Villainous bookstore (the superhero AU)

It was a normal day, at least for Rae he had just gotten a new shipment of books. He was setting them up at the front of the shop, hopefully, these ones would sell.

Aax was out at work. He worked at a local gym. Apparently, he was a very good martial arts instructor, knowing 4 different fighting styles. Aax was invaluable to the local gym.

Caspian, on the other hand, was busy upstairs working on a lecture that he planned to deliver the upcoming weekend at the local college. so right now, the whole shop was just Rae’s to enjoy.

A nice, peaceful, calm, quiet day. A breath of fresh air from the chaos. That was his life. It was going to be a perfectly calm afternoon.

“RAE! Guess who’s avoiding their responsibilities!” the door, swung open jingling, the bell very loudly. Wearing a colorful purple, and yellow trenchcoat a fancy sunhat that didn’t match the trenchcoat expensive sunglasses, and a fancy tote bag. Sherbet marched into their brother’s shop.

“Sherbet what are you doing in town? I thought you were on tour for another four weeks?” Rae stated not even reacting to the ridiculousness of his brother.

“Oh, you know how Dad is, some new villains start appearing two antiheroes teaming up. He starts getting anxious and decides to cut my tour short and bring me home. Never gonna take any chances after that one time.” Sheb displays with a wipe at their eye, “of course no sign of her. So, of course, to mourn the loss of my wonderful tour being cut short,” they say, lifting their now, bloody hand to their forehead in a dramatic way, “ we are going to hang out for 25 hours straight, er GAY!” With that, they grab Rae’s wrist with their unblooded hand. As they drag him out of the shop, sherbet flips the open sign to closed.

“Wait sherbet, I forgot my phone!” Rae says sparring a glance back to the shop before he has to be shoved in Sherbet’s car.

“Who do you need to text? Centross only needs to look at Twitter to see I’m back in town and he’ll know where you are,” Sherbert points out as he shoves Rae into the car. Ray swallows the saliva in his throat. He hasn’t told anyone except for Centross about Caspian and Aax. He was worried that Sherbet and Fable would want to meet them, and then they discover who Rae’s family was, and it would be a whole thing.

“You’re right, let’s just enjoy you being back in town,” Rae says, turning to his brother with an easy smile.

”Okay! first things first we’re stopping by Mombo’s to get some delicious baked goods!” Sherbet declares, with a smile. They rub their hands together before grasping the wheel and hitting the gas.

Caspian heard a customer come in a few minutes earlier, some quiet conversation, and the bell again but nothing else. In fact, Caspian noticed how quiet it had become. No Rae humming downstairs, nor any footsteps.

Caspian slowly distended the stairs into the little book shop, “Rae? Hello?” he called out for his boyfriend but there was no answer.

Looking about the bookshop, he spotted Ray’s phone sitting just behind the check-in counter in the books that he would have been shelving we’re halfway down the final bit of concerning evidence was the fact that the door said had been flipped from open to closed.

“RAE!?” Caspian called a little more frantic, “Rae if this is a joke, it isn’t funny where are you?” nothing he wasn’t in the shop.

Swallowing his panic, Caspian decided he needed to look about for clues that had to be some explanation on where Rae went. Grabbing Ray’s phone from the counter, unlocked it. nothing Rae had set up a playlist, but now that the headphones were disconnected and turned off there was no way to track them. looking over the books one of them had been placed on the counter instead of a stand. There was blood on the book. Caspian became very worried.

Pulling out his own phone, Caspian dialed Aax even though he was at work this was something that Aax needed to know. It rang for a moment, “Hay baby what's up you never call me at work?”

“Rae is missing!”

“Whoa whoa, Cas slow down, what happened?”

“He was downstairs humming and then somebody came in and they talked and then they left and I didn’t hear him so I went downstairs to check on him and his phone had been left behind and one of the books has blood on it!”

“There’s blood on the book?” The olm hybrids voice became darker.

“I mean it’s red and sticky like blood.”

“Red? isn’t Rae’s blood magenta?” Aax pointed out from the other side of the phone.

Rae had told them that. Because he was an ender hybrid his blood was a different color. So he needed special blood for transfusions. Taking a deep breath, “it may not be Rae's blood, but somebody’s blood is on this book, and Rae is missing,” Caspian worried.

“Well, the gym doesn’t need me anymore today so I will come straight home as soon as I clock out I will be there, don’t worry,” Aax reassured Caspian before hanging up.

