luca phan was born on november 11th, 2001 to a vietnamese-american mother and a vietnamese father. her mother, victoria phan (born 1972) is an astronomer, currently based in yen bai, vietnam. her father, andung phan (born 1971), is a neurosurgeon, currently practicing in yen bai, vietnam.

luca was born in san francisco, usa as the second child of her family, younger than her older sister, jade (born 1996). in 2006, luca’s younger sister, lauren was born. as of current, luca is decently close with her sisters.

when luca was two years old, her family moved from san francisco, usa to yen bai, vietnam. they met the family who lived next door a few days later, them having a son who was three years older than luca, named hanbin. luca and hanbin became best friends and did everything together from then on. they were on the same performance dance crew called c.a.c when they lived in vietnam. luca was a gymnast and a player on the boys’ football team throughout her school life. luca was a gifted child and skipped her eighth grade year because she was too advanced. in 2018, when she graduated, she was the valedictorian of her year. that same year, she moved to south korea with hanbin, both of them chasing their dreams of becoming k-pop idols.

(Actual) Unpopular K-Pop Opinions

I’ve seen enough of these on youtube and tumblr and thought about starting my day with pissing people off, so I decided to make my own. I’ll limit it to just ten so it’s not unnecessarily long (but it will be because I explain, so I’ll just bold the main point). I also say (actual) since I’ve noticed a lot of unpopular opinion lists don’t actually feature a lot of actual unpopular or truly controversial opinions and are just an opinion like “X is a good rapper” when the popular opinion is that X is indeed a good rapper. Anyway, here are my 10, feel free to direct me your hate so I can most likely ignore it.

1. Wanna One were/are all style and no substance. They had a year and a half as a group and they only ever produced one good single. IOI was together for less than a year and beat that. Wanna One was a prime example of a boy group selling records on their looks and image alone.

2. EXO have been relying on their name brand for a long time now. I thought they had a good debut, and they’ve had some good singles here and there, like Growl and Love Me Right, but overall their quality of music has been seriously subpar these past few years and SM will put out anything for them since they know it sells regardless. Whenever another subpar title track comes out fans spam to listen to the album because “it’s much better” and yet it never is.

3. Twice do not deserve to be a top tier group/girl group. They have some good songs, with Likey being their best, and I don’t hate cute concepts and enjoy them when they’re not generic rehashes, but Twice has been doing the same shit from day one and have shown no growth or true star power, and are another example of popularity based on looks only. There are a good number of other girl groups who deliver better quality music who deserve the recognition and sales that Twice has.

4. Loona is the most exciting thing in K-Pop right now. Sorry not sorry. I get that all the “stan Loona!” stuff can be annoying, but really, their entire debut process from the solos to subunits to the full group was hands down the most creative and exciting thing in K-Pop for a good while. If you didn’t like even one solo song then you’re just hating for the sake of hating cause there was at least one song for anyone and everyone and what they like musically.

5. 2NE1 were never believable in their image. The bad girl image just wasn’t believable for 2NE1. Videos like I Am The Best just came off as cringe worthy to me. Bom and Dara could never pull it off, and CL often came off looking like a try hard. Minzy was the only one to seem natural about it. If you wanted believable bad/fierce girls, 4Minute was there the entire time.

6. BTS succeeded because of their personalities. I know even BTS themselves as artists want to try and downplay how much social media contributed to their success as opposed to their music, but it’s true. As someone interested in BTS what has me staying with them over other groups where members are robotic, stale, and void of personality, is how genuine and real BTS come across and are just enjoyable to watch in shows. Even if it’s fake on their part, they at least know how to come off as super likeable and endearing and that makes me loyal to them first and foremost for boys these days, not their music, because honestly speaking, some of their music is......eh.

7. I never thought Big Bang was great or even good for that matter. This is a group filled with members who have done all sorts of problematic and or shitty things, and their music is also pretty dour as well. I really never understood why people fawned over them (and still do.) I just find them really really unremarkable musically and pretty questionable as people.

8. G-Dragon is the top try hard of K-Pop. He is, sorry not sorry. I just find all of his “artistic” choices to be really insipid and he constantly fronts to try and put on an image of someone or something he’s not and sadly people just eat that shit up. Zico is the runner-up for top try-hard in K-Pop btw, but definitely surpasses G-Dragon for being a bigger pos.

