Ala Ebtekar, Thirty-Six Views of the Moon (from the San Jose Museum of Art)
Cyanotype prints on found book pages exposed to moonlight.
Thirty-six Views of the Moon is a collection of night exposures, left from dusk till dawn and exposed by moonlight on book pages from texts referencing the moon and night sky spanning the last ten centuries. Working with photographic negatives of the Moon from the Lick Observatory archives in Northern California and treating each book page with Potassium ferricyanide and Ammonium ferric citrate (cyanotype) to make the surface of the page light-sensitive, the pages are then exposed overnight by the UV-light emitted by the moon. The work takes its cue from a poem by Omar Khayyam that imagines us as the objects of the Moon’s omnipresent gaze and, in response, produces a vignette of windows on the Moon that abstract the typical celestial gaze, merging galaxy with ground to collapse space and time. Queer Games Exhibit + Kickstarter
Tumblr media
Hello, everyone! I haven't been able to make much pixel art this past year, but I'm super excited to share what I've been working on the past couple of months!
I've been organizing FREE PLAY! Richmond, VA's first queer video games exhibit hosted at The Iridian Gallery, the only LGBTQ-focused exhibit in the southern U.S. (more under the cut)
We're running a kickstarter campaign to help cover the costs of the exhibit. We're also hoping to secure artist honorarium anD get gameboy cartridges, zines and other merch created!
If you all could share and support the kickstarter, it would mean so so much to me!
Tumblr media
For the past couple of months, we built custom displays for all nine of our games!! and paid for transporting, printing, everything, so that our devs could focus on their games :)
Galleries often take 50% (or more) of artists' commissions! Not only that, but making, transporting, and installing artwork can get pretty expensive! The high price point makes it really hard for artists and game devs to share noncommercial artworks. It's our mission to help mitigate these costs and make it more accessible for game devs to share their art!
Tumblr media
Your support will go a long way to making this project sustainable! And will help many queer game devs share their work :)

THE SHOW OPENS THIS FRIDAY! We're having a HUGE PARTY on January 12th @7pm! You're totally invited!

John Singer Sargent (American, worked in Britain) • The Countess of Rocksavage (Sybil Sassoon) • 1922 • Private collection
Gallery text (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; special exibition: Fashioned by Sargent) :
Severe and frontal, Sargent's painting gives Sybil Sassoon the status and authority of an old master portrait. He must have had something deliberate in mind when he painted this, late in his career, since he was the one to order Sybil's dress from the House of Worth (displayed nearby). Its design resembles a 16th-century portrait of the queen of Spain, Anna of Austria, a member of the powerful Habsburg dynasty. The distinctive gold brooch in the shape of a double-headed eagle is the Habsburg insignia, and the jewel appears in both paintings. Sybil's brother Philip, a connoisseur and collector, owned the brooch, as well as the significant rope of pearls Sybil wears, which had been their mother's.

Sunday, the 24th of February 2024
I took Thursday to Saturday off, to travel to the Netherlands and it was a lovely escape. We browsed through bookshops, were inspired by an art exhibit, laughed and cried at the cinema, wandered the city, sipped on wild cocktails, played board games, stayed up too late and made pancakes for breakfast. Now I am not necessarily rested but I am unbelievably fortunate to have had this little adventure to refocus.
Also, what a great year 2024 seems to be for films? Perfect Days was a simple hit, The Holdovers made me shed tears of joy and sorrow, I'm looking forward to seeing Poor Things and All of Us Strangers as well.
Things on my mind
