Yoko Ono- Wish Tree

The wish tree is the evolution of Ono's childhood memories, she used to go to the temple and write a wish on a peice of paper, she would hang that paper on the tree. Ono wanted to translate that to the artworld.

Ono has done this exhabition many times since its debut in 1996, there is now over 1 million wishes she has collected from the trees. The power people feel when able to express their emotions must be freeing. To know that you have put that energy out there and that you have left it to fait is very true to the works origin. Letting the gods choose so to speak. Writing can be a cathartic thing, people write to get thoughts out of their head, express emotion in song writing or poetry and is something that is even prescribed to help with mental health and well being.

Writing can also be used to remember good memories or new ones, people sending post cards from travels and such. I want to have an element of this in my degree show. To have people remember good memories and share them with eachother, to be able to read otjers and see if there is similar experiences or make people think about the thing people hold importance too.

Final Thoughts

The promotion module has gave me alot to think about, in the way of insurance as an artist where to get funds and how to promote your shows and yourself.

I think my best option for insurance would be to join a union, this way you get insured and also have the guidence starting out as a new artist.

Its great to see that there are options for funding and orginisations thatvare able to help get projects off the ground.

Going forward joining a union and looking at funding options is something im interested in. I think this will be the best way to get my art out there, i also have been looking at independent exhabitions.

This would allow me the freedom to do what i want with my work, having both means i will be able to show work as i like but also having funding means i can build a network of people in the artistic world.

Keith Haring

Keith Haring was born in 1958, in Pennsylvania, USA. He loved drawing cartoons and visiting museums.He is known for his colourful, cartoon artworks and became popular in the 1980's, he also created many different prints which is why I am looking into him to help give me inspration for my prints. At age 20 he moved to New York City and quickley realised New York was a very exciting place and gave him many opportunities. Haring was working in the same neighbourhood as other popular artists such as Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquit. Keith took a lot of inspiration from graffti artists, he drew hundreds of illustrations on the New York subway, he also used chalk when drawing on subways, pavments, etc.Although his art was amazing he did sometimes get in trouble for the graffti on the subways, however this didn't stop him as many people loved his art and wanted everyone to experience it. Eventually Keith started becoming famous and had exhabitions in galleries and even his paintings been sold. As his fame grew his artwork became more expensive and not very affordable, however he still wanted people to be able to buy his art. He decided to open up a shop called Pop Shop where he solf his art on badges, posters and T-shirts. Keith Haring is still extremely popular to this day even though he sadly pasted away in 1998 due to getting sick with AIDS, his art is still sold and even clothing lines and jewellery collaborations have been created.

(Counter) Narratives Die Pinakotheken features Mounira al Solh, Yael Bartana & Walid Raad

"How can artists use art to make sense of wartime events?"

"How can they depict the after-effects of war?"

"What tools do artists have to counteract a sense of powerlessness or speechlessness?"

These are just some of the questions artists, Mounira, Yael and Walid searched for answers to through their most recent exhabit, (Counter) Narratives, at Munich's Die Pinakotheken. In collaboration with the Written Arts Collective, the Collection of Photography and Time-Based Media, the artists placed a spotlight on their own experiences within the Middle East and the reality of war/conflict.

Mounira al Solh - Lebanon - A single shot video of her within her studio. In the process of refusing to talk about the ongoing war within Lebanon, she ultimately ends up doing the very thing she set out to avoid.

Yael Bartana - Israel - A cinematic documentary styled after the socialist documentaries created to evoke the Zionist dream. A 1930s-style kibbutz (a communal settlement) was built on a 1:1 scale in the Muranów district of Warsaw, Poland. Playing off the idealized Zionist dream, the documentary hosts strong, beautiful men and women who are all continuing to build houses and fulfill their communal responsibilities regardless of the cost.

Walid Raad - Lebanon - Excerpts from his father's diary which was kept during the Lebanese Civil War. It details daily life and specifics such as the increased price for construction materials as well as drawings of the bombs that landed around his home.

My most recent artwork - i did it for the group exhabition. All of the portraits are painted in termographic scale. Red areas are the warmest ad blueish are the coldest. It was pretty fun to do.

Possible future exhabition spaces

Many Studios- Pros and Cons

It is located in the barralands which is a place which gets alot of foot traffic.

This is perfect for an exhabition as it means that people can come in off the street.

The space itself is well light and has lots of potential floor space and walls. They are also able to accommodate for chairs and tables.

Capacity-

16 boardroom

40 theatre style

70 standing

As you can see it lools like theres plenty of space to move around with the artworks installed. The site also comes with high speed wifi, the use of a projector and screen as well as a duty manager to make sure things run smoothly.

This is something the salt space does not provide, but it comes at an extra cost. Standard rates are £150 for a half day hire.

This is maybe worth it just for the helping hand from the duty manager and the foot traffic the barras gets, especially on the weekends.

You are also able to rent a studio in the building. They range from 100-800. As i am just now I would not be able to afford a 800 pound studio, but i may be able to for the lower end of the budget.

You are also put on a waiting list. As and when studios become available ypu will be contacted. The studios look cozy and have a real community feel to them, i think this would be great for knowledge exchange between artists.
