Weddings, holidays, and funerals. It was the only thing that ever drew her back to New Jersey. If she went more than once a year, it already felt like too much. It was a funeral this time, her grandfather’s to be specific. Her father was close to the man, though Lennon’s only memories of him consisted of yelling every sentence two times louder than normal for him to hear. He rarely understood her. Your voice is too squeaky dear, I don’t know what the hell you’re saying. He had as much grace as everyone in her family had. 

With her rental car parked outside her childhood home, she found herself not willing herself to go in just yet. It was a mystery of who was all inside - were her cousins, aunts, and uncles all running around in that house? Or worse, was it just her mother and father? Lennon wasn’t going to move until she saw some sort of sign that one of her siblings was there. Eden, the youngest, had a late flight from the last she heard and she wasn't sure what Eli was up to. 

Lennon leaned against the rental car and embraced the cold air as she stared at that house. Flurries were coming down in a hurry and getting lost in her curls. She pulled out a vape from her jacket pocket and inhaled. She didn’t always smoke, but the need for some thc was astronomical. It was the only way she’d be able to face this weekend. Or more so, face her mother. As she exhaled, she saw a figure in the corner of her eye and nearly choked on the smoke. 

“Jesus Christ,” she let out frightened and waved away some of the smoke. It was her brother. “What the hell are you doing lurking in the shadows?” Her voice came out accusatory as if she wasn’t doing the very same. It was only because he startled her. After a second, she slid her vape back in her pocket and suddenly felt happy to see him despite the scare. Lennon moved in and hugged him extra tight and gave his back a few pats. “Are you getting bigger or am I just shrinking?”

my new year’s resolutions:

1.) write and post more fucked up shit.

my prof just explained on the syllabus that he’s included more points in the class than we needed to pass, so we could skip up like?? 20 small assignments/quizzes/participation!! and still get a very high grade!!

the idea was that we could focus on assignments that played to our strengths - only do the participation stuff if we like to talk out loud - only do the quizzes/readings if we want to do the class remotely - only do online discussions if we like to talk and share opinions but struggle with anxiety in class ect.

and that’s cool enough but then he pulled up DnD character sheets with drawings he’d done of these hypothetical student player classes and how our various accessibility needs could be gamified to ‘max out’ different aspects of the class to get high grades and like!!!!!

hell yeah!!!! let’s treat accessibility in higher education not just as a necessity but as the fun, engaging, and creative aspect of learning that it is!!! I love this!!

i spent my entire teenaged years fighting for my life. i crawled through the deepest pits of my depression to cling to the promise of a life beyond that pain. i was so convinced that i was going to die young, that i would never see the grace of my age starting with a 2, let alone 3.

so im going to turn 30, and there’s not a damn thing anyone can do to stop me from loving it.

advice i think we should tell children is that when adults say stuff like ‘now that i’m an adult i get really excited about stuff like coffee tables and bathrooms and rugs etc’ they don’t mean ‘and now i don’t care about blorbo and squimbus from my childhood tv shows anymore’ bc your average adult still loves all the same pop culture stuff they always did; they just have a greater appreciation for the mundane as well. growing up just means you can enjoy life twice as much now. you can get really excited about a new stuffed animal AND about a new kitchen sponge. peace and love
