James Joseph Brown, Aka the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, Aka Godfather of Soul, Aka Mr. Dynamite, Aka Soul Brother No. 1 Passed away Christmas Day 2006 James Brown born May 3rd, 1933 in Barnwell, NC, is arguably the most influential artist in our modern day culture. With the hit ballads "Please, Please, Please" and "Try Me", Brown built a reputation as a dynamic live performer with the Famous Flames and his backing band, sometimes known as the James Brown Band or the James Brown Orchestra. His success peaked in the 1960s with the live album Live at the Apollo and hit singles such as "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag", "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "It's a Man's Man's Man's World". Brown's main social activism was in preserving the need for education among youths, influenced by his own troubled childhood and his being forced to drop out of the seventh grade for wearing "insufficient clothes". Due to heavy dropout rates in the 1960s, Brown released the pro-education song, "Don't Be a Drop-Out". Day 1 - James Weldon Johnson James Weldon Johnson was a civil rights activist, writer, composer, politician, educator and lawyer, as well as one of the leading figures in the creation and development of the Harlem Renaissance.  After graduating from Atlanta University, Johnson worked as a principal in a grammar school, founded a newspaper, The Daily American, and became the first African American to pass the Florida Bar. Not long after, in 1900, James and his brother, John, wrote the song "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which would later become the official anthem of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. (The Johnson brothers would go on to write more than 200 songs for the #broadway musical stage.) In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed James Weldon Johnson to diplomatic positions in Venezuela and Nicaragua. Upon his return in 1914, Johnson became involved with the @naacp , and by 1920, was serving as chief executive of the organization. Takanakuy: A Peruvian Christmas tradition of fist fighting with family & friends. #Takanakuy is a centuries old, annual established practice of fighting fellow community members held on 25 December, by the inhabitants of Chumbivilcas Province, near Cuzco in Peru. Don't think this tradition is only for the men. Women and children participate as well, often while hundreds of spectators watch. Just because the practice may seem a little barbaric, it doesn't mean it's NHB. There are rules: - No biting or kicking a grounded opponent. - There is always a referee figure equipped with a whip to keep things on the up and up, but hey, it's a colorful whip, so if you're on the receiving end of some lashings, at least your eyes will be treated to some color. - Local police are on standby in case things get out of hand. Despite the violent nature of the celebration, it is considered a joyous festival, with music, dance and not surprisingly, lots of alcoholic beverages. Jean-Michel Basquiat “Cultural Icon” - #ArtinCulture born December 22, 1960, Brooklyn, NY. #JeanMichelBasquiat was an American artist of #Haitian and #PuertoRican descent. He was best known for his gestural style of painting with graffiti-like images, scrawled text, and his collaboration with pop artist Andy #Warhol. Lacking any formal training, #Basquiat created highly expressionistic work that mixed graffiti and signs with the gestural and intuitive approach of #Abstract Expressionist painting. Although much of his work addressed his personal angst in highly stylized self-portraits, he also alluded to African American historical figures, including jazz musicians, sports personalities, and writers. Mexican Independence Day September 16 represents the end of Spanish rule in 1821 in Mexico 🇲🇽. This year represents it’s 200th year of “freedom”. In 1810, just before dawn on September 16, a priest named Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla rallied Mexicans in a call for a revolution, delivering the "Grito de Dolores" battle cry. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Hidalgo said: "My children, a new dispensation comes to us today...Will you free yourselves? Will you recover the lands stolen 300 years ago from your forefathers by the hated Spaniards? We must act at once." Mexican Independence Day ("Día de Independencia") is typically celebrated with fireworks, fiestas and parades.