Setting the phone down, Caspian tried to calm down with deep breaths. There was a perfectly logical explanation and Rae was fine. There was a perfectly logical explanation and Rae was fine. As soon as he could Aax, clocked out of the gym and grabbed his bike. Pedaling as hard as they could, they reached the bookstore in record time. putting the bike in the personal bike rack that and locking it Aax hurried into the store.

Caspian was sitting on the floor, his head in his hand, the book which had a little bit of red blood splattered on it to his right, and Rae’s phone clutched to his chest.

Kneeling on the floor Aax gently took Caspian’s hands, “Oh, Cas it’s w find him it’s going to be okay baby,”

“B-but I-I he he,” Caspian, stammered, tears streaming down his face.

“Shh shh it’s okay Cas, I have you we will find him he’s going to be okay. We will make sure of it.” Aax gently pressed their forehead to Caspian’s.

Flower Garden bakery was the best bakery in the entirety of the city. it was run by the Land family. the matriarch Mombo Land was a shorter woman with bright red hair, always braided with flowers per her ability, increased plant production. the oldest of her two kids Easton Land was a well-spoken and smart individual and Sherbet’s personal assistant, as for the youngest member of the Land clan Jamie is Athena‘s best friend and used to help around Rae’s shop with Athena. Before the two of them set out on their own.

However, today it seemed Jamie was helping their mom around the shop. With a comforting smile, Jamie greeted the two of them, “Sherbert I see you’re back in town and you dragged Rae along! Always an honor to have the children of the number one hero in our shop.”

“Now, now, Jamie we come here every time I’m back in town! is that really a way to talk to old friends?” sherbert smiled, walking over to the table that was Rae and Sherbet's.

“It’s true I saw that you were back in town from your tour announcements so I’ve already got your food ready.” Mombo walked over to the tables, placing their orders down in front of them. sure it was the sugariest thing on the menu chocolate waffles complete with strawberries whip cream and extra chocolate drizzled on top. Rae preferred more savory things hashbrowns with eggs and a bit of bacon. Sherbert usually drink orange juice along with their food, and Rae typically had hibiscus tea.

The meal was good, and the conversation was lively. Sherbert told tales of how their adventures have gone, and Ray told a few stories of some of the wackier customers nothing about Caspian or Aax.

It was a nice way to start the day before sherbert dragged Rae once again to the car, “let’s hit the spa. I’ve already called Athena, so it’ll just be the three of us getting pampered!” sherbert announced with a smile, hitting the gas a second after Rae buckled up.

Rae just laughed, “Yeah, that’s fair!”

Centross was heading over to Rae’s bookshop he had heard that Rae was getting some new books in, maybe something interesting. when you arrived he was shocked to find the door was closed and both of Rae’s new boyfriends were sitting on the floor crying. Carefully opening the unlocked door the two turned to look at him.

“What happened?” Centross carefully asked as he stepped inside the store.

“We don’t know Rae is missing,” Aax spoke up in a quiet tone as Caspian continued to cry on his shoulder.

“I found a book with red blood on it and his phone,” the crying man spoke.

“Were are their signs of a struggle?” Centross said, with a sneaking suspicion of what was going on.

“No, they just came in and talked, and then I heard the bell and then I went downstairs to check on Rae he wasn’t there,” Caspian explained clinging tightly to Aax.

Centross nodded, pulled out his phone, and check Twitter, “Oh my Gods I’m never letting him live this down.”

“What why?” Aax asked nervously.

“He’s fine actually right now looking at the time he’s probably on his way to the spa.”

“What?” The two of them said in unison.

“Rae’s brother is a fun one.”

“Brother?” The two men give each other a look.

“Yeah, whenever he’s in town, Rae’s brother always takes him on a wild day. They always do the same things,” Centross explained with a smile, “when we were little, they went and set a playground on fire, and then told the police that it was an ability accident. Rae’s brother doesn’t have any pyrotechnic abilities. They stole a lighter off a parent.”

“What?” Caspian said, with a disbelieving smile.

“Oh, yeah, I was there. I helped him get in the mulch in the playground to do it.” Centross says this in all honesty.

Athena is already inside the spa waiting for them, “Took you guys long enough. Did you have fun at Mombo’s?”

“Yeah, Jamie was there helping Mombo.” Rae smiled as they walked up to his cousin that honestly felt more like a little sibling.