9. Fans need to stop lying about their attraction to groups in relation to liking their music. This kind of relates back to several of the opinions proceeding this one. Do I think there’s a problem with being attracted to a musical artist you like? No. If you like their music and also are attracted to them, then fine, cool, double win for you. However, as someone attracted to men, pretty much all of my top artists are women, so I personally don’t relate to attraction bridging some gaps in liking music, but whatever. My point is though, a lot, A LOOTTT, of fans need to stop pretending/ignoring the fact that they like an artist/group and their music because they find them attractive. I don’t care if you do, just own it, but don’t sit there and lie and say music quality is the only reason, cause I’ve heard those songs too, and if it really is just the music, then I’m worried about your taste.

10. Jackson needs to stop. Whatever you wanna call it....rapping I guess....yeah just....just stop all that solo stuff.

LOONA/yyxy “love4eva” Breakdown & Theory

It’s official, the last subunit ‘yyxy’ has officially debuted! To celebrate, I’m going to break down their debut mv. Please check out my other theories here and enjoy!

I first want to point out the timeline of yyxy’s videos. love4eva takes place during the girls self-discovery. Many of the scenes in the video are parallels to their solo mvs which I will discuss later. love4eva fits into the storyline by showing how the girls left Eden. In this version, Eden is a school, with the headmistress being God.

Yves’ Dirty Socks: We know why her socks are dirty. She’s been walking into the forest, but the forest means a lot in the LOONAVERSE. The forest represents the unknown world, and in this case the world outside of Eden. Yves has been there and she knows whats out there (new mv). As a result, she loses focus in Eden and continues to be interested in what lies beyond. Her taking off her shoes represents her not wanting to conform to Eden’s rules.

Come With Me: Yves was vital to Chuu and Go Won attaining self-love in their respective solo mvs. My theory on when and where those mvs, Heart Attack and One & Only, take place is during love4eva. Rather than those mvs taking place in their versions of Eden, it takes place in the girls mind/subconscious. They represent their internal battle with self-love. This is why a lot of the scenes in love4eva is visually similar to their solo mvs. Chuu’s mv plays on the school of Eden, while Go Won’s plays on the large windows and hallways of the castle. But, once they conquered their battle for self-love, Chuu and Go Won are ready to listen to Yves plea to leave Eden.

Love and Fruit: By the time Yves has convinced the girls to leave Eden and they have accepted their true forms (forbidden fruit) the girls start rebelling. After eating their fruit, they are no longer interested in the indoctrinating/fake apples, while Olivia eats hers up (representing her still believing in Eden). They eat the flower of love, the rose, showing they are ready for me. I think Olivia is like a teacher’s pet, she completely obeys and respects the rules, but even that has consequences.

The Egoist: the girls sneak out of Eden and into the forest, leaving Olivia behind. As the last member of Eden she continues to learn and train, and maybe even suffer? The way the headmistress/God clapped at the end was very off-putting and almost sinister. We know that Olivia eventually leaves Eden and embraces self-love, but unlike the other girls, she never ate the rose. She’s not ready for love. She’s broken, hurt, angry, and that makes her dangerous.

Things I noticed but can’t explain. (1) there were a lot of shots when the screen turned red, like in Egoist. Did this represent corruption, or maybe Olivia’s senses? (2) Chairs: there were a lot of chairs and they could represent the other LOONA members, even the girls from BBC who did not become a member of LOONA. (3) WHERE IS YEOJIN? (4) x? For having a lot of the teaser description being about neanthropic chromosomes there wasnt much emphasis on who is x in the video. I still think its Chuu though.

Loona is another awesome group. Have you seen one yet? They are so Beautiful and feeding their fans well. So far, I've loved every single group you've recommended. The only song I wasn't feeling was gi-dle's Latata. I don't know what it is but the other one's were better. Yet I really enjoyed their fake love cover. Once again, beautiful and immensely talented women whom I'll still support because they just deserve it. Somehow Black dress by CLC is the song of my life. (4/?)

It's such an empowering song! I can see a lot of women listening to this and finding encouragement in being boss ass independent bitches. CLC is another one of my favs for sure! Pairing: None, Yeojin/Haseul Friendship

Summary: Based on the Twitter hate Yeojin got when Kim Lip and Jinsoul debuted. Aka netizens forget Yeojin is an actual kid.

Her members warned her to stay away from social media for a bit. Yeojin had thought the girls were just finding a different way to baby her, being the maknae. She was wrong. She’s always been rather secure in her talents and appearance, so experiencing the first dent in her armor had been jarring. Yeojin’ eyes welled up. She was just a kid.

