? you decide) examination of Andraste and Shartan's relationship. I'm stunned by the beautiful inner voice Andraste has, and Shartan's comfort with her paired with his awe and admiration for her as they spend a moment together in meditation, suspended in time. This fic made me wish that nothing bad ever happened to either of them, and that their beautiful partnership, whether friendship or romance, could have continued in happiness forever.

mala suledin nadas, by @melisusthewee (you tricksy beastie) explores what happens when a certain Quinn Trevelyan, whom I love dearly, gets riddled with red lyrium projectiles and needs to be saved from Blighted dreams by the Dread Wolf. Quinn is clever and quick but not quite quick enough, Blackwall is a pure, dear delight, Sera is a griping mess of concern hidden behind blustering anger, and Solas is quiet, Solas is determined, Solas is loving and I will never, ever recover from just how tender and committed he can be, even in all his stern disapproval.

All of my presents have moved me to tears and more, and I count myself so lucky to have received them. They were an honour and pleasure to read and I can't recommend them enough.

Young!Ixchel pops up into pre-Arlathan Elvhenan. She has the Anchor, but there is no Veil. She has vallaslin, but not mind-controlling type (no lyrium in it).

this is just a casual observation, but i’ve noticed that solasmancers tend to have secondary da:i romances they adore, more so than people who don’t romance him. for a lot of people, it’s cullen. for some, it’s blackwall. for others, it’s josephine or iron bull. etc. etc.

it’s like we needed a rebound or to return to the comfort of an ex after going through his romance and idk how to feel about that.

It is truly ironic how Morrigan ends up being the least crazy and least destructive romanceable apostate in the Dragon Age games.

I mean, if we ignore actions that can be changed due to player agency:

No matter what you do in DAO, Morrigan either offers you the Dark Ritual (and gets it or not), or she leaves or she gets stabbed. In DAI, no matter what you do, she can either get the Well's knowledge or not and can maybe shapeshift into a dragon. That's it.

No matter what you do, Anders becomes an abomination and blows up a Chantry, killing many, causing lots of property damage and removing any chance of compromise.

No matter what you do, Merrill takes up blood magic, consorts with an audacious pride demon, becomes one of the easiest person to fall prey to a demon temptations in the Fade (versus Morrigan who gives the demon the finger when facing a demon) and is one of the cause of her Keeper's death.

No matter what you do, Solas kills Felassan for wanting to give Briala a chance, let's his agents allow Corypheus to get his Orb in the hopes it'll blow up when he tries to unlock it and kill himself and then is planning to destroy the world again.

Out of these, Morrigan has the least negative effect on the world. That's a fact. That's why she's the best apostate.

Hey there! I'm looking for some Dragon Age theories people had before Trespasser was released, as I'm very curios if people figured out who Solas was. (I bet they have!). I'd really love to read them and I'm not sure where to start looking for such old content. Thank you in advance, I love you blog a lot!

ok many spoilers here. so there was no figuring out solas' deal before Trespasser because it was revealed in the main game after the credits. So there was never a time where the fandom was speculating about what his deal was. Sometimes you can catch someone’s speculative theories they write down as they played the game, like this hilarious speculation thread from someone finishing the Solas romance for the first time yesterday.

There was a lot of speculation on what the reveal actually MEANT though. you can go back in the archives of my blog between when I played the game in DEC 2014 (i actually made some posts while I was playing it) and SEPT 2015 when Trespasser DLC came out and look at my old theories about it. My incorrect spaghetti-at-the-wall theory (because we literally just did not know what ‘Fen’Harel’ was, or what direction they were taking it) was that Fen’Harel was a Spirit of Pride much like Justice in Awakenings, and Fen’Harel may have merged with Felassan in The Masked Empire. I still feel a little justified in this theory because I feel like the “spirit” hints are very strong and still leading somewhere specific like this. I’m actually glad this theory wasn’t correct, I just couldn’t understand why there was that MOUNTAIN of Spirit Solas hints in Inquisition back then, before more was clarified about the relationship between spirits and elves in Trespasser.

Also go watch girltriesgames’ videos published before Trespasser DLC, where she masterfully predicted an incredible amount of what was ‘revealed’ in that DLC by just like... really looking at the details of the main game. This is why I still get so excited by looking at the small details of this game, because if you could figure out almost everything in Trespasser DLC by looking at the hints in the main game, imagine what else we could figure out about the trajectory of the series just by paying attention.