“Come on let’s get checked in. I want to get pampered the road is not been easy on these wings!” Sherbet submitted, smiling as the two followed them with a laugh.

“Of course poor Sherbet’s wings!” Athena laughed, putting their hand to their forehead in a dramatic swoon.

“Yes, it was so taxing for them to be cramped in the little trailer that’s bigger than my living room and my kitchen put together!” Rae mocked.

“Do you two want to do the spa or what?” Sherbert turned to the two with a pout.

This caused the two younger ones to laugh even harder.

Once the two of them had calmed down, thanks to Centross's reinsurances that Ray was safe and perfectly fine. He left to go continue running his flower shop/Speakeasy villain bar.

Caspian and Aax spent most of the day cleaning up the shop and waiting for Rae to return. They even planed a heist for the evening.

After the spa, Athena sherbet, and Rae made their way over to Nether INC’s main tower to drop off Athena. Giving Athena hugs and promises that they have to visit and catch up more soon. The two brothers then headed for their next destination. In the evening, the swings on the old playground where sherbet once it on fire, were always a must, especially after their mom went missing.

Pulling up into the old parking lot the two walked over to the melted playground this part of the city never had the money to fix it and Sherbet never had gotten in any trouble because they claimed it had been an ability accident.

The two walked over to the still-standing swings and gently rocked back and forth.

“We’re gonna find Mom one day dad is going to do it,” Sherbet said after a moment as they watched the sunset.

“I don’t really remember her…” Rae admitted quietly.

“She had beautiful, blonde hair she loved orchids. She had the best laugh. she used to sing us to sleep with really nice lullabies. Whenever we got hurt she would kiss it all better,” sherbert, said, reaching out and gently grabbing Rae’s hand.

They stayed there for a little longer before Sherbet released their hand from Rae’s, stood up, and walked over to the car Rae quietly followed behind, and they headed home.

They listen to music as they headed home none of Sherbet’s stuff they already had enough of it on the tour. Stopping by McDonald’s on the way they had dinner.

Entering their childhood home Fable wasn’t there, of course not he was busy protecting the world. the two siblings made their way to the shared childhood room and slept in their childhood beds changing into some spare pajamas. They always left there.

as they sat in the darkness, guilt had started to fill their stomach, “Sherbert there’s something I didn’t tell you today or anyone, Centross knows, but that’s because he lives about a block from me…”

“What is it, Rae?” Sherbert carefully asked.

“I have two boyfriends and I have been dating them for a year. I don’t want to tell them about my family because I’m worried it’ll change their opinions of me.”

“I’m sorry what? How did you pull two boyfriends? You have been dating for a year? What are they like? Do they treat you right? Do I need to give them the shovel talk?”

“No! no! no! please don’t give them the shovel talk I don’t want them to find out about my family. I just want them to love me as a normal everyday citizen Rae.” Rae explained frantically.

“OK but I’m paying Centross to give them the shovel talk!” sherbert, said, with a smile, throwing a pillow at Rae’s face in the dark.

“Ack!” Rae, cried out.

“good night, Rae!” sherbert, said, with a smile, turning over in their bed.

“Good night you dork!”

“You’re the dork.”

It became apparent that Rae wasn’t going to come home tonight. So Caspian and Aax decided to take advantage of the opportunity to not have to sneak past Rae.

Grabbing his knives Caspian donned his white poncho and put on his white mask with a black smile making him look reminiscent of a simple ghost. Besides his ability to make himself and the things he is touching intangible, the media had no problem naming him Ghosty.

Aax’s outfit on the other hand was a sleek black suit with red trim and a white mask with red monster teeth paired with ruby red sunglasses they also tucked their red hair tips into their jacket. The media had trouble picking a name for Aax so they announced during a bank robbery that they were Olm.

They had only started working together after dating for about two months. But almost everyone in the underworld knew that they were a thing. The Violet Reaper, the best informant on this side of the country, had asked them if their dates would conflict with heists.

The plan tonight was for a company that was horribly abusing its workers. Standing on the roof of an apartment building by Grand Tree Park famous for the giant tree in its center Ghosty texted Cartographer on a cheap flip phone,

“We will meet you by GTP”

“K be there in 5”

“I see you”

Cartographer has a full-face cat-ish mask with large black eyes that have some mesh to see through all black clothes with various pockets and a newspaper bag with paper for him to use his ability.

“So how are you two?” Cartographer starts small talk as they make their way to the warehouses.

“Good enough.” Ghosty gives a quick answer.