She began to think the netizens were right too. She wasn’t as talented as Jinsoul. Or as pretty as Jungeun. Of course Jinsoul and Jungeun were quick to assure her that neither were the case, but Yeojin couldn’t help but think they were just saying that to be nice. The other girls tried to be comforting in their own way too. Yeojin appreciated the effort.

“Yeojin-ah,” Yeojin looked up from her pillow.

“Haseul-unnie,” was her simple reply.

Haseul sat next to her on the bed. Yeojin was tense, ready for more sweet words or a cheap trinket. She knew she was too young to be this cynical, but she felt jealous of Haseul. She felt jealous of Jungeun and Jinsoul. Jealous of the subunit she wasn’t a part of. Was she not good enough for Loona 1/3?

The managers said they had ‘special plans’ for her. But she’s been waiting and waiting for some acknowledgment. When she asks she just gets told she needs to focus on her studies right now, with a fake encouraging grin on their faces. She found that condescending smile sickening. Yeojin felt a hand on her back pull her out of her sea of thoughts. She glanced back up to see Haseul’s concerned face.

“I asked if you were alright, Yeojin-ah.”

“Of course I’m okay,” but to Haseul, and even Yeojin herself, it sounded more like she was trying to convince herself rather than her senior member.

“You know it’s okay to cry if you’re sad. It’s okay to yell if you’re angry. No one has the right to make you feel this way”

That’s when the dam broke. Yeojin began to weep like the child she truly was. Like the child the netizens forgot she was. Her whole body shook with her sobs. Haseul’s hand made gentle circles on her back, grounding her. It felt cathartic to finally let go like this.

“Yeojin-ah. You say you’re ugly, do you think I am?”

“What kind of question is that, unnie?” Yeojin exclaimed. Her voice shaky from the tears.

Yeojin was startled by this sudden question. Of course Haseul is gorgeous.

“Well, many fans say we look similar. How can you think of me as pretty, and yourself as not? You’re still a young girl, Yeojin. You’re growing into yourself. You’re beautiful now, and will be even more so when you’re my age.”

Yeojin felt herself tearing up again. For some reason, hearing those words felt so sincere coming from Haseul. How did she accomplish this when similar words felt hollow from everyone else? It was like a soothing balm on her wounds. Before she could say anything, Haseul continued.

“And your singing voice. You have a natural talent, that’s grown since you’ve been assigned a vocal coach when you were a trainee. Remember this Yeojin. In our line of work matter what you do, there will always be those who hide behind a computer screen criticizing you.”

“That’s horrible though.”

“It is. But you learn to ignore them. They can turn anything into a scandal. They can bully you without remorse, and mask themselves with a fake identity. But they become white noise when you become confident with yourself. They don’t matter, because you know that you matter.

You matter to us Yeojin. We feel hurt when you do. We feel happy when you are. We care about you, you’re important to all of us. And you are very important to Loona. It wouldn’t be the same without you.”

For the first time in a week, Yeojin’s heart felt lighter. A tiny smile quirked at the corner of her mouth.

“Thank you, unnie.”

JINSOUL - SINGING IN THE RAIN [6.62] We're happy again...

Mo Kim: The LOONA (formerly LOOΠΔ) project, which promises to reveal twelve "girls of the month" through a series of themed solos and units before debuting the entire group, showcases the conceptual ambition and everything-at-the-wall spirit of K-pop at its best. (Few groups would justify throwing off a wintry tango, a throwback to '90s forebearers S.E.S. and a sultry electro-pop bop by writing elaborate science fiction connecting all of them in each subsequent video's YouTube description.) But Blockberry Creative Writing wouldn't be able to pull this off without the help of the girls, who have thus far demonstrated an uncanny ability to immerse themselves in any concept they've been thrown into. "Singing In The Rain" is no exception: JinSoul acquits herself amidst a soundscape harsh and gorgeous in equal measure, half sawtooth synths and galloping percussion and half pianos that sparkle like the stars she sings of "swallowing up." If at times it feels like she gets swallowed by the instrumental, that may be the thrill of the song and the commitment it asks of us; try to hold her gaze at the end of the video, as she emerges completely drenched yet somehow completely herself. Maxwell Cavaseno: The LOONA group/collective/team are a mysterious lot. If you take them at face value, they're an ever-expanding K-Pop group on a journey who have a discography made of solo material ranging from ballads, electro-pop jams, IU-influenced R&B numbers and showtunesy bits. Also, apparently one of them's a robot or something. Whatever. "Singing in the Rain" is the most violently industrial of all the tunes coming out of this alternate universe. If I was honest about this song, I'd point out how lame the rapped second verse feels, or the inconsistent pre-chorus builds tend to detract from how effective a song can be. But I would be lying to myself if I didn't tell you about how that galloping beat sounds like you're ready to get your chest caved in by a kick from the horse in the Lloyds Bank advertisements. Or how that drop managed to snatch the hard drive where my Hyetal and Hudson Mohawke radio rips from 2011 lie dormant and fling it into the air to shoot it with a cow puncher. Sometimes despite the illogical bits, a song just works, y'know? [7]

