me: so apparently all vulcans get mind melded as children and have this weird marriage or death ceremony when their mating season hits and we see this in amok time when spock reveals he has a “wife”?? that he’s like legally bonded to??? and he has to go to vulcan or he’s gonna die of horniness or some shit????
my poor father: ..right
me: but then how did amanda and sarek happen??? surely sarek was vulcan engaged too??? did he ditch it to elope with his girlfriend? if he did why does fanfiction always make out that sarek is really ashamed of spock for ditching his vulcan engagement when he did the same thing! why are vulcans even getting engaged at like eight? thats weird right dad? i just know the divorce rate on vulcan is through the roof.
my poor father: yeah that sounds rough for spock. so did you want milk in your tea or….?
i love it when a tv show has lows that are so low you're so ashamed to ever show it to anyone ever but then highs that melt your brain a bit, like, "good fucking god, this is genuinely such an astounding piece of craftmanship... my perception of the medium, and perhaps of myself, has been challenged/changed in 40 minutes" but you cant even express that to ppl without feeling like youre fucking deranged bc my god the lows .....
The problem with coming into a decades old and thriving fandom, is having freshly formed fetus feelings about something that has already been feasted on by others
Like what am i supposed to do with this screaming crying infant ma’am? It needs to be fed and i cant do it by myself
What if I was all wrong about the "SINNER REPENT" wall writing. What if it isn't a manifestation of the social attitudes of the 1960s (compulsory heterosexuality, gender binary, etc.). What if, like Spock's message of "LOVE MANKIND," Jim's message also speaks to a hidden fear? A fear that is not the breaking of a social taboo (be it a captain's duty and Starfleet regulations, an affair, non-heterosexual love, etc.), but a haunting thought from Jim's past: that he should not be alive, that his continued existence breaks the order of life itself by cheating a certain death. Hence, the use of the words "SINNER REPENT," a phrase that matches how Kodos moralized basic survival needs to justify his eugenics and massacre on Tarsus IV.
Funny seeing fans talk about shows like Next Generation having longer seasons meant there was more room for character development while everyone who actually wrote for that show has spoken endlessly about how frustrating it was that they could barely do any character development no matter how many episodes they had. They had to really push just to be allowed to deal with the fallout of Picard being assimilated.
When they were describing the dynamic between Kirk and Spock in a comedic sense, all Sh*tner heard was "Spock is your straight man" and made the conclusion that makes Kirk the Gay Man
Star Trek the original series: Half the humans on the Enterprise are assholes to Spock since they think he’s a cold blooded uncompassionate botch due to him following the ideals of Vulcan logic (which places high value on the lives of others). He is shown continuously to be fairly well respected and liked on his homeworld and by other Vulcans.
Every new Star Trek thing using Spock: All the Vulcans hate Spock for being too human! That’s why he came to Earth and Star Fleet because it’s super welcoming and diverse as opposed to those racist Vulcan assholes.