“Better wen we take down this company” Olm says in half joking tone.

“Fair enough.” Cartographer giggles, “oh look we’re here!”

Ghosty quickly dispatched the guards. After Ghosty nocked them unconscious and carefully moved them to a safe place Olm busted down the door. Stepping infrunt Cartographer pulled out papers and using his ability a paper copy of the building.

“Here is where they keep stolen items from their employees for leverage.” Cartographer points out two rooms on the map. The three of them make their way to safes. Ghosty cuts the alarms on the way. Olm breaks the doors open revealing the leverage that the company has been using to keep its employees in place. Grabbing a small metal block from the newspaper bag Cartographer places it on the ground and it lights up.

“Seven can you please collect all the objects in this room and return them to my base without being seen,” Cartographer orders the block.

It sits for a moment before it states, “Task excepted.” It then extends to a tall humanoid robot that looks as though it’s taken a few hits with dents and scratches on the paint. Where a heart should be on a human there was a serial number but it had been covered by a sloppy paint job with the name Seven written beneath it in the same paint. It began to collect the objects as ordered.

“Where did you get that?” Ghosty asked impressed.

“Found them in a junk yard and they still work there not in the best condition but they get the job done.”

“Ghosty maybe you can fix them?”

“Maybe… I tinker sometimes, but I don’t know if I can fix a whole robot.” Ghosty muses, “The back-haired angel would definitely notice a whole robot!”

“Yeah…” Olm agrees.

“Who is the black-haired angel?” Cartographer cuts in.

“Our boyfriend!” Olm cheerfully replies.

“Oh, nice!” Cartographer smiles through his mask.

Once seven left the Warehouse they set fire to the building and ran away. Making their way to the company building. Once again Cartographer used their ability to make a model of the tower they had Ghosty take Olm and remove the few people inside the building and put them alleyway on the opposite side of the street.

Watching the map Cartographer waded intel the building was empty. Then carefully Cartographer slowly destroyed the model, ensuring that none of the rubble damaged the nearby buildings until it was just a pile of paper mirroring the wreckage of the building.

The three of them sat on the roof opposite the building until the cops arrived. Wishing Cartographer a good night, Ghosty and Olm headed home.

In the coming weeks, Cartographer will return the stolen items to their owners.

When Rae woke up Sherbet was already downstairs. Quietly walking downstairs Rae let himself wander down memory lane. The two of them had spent their entire childhood here. Even though Rae wasn’t his real son Fable was always Rae’s father caring and loving him and Sherbet equally.

“-did you really have to cut my tour short?” Sherbet complained, “Most of the new villains are small-time crooks. Enderian-” Rae inhaled sharply. Sherbet and Fable turned to Rae their eyes wide.

“Don’t stop on my account you we’re talking about her.” Rae could never bring himself to say her name. Especially after what she did to Sherbet.

“Well,” Sherbet started slowly, “she hasn’t been seen in years! She could be dead for all we know.” They ended with a frustrated breath. Rae sat in the chair next to sherbet. Fable handed him eggs a toast.

“Sherbet,” Fable started, “if smaller villains are acting up it means that something is going on in the underworld. If there is a chance that it’s her then we cannot risk her capturing you and learning Rae is her biological son. I can’t let either of you be hurt again.” He explained with love in his voice.

Sherbet nodded solemnly. The family ate in silence. After breakfast, Rae and Sherbet hugged their father goodbye. The drive back to Rae’s was quiet for a moment before Sherbet smiled, “so those two guys you’re dating?”

Rae sighed “their names are Caspian and Aax, Caspian is a writer he mainly writes nonfiction guides, but he has a few fiction stories my favorite one written by him is Lady Of The World, Aax on the other hand” Sherbet snorts. Rae glares and them before continuing, “Aax, is a mixed martial artist who works at the local gym and teaches children self-defense.”

“Do they make you happy?”

“Very.”

“Then they are okay in my book!” Sherbet smiles at their brother.

They stop right outside The Archives Rae gives Sherbet one last hug before going inside.

“I’m back!” Rae nervously calls out.

The thumping of two pairs of feet echoes through the building. Aax is the first to find see him a smile adorned their face.

“Hi,” Rae breathes.

“Hi,” Aax responds.

“HI HI hi!” Caspian pushes past Aax raping Rae in a hug. Aax follows and the three of them hold each other. Later there will be expansions but for now, they just enjoy each other’s presence.