Ryo Miyauchi: Fake-deep lyrical touches, high-budget art-house MVs, exhausting year-long promo -- all those extra layers disappears for a second once that winding future-house drop kicks in. The producers responsible for one of the year's best electro glitch is Caesar & Loui of "Red Flavor" fame, whose vocal-twisting once again accents an already-impeccable beat. But not to forget JinSoul, who twirls the fine beat drop around her finger, guiding its glide via the chorus. [8]

Tim de Reuse: In isolation any fifteen-second clip of this would be impressive on a technical level, but to get through the full three-and-a-half minute experience, your ears must contend with scattered jam sessions on pots and pans, wobbly hissing saw waves, tonally adventurous chord progressions, vocal takes getting layered and stereo-widened and digitally distorted: flourish on top of flourish on top of flourish. Even in its few slower sections it refuses to let up, starting each line of lyrics before the last has finished. The effect is less exhilarating than it is exhausting: a conveyor belt of ideas, each presented in quick succession and not returned to, all in unrelenting double-time so that there's barely an opportunity to appreciate the audacity of each individual section before we've been rushed off somewhere else. Props for the well-produced maximalism, I guess, but listening to it just makes me ache for a home-cooked goddamn I - IV - V - I. [4]

Dorian Sinclair: My favourite moment of "Singing in the Rain" comes right at the end of the video, when the music ends and we're left with the sound of birds and gentle rainfall. If that sounds backhanded, it's not meant to -- I just appreciate the suddenness with which the driving rhythm of the three preceding minutes drops away, much like an actual summer rainstorm. It's a fine grace note on an exhilarating song. [7]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: Blockberry Creative are pumping at least 10 billion won into the 18-month pre-debut promotion of LOONA, an 18-member (and three-subunit) girl group whose Korean name translates to "Girl of the Month." If this isn't a sign that the label's dead serious about the project, take a look at the music video for "Singing in the Rain." They hired Digipedi to craft a product that features all the hallmarks of a top-tier K-pop video -- Wong Kar-wai pastel lighting, post-Flavin fluorescent light set pieces, and enigmatic symbolism that you'd expect from SM's artsier side. Are we to believe that LOONA could duke it out with the best of them? If "Singing in the Rain" is anything to go by, it's an emphatic yes. The song starts off with a triumphant gallop before mutating into a post-dubstep swirl and, as with "Red Flavor," Caesar & Loui pack in enough bells and whistles to make sure the song's physicality is always palpable. The most amusing detail is a sound akin to a Koopa shell bouncing off a pipe in Super Mario Bros. It's carefully considered, and used to accent JinSoul's imperial side. But JinSoul isn't trying to come off fierce for no reason; she's expressing her desire for a night with someone that'll rival the Hollywood glamour of the song's title. The ecstasy she eventually finds only further fuels her hunger, and you can sense it everywhere in the song. You feel it in the pounding drums, but it's also in the soft piano melody, the melismatic coos, the cry to be held all night. It's omnipresent in the video, too. Choreographer HG Kim's metal rod workout? That's a sign of her indomitable spirit in all this. The juxtaposition between JinSoul cautiously running in a school uniform and then stomping on water with a leather choker harness on? That's her shedding off any timidity. The shot of JinSoul floating in the air while wearing a royal blue dress? That's the ineffable bliss of being in love. That particular image is graphically matched with a blue fish that she'd been holding in a bag, and it's the exact moment where everything comes together. It can be easy to feel like one of the numerous goldfish in the video: average, ordinary, unremarkable. But sometimes, being loved by someone can lift you up and make those thoughts feel like the furthest thing from the truth. So take your shoes off and throw them in the lake; soon, you'll be singing in the rain. [8]
